Over the last decade, as the biggest force in tech history hurtled toward irrelevance (albeit lucratively), a few blamed Microsoft’ s woes on founder Bill Gates, while most pointed to his successor as C.E.O., Steve Ballmer. Bethany McLean charts the breakdown of their relationship, the growing dissatisfaction with Ballmer, and the challenges and opportunities facing its third C.E.O., Satya Nadella, as Gates returns to the fold.

    Microsoft bate record em facturação

Microsoft Corp. today announced revenue of $23.20 billion for the quarter ended September 30, 2014. Gross margin, operating income and diluted earnings per share ("EPS") for the quarter were $14.93 billion, $5.84 billion and $0.54 per share, respectively.

These financial results include $1.14 billion of integration and restructuring expenses, or an $0.11 per share negative impact, related to both Microsoft's restructuring plan announced in July 2014 and the ongoing integration of the Nokia Devices and Services ("NDS") business.

"We are innovating faster, engaging more deeply across the industry, and putting our customers at the center of everything we do, all of which positions Microsoft for future growth," said Satya Nadella, chief executive officer of Microsoft. "Our teams are delivering on our core focus of reinventing productivity and creating platforms that empower every individual and organization."

"We delivered a strong start to the year, with continued cloud momentum and meaningful progress across our device businesses," said Amy Hood, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Microsoft. "We will continue to invest in high-growth opportunities and drive efficiencies across the organization to deliver long-term shareholder value."

Devices and Consumer revenue grew 47% to $10.96 billion, with the following business highlights:

    • Office 365 Home and Personal subscribers totaled more than 7 million, representing more than 25% sequential growth over the previous quarter.
    • Surface Pro 3 momentum drove Surface revenue of $908 million.
    • New Windows consumer licensing programs drove positive unit growth while OEM non-Pro revenue declined 1%.
    • Total Xbox console sales were 2.4 million, growing 102%, and Xbox One launched in 28 new markets.
    • Phone hardware revenue exceeded $2.6 billion with ongoing focus on execution discipline.

Commercial revenue grew 10% to $12.28 billion, with the following business highlights:
    • Server products and services revenue increased 13%, with double-digit growth for SQL Server, System Center and Windows Server.
    • Office Commercial products and services revenue grew 5% as customers transition to Office 365.
    • Commercial cloud revenue grew 128% driven by Office 365, Azure and Dynamics CRM.
    • Lync, SharePoint and Exchange, our productivity server offerings, collectively grew double-digits.
    • Windows volume licensing revenue increased 10%.

"Customers are embracing our latest technologies from Surface Pro 3 and Office 365 to Azure and SQL Server," said Kevin Turner, chief operating officer of Microsoft. "Through great execution by our sales teams and our partners, we have been able to deliver our truly differentiated value to the marketplace."

Há uma coisa a considerar, esse recorde é apenas para as receitas.
Os lucros baixaram em relação ao ano passado. Estamos a falar de 5.4 mil milhões, para 4.5 mil milhões.

    Rahul Sood deixa a Microsoft.

You might remember Rahul Sood as the founder of VoodooPC, especially when he cut his birthday cake with that first-gen MacBook Air all that time ago. Well, Sood has left his post at Microsoft, to form his own gaming company known as Unikrn.

Sood took to his LinkedIn page where he said that he's leaving a dream job, but adds that "this is the kind of crazy shit entrepreneurs do (or at least I keep telling myself that!". Sood started VoodooPC, something that was purchased by HP in 2008, and has been a part of the gaming community since, even joining Microsoft as the GM of Xbox, but moved over to helping early stage startups.

Microsoft Regains Position As World's Second Most Valuable Company

In a couple of recent Microsoft-related posts I've written, I've highlighted fact that the company's been doing quite well - and making some excellent changes - ever since Satya Nadella came on as CEO, Simply put, there have been way too many improvements made since that position shift to call it a coincidence.
With the help of the updated S&P 500 Index, we see Microsoft slide right on past Exxon Mobil to settle in behind Apple in the #2 position. Microsoft achieved this with its market cap of $408.7 billion - $6 billion ahead of Exxon Mobil. It'd be nice to see Microsoft continue its trend, and edge closer to Apple, but I'm doubtful the Cupertino firm is too worried at this point - its market cap is a staggering $669.6 billion.
With the trends we've been seeing, it seems unlikely that Microsoft's momentum will be dying down anytime soon. In the past three weeks alone, we saw the company begin offering unlimited storage to Office 365 customers, announce its plans to open source its .NET server-side software, assure Windows Phone 8 owners that they'll receive WP10, and along that same line, it also launched its first non-Nokia Lumia, the 535.

Microsoft Wants to Use Minecraft as a Development Tool For Next Generation of Users

Microsoft broke out the check book when it decided to pay $2.5 billion for Mojang, developer behind the extremely popular title Minecraft, but it left many people wondering why the studio would want to do that.
Beyond the potential of just creating video games, there is something more to Microsoft’s strategy: trying to inspire the next-generation of business users at a young age.
Here is what Jeff Teper, Microsoft Corporate VP of Corporate Strategy, recently said at the UBS Global Technology Conference:
“Minecraft is a development tool. People build worlds out of it. IF we can get eight-year-old girls and boys building worlds and getting inspired by creating content digitally, as they grow up they’ll want to create in PowerPoint, or Visual Studio. And in addition to being one of the few gaming franchises that doesn’t have to be freemium, Minecraft can actually charge money. It turns out it’s a great business with lots of upside.”
It would make sense – at a time when people enjoy buying the latest and greatest generation of electronics – trying to recruit people into some of these fields can be difficult. Even more complicated, trying to ensure newer generations of future business people want to use software – whether for work or play – to enjoy their software experience.

Barnes & Noble, Microsoft end their fruitless Nook partnership

Microsoft entered into a strategic partnership with Barnes & Noble in 2012. After two years, however, both parties realized things weren’t working out and have mutually decided to terminate the agreement – proving that the coming together of two huge brands doesn’t always guarantee success.Barnes & Noble is also buying back the 17.6 percent stake that Microsoft owned for $62.7 million and roughly 2.7 million Barnes & Noble shares. That's a far cry from the $300 million that Microsoft initially invested.
The partnership was expected to help finance the bookseller’s international expansion and assist Microsoft in breaking into the e-book industry. By all account, it doesn’t appear as though either side got much out the deal as Nook’s international expansion never really took off.

Barnes & Noble’s Nook enjoyed some early success when it launched in 2009 but has ultimately ended up costing the company hundreds of millions of dollars. Some would argue that the Nook failed by no fault of its own but rather increased competition from Amazon’s Kindle and Apple’s iPad.
