Sony Hackers Threaten to Attack Screenings of ‘The Interview’

‘Guardians of Peace’, the group claiming responsibility for the recent Sony hack, has warned that anyone planning to watch the ‘The Interview’ – the comedy film about an attempted assassination of Kim Jong-un that seems to have motivated the attack in the first place – could be putting themselves in great danger.
Someone claiming affiliation with ‘Guardians of Peace’ posted the following message to Pastebin:
We will clearly show it to you at the very time and places “The Interview” be shown, including the premiere, how bitter fate those who seek fun in terror should be doomed to. Soon all the world will see what an awful movie Sony Pictures Entertainment has made.
The world will be full of fear.
Remember the 11th of September 2001.
We recommend you to keep yourself distant from the places at that time.
(If your house is nearby, you’d better leave.)
Whatever comes in the coming days is called by the greed of Sony Pictures Entertainment.
All the world will denounce the SONY.
‘Guardians of Peace’ have already promised a series of “Christmas presents” for Sony, thought to include the release of Sony Pictures CEO Michael Lynton’s personal e-mails.

Sony Hackers GOP Threaten "The Interview" Moviegoers, Suggesting 9/11 Terrorism

Things just keep going from bad to worse for Sony and the upcoming release of “The Interview,” a film that plots the assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The company was hit with a massive cyberattack in November and the resultant fallout has included leaked internal documents, social security numbers of employees, and email exchanges between Sony executives and top Hollywood stars.

Sony employees and their families have also been targeted with threats, and the perpetrators of the attack — which call ironically call themselves Guardians of Peace (#GOP) — have even resorted to blackmail schemes to further them.

Now things are just getting to the point of ridiculousness, as the hackers are now claiming that they will attack movie theaters that dare to screen “The Interview.” And if the threat of attacks weren't enough, the hackers went for a gaping wound in the American psyche by bringing up comparisons to the attacks that occurred in the United States on September 11, 2001.

In a message released with the latest “Christmas gift” batch of leaked files, #GOP chillingly states, “Soon all the world will see what an awful movie Sony Pictures Entertainment has made. The world will be full of fear.

“Remember the 11th of September 2001. We recommend you to keep yourself distant from the places at that time.”

At this time, the Department of Homeland Security doesn’t appear to be taking these threats very seriously according to ABC News. "We are still analyzing the credibility of these statements,” said a department official. “But at this time there is no credible intelligence to indicate an active plot against movie theaters within the United States.”

James Franco (L) and Seth Rogan (R) star in "The Interview" (source: Columbia Pictures)

“You have to take these types of threats seriously up to a point, but this sounds more like a hoax," added Matt Olson, a former director of the National Counterterrorism Center.

"The Interview" stars Seth Rogan and James Franco are taking the threats to heart, and have called off all upcoming press appearances related to the film. However, the pair did get in one final interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America” before their self-imposed “blackout period.”

"I know that it has been the center of a lot of media attention lately,” said Rogan. “It is weird because we just wanted to make a really funny, entertaining movie and the movie itself is very silly and wasn't meant to be controversial in any way."

“We set out to make a movie that was really entertaining to audiences and I genuinely think we did that,” added Franco. “And that's where my job ends."

Kim Jong-un's father was the main protagonist in the 2005 film "Team America: World Police" (source: Paramount Pictures)

It’s hard to believe that so much rancor is stirring over a comedy starring Seth Rogan and James Franco. Nearly a decade ago, North Korea’s [then] supreme leader Kim Jong-il was the target of mockery and an on-screen assassination in the film “Team America: World Police.” That movie, which went on to gross over $50 million worldwide, was likely just as tasteless to North Korea, but wasn’t met with nearly as much blowback as “The Interview.”

Sony allowing movie theaters to pull 'The Interview' before release

The hacker group reportedly behind a major cyberattack against Sony Pictures Entertainment is getting what they want - as Sony tells theaters they don't need to show "The Interview" due to terror threats. The movie is scheduled for release on Christmas, Dec. 25, and it would appear some theaters have already said they won't show the controversial film.

Movie theaters that decide to still show the film plan to use additional security - even if there has been no credible evidence a plot is in place - with AMC, Cinemark, Regal and Carmike all suffering a drop in stock values because of the threat.

"Somebody is playing mind games with [Sony]," said Richard Clarke, cybersecurity expert and former White House counter-terrorism lead, in a statement published by Good Morning America. "I think North Korea has little or no capability to do any physical attacks, commando activity, or terrorism in the U.S. By saying it's coming, however, they hope to keep people from the theaters and, thereby, hurt Sony's revenue."

Reddit Bans Subforum and User Accounts after Sony Warns Media Outlets to Stop Sharing Leaked Data

As Sony faces threats from hackers who have been targeting the company for past few weeks, the company has managed to compel Reddit to stop file-sharing of stolen data including unreleased movies, insider financial information, and executives’ private emails among other data.
    Reddit bans Sony file-sharing:

Sony has apparently managed to persuade Reddit to block the sub-forum sharing critical files including confidential communications and unreleased movies from Sony hack. While Sony keeps experiencing consequences of this attack, the ban on Reddit sub-forum might help the Studio a little. Sony issued a takedown notice citing the American Digital Millennium Copyright Act following which Reddit has blocked the subreddit which has become both the discussion forum and a go-to place for leaked Sony content links and details.
According to Business Insider, discussions and news stories of the Sony hack are still allowed on the site, however, Reddit has deleted posts and blocked user accounts along with closing the SonyGOP subreddit. Sony has been taking this legal strategy to impede dissemination of the leaked data from media outlets to lessen any further damage. Sony Pictures Entertainment sent out a warning letter to media companies stating that,

[Sony] does not consent to your possession, review, copying, dissemination, publication, uploading, downloading or making any use [stolen information]… If you don’t comply with this request, [Sony] will have no choice but to hold you responsible for any damage or loss arising from such use or dissemination by you.”
On November 22, US entertainment giant Sony Pictures suffered a devastating hack that has been damaging the company and the industry using confidential data, internal communications, and unreleased movies. An unknown group calling itself Guardian of Peace (GOP) has claimed the responsibility of this attack. In the recent of this blow that Sony has been facing, the company’s film The Interview has been cancelled as hackers threatened to attack US cinemas screening the studio’s film. The Interview is a comedy about the assassination of the North Korea’s president.

Sony Cancels December 25 Theatrical Release of ‘The Interview’, Set For Huge Loss

The terrorists win! It looks as those that perpetrated the incredible Sony hack in late November have gotten their wish. We reported earlier this morning that Carmike Cinemas got cold feet following the threat of 9/11-style attacks and decided not to show “The Interview” in its 254 theaters.

That was obviously a devastating body blow for Sony, which has already suffered so much from the cyberattack. But this afternoon, we learned that four additional theaters chains pulled support for the film, effectively giving Sony and “The Interview” a knockout punch that will result in losses in the millions (if not hundreds of millions once the postmortem of the hack is conducted). The four additional chains include AMC Entertainment, Cinemark, Cineplex Entertainment, and Regal Entertainment Group.

The companies represent the five largest theater chains in the America, and were Sony’s only hope of turning a profit on this film following the huge cloud of negativity and blowback that has resulted from the buildup to its release.

The final straw for the theater chains came yesterday, when Guardians of Peace (#GOP) issued the following threat, “Remember the 11th of September 2001. We recommend you to keep yourself distant from the places at that time.”

Although most security analysts feel that there is zero substance to these threats, companies like Regal Entertainment Group and Carmike Cinemas don’t want to take that chance. "Due to the wavering support of the film The Interview by Sony Pictures, as well as the ambiguous nature of any real or perceived security threats, Regal Entertainment Group has decided to delay the opening of the film in our theaters," said The Regal Entertainment Group in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.
With the odds stocked against it, Sony this afternoon announced that it has cancelled the December 25 release of “The Interview.” In a statement released to Variety, Sony stated, "In light of the decision by the majority of our exhibitors not to show the film The Interview, we have decided not to move forward with the planned December 25 theatrical release.”

Latest Sony Leaks Reveals How MPAA Want To Change DNS

It’s no secret that the MPAA are wanting to take stronger measures against piracy, but recent Sony leaks suggest they’re pushing to crack down even harder than they already are; they want to target the internet’s Domain Name System (DNS).
The plan was first proposed as part of SOPA a few years ago, but as many of you know, it failed to pass Congress after a lot of protesting and complaints. New information suggests that the MPAA’s lawyers have been looking for a way to use the tactic under existing law, allowing them to remove offending sites from DNS, effectively removing them from the internet phonebook and preventing people from finding the sites. Of course, the major issue here is, who defines what an infringing site is and will we just end up with a trimmed down internet that only shows sites deemed suitable for us.
“A takedown notice program, therefore, could threaten ISPs with potential secondary liability in the event that they do not cease connecting users to known infringing material through their own DNS servers,” the letter reads. “While not making it impossible for users to reach pirate sites (i.e., a user could still use a third-party DNS server), it could make it substantially more complicated for casual infringers to reach pirate sites if their ISPs decline to assist in the routing of communications to those sites.”
It’s a brute force tactic and one that would be very effective, but currently it’s also illegal to do so. Even current DMCA notices walk a fine line, as they’re often handed out broadly and without proper investigation. Worst case scenario is we end up with people using dodgy DNS servers, exposing themselves to severe security issues in the process.
SOPA may be dead, but those behind it are still trying to find ways of rebranding it and making it law.

US officials identify North Korea as the source behind Sony hacks

The Sony hacking scandal continues, with most US theaters pulling the Seth Rogen and James Franco comedy from screening when it launches next week. Now, US officials are reportedly set to blame North Korea for the Sony Pictures Entertainment hack, after identifying the rogue country as the point of origin.

The US government has said that North Korea was "centrally involved" even though the attack may have been launched from another origin. There's no exact word on what we should expect the US government to add here, but it's going to get very interesting. One thought: if North Korea is a backwards as the world thinks it is, this is a damn huge job for them to pull off on their own. Hacking one of the biggest companies in the world, leaving various three-letter authorities completely baffled on who did it for a while there.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema replaces The Interview with Team America

One of the biggest stories of the past few weeks, has been the ongoing hacking of Sony by the organisation known as the Guardians of Peace. Most of it, while damaging to Sony has been rather benign, but most recently, the group threatened “9/11″ like attacks on any Cinemas that showed the movie. In response, many theatres pulled it and Sony officially pushed the film’s release back to an unspecified date yesterday. The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema however has taken a much more ‘Merica step and announced a 10 year anniversary showing of Team America instead of the planned The Interview screening.
Of course, Team America is the last time that someone made a movie that bashed North Korea and its leader (at the time) Kim Jong Il. Although satirically critical of American patriotism, Alamo Drafthouse is going to use it for a patriotic evening involving flags, singalongs of the movie’s soundtrack and American themed balloons!

‘Finally, the world will no longer laugh at North Korea!’
“The world is different in 2014 than it was in 2004. Kim Jong Il is gone. I don’t know if Michael Moore is still around or not. But a lot of the brilliance in TEAM AMERICA is timeless,” reads the Alamo’s announcement. “Acting is still the greatest gift any human being can possess, and it’s the only way to save America from the terrorists. Puppet f***cking is still awesome. And Matt Damon is still Matt Damon.”

Google Speaks Out Over Secret Attacks by Hollywood

The recent Sony Pictures hack revealed that the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) had organised a secret campaign against Google, going so far as to pay Attorneys General to do their bidding, due to the perception that the search engine was facilitating online piracy. Now Google has responded to the secret attacks.

“We are deeply concerned about recent reports that the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) led a secret, coordinated campaign to revive the failed SOPA legislation through other means,” Google wrote on their blog on Thursday. “While we of course have serious legal concerns about all of this, one disappointing part of this story is what this all means for the MPAA itself, an organization founded in part ‘to promote and defend the First Amendment and artists’ right to free expression. Why, then, is it trying to secretly censor the Internet?”

The MPAA is yet to comment on the details of the leak.

Author Wants To Give The Interview Away On BitTorrent

While this is never going to happen, I like the way the guy thinks.

Sony may have withdrawn The Interview but not everyone is scared of releasing the movie. Author Paulo Coelho, whose book The Alchemist has sold in excess of 165 million copies, has just offered to buy the rights to the movie from Sony. He informs TorrentFreak that it would go straight on BitTorrent, for free.

Sony's cyberattack likely to become most expensive for a U.S. company

Sony Pictures is facing a public relations nightmare after a major data breach orchestrated by North Korea, and company executives just can't stop the bleeding. The data breach could become the costliest suffered by a U.S. company, with fallout that will surely continue into 2015. Beyond the sensitive documents and personal information stolen, along with the cancellation of "The Interview," there is a strong possibility some actors will avoid Sony in the future.

It remains unclear how much Sony will lose because of the cyberattack, but lawsuits, lost revenue because of "The Interview" being pulled, and other problems will only complicate matters even further.

"This attack went to the heart and core of Sony's business and succeeded," said Avivah Litan, Gartner cybersecurity analyst. "We haven't seen any attack like this in the annals of U.S. breach history."

North Korean hackers might set sights on US telecom, infrastructure

North Korea could be using the cyberattack against Sony Pictures as a test run to try out its budding cyber capabilities, with the reclusive government potentially taking aim at US energy companies and critical infrastructure. Despite much of the Western world ignoring its growing cyber ambitions, it looks like North Korea has been able to increase its cyber weapons.

"North Korea's ultimate goal in cyber strategy is to be able to attack national infrastructure of South Korea and the United States," said Kim Heung-kwang, a North Korean defector and former computer science professor. "The hacking of Sony Pictures is similar to previous attacks that were blamed on North Korea and is a result of training and efforts made with the goal of destroying infrastructure."

The North Korean government has poured resources into its Bureau 121 cyber warfare unit, recruiting some of the nation's best computer experts - with most of the department's agents originating from the North Korean military computer school. It has successfully attacked targets in South Korea on several occasions, as some networks remain vulnerable to attack.
