Cryorig H5 and R1 Universal Reviews

Cryorig H5 and R1 Universal Reviews

    Manufacturer: Cryorig
    H5 UK price (as reviewed):
    £45.99 (inc VAT)
H5 US price (as reviewed): $42.25 (ex Tax)
R1 Universal UK price (as reviewed): £72.09 (inc VAT)
R1 Universal US price (as reviewed): $79.99 (ex Tax)

Cryorig isn't a name that's been featured in a bit-tech review so far, partly because the Taiwanese company was only founded in 2013. To make up for lost time, we're looking at two of its coolers today; the single fan, single tower Cryorig H5 and the dual fan, dual tower R1 Universal.

Click to enlarge - The H5 (left) and R1 Universal (right)

While it's the smaller of the two coolers, the H5 is still pretty hefty. It measures in at 160mm tall, which is a safe fit for the majority of ATX towers, though the depth and length of the heatsink mean it will be rather prominent in any such build. It's arguably good, then, that Cryorig has spruced things up a bit by giving the H5 a white plastic top that's also removable.

The H5 uses four 6mm copper heat pipes to draw heat away from the CPU and these, along with the baseplate, are nickel-plated for a consistent finish. Cryorig uses a bee hive shaped fin structure just behind the fan but not at the rear of the cooler, claiming this helps to push air through the cooler faster and also reduce air turbulence.

Click to enlarge - The H5

The supplied fan is one of Cryorig's own; the slimline XT140, which uses a 4-pin PWM connector at the end of a neatly braided cable. Measuring just 13mm deep, it's roughly half has thick as a regular 140mm fan and means that the H5 is 98mm deep with the fan attached, which is enough to avoid conflict with tall memory modules on all sockets. However, the fact that it's so slim will affect its ability to push air through the relatively thick fin stack, though how much that hampers its cooling performance remains to be seen.

Next, we have the R1 Universal, which really is a beast – 168.3mm tall and over 1kg with its fans attached. As with the H5, its copper heat pipes and baseplate are nickel-plated but this time, we're looking at a cooler with a whopping seven 6mm heat pipes all arranged above the baseplate in a single layer. It also has two fin towers, and these are both formed of two halves - one anodised in black and the other a silver one with a white plastic covering. While there is no beehive structure here, the silver half (i.e. the front half) has less fins and wider gaps while the rear, black half has more fins with thinner gaps. Similar to the H5, Cryorig claims this helps to compress the air and increase exhaust speed.

Click to enlarge - The R1 Universal

Between the two towers there's space for a standard depth 140mm fan, with Cryorig supplying its own XF140. Also supplied is the same XT140 slimline fan that the H5 has, which is designed to be installed at the front as the primary intake. A fan splitter cable, which is well braided just like the fan cables themselves, is provided, although there isn't a low noise adaptor. The front slimline fan, along with the cooler towers being offset from centre, should maintain compatibility with tall RAM modules on all sockets except LGA2011(-v3), where the rear of the cooler hangs over some of the secondary DIMM slots. We also had to remove the rear exhaust fan on our LGA1150 system to ensure the cooler could fit because of how far back it extends.

If you're not sure about either cooler fitting, Cryorig has a neat origami feature whereby you can print and fold a to-scale paper model of the cooler and see if it's going to interfere with any of your existing components.

Click to enlarge - The H5 (left) and R1 Universal (right). Note the pre-attached spring-loaded screws

Cryorig's MultiSeg Quick Mount System is used for both the H5 and the R1 Universal and we have to say it's truly fantastic for all sockets. For starters, the fans all come pre-attached with rubber anti-vibration mounts and you don't need to remove them at any point. You get both an Intel and AMD backplate which both have screws built into them – you don't have to fiddle around clipping them into place or anything. The backplate is secured with screw pillars on the front side of the motherboard, and these even have rubber washers fitted for you. LGA2011(-v3) users can skip the backplate altogether, screwing a different set of pillars directly into the socket.

You then secure the two Intel mounting arms or the single AMD mounting plate with four thumb nuts and attach the cooler directly to these. This is achieved using the supplied screwdrivers, which passes through the appropriate fin tower to access the spring-loaded screws that form part of the baseplate. Of course, you'll need some thermal paste first, so it's good that Cryorig provides a nice big tube of its CP9 gunk with each cooler. You also get an extra set of fan clips and rubber fan mounts in case you want to add another fan yourself. Overall, it's a quick installation free of hassle or anything remotely fiddly and is at least as good as Noctua's SecuFirm2 system.

    Reeven Ouranos

    Introduction

    From the Reeven website:
REEVEN is a newly established international manufacturer of PC related products. REEVEN's product lines includes the best quality of advanced CPU coolers, Cooling Fans, Power Supply Units, PC Cases and many other items. the target of our products will be a wide range of audience under our philosophy "Professional Quality Gears", for products that will withstand the highest demand.

When it comes to CPU coolers, fans, power supplies, and accessories, you might be in the dark about Reveen since they are a relatively unknown newcomer to the industry. While new, they have already begun making a name for themselves in the CPU-cooling market, with a large lineup of heatsinks that cover every performance and price segment. Their first offering I reviewed was the Okeanos, a solid heavy weight dual-tower cooler that combined top-tier performance with a bold style. On the other end of the spectrum is the Steropes for those ultra-small mini-ITX systems or everything in between.

In today's review, I look at the Ouranos. It falls into the performance category closer to the high-end rather than near the entry level. It is a single-fan, single-tower cooler that utilizes an offset design to improve memory compatibility. Offering some nice features and some solid specifications, it should perform fairly well. So with that said, it is now time for a closer look.

Noctua NH-C14S C-Type Premium Cooler Review

    Introduction

Noctua, one of most respected names in the cooling industry, are back once again with their latest cooler, the NH-C14S. Those of you who follow Noctua products will notice that the name is rather similar to another very popular Noctua cooler, the NH-C14. The new “S” model takes the award-winning design of the original and improves on it, or at least we hope it has! You’ll find a deeper fin stack and an even more efficient NF-A14 PWM fan.
At almost £60, the NH-C14S is certainly one of the most expensive air coolers on the market, but if previous Noctua products are anything to go by, we can expect one the best in terms of build quality, cooling performance and acoustics. So let’s jump right in and take a closer look at what this new model has to offer.

Inside the very nicely packaged box, you’ll find absolutely everything you need to get yourself setup and ready to rock. Separate installation guides for each socket type, a collection of high-quality screws and bolts, AMD and Intel support brackets, a backplate, screwdriver, thermal paste, extra fan clips and a funky Noctua sticker.

First impressions of the cooler are certainly positive. It’s quite a large unit, giving it a massive amount of surface area, as well as allowing it to handle that lovely and big 140mm fan; both of which will help improve the cooling capabilities.
The fin stack is pretty tight, and the sides are bent to close them off, allowing the fan to better direct airflow right out the top of the cooler and over the heat pipes more efficiently.

The fan does come pre-installed out of the box, but keep in mind that you’ll be needing to remove it in order to install the cooler. The fan is typical Noctua, with the brown design that we’ve all come to love and/or hate. The fan clips are easy enough to use to mount and remove the cooler, and there’s a second set included should you wish to add another fan to the top side of the cooler.

The base plate is mounted directly below the fan and has a thick metal back section which should help further with cooling capabilities. The mounting screws are pre-fitted and sprung too, which should help greatly with the installation process.

There are seven heat pipes in total, all perfectly aligned to give full coverage of the CPU block, although the 7th comes from the thick metal backing on the top of the contact plate, which will help deal with even more heat.

The contact plate is huge and beautifully finished, which should give a fantastic covering over your CPU of choice.

The end of the cooler is nicely finished too, with a soft finish plate and a small Noctua stamp completing the design.

    Cryorig C7 CPU Cooler Review

    Introduction, Specifications, and Pricing

One thing we have found out about Cryorig is that they always seem to be up to something new. From the onset, they have done impressive things, not only for CPU cooler aesthetics, but they also have a knack for getting good performance from coolers you initially would not assume to perform as such. The larger coolers we have seen like the R1 and both of the H series coolers did well. Looking at the other end of the game, however, we also looked at the C1 and the M9i, which are either low profile or very compact in nature. These coolers, while small, still offered us with options we would have no issues with using in their niche environments.

Continuing with compact coolers, Cryorig now offers something, even more, compact. So much so that the overall height has been kept to just 47mm to fit in the tiniest of cases. On top of that, this cooler also offers some of the easiest mounting software found on CPU coolers, and also is designed not to interfere with anything around the CPU. While many coolers such as this have already passed through our labs for testing, if the past is any indication of things to come, we should have a solid 100W TDP cooler that can certainly hold its own with almost any currently offered processor in say a tiny HTPC or internet surfing and email box.

Of course, this cooler will not be for everyone, and is intended to be a stock cooler replacement, yet yielding better results than what the stock solutions do. Along with a cooling boost, also take into consideration that there is no comparison when it comes to noise levels in this latest offering either. In the Cryorig C7, which we are about to cover, near silence even in the hottest of conditions makes the C7 a pleasurable replacement to your ears, and as you will soon read, the Cryorig C7 ships for a very affordable price as well.

The Cryorig C7 will fit into any system supporting the sockets types shown across the top of the specifications chart. This is done with simple yet very effective adjustable mounting pre-installed to fit Intel sockets out of the box, and by changing a screws position and moving the standoff, it easily adapts to AMD sockets. Moving down slightly, we run into a trio of renderings of the C7, and these cover the dimensional aspects of the design, explain that the cooler is 97mm square and stands only 47mm including the fan mounted on top of it.

At the bottom of the chart, to the left side, is where the specifications for the heat sink can be seen. The C7 dimensions are shown again along with the 357 grams of total weight just below it. This design also incorporates four 6mm diameter heat pipes that run through 57 fins that are spaced 1.2mm apart. The base is made from C1100 copper, the pipes are copper as well, and both are plated nickel to fight corrosion. With this design, there are no limitations as to which height memory can be run next to it, and lastly we read that this cooler sports a 100W TDP.

In the bottom right corner of the chart, we then get into fine detail about the included fan that cools the heat sink. Cryorig offers up this 92mm fan that is 15mm thick and accounts for 62 grams of the overall weight. The fan will spin in a range of speed from 600 to 2500 RPM, with a rating of 30dBA for maximum noise level. The fan is also rated to deliver 40.5CFM and 2.8mmH2O of air flow and pressure, respectively.

Searching for this cooler turned up very little via Google. We had actually to search the sites to find listings. Pretty much the top five sites we frequent all offer a listing, and we found that the big two, Amazon and Newegg are both listing the C7 with identical offers currently. Both show the C7 with a $29.99 price tag, and both are offering free shipping in the deal too. As we alluded to earlier, for everything that this cooler promises, you have to look hard to find a way not to justify this minimal cost

SilverStone announces Argon AR07, AR08 heatsinks

SilverStone's Argon family of heatsinks is now two models larger, with the 140mm Argon A07 and 92mm Argon A08.

SilverStone has announced the expansion of its Argon range of air coolers, adding the AR07 and AR08 tower sinks to the family with availability scheduled for early next year.

Launched back in 2013 with the well-received Argon AR01, SilverStone's budget-friendly air cooling range is soon to be two models bigger. The first of the new designs to launch is the AR07, a 453g heatsink featuring three 8mm copper heatpipes drawing heat away from the contact plate and into a reasonable thick stack of aluminium fins designed with a diamond-shaped edge to increase turbulence and heat transfer. Coupoed with a 140mm fan, the company is positioning the part as perfect for all AMD and Intel processors.

For those whose cases won't accept the 140mm x 159mm x 50mm dimensions of the AR07, SilverStone has an alternative in the form of the AR08. Like the AR07, the heatsink includes three copper heatpipes and a patterned aluminium fin stack but drops the overall size to 92mm x 134mm x 50mm for cases with tight clearance. The change in heatsink size, which also drops the fanless weight down to 285, comes with a move to a 92mm fan from the AR07's larger 140mm.

Both heatsinks include mounts for all current Intel and AMD socket types, but SilverStone has yet to release heat dissipation figures for matching each model to appropriately-powerful processors. The heatsinks are expected to launch into the UK channel early next year, with pricing yet to be confirmed.

Enermax Introduces ETS-N30II Air CPU Cooler

Enermax released some impressive cooling solutions over the years and they’re back with one more before New Year’s and introduced the new ETS-N30II side-flow CPU cooler. The new ETS-N30II is the second generation and where the previous model already scored great reviews and rewards around the web, the new one puts one on top with even better efficiency.

Enermax designed the ETS-N30II for use in small and compact systems and it is only 137.2mm high. The tiny CPU cooler comes with perfect RAM compatibility thanks to the asymmetrical heat-pipe design that shifts the whole thing a little to one side. Enermax opted for a 90mm RPM fan and despite the somewhat limited size of everything, the ETS-N30II still comes with a TDP support up to 150W. The three heat-pipes are 6mm thick and the cooler utilizes direct heat-pipe touch for the best cooling abilities.

Enermax applied several of their own patented technologies to bring you the best cooling performance in a compact size. The Vortex Generator Flow is generated by spoilers on the fins that lead the air to the back of the heat pipes too, instead of just hitting the front of them as on most coolers. It also features a closed air path in order to optimize the airflow. It prevents air flow from escaping to the sides before it reaches the entire heatsink.

This second generation ETS-N30 has a 3-degree improvement over the predecessor and it can keep your CPU 22 degrees colder than the stock cooler can do. Enermax also chose to include a fan RPM reduction adapter for those who don’t need as much cooling capability and rather would like a 25% reduction in the noise generation by reducing the speed from 800-2800RPM to 600-1800RPM.

Besides the basic model with a black fan, you’re also able to get the ETS-N30II with Enermax’s Twister Bearing LED fan that has a 160K hours MTBF and zero friction noise. The 12 blue LEDs can give a cool visual bonus to the overall system.

Enermax did not reveal pricing or availability at this time, but pricing should be very similar to the previous ETS-N30 model and availability should be very soon.

The Ninja 4 comes in a nice retail box that has a picture of a Ninja on the front. The front also lets us know the compatibility, which is more or less every modern socket on both AMD and Intel.

Flipping over to the back we have information on support and the warranty.

On one side of the box we have details on some of the main features and technologies used in the cooler.

And on the other side we have a full list of specifications and an overview of dimensions. Good things to know if you have a smaller case or large memory modules.

Opening the box up and getting everything out we have a Ninja 4 CPU cooler, mounting hardware for both Intel and AMD setups, a 120 mm cooling fan, screwdriver, fan clips, Scythe thermal paste, and instructions.

For a full unboxing and overview of the Scythe Ninja 4 be sure to check out our video below.

    Reeven Justice RC-1204 Review

    Reeven Justice RC-1204 Introduction:

Two yerars ago, OCC reviewed the Hans RC-1205 and the Justice RC-1204, so when a couple of Reeven coolers with the same model numbers had arrived at my door, I thought that maybe there had been a mistake. But the boxes looked different, so something has changed, but what? While it is not unusual for a manufacturer to update a product to either freshen it up aesthetically or make some improvements, these changes are usually accompanied with something flashy like "new and improved" or "Version 2.0" on the box. That is not the case with these coolers, as there is no indication of a previous model. I made a quick visit to the website and saw that there is also an RC-1205(n) version, which has exposed copper heat pipes and that is the model I reviewed last year. It will be interesting to see what, if anything, has changed. This review covers the Justice RC-1204, as the Hans RC-1205 was covered in a previous review. The Justice is a bit larger than the Hans, so we will see how the larger size of the Justice affects the performance.
If you haven't heard of Reeven, it is somewhat of a newcomer to the computer component world, having formed in 2009. Since my initial review last year, Reeven has added several coolers, three cases, one new fan, and two fan controllers to its lineup - so things at Reeven seem to be busy. From the Reeven website: "REEVEN is a newly established international manufacturer of PC related products. REEVEN's product lines includes the best quality of advanced CPU coolers, Cooling Fans, Power Supply Units, PC Cases and many other items. the target of our products will be a wide range of audience under our philosophy 'Professional Quality Gears', for products that will withstand the highest demand."
    Reeven Justice RC-1204 Closer Look:

The packaging for the Reeven Justice RC-1204 is fairly simple - an all white box with minimal coloring. All sides of the box are full of information and graphics. The front of the box shows a nice view of the bare cooler with no fan, along with the Intel and AMD socket coverage. You can see the six heat pipes spilling out from the bottom. Across the top of the box is the REEVEN logo and a brief listing of the features.

A better view of the front of the box shows the bare cooler (fan not attached) with the REEVEN logo on the top cover plate. The termination points of the heat pipes are decoratively capped off at the four corners. The rear of the box has a nice list of the specifications and some illustrations showing the basic dimensional information.
The sides show a nice shot of the cooler with the fan attached and three features listed: Easy to Use, Ø6mm x 6 Heat Pipes, and Dual Fans Attachable (it comes with one fan and clips if you want to add a second fan). Then we have a list of cautions that are (or at least should be) common sense. Don't let the kids play with it, don't use it on your lawn mower - well, seriously - safety first, right?
When the box is opened, first you see the hardware box on top. After you get the hardware box out of the way, then you can see the cooler. The general packaging seems minimal, but effective, and there is a foam pad at the bottom to protect the base of the cooler. The fan comes attached, so when you pull the cooler out of the box, the fan comes with it.
The hardware consists of mounting components for both AMD and Intel installations. The yellow fan clips look interesting and I am glad to seem them carried over from the model I reviewed last year. I really like those plastic clips much more than the standard metal wire clips. The thermal paste is in a clear plastic pouch rather than a syringe-style dispensing tube, and you also get a little wrench to assist with the assembly.
The instruction sheet is well illustrated with a full parts list, and is laid out with easy-to-follow assembly and installation steps.

Noctua NH-D9L Dual-Tower CPU Cooler Review

    Introduction

Notcua, the PC cooling markets masters of sublime build quality and ultra-quiet performance, are back on eTeknix once again today. I’ll be taking a look at their new NH-D9L cooler, and while it may seem a little small and not particularly special, it’s certainly got a few promising features that I’m looking forward to testing.
Despite the compact design, measuring just 111mm tall! The D9L features a dual tower design, yet still provides perfect clearance for RAM modules, as well as keeping clear of any PCIe expansion cards. It’s small enough to fit in a mini-ITX system build, but for the more professional hardware enthusiast, it’ll be perfect for 3U systems too. Noctua build quality is world-famous, and to support their confidence, the D9L comes with a whopping six-year warranty! That’s confidence in their products right there.
“The included NF-A9 premium fan supports automatic speed control via PWM for outstanding quietness of operation and a second, optional NF-A9 fan can be added for further improved performance in dual fan mode. Topped off with the trusted, pro-grade SecuFirm2™ multi-socket mounting system, Noctua’s proven NT-H1 thermal compound and full 6 years manufacturer’s warranty, the NH-D9L forms a highly compact premium package for space-restricted applications.”
For a quick overview of the coolers features and design, check out this lovely product video from Noctua.

Equipped with support for all major sockets and then some, as well as a form factor that will support a vast amount of system and motherboard configurations, including some server deployments, high-quality build materials and a premium grade fan, this little cooler is already starting to sound quite exciting.

The box is typical Noctua, nicely designed, with a brown and white colour scheme, and technical/performance data plastered on every side of the box.
The box is nicely packaged, with lots of protection around the cooler and a separate box for additional components.

In the component box, you’ll find everything you need to get the cooler installed on all major Intel and AMD socket types. There’s a tube of high-quality thermal paste, extra fan clips and even a screwdriver, which are certainly welcome additions.

AMD is so proud of its stock cooler that it is demoing it

Wraith might make only a spectral appearance
Most stock CPU coolers are junked when the chip is delivered and replaced with something which is a little more sexy and does not sound like a B52 taking off.

Odd really as most people don’t overclock so spending a fortune on an expensive cooler is not that important.
Now AMD has just shown off its Wraith cooler which looks like the days of the dull stock cooler are a thing of the past.
For a start it is a lot bigger and has a much larger fan spinning consistently at a lower speed. This makes it quieter than its predecessor and it does not switch on and off all the time.
Sadly we are not sure which chips will get the Wrath. IT is rated for 125W, and AMD says that high-end FX chips that suck more energy than that were primarily designed for use with water-cooling systems rather than stock coolers.
So the name "wraith" might be because it is rarely seen and only by those who no sane people would believe.
    Here it is in action
