Final 'Hobbit' film comes to the small screen next month

The final entry in Peter Jackson's 'The Hobbit' trilogy 'The Battle of the Five Armies' might have disappointed a few fans mirrored in our own review, but that didn't stop the film from grossing nearly $1b at the worldwide box office and $3b for the entire series - an astonishing amount of money by any metric.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment have now announced the upcoming home media release of the film to be released on March 24th in the United States and March 26th in Australia. Coming in four flavours - a Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack, Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and Digital, the Blu-ray is promising a number of behind the scenes featurettes including: Recruiting the Five Armies, Completing Middle-earth, The Last Goodbye: Behind the Scenes, The Last Goodbye music video and New Zealand: Home of Middle-earth, Part 3 along with an UltraViolet copy of the feature.

For those that want to hang on for a bit more 'Hobbit' action, it's expected that an extended cut of the film will be released sometime in the fourth quarter.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales has officially began production and Walt Disney Studios has released a plot synopsis for the film.

New Alien movie incoming from District 9 director

If the recent success of Alien: Isolation has taught us anything, it’s that despite the abortive efforts of the Aliens vs Predator movies and the Promethius film, people still love the Alien franchise; but more so for its roots than its branches. Fortunately then, it looks like we might get a less action orientated sequel in the series, with District 9 director Neill Blomkamp at the helm.
The difficulty comes with when the movie will be set in the Alien timeline. It’s said that the film will take place sometime after Prometheus 2 (via Cinemablend), which depending on the time-lapse between the first and second movies, could place the film a little before the original Alien movie, or much later, since “after,” doesn’t really lock it down to any particular part of the timeline.

Blomkamp previously posted this unofficial concept art months before announcing his directorship
Blomkamp however has stated a strong desire to work with Sigourney Weaver on the project, potentially reprising her role as Ellen Ripley. However, unless age reduction technology was used to alter her appearance, the movie would need to be set far after the original Alien to make much sense. In reality, considering the amount of time she spent in hyper sleep, it would be difficult to imagine her fitting into anything outside of the events already established.

Hey look, it’s what Alien 3 should have been
This is why some are wondering whether the least liked movies in the (main) Alien franchise, three and Resurrection, may be cut out and an alternate timeline created. It certainly would be interesting to see Hicks survive alongside Newt and Ripley.
Ridley Scott’s only involvement with the project will be the capacity of a producer. He is still expected to direct the Prometheus sequel.

Movies nominated for an Oscar see surge in Internet piracy

Following news of which films are up for Oscars, online piracy of nominated movies increased 385 percent since January 15, according to the Irdeto piracy monitoring firm.

Irdeto uses a crawler to monitor torrent downloads, and saw increased interest following the Oscar nominations - largely due to increased media coverage - with screener films sometimes leaked online.

"Hollywood screeners specifically accounted for a substantial 31 percent of the total illegal downloads tracked between January 15 and February 14," according to Irdeto, as published by TorrentFreak. "Six nominated movies currently unavailable for retail purchase on Blu-ray, DVD, VOD or legal streaming/download sites saw the majority of piracy coming directly from these screeners: American Sniper, The Imitation Game, Wild, Selma, Whiplash and Still Alice."

Irdeto confirmed that each download doesn't correlate with a lost movie rental or purchase, but will harm movies because they may not be classified as a "blockbuster." To counter online piracy, studios should consider using custom release windows when movies are released, and then available for rentals and purchases.

'Pirates 5' begins filming as powerful cyclone threatens Gold Coast

Following the agreement struck between the Government of Australia and Walt Disney Company last year to film the fifth entry in the 'Pirates of the Carribbean' franchise at the Warner Bros. Movie World Gold Coast studio, cameras begun rolling earlier this week, but a tropical cyclone now threatens to disrupt proceedings.

Cameras begun rolling earlier this week after Johnny Depp, who reprises his role as Captain Jack Sparrow flew into the location and Producer Jerry Bruckheimer took to Twitter to share the first day's shoot.

We just started filming a new #PiratesoftheCaribbean in Australia. Captain Jack is back.

A spokesperson for production told The Age Newspaper that while they hoped the weather wouldn't be as bad as predicted, contingencies were in place and filming would continue, before Cyclone Marcia strengthened to category five earlier this morning, making it one of the three most powerful cyclones to hit the Queensland coast in the past century.

Fifth 'Alien' film greenlit by 20th Century Fox

Early last month, 'District 9' and 'Elysium' director Neil Blomkamp posted some interesting concept art for a potential fifth 'Alien' film to his Instagram account, along with the caption "Was working on this. Don't think I am anymore. Love it though. #alien #xenomorph" But whilst on the publicity trail for his latest picture 'Chappie', Director Neil Blomkamp has confirmed he has signed on to direct the film after all, tweeting out a piece of H.R. Giger artwork with the caption "Um... So I think it's officially my next film. #alien"

Whilst studio Twentieth Century Fox has not yet made an official announcement, Deadline Hollywood has revealed that Ridley Scott, who directed the first 'Alien' picture in 1979 will produce and assist with the script, which interestingly will be set after the forthcoming sequel to 'Prometheus'.

Blomkamp's 'Chappie', which is released next month, stars Sigourney Weaver who allegedly sparked his interest in the 'Alien' project, so its seems a safe bet that the next film will finally give her the character the closure that's been sorely needed since 1997's 'Alien: Resurrection'.

Is a New ‘Back to The Future’ on the Way?

    Made with Flare More Info'>
Universal Pictures posted a cryptic tweet on Wednesday that has left many Back to The Future fans giddy with excitement. “The Future is Coming” it says, leading many to wonder whether a new movie could be on the horizon.

    The future is coming. #BTTF2015

Well, it is 2015 – the actual future according to second movie in the series. So could it really mean that Marty McFly is back? Maybe. While it could be a whole new movie, it’s unlikely they would have been able to keep it under wraps so soon before the crucial date of October 2015.

So what could it be? Maybe a short film or a TV special perhaps? Or maybe it’s just an event to celebrate the arrival of ‘the future’? Who knows.
If we could get in the DeLorean and find out right now, we would, but it seems that we’ll just have to wait and see.

Professor Stephen Hawking congratulates 'Theory of Everything' star

Whilst it was no surprise that the Academy honoured 2014 drama 'Birdman' with the Best Picture Academy Award, it was a surprise that star Michael Keaton was overlooked, in favour of rising British star Eddie Redmayne's portrayal of Professor Stephen Hawking in 'The Theory of Everything'.

Whilst Hawking wasn't at the ceremony in person, he has sent his well wishes via his Facebook page, writing "Congratulations to Eddie Redmayne for winning an ‪#‎Oscar‬ for playing me in The Theory of Everything Movie. Well done Eddie, I'm very proud of you." High praise indeed from one of the smartest men on the planet.

'The Theory of Everything' is currently certified fresh by Rotten Tomatoes, with a 79% aggregate.

Schwarzenegger will be back for 'Terminator 6'

The next installment in the 'Terminator' saga 'Genisys' is still a few months away, but Paramount Pictures is moving quickly to produce a new trilogy of films in the long running franchise before the rights revert to series creator James Cameron in 2018, where it will likely be retired forever.

TheArnoldFans asked star Arnold Schwarzenegger if he would return for the next film; the as yet untitled 'Terminator 6' to which replied "Yes, of course, next year". It isn't currently known if he will return for the seventh and final film, although I'd be willing to put money on it - even if he will be 70 years old by the time it comes around.

'Terminator: Genisys' hits screens worldwide on July 1st and for the first time in 3D, helmed by 'Thor: The Dark World' director Alan Taylor.
