Google Patches Serious Flaws in Chrome 49

Google has once again updated the Windows, Mac and Linux versions of Chrome 49 in order to patch several vulnerabilities, including high-risk issues for which researchers got paid thousands of dollars.
Chrome 49.0.2623.108 resolves a total of five vulnerabilities, four of which have been identified and reported by external researchers.
Two of the issues, credited to “anonymous,” have been described as high severity use-after-free vulnerabilities in Navigation (CVE-2016-1647) and Extensions (CVE-2016-1648). The researcher or researchers who reported the flaws to Google have been awarded $5,500 and $5,000, respectively.
Another high severity vulnerability is an out-of-bounds read in the V8 JavaScript engine (CVE-2016-1646) for which Wen Xu from Tencent KeenLab earned $7,500.
At the recent Pwn2Own 2016 competition, JungHoon Lee (lokihardt) attempted to demonstrate a code execution exploit against Chrome. The attempt failed, but it appears the researcher identified a high severity buffer overflow in libANGLE (CVE-2016-1649). Google’s advisory credits Lee for finding the flaw, but the amount of money he will get for it has not been determined.
The latest Chrome update also patches multiple vulnerabilities found by Google’s own security team.
When it released Chrome 49 in early March, Google announced patching a total of 26 security issues affecting previous versions. An update released roughly one week later patched an additional three high severity issues.
Last month, an anonymous researcher earned over $25,000 for reporting same-origin bypass and Chrome sandbox escape bugs, and Google is prepared to give out even higher amounts for vulnerabilities found in its products. The company announced recently that it’s prepared to give $100,000 to anyone who can achieve a persistent compromise of a Chromebox or Chromebook in guest mode via a web page.
In addition, the Chrome Reward Program has been expanded to include Safe Browsing download protection bypass vulnerabilities, which are worth up to $1,000.

Signal Desktop Beta Now Available To All

Signal, the state-of-the-art open source encryption app for mobile, came to the desktop late last year, but only through an invitation system. The desktop app (which is still in beta) is now available for anyone who wants to download it from the Chrome web store.
Whatsapp and its billion users recently started enjoying the same kind of encryption that Signal uses: end-to-end, with messages encrypted between users and without allowing the company hosting the servers to look inside that encryption (especially if the users verify themselves with security codes).
However, users still have to trust Whatsapp, to some degree, that it won’t change or backdoor that encryption surreptitiously. For those who would rather not trust a closed-source application from Facebook, and would rather trust a group of developers that have a strong track record of speaking out against mass surveillance and developing apps with strong cryptography, Signal is still the better choice. It doesn’t have nearly as large of a user base as Whatsapp, but it has been growing steadily lately.
Open Whisper Systems launched a private beta version of its Signal Desktop app for Chrome in December last year. It initially required an invitation, which may have actually hurt its adoption at the time.
However, the private beta also allowed the team behind it to get valuable feedback from people who really wanted to use the app. The non-profit organization said the desktop app been refined since it launched to improve its look and feel.
Users can chat either one-on-one or in a group, knowing that their messages are always end-to-end encrypted by default. They can also send attachments with photos or videos. However, unlike the mobile apps, it doesn’t yet have a calling ability. Video is also still lacking from both the mobile and the desktop applications, which means it won’t be a full Skype or Hangouts replacement until that changes.
Voice and video calling is likely harder to do securely in a browser, which may be why Open Whisper Systems hasn’t implemented them yet, and why the group may take its time to get them right. As an open source non-profit group, its priorities aren’t necessarily new features that it can promote to users, but the absolute security of the features that the group does decide to implement.

Chrome 50 improves push notifications, drops support for legacy Windows and OS X operating systems

Version 50 of Google’s popular Chrome web browser was recently promoted to the stable channel for Windows, Linux and Mac. The latest iteration is noteworthy for the simple fact that what’s been taken away is arguably more important than the new features it delivers.
If you recall, Google announced back in November that it would be ending support for older operating systems in April 2016. Keeping its promise, Chrome 50 no longer supports Windows XP, Windows Vista, OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, OS X 10.7 Lion and OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
It’s worth noting that Chrome will still work on these older operating systems but they’ll no longer receive updates and security fixes. Google said the decision to drop support for older operating systems had to do with the fact that Apple and Microsoft no longer support them, either.
That leaves legacy users with a few different options moving forward. The obvious answer is to upgrade to a newer operating system. Microsoft ended extended support for Windows XP in April 2014 with plans to do the same for Vista next April. Apple’s older operating systems are no longer officially supported, either.
Elsewhere, Chrome 50 includes push notification enhancements, the ability for content creators to detect when a notification has been dismissed or how it is handed (alerted by an audio tone or vibration, for example) and faster page load times, just to name a few.
Chrome 50 also includes the usual mix of low, medium and high risk security fixes (20 total) discovered both internally and through the help of independent security researchers via the Chrome bug bounty program.
Current Chrome users on supported browsers should automatically be updated to the newest version. If not (or if you’re new to Chrome), you can download it by clicking here.

Se esta ideia da Google for para avançar, vai ser muito mau. Pelos vistos, isto não vai afectar apenas o Chrome, mas também todos os browsers que usam o motor Chromium...
Google is proposing a move that would kill most ad-blockers in Chrome

A Google está a tornar-se mais perigosa que a Microsoft dos anos 90. Alguém tem de levar esta empresa ao supremo tribunal e dividir a empresa em várias.
