2K’s New XCOM Game Will Be Announced on Monday; Count Down Revealed

Yesterday we reported that 2K Games’ “Advent” teaser site is actually for a new XCOM game, and today further “hacking” revealed a counter. The counter indicates that the reveal of the game is coming in two days, meaning on Monday, as you can see below.
Interestingly, the fourth “testimonial” picture has now also been “hacked” but it’s different from the other three. While the previous cases were replaced by a “Missing” notice, the last announced the rescue of the testimonial.
While there’s no firm information for now, this may mean that one of the roles of the player in the new game will be to rescue those abducted by Advent.
This is just my personal speculation for now, but the new XCOM game might include a more subtle threat than what we’re used to, with the aliens using the corporation named Advent as a cover to operate on Earth, and the XCOM taking up the role of an underground organization that fights them.
A scenario like that would definitely be intriguing, but we’ll have to wait for Monday in order to know.

XCOM 2 Officially Announced as PC Exclusive; Stunning Trailer and Screenshots Released

2K Games have been teasing a new game with the Advent site for the past few days, and today the company officially announced XCOM 2, the sequel to the critically acclaimed XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

XCOM 2 is set to release for PC in November, and is under development by Firaxis Games. Set twenty years into the future, after humanity has lost the war against the aliens. Feral Interactive will develop a port for Mac and Linux, but no console version has been announced.
“In XCOM 2, the roles have been reversed, and XCOM is now the invading force. They are hampered by limited resources and must constantly evade the alien threat in their new mobile headquarters. Players must use a combination of firepower and stealth-like tactics to help XCOM recruit soldiers and build a resistance network, while attempting to expose the evil alien agenda and save humanity. XCOM 2 will introduce gameplay features such as procedurally-generated levels, which will make each experience unique to the player, as well as offer a much deeper level of modding support. Additionally, XCOM 2 will offer a variety of new content including five updated soldier classes, increased soldier customization, more alien and enemy types, evolved tactical combat”

2K Games President Christoph Hartmann stated:

“Firaxis proved they could reimagine a beloved franchise with XCOM: Enemy Unknown, a Game of the Year award-winning title. With XCOM 2, the team is breathing new life into the series by adding an epic narrative and challenging players to overcome near impossible odds.”
Creative Director Jake Solomon promises that the game will be solidly based on fans’ feedback received after the first game:
“The feedback from the passionate XCOM community played an important role in the development of XCOM 2, driving us to push the visual, gameplay and replayability boundaries of what a strategy game can be. We’re thrilled to implement long-time fan requested features such as procedural levels and modding support, as well as adding more of what makes XCOM great like new aliens, enemies and soldier classes.”
XCOM 2 looks absolutely amazing, and fans of the series will definitely looks forward to its release in November. We will surely get a first glimpse of the title in action with some gameplay footage at E3 2015 later this month. We will bring you any new information on XCOM 2 as soon as it becomes available.

Excelentes noticias. E se for um exclusivo PC, não temos de nos preocupar com downgrades gráficos, simplificação da jogabilidade para casuais, nem com interface estilo consolas.

Creative Director For XCOM 2 Clarifies Why its a PC Exclusive

The announcement of the next XCOM 2 was an appreciable surprise that seemed to come with caveats that wasn’t so well received by everyone. The issue of PC exclusivity was quickly pointed out as a theoretical weakness for such a superb series. The XCOM 2 creative director stepped forward with IGN with an explanation as to why.

Jake Solomon came forward about the merits of PC exclusivity for XCOM 2, and how exclusive can mean a better end product for everyone.

XCOM 2 is already a very formidable project, with a media reveal that was designed to foretell the large vision they have. John Solomon stated that they have some “very ambitious goals,” with this sequel. There are elements and a level of visual fidelity that might not necessarily be achievable with consoles. Particle effects, physics, models and polygon counts are going to potentially be incredible in this game.
They want it to be fantastic, and the PC makes the most sense to realize that goal. And they wanted to give something back to the original fans but focusing on the platform from whence it was born.
Internally, with a relatively small team for the size of the game that we are, to be able to say we can focus on our platform that the studio has a pedigree for, and that X-COM: UFO Defense has a pedigree for, as PC-only… it just made a lot of sense, and that’s how we wanted to dedicate our time.
    – Jake Solomon
Even though the engine used is a heavily modified Unreal Engine 3.5, it’s so deeply modified that it makes sense for them to focus on one platform alone. The hardware available to them will also be orders of magnitude more powerful, meaning that the highest settings can potentially be very powerful indeed.

Focusing on one platform also means that the input and control scheme can be perfected and actually be made to work very well. The UI and how the mouse interacts with the screen can be optimized so that it works really well, as opposed to an incomplete port.
When we have our meetings, when we talk about stuff, we only talk about PC. We talk about, ‘What is the experience like on PC? What does the mouse feel like in this experience?
    -John Solomon
While the Xbox One and PS4 certainly are powerful enough to run the game, or most games, at some type of settings, the development on three different platforms simultaneously just isn’t something feasible, and the quality could potentially drop, and they don’t want that.
We’ve seen the effect that porting a game or simultaneous development can have on the final product. Even GTA V had teething issues on the PC due to the nature of the original platform. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is also no stranger to performance and other issues likely due to its being developed at the same time. This focus can only provide us a better product and a much better game.
Just because it’s designed as a PC exclusive initially doesn’t mean that it won’t eventually see consoles at some point. Perhaps in the future either another developer or Firaxis themselves will find it in their hearts to give consoles a bone. It’s not outside the realm of possibility at least.

E3 2015 Eyes On, Fighting the Overlords in XCOM 2

XCOM 2’s novel marketing website that lead us to believe that it was initially a new IP called Advent has created quite the stir among the gaming community. We were able to take a look at some of the gameplay they had at E3, and while it’s much of the same, there appears to be some very significant improvements, even in the Alpha build.

XCOM 2 offers new classes, new enemies, new weapons and a very interesting story. More importantly, modding!

The demo for XCOM 2 starts with an in-game cinematic explaining the special day that’s about to unfold. It’s Unification Day on Earth, the day marking the conquering of Earth by the Alien races, the Elders, and the institution of a global government. A monument has been erected in the center of the city, and destroying it will be a great symbolic victory for the cause.
The UI and general animations are all very similar to what we know from XCOM: Enemy Unknown, great amounts of detail on the characters, exceptional weapons effects and a general fluidity to the movements of your teammates. What really shines through is the quick paced combat and easy movements from cover to cover. We were promised much more continuous and flowing combat sequences, and so far it seems that they’ve delivered that. XCOM 2 is a lot more action packed then what I remember from XCOM: Enemy Unknown.
They showed off two new classes in the demo, the Ranger and the Specialist. The Ranger is a close-quarter fighter, with the ability to rush enemies and use a bladed weapon to dispatch enemies. The animation they showed of the Ranger running up towards the Advent security and slicing him up was really neat, very well done. The Specialist is a technical class that has a Gremlin drone that follows them around, able to attack and also hack various pieces of technology. They showed the Gremlin taking control of a turret that then made quick work of the remaining enemies.

So, indeed, XCOM 2 is much of the same concept with a graphical tweaks (it’s running Unreal Engine 3) and an infusion of new content. Based on the unique continuation of the story of the previous game, and the setting, it could very well differentiate itself as a completely new game and not feel like an expansion. The ability to mod will be a great addition, however.
The problem lies in when developers don’t do much to differentiate, where there is nothing that truly sets it a part from even the others in the same series. Some new content and a graphics refresh just aren’t enough to justify the cost sometimes, especially if it’s not very long. They have a chance to incrementally improve the genre and the series to attract a larger player base. I just hope they take that opportunity by the horns. If the story is expansive and the unit customization just as or more extensive then it could very well be a very good game. So far it looks great, but a demo at E3 never truly captures the real essence of what they’re trying to accomplish. So we shall see what the future has in store for XCOM 2.

XCOM 2 Details – The Chryssalid, a Most Fierce and Terrifying Alien Overlord

The XCOM universe is full of imaginative alien species with surprisingly deep background stories. The original XCOM (UFO: Enemy Unknown) from 1994 had quite the profound backstory. And that complex backdrop continues on in XCOM 2. Because, what would you expect from an actual expanding franchise?
To highlight all of the work that Firaxis and 2K are putting into getting things right, Gamespot has spoken with the lead producer, Garth DeAngelis, about those details by talking about the menacing overlord, the Chryssalid.

XCOM 2 is at least setting itself up for success in a lot of great ways.

They’re very passionate about bringing back the things that we’ve loved thus far in all of the games. That passion has the potential to translate into something truly great. In this case they’re redesigning a very terrifying alien, and so far it looks quite good. Take a look at what the lead producer has to say:
“The chryssalid is very much still one of the alien occupiers of Earth. They are against XCOM. They will never become a part of your army. We had to have them come back. They’ve been a staple of XCOM, harkening back to the original UFO defense. A couple of decades have taken place since you lost in Enemy Unknown. A lot of the enemies have evolved. Now, the chryssalid, they’re a little bit too crazy of a species to integrate human DNA into them, but they have evolved. They’ve received some upgrades. What they did in Enemy Unknown, is they implanted XCOM with something that would then breed another chryssalid out of them, if you remember. It was a pretty terrifying sequence. Design said, “How can we make this crazier?

Of course, design-wise, we had to do a few tweaks that are happening now to make sure that it’s not unfair. I think if people hear three chryssalids at the same exact hit points that we had in Enemy Unknown, it was enough trouble dealing with them what they were. They’re a little bit more brittle in XCOM 2. They can be taken down a little bit easier, but it is overwhelming just to see the sheer number of volume that can come at you if you allow them to go through this cocoon process.
That’s not the only thing they can do. They can do one other really cool thing. What else would make a chryssalid more terrifying? If they could disappear. Now they can actually burrow underground. When you’re walking through maps, you don’t know where they are, if they’ve burrowed underground. We will have counterplay that we’re not talking about now through items and gear to be able to get in front of that if you choose to, but at any moment, and this actually happened to me the other day, you’re walking along, and a chryssalid literally jumped out of the ground and took me down. I had no idea they were there. They are nightmarish. They are very terrifying. We wanted to push them further. We love them as an iconic alien in XCOM franchise, and those are the things that they can do.
    – Garth DeAngelis

Because of the surprise that XCOM Enemy Unknown was in how it furthered the XCOM franchise, it’s not a terrible thing to think that XCOM 2 might actually be very good. Being a PC exclusive could be it’s savior. Certainly the E3 footage was quite the surprise, so if the final product is anything like that, then it might be very enjoyable.

New XCOM 2 Gamescom Screenshots Show Off the Base, Customization, World Map and Research

2K Games and Firaxis just release some great looking new screenshots at Gamescom 2015 that show off some of other activities that lead up to the harrowing action in XCOM 2.
In these we get a peek at what’s evolved and changed since XCOM: Enemy Unknown. You can get a great look at what soldier customization looks like, what researching will entail and even a small glimpse at the improved world map. Unfortunately, this time the base depicted is secret for a whole host of other reasons.

XCOM 2 looks to be a natural evolution, and hopefully has even more ways to fight the overlords.

XCOM 2 transports players 20 years into the future, where humanity lost the war against the alien threat that has established a new world order. The secret paramilitary organization known as XCOM is largely forgotten, and must strike back to reclaim control of Earth and free mankind from the aliens’ rule.

In XCOM 2,theroles have been reversed, and XCOM is now the invading force. Additionally,XCOM 2 will offer a variety of new content including five updated soldier classes, increased soldier customization, more alien and enemy types, evolved tactical combat and more.
XCOM 2 is releasing in November of this year only on the PC. Any news and we’ll bring it to you as soon as possible.

XCOM 2 Shows Mobile Base ‘Avenger’ In New Gameplay Trailer

2K Games shared a new gameplay video of XCOM 2 today, showing the new mobile base called Avenger.
You’ll be able to check the improved strategy layer of the game, while also taking a look at how to configure the mobile headquarters and how to manage resources and research, customize and recruit soldiers, upgrade weapons, armor and various abilities. This time, the goal is to liberate Earth and free mankind from the new alien overlords.

While Firaxis mentioned that console versions might happen in the future, XCOM 2 is focused on PC for its launch, set for this November. As a result, there will be a proper modding kit for the commuity to play with and to expand the base game.
The development team also worked hard to improve randomization. Procedural generation will make sure that levels are always at least slightly different from each other, thanks to varying objectives, dynamic time of day and weather. Moreover, floors and structures are now destructible.
XCOM 2 has a strong PC focus and will ship with modding tools

XCOM 2 will feature multiplayer too, but details on what’s changed in this mode from Enemy Unknown/Within are still scarce.
Stay tuned and we’ll keep you updated all the way until launch.

Check out 12 minutes of 'Welcome to the Avenger' gameplay from XCOM 2

2K Games and Firaxis Games have released a new 12-minute gameplay video of XCOM 2, with action taking place 20 years after XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Humans lost the war with the aliens, and viewers can take a look at the custom mobile HQ, customization systems, and upgrade paths for weapons, armors, and other characteristics.

Working under the alien regime following a major war, a human resistance is tasked with trying to overthrow the alien race's power.

XCOM 2 is scheduled for release in November, and will be available for PCs, Mac OS, and Linux. A console launch for the Microsoft Xbox One and Sony PlayStation 4 is still possible, but 2K and Firaxis Games haven't announced anything.

XCOM 2 delayed to 2016 on all platforms

Today 2K Games has announced that the RTS sequel the XCOM: Enemy Unknown, XCOM 2, will release in 2016 instead of its original scheduled launch this year.

Firaxis notes that the team just needs more time to make XCOM 2 a worthy successor and an extension will ensure they can make the "best possible game". "We want to give you an update on the release date for XCOM 2," Firaxis Games said in a new update. "We've set a high bar for the sequel and the entire team has been working hard to make sure we deliver a great follow-up to Enemy Unknown. We just need a little more time to make it the best possible game."

"With XCOM 2, we want to have more depth, more replayability, and more investment in your soldiers and this extension will give us the time we need to deliver on our promise to you."

With all of the new features that XCOM 2 brings--enhanced procedurally generated maps, new weapon sets, a stealth system--it's easy to see why Firaxis needs to stretch their development time as much as possible. The studio showed off quite a bit of XCOM 2 gameplay at E3 2015, displaying some impressive RTS combat sequences and how the game seamlessly bleeds in and out of cutscenes.

XCOM 2 is now slated to release on February 5, 2016 for PC, Mac and Linux.

XCOM 2 Lead: PC Gaming Is In A Golden Age

Firaxis Games surprised everyone when it announced that XCOM 2 would be exclusive to PC, at least in the beginning.

In an interview with PC Gamer, Creative Director Jake Solomon explained that the decision is partly based on the current golden age that PC gaming is enjoying and partly on the XCOM heritage.
PC gaming is in a golden age. It’s the tip of the spear in terms of innovation, in types of gameplay being explored, in relationships between developers and their audience, and for Firaxis, it’s our home. It’s where we want to be.
It’s really hard to disagree with him on this point, honestly. PC gaming currently offers so many games that it’s hard to keep track of them all, from the ever-growing wave of indie titles to AAA games; even Japanese companies have massively increased their support of PC gaming, as shown by the release of MGSV: The Phantom Pain (concurrent with consoles) and by yesterday’s announcement that Dragon’ s Dogma: Dark Arisen would finally be available on Steam in January 2016.

Another important reason for XCOM 2’s PC focus is that the game is going to push significantly its support for mods. Senior Producer Garth De Angelis said:
I can tell you a lot of effort has gone in, across the engineering front, [to make sure] that everything can be modded. Obviously we have Unreal Engine 3. We have a modified version of that—so the editor is going to be released. You can either do total conversions, or partial gameplay edits with our gameplay source that we’re going to be providing as well. So if you just want to edit units and stats that’s going to be easy to do if you have the knowledge to do so in the scripts. It’s one of our core pillars in XCOM 2 that we felt like we were short on in Enemy Unknown—that we want to get right.
Ideally, with XCOM 2 gamers will be able to keep playing for a very long time.
Between the procedural maps, between the procedural objectives, the way more enemies and abilities that you’re gonna see, I think that’s right. That’s ultimately what we want to accomplish. We want fans to play much, much longer.
Unfortunately, XCOM 2 won’t make the previously planned release in November. Two weeks ago, 2K and Firaxis announced a delay to February 5, 2016 in order to polish the game; however, three months are a small price to get what looks like another great PC exclusive.

New XCOM 2 Screenshots Showcase Its Beautiful Environments

Firaxis shared some brand new XCOM 2 screenshots that showcase the improvements in graphics quality and variety we can expect in the game.
XCOM 2 was originally scheduled for a November 2015 release, but Firaxis delayed it to February 5, 2016 in order to make it “the best possible game”. Given the insanely packed Holiday release schedule and the additional polish that the game is going to get, they might have made the best choice indeed.

For a turn-based tactics game with an isometric view, these XCOM 2 screenshots are definitely looking good, especially the ones featuring wilderness. Firaxis is still using Unreal Engine 3 (albeit heavily modified), but they’ve introduced new popular techniques such as Physically Based Rendering. Though the developer is not opposed to releasing the game on consoles eventually, XCOM 2 will be a PC exclusive with a strong focus on modding: Firaxis will release both the UDK and the editor they use to create content, allowing creative gamers to make amazing maps & mods and publish them on Steam Workshop.

Another major XCOM 2 feature is procedurally generated levels. This will further increase the game’s longevity, especially since secondary objectives will also be procedurally generated.
XCOM 2 also enables Commanders with the ability to strike first most of the time. Thanks to the new concealment system, clever Commanders will be able to set up ambushes for the aliens, which fits with the overall guerrilla tactics vibe of the game; after all, the premise is that the aliens have conquered the Earth and you’re now leading a resistance movement from your mobile base, the Avenger.
Stay tuned for our ongoing XCOM 2 coverage as the launch gets closer.
