Huawei enters Android Wear market in style

Spec unknown, but the Huawei Watch is a looker
Look out Moto and LG, you no longer have a monopoly on good looking, round smartwatches – thanks to the guys and gals at Huawei.

The Huawei Watch was leaked in some promo materials yesterday, and since then it has managed to get quite a bit of attention. Following the initial leak, Huawei released two promo videos, then pulled them.
There is still no word on the specs on pricing, but the Huawei Watch looks like it can give the Moto 360 and LG G Watch R/Urbane a run for their money. It’s an all-metal 42mm design, with a number of metallic and leather straps. The watch ticks all the right boxes – sapphire glass on top of a water resistant, stainless steel body available in black, silver and gold.

We can’t say much about the spec, but we don’t expect any big surprises, since practically all Android Wear watches feature similar specs. The price is what we’re really interested in.
Come to think of it, the timing of the leak and the amount of images and video, sans specs, makes me wonder whether or not this was an intentional leak. Weekend ahead of MWC? No specs or pricing, promo videos pulled? Seems like a very convenient “leak” for Huawei, or a masterful PR campaign bound to get the company a lot more coverage than a dull also-ran announcement.

Run Of The Mill Hardware Lurks Beneath Huawei’s Stunning Android Wear Smartwatch

Huawei shocked is all when two videos of its “Huawei Watch” made their way onto YouTube. Combining the naturally good looks of the Motorola Moto 360 with the completely circular display of the LG Watch Urbane makes for a beautiful smartwatch. Throw in the scratch resistant cold-forged stainless steel housing that is available in natural, gold, and black finishes, and you have what looks to be a winner.

However, we have to remember that this is still an Android Wear device, and Google has a lot of say over what these smartwatches can and can’t do. So while OEMs can get a bit inventive with the outward design of their smartwatches, the software and internals don’t vary much between devices.
Inside, you’ll find a 1.2GHz Qualcomm processor with 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, Bluetooth 4.1, a heart rate sensor, a 6-axis motion sensor, and a barometer – all run-of-the-mill Android Wear specs. The centerpiece of the smartwatch, however, is of course its 1.4-inch AMOLED display (400x400 resolution, 286 ppi) that’s covered by scratchproof sapphire glass.

Unfortunately, there is no official pricing for the Huawei Watch yet, but we do know that it will launch in the United States (score!). Other confirmed global markets include The United Kingdom, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Norway, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and United Arab Emirates.

The Huawei smartwatch could cost as much as $1000

Huawei announced its own entry in to the smartwatch arena earlier this week, showing off a sleek design, circular watch face and Android Wear integration. Unfortunately though, all of this could come at a serious price as the watch may go for as much as $1000 once released.
The device was initially announced at the Mobile World Congress this month and it came as quite the surprise. However, the premium design is going to come at a cost according to new reports.

According to sources speaking with BGR, the Huawei smart watch could come with a $1000 price tag, which is much higher than other Android Wear watches currently on the market. If this price is accurate, then it is likely down to the build materials rather than the hardware inside.
The top of the watch for instance will be covered in Sapphire glass. Something that the Moto 360 was originally rumored to do last year.

Huawei Watch to cost €349 in Europe

Retailer confirms, ships mid-April
A DACH retailer has leaked the MSRP for the upcoming Huawei Watch and it’s €349.

The watch was officially announced at MWC in Barcelona, and it was showered in praise thanks to its sleek design and impressive spec.
Like other Android Wear devices, it’s powered by a quad-core SoC clocked at 1.2GHz, with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage. However, it has a 1.4-inch 400x400 display, which is a tad better than what you’d get on a Moto 360 or LG G Watch R.
Anyway, €349 is the official price for the black version, while the gold one with a leather strap should come in at €399. This is what we heard from the retailer:

We were unable to confirm the price for the silver version, although we expect it to come in at €349.

The Huawei Watch delayed until Q3, but expect possible design changes

Huawei has been forced to delay the launch its debut smartwatch, caused by an unknown problem in China. The smartwatch, powered by Google Android Wear, will be released in the United States and Europe sometime during Q3 - and suspected issues stem from Google services used in China.

"We're experiencing some problems with Google's Android Wear [the watch's operating system] in China," Yang said, in a statement published by the Wall Street Journal. "It's a new product."

It looks like Huawei will leave the hardware specifications alone for the watch: 1.4-inch AMOLED (400x400) display, 1.2GHz Qualcomm processor, 512MB RAM, and 4GB of storage capacity. The watch is just 11.3mm thick and is powered by a 300 mAh battery.

Even with the Android Wear problems, don't look for Huawei to abandon ship anytime soon - the company will continue utilizing the OS for future smartwatch models. Huawei doesn't plan on trying to release a flood of new watches, and will make changes as needed, based on feedback from customers.

Huawei Breathes At LG's Golden Back

Launches an Android Watch with a premium option on Wednesday
Today seems to be the day for upscale Android Watch news. Not to be outclassed by the likes of LG or Apple, Huawei is going to launch its Android Watch contender with a premium version this Wednesday.

As we find out from Huawei's invitation to a product launch at IFA in Berlin, their Android Watch is ready for the awaiting public with not enough notifications in their lives. It's coming on Wednesday, priced at $349.
Seeing how Google learned from the mess of Android phone OS fragmentation and the difficulties with maintenance, updates and security patches that causes, Android Watch is completely locked down. Which makes pretty much every new product that comes with it totally unexciting, feature-wise.
So poor hardware manufacturers are left with very limited options for product differentiation and some of them are now turning to offering "high end" versions bathed in gold. Well, if Apple and LG can do it, why shouldn't LG, or now Huawei?! And therefore we will be able to purchase a $799 gold version.

Now, we've seen the leaked images of Huawei's design, as have you probably, so let's discuss that briefly. It's a round watch face, with quite slim bezels. Well done Huawei! Let's just hope that the (small?) battery will last long enough not to drive us insane.

The watch clearly also features heart rate sensor on the back, which is more or less standard these days. However, so far we haven't really seen any wrist-worn gadgets which can track the heart rate when it matters the most, during exercise. Here's hoping that improvement is coming soon.

Now, regarding the actual design of the Huawei watch. How can we put this so it doesn't hurt. Basically, it looks like a cheap Chinese knock-off. So what in the name of lord our savior (just kidding) will the real cheap Chinese knock-offs look like then?! Let's keep that in mind when designing the next year's model, ok Huawei?!

Huawei Watch heading to the US later this month starting at $350

Huawei announced earlier today at the IFA trade show that its Android Wear smartwatch will be landing on US soil later this month.
The wearable features a 42mm round face and body constructed of 316L cold-forged stainless steel with a double layer of scratch-resistant sapphire crystal covering the 1.4-inch AMOLED, 400 x 400 pixel (286 ppi) display. It accepts standard-sized lugs, making it compatible with virtually any other 18mm band.
Specification-wise, the Huawei Watch features an always-on watch face, Wi-Fi connectivity for use when a phone isn’t paired or in range, Bluetooth 4.1 LE connectivity and an enhanced heart rate monitor. It is powered by a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 SoC clocked at 1.2GHz alongside 512MB of RAM and is compatible with both Android and iOS. A 300mAh battery keeps things going for up to two days, Huawei claims.
The Chinese company is offering several different versions of its smartwatch. Pricing starts at $349 for a stainless steel model with a black leather band. For an additional $50, you can bump up to either a steel link bracelet or a stainless steel mesh band.
There’s also a black-coated stainless steel model with matching black link bracelet for $449, a rose gold-plated variant with alligator-pressed brown leather for $699 and a rose gold-plated model with matching rose gold-plated link bracelet for $799.
Huawei is accepting pre-orders for select models as of writing (all but the rose gold options which are expected later this year) with plans to launch on September 17.

Huawei has made phones, tablets, and other gizmos for years, though it has had more success in Asia than in the U.S. Standing out in the U.S. marketplace is difficult. A company typically won't get very far without wide distribution and a massive marketing budget. The Huawei Watch is the type of device that can be the foundation of a widespread marketing push to advance the brand in this market -- it is a beautiful device. Given that it is still the early days in the smartwatch game, with only a handful of competitors to speak of, the company has a good chance or reaching the average consumer, that maybe scouring the web for smartwatch reviews and other details.

If much of that list looks familiar to you, fret not. Much of what is inside the Huawei Watch is also inside of Motorola's second-generation Moto 360, which we recently reviewed. Right down to the CPU, the RAM, and the ROM, the two watches share similar internals. With the holidays approaching, we have seen a large number of wearable electronics to hit shelves. While many of these devices are fun, there are few that are functional and stylish. Many of the fitness bands look pretty much like oversized rubber bands on your wrist, while some smartwatches are oversized and gaudy. If you haven’t heard of Huawei then you probably don’t live in China where Huawei Technologies is a multi-billion dollar (USD) telecommunications company that has their core business rooted in telecommunications (networking services, etc.), creating enterprise business through hardware and software, and finally, a consumer electronics division that has sold over 150 million mobile devices over the past year.




The Huawei Smartwatch that we have today is the Black Stainless Steel model with the Black Stainless Steel Link Band that retails for $449.99 (comparable to the Apple Watch priced at $549). Huawei ships the smartwatch in a very decorative box which reminds you that their product is more high quality craftsmanship than it is gimmicky wearable device. We think the inscription on the inside of the box is very appropriate, “Timeless design, smart within”.

Here is a gallery of the Huawei Watch Black Stainless Steel with Black Stainless Steel Link Band that we received as a loaner to review. The 1.4″ full circle AMOLED display looks sharp and the glass is scratch resistant sapphire crystal. For those that are curious the display on this watch has a 400 x 400 resolution and the pixels per inch (PPI) pretty good as when the second hand is ticking is acceptable looking. Like all Android watches the watch face changes after a few seconds as ambient mode will help save the battery life. The Huawei Smartwatch looks and feels like it has a high quality construction and really is one of the best built smart watches that we’ve seen as it’s certainly a step up from the Moto 360 or ASUS Zenwatch. The stainless steel body contains a Gyro that is sensitive as you’d expect from a luxury Android smart watch that you are paying $450 for.
Inside this watch there is also a speaker, but Huawei did not enable it. We aren’t sure why it isn’t enabled, but if the company enables software support for the speaker down the road it could unlock a number of possibilities that you can do with the watch. Rumor has it that Android Wear Software doesn’t support speakers just yet, but from the looks of this watch, Google is looking into it.
