Matrox vai usar GPUs da AMD

Eu ainda sou do tempo em que a Matrox era uma das companhias a bater-se a sério no mercado de placas gráficas. Mas já faz mais de uma década que a Matrox se limita a um nicho de mercado profissional, que se torna cada vez menor.
Pode ser que agora consigam fazer algo interessante com um GPU potente.
Matrox Creates Professional Graphics Cards with AMD GPUs

Matrox, along with S3, develop GPU ASICs for use with desktop add-in boards, alongside AMD and NVIDIA. Last year, they sold less than 7000 units in their quarter according to my math (rounding to 0.0% market share implies < 0.05% of total market, which was 7000 units that quarter). Today, Matrox Graphics Inc. announce that they will use an AMD GPU on their upcoming product line.

While they do not mention a specific processor, they note that "the selected AMD GPU" will be manufactured at a 28nm process with 1.5 billion transistors. It will support DirectX 11.2, OpenGL 4.4, and OpenCL 1.2. It will have a 128-bit memory bus.
Basically, it kind-of has to be Cape Verde XT (or XT GL) unless it is a new, unannounced GPU.
If it is Cape Verde XT, it would have about 1.0 to 1.2 TFLOPs of single precision performance (depending on the chosen clock rate). Whatever clock rate is chosen, the chip contains 640 shader processors. It was first released in February 2012 with the Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition. Again, this is assuming that AMD will not release a GPU refresh for that category.
Matrox will provide their PowerDesk software to configure multiple monitors. It will work alongside AMD's professional graphics drivers. It is a sad that to see a GPU ASIC manufacturer throw in the towel, at least temporarily, but hopefully they can use AMD's technology to remain in the business with competitive products. Who knows: maybe they will make a return when future graphics APIs reduce the burden of driver and product development?

Pena foi que eles abandonaram para se dedicar aos mercados mais profissionais.
Além do mais as placas Matrox eram também sinal de preço elevado e qualidade assegurada.
Ainda me passaram pelas mãos algumas das melhores placas Matrox do antigamente, placas essas que eram desejadas por muitos graças à performance e excelente qualidade de imagem.

Nunca tive uma gráfica da Matrox, mas lembro-me de quando comprei uma TNT 2 Ultra e pouco depois sai a G400.
Não só tinha melhor desempenho, mas também tinha bem melhor qualidade de imagem. O seu problema eram as drivers.....sim, já nesta altura a nVidia era conhecida por fazer as melhores drivers gráficas.

Nada batia as Matrox em qualidade de imagem, era o melhor que havia na altura.
Ainda tenho um amigo meu que faz edição de uns filmes e tem um pc com uma Matrox G440 e aquilo em qualidade de imagem, mesmo nos de dias hoje continua a ser muito bom.

Matrox Quad and Six-Head PCI Express Graphics Cards

Matrox Graphics Inc. today announced the first two cards in the eagerly anticipated Matrox C-Series - the Matrox C420 quad-output and the Matrox C680 six-output PCI Express graphics cards - engineered for stability, reliability and advanced multi-display capabilities. Both cards feature 2 GB of on-board memory and mini DisplayPort connectivity.
They deliver outstanding performance for control room, digital signage, enterprise, industrial, security, A/V, and embedded system applications.

The low-profile Matrox C420 quad card features passive cooling for increased reliability and silent operation. Its low power consumption makes it a perfect fit for small-form-factor and embedded systems. The single-slot Matrox C680 supports up to six displays or projectors. Compatibility with the latest Ultra-HD and 4K panels makes C680 a versatile solution for multi-screen workstation setups. More displays can be supported by inserting two C680 cards into a system. The board-to-board framelock feature ensures synchronization of all displays to reduce tearing on digital signage and video walls.
Both new video cards work with the robust Matrox PowerDesk desktop management software for Windows that lets users easily configure and manage multi-display setups. PowerDesk gives professionals a comprehensive set of tools to control a variety of display configurations including stretched or independent desktops, clone mode, pivot, bezel management, and edge overlap. Matrox advanced desktop management features also let users determine where and how program windows are displayed on the desktop - a productivity tool designed to enhance multi-display experiences.

Key features of Matrox C-Series
Matrox C-Series PCI Express x16 graphics cards are designed with AMD GPUs featuring DirectX 11.2, OpenGL 4.4 and OpenCL 1.2 compliance. Secure mini DisplayPort connectors prevent loose cabling. The low-profile Matrox C420 supports up to four displays with a maximum resolution of 2560 x 1600. Matrox C680 supports up to six displays with a maximum resolution of 4096 x 2160. Bundled with Matrox PowerDesk for Windows, Matrox C-Series is compatible with Microsoft Windows 7, 8.1 and Linux operating systems.

Eu tive 2 Matrox no passado...

A Millennium e a Mystique... Sendo que a primeira era mais orientada para trabalho com o ramdac mais avançado e qualidade de imagem excelente.
A Mystique era mais orientada para jogos, mantendo a qualidade de imagem que a Matrox era reconhecida, mas não conseguia bater as 3DFX, NVIDIAS e até as S3 que cada vez estavam melhores (tive uma Savage 2000).

A few months ago we heard about the now-niche company Matrox collaborating with AMD to release a new lineup of professional GPUs. To the old tech enthusiasts this news had a very subtle ring of irony in it along with the usual news value because of the fact that Matrox at one point in time used to compete with AMD on the same turf its now renting land from. The details seem to have been finalized because Matrox just launched its new lineup of GPUs featuring AMD’s Cape Verde core.

Back in the golden age, Matrox was a high-end 2d graphics company right there with our lovable red-green duo and the legendary 3dfx. Notably, it released the Matrox Millennium GPUs that could be considered the ‘Titans’ of the 1990s. However with the revolution of the 3d Graphics, Matrox started lagging behind its rival siblings. It decided to quit and focus only on niche markets leaving 3dfx, Nvidia and AMD alone in the ring. It is because of this reason that the original news that Matrox is using the cores of its old rival was quite interesting to some. Matrox has now officially launched the new generation of AMD powered GPUs which to my knowledge consists only of the Matrox C420 LP and C680 (with multiple output variations). The cards will support 4 and 6 display screens respectively and be priced at 450 and 540 euros each (yikes thats alot).

Aí temos os primeiros Gpu´s da AMD a equipar a Matrox.
Não esperava voltar a ver o Cape Verde numa linha de graficas, acho que fazia mais sentido optar para esta linha de graficas pelo chip que veio substituio o Cape Verde, o Banaire.
Espero que a Matrox tenha sucesso com estes chips, pois a Matrox no passado já foi provavelmente a melhor empresa a colocar uma grafica no mercado.

Está gráfica vai ser pouco mais do que um super interface para multi monitores.
Diga-se que 6 monitores a 4k representa muito pixel a passar entre a gráfica e o monitor.
Isto significa que o interface é muito diferente de tudo o que temos como padrão no mercado actual. Daí o preço.

Matrox C900 graphics card drives nine displays from a single slot

Super-fast gaming graphics cards are all well and good. Sometimes, though, what one really needs is an absurd amount of display area to keep an eye on stock prices, monitor an entire power station, or perhaps even get a good look at one of TR's frametime Excel sheets. Enter the Matrox C900.

Matrox says the C900 is the world's first nine-output single-slot graphics card. Although the card may not look like much from the top down, its business end is far more interesting. This card has nine mini-HDMI 1.4 outputs, which can drive an equal number of monitors at a maximum resolution of 1920x1200 per unit at 60Hz.
Those monitors can be arranged in configurations like a 9x1 strip or a 3x3 wall. The card's frame locking will ensure all displays are kept in sync, so viewers won't happen to see Greedo shooting before Han.
An unspecified AMD GPU powers the card along with 4GB of RAM. It supports OpenGL ES 4.4 and DirectX 12. The C900 comes with a PCIe 3.0 x16 interface, and since its power consumption is under 75W, there's no need for a PCIe power connector. Matrox says users can expand their video walls even further by daisy-chaining another C900 card or a C680 instead. The bundled software includes bezel and overlap configuration, as well as EDID management.
The Matrox C900 will be available sometime during Q2 2016. There's no word on pricing, but given that the six-output C680 sells for $635, you can expect the C900's price sticker to be a bit larger.

In the past, the market for gaming oriented GPUs was more than just a two-horse race between ATI/AMD and Nvidia, with many other brands competing for attention like Voodoo and Matrox. Today most of these brands are dead, but Matrox is still alive and well, though we do not expect them to be re-entering the gaming market anytime soon.

Matrox has released their new C900 GPU, which uses an unspecified AMD GPU core and 4GB of VRAM to power up to nine 1920x1200 displays at 60Hz, making this GPU perfect for the digital signage market. Earlier this month the Matrox C-series of GPUs won an AV Award for Digital Signage Product of the year, showcasing how much famous the Matrox brand still is.


While Matrox's C900 does support DirectX 12, it is by no means a gaming oriented GPU, simply put it is an AMD GPU core design that has been used for a low power graphics solution for commercial applications where a large number of displays need to be used at once.
