Notorious Ransomware KeRanger Infects OS X; Effects To Start Surfacing Tomorrow

As technology and gadgets become an increasing part of our lives, users continue to cede over control to devices and software. Apple, known for its closed systems, has always in particular provided security as one of the primary reasons behind its unorthodox ways; a fact that’s become even more pervasive over the course of the company’s legal tussle against the FBI. So when news surfaces of the Cupertino tech giant’s operating systems being breached, it causes more of an uproar as compared to others.

First Fully Functional OS X Ransomware Detected Through BitTorrent Client

When it comes to Ransomwares, KeRanger has proved itself to be quite notorious. Its managed to extract thousands of dollars through ransoms from various institutions will now also be able to lock down machines running Apple’s OS X. It’s the first time any Ransomware capable of doing so has been detected, according to folks over at Palo Alto networks, and the software could start encrypting machines from tomorrow morning.
KeRanger was detected on Transmission 2.90, a bit torrent client for OS X users. Since it had been signed through a valid Mac app development certificate, it managed to bypass Apple’s Gatekeeper Protection and install itself on machines. Even though the 2.90 update has since been removed and replaced with 2.91 on Transmission’s website, the ransomware starts its encryption three days after installation.
Another interesting fact is that, according to sources, users who updated their torrent client over the air have managed to stay in the clear, with the only users who have been affected being those who downloaded the updated directly from Transmission’s servers.

Once the ransomware starts encryption, it starts to communicate with C2 servers over the Tor network and after encryption, demands 1 bitcoin in Ransom from the affected user. Another interesting fact is that the software isn’t in its final version as of now, but is still under development. Some additions that we might see in the future include the ability to encrypt backup files as well, making things even more complicated.
As far as Apple’s reaction goes, a company representative speaking to Reuters claims that Apple has revoked the faulty developer certificate behind the breach and has also updated its XProtect antivirus signature. So if you’ve visited Transmission recently and are an OS X users, head over to the link at the bottom to find out if your machine has been compromised. Thoughts? Let us know what you think in the comments section and stay tuned for the latest.

How To Turn Off OS X System Sounds

Here’s how you can turn off Mac OS X system sounds completely and make everything silent for good.

Apple takes a bunch of decisions in the background to make sure that the user experience is top notch as possible when it comes to using its product on a day to day basis. For instance, on the iPhone and iPad, whenever you click on the power button, the wallpaper slightly animates towards the user giving a sense of waking up something. And such things are all over the place, even the Mac.
However, there are certain things which are bound to enhance the user experience, while at the same time, could prove to be prominently annoying in certain instances. We’re of course, talking about the system sounds in OS X, which, while might prove to be a godsend for giving us audible feedback, but can be annoying to the nth degree if they pop up at unwanted times, especially when you’re hard at work churning out some serious productivity.
In today’s guide, we’ll walk you through the process of turning the system sounds completely off in a few easy steps. And no, we’re not talking about hitting the ‘Mute’ button on the keyboard.
Turn Off All Mac OS X System Sounds – Tutorial

    1. Open System Preferences on the Mac.
    2. Look for an option called ‘Sound’ and then click on it.

    Advertisements

    3. Click on the ‘Sound Effect’ tab at the top.
    4. See those two options labeled ‘Play user interface sound effects’ and ‘Play feedback when volume is changed?’ Click to uncheck them.

That’s it, you’re done. From here on in OS X won’t play a single system sound no matter what you do. But of course, if you play a media file through QuickTime, iTunes, VLC etc. then everything will be audible.
If you want to silence everything for good, then don’t hesitate to hit that ‘Mute’ button on the Mac keyboard. But we recommend that you stick to the above steps to dawn silence on your workspace while keeping important things audible.
If you want everything back to the way it was, then simply follow the above guide again and check the last two boxes in the concluding step. Nice and easy.
While system sounds are great and all, but we will go against them when we’re deep into productivity mode, with every pop and click sound could prove to be a roadblock in ways unimaginable.

Clear Messages History And Attachments In Mac OS X – How To Guide

Here’s how you can delete (clear history) all messages and attachments from Messages app in one go on Mac OS X.

Ever since Apple brought the Messages app to the Mac, the routine of sending instant messaging between iOS and OS X users have exploded, with people making use of the app / service on a daily basis. But as we keep on sending those messages, we are bound to pile up junk in the Messages app which can be cumbersome to get rid off, especially if you’re a serial chatterbox. But fear not, we’re here to help, and will show you in a simple guide today how you can delete every single message thread (clear history) in the OS X Messages app in one go, and also delete attachments, such as images and videos, subsequently freeing up space on your Mac.
All set? Let’s dive right into it!
Clear Messages App History And Delete Attachments In Mac OS X

There are two routes you can take to delete all messages and attachments in the Messages app. But we’ll only be talking about the simplest one that involves copying a command string and pasting it in Terminal.
    1. Open Spotlight or Launchpad and launch the ‘Terminal’ app.
    2. Copy this command string by highlighting it:
    rm -r ~/Library/Messages/chat.*
The above command will erase all messages history in the Messages app.
    3. Paste it in Terminal and hit the ‘Return’ key on your keyboard.

    4. Now copy this command string and paste it in Terminal as well, then hit the ‘Return’ key:
    rm -r ~/Library/Messages/Attachments/??
The above command will erase all attachments from the Messages app.

Once done, we recommend that you give your Mac a restart and then launch the Messages app. You’ll be presented with a fresh sight which looks a lot like this:

With the Messages app history all cleared up, you are set to start all fresh without having to go through the trouble of deleting every single thread individually. And since you’ve deleted attachments as well, this means that you’ve managed to free up a handful of space on your Mac. This is extremely handy if you happen to have a base model Mac with a small storage medium, such as a 128GB MacBook Air.
If you found the above guide useful, then be sure to let us know about it in the comments section below.

KeRanger Mac Ransomware Flaw May Allow Recovery of Files

A few days ago, KeRanger, the first Mac ransomware found in the wild was discovered. Now, according to researchers from antivirus firm Bitdefender, KeRanger turned out to be based on a previous piece of ransomware known as Linux.Encoder, which emerged late last year, targeting Linux-based web servers.
The advantage to this is that Linux.Encoder possessed flaws in its cryptographic implementation for at least the first three versions, which allowed Bitdefender’s researchers to develop tools that could decrypt the files affected by the malware. According to Bogdan Botezatu, senior e-threat analyst at Bitdefender, even the latest version of Linux.Encoder (4), has the same flaws that affected the previous versions.
“The infected Mac OS X torrent client update analyzed by Bitdefender Labs looks virtually identical to version 4 of the Linux.Encoder Trojan that has been infecting thousands of Linux servers since the beginning of 2016,” Bitdefender researchers stated in a blog post published on Tuesday. The result of this is that KeRanger also contains the same broken cryptographic implementation.
Bitdefender is yet to publish a tool able to decrypt KeRanger affected files, however, development of such a tool is under consideration, should the demand be sufficient.
The purpose behind KeRanger still remains to be seen, considering the great lengths that those responsible for it have gone to, including stealing a legitimate Apple developer’s certificate and hacking into a popular and trusted open source project’s website, if the ransomware they were distributing had such a crucial known weakness. Whether a newer, more dangerous version of KeRanger will appear in the future could be quite likely, however, those affected by its current iteration should be thankful that this incident was not more serious.

Show Keyboard Emoji & Symbols Entry In Mac Menu Bar – How To

Here’s how you can set OS X to show keyboard emoji and symbols entry option in the Mac menu bar.

Deny it all you want but all of us have started to use emoji and special characters way more than ever before, and the credit goes to the boom of the IM culture, if you’re a person who opts to call it that. While emoji characters are all well and good when it comes to mobile, but it can be a bit of pain to utilize especially if you’re a desktop user. But worry not, we’re here to help and will hopefully give your emoji game a big boost by the time you’re done reading this, by enabling an emoji and symbols option in the Mac menu bar, giving you easy access to all emoji and special symbols all the time no matter where you are in OS X.
Step Up Your Emoji Game In Mac OS X With A Dedicated Entry In The Menu Bar

    1. Launch System Preferences. You can do so by clicking on the ‘Apple’ logo in the Mac menu bar at the top, then clicking ‘System Preferences.’

    2. In the list of available options, click on the one that says ‘Keyboard.’

    3. Under the ‘Keyboard’ tab, click on the ‘Show Keyboard, Emoji & Symbol Viewers in menu bar’ option.

    Advertisements

    4. In the menu bar, you’ll now see a new icon. Click on it.
    5. Now click on ‘Show Emoji & Symbols.’

    6. Select your favorite emoji and type away like a pro!

Alternatively, you can access the emoji characters option by pressing Command+Control+Spacebar on your Mac’s keyboard. But be sure to select a text box first before hitting that key combination. And the biggest drawback of this option is that the emoji box disappears as soon as you select a character from it.
This is a really handy little feature to know about, especially if you interact on social networks a lot. Furthermore, unlike the emoji keyboard on iOS, the Mac version will show you in detail what a particular emoji implies. For example, in the above screenshot you can see that the usual smiley face that we use is called a ‘Grinning face,’ and you also get font variations for a select emoji as well, which is absolutely neat if you’re asking us.
If you found today’s guide useful, then be sure to drop a comment in the section below. We’ll be back with more how-to guides in the near future as well, so stay tuned to our coverage!

Less than half of developers expected to use Windows by next year

Programmer community site Stack Overflow's new survey sees OS X overshadowing Linux again this year as the more popular operating system among developers. Although Windows still leads the pack (currently at 52.2%, including the different versions), it's expected to continue trending downward, below 50% by this time next year.

The survey -- which covers many topics -- is based on answers from more than 56,003 developers among 173 countries, which is said to make it the "most comprehensive developer survey ever conducted." Stack Overflow notes the survey is inherently biased against developers who don't speak English, at least not as their native tongue.
