    Tech Primer: What you need to know about DDR4 memory


    Most computer technologies only last a short time before they are replaced by something new, but DDR RAM is one of the few that tends to last a while before being replaced. The original DDR SDRAM was launched in 2000 and lasted three years before being replaced in 2003 by DDR2 SDRAM.
    DDR2 lasted another four years before being replaced in 2007 with DDR3 SDRAM. Since then, it has been seven years without a new revision of DDR RAM, but DDR4 has finally been launched to replace DDR3 SDRAM.

    What's new in DDR4?

    From a physical standpoint, DDR4 is the same width as DDR3, but is slightly taller by about .9mm. The main physical difference between DDR3 and DDR4 is that DDR4 uses 288 pins compared to the 240 pins on DDR3 and the key is in a different location.
    In addition, the pins on DDR4 are not in a straight line but slightly curved with the middle sticking out further than the pins on the end.
    Though there are ton of changes, the four major improvements of DDR4 SDRAM can be summed up in lower operating voltage, increased power saving enhancements, increased frequency, and improved chip density.
    DDR3 RAM natively runs at 1.5V with low power modules running at 1.35V. Some manufacturers go outside of this, of course, but the majority of DDR3 RAM runs at this voltage. DDR4, however, natively runs at 1.2V with low power modules expected to run at just 1.05V. In addition, DDR4 supports a number of power saving enhancements including a new deep power-down mode to reduce power consumption when the system is in standby.
    The lower operating voltage and power enhancements allows DDR4 RAM to draw less power (and consequently run cooler) than DDR3 RAM.

    In terms of performance, DDR4 RAM will start at 2133MHz (which is roughly the upper limit for DDR3) and is expected to eventually reach speeds as high as 3200MHz. DDR4 chips are also able to be manufactured in densities of up to 16Gb (or 2GB) per chip, which is double the density of DDR3. This means that we should start seeing consumer-grade DDR4 RAM in capacities of 16GB per stick and possibly as large as 64GB per stick for server-grade memory.

    Samsung begin production of the first 8-Gigabit LPDDR4 Mobile DRAM

    As according to their newly issued press release, Samsung announced today that mass production has begun for the industry's first 8 gigabit low power double data rate 4 (LPDDR4) mobile DRAM.


    This technology is claimed to be based on their 20-nm process technology, stating that LPDDR memory is generally used as 'working memory' for mobile devices around the globe.

    Samsung's Executive Vice President of Memory Sales and Marketing is excited given this news, comenting that "by initiating production of 20nm 8Gb LPDDR4, which is even faster than the DRAM for PCs and servers and consumes much less energy, we are contributing to the timely launch of UHD, large-screen flagship mobile devices," further adding "as this major advancement in mobile memory demonstrates, we will continue to closely collaborate with global mobile device manufacturers to optimize DRAM solutions, making them suitable for next-generation mobile OS environments."

    This new technology is claimed to offer twice the performance and density when compared to 4gb LPDDR3. Providing an I/O data rate of up to 3,200 Mbps, this new DRAM advancement can support UHD video recording and playback, alongside continuous shooting of high-resolution imagery with other 20 megapixels.

    Kingston HyperX Predator DDR4-2400 16GB Memory Kit Review

    We have taken a look at a few different DDR4 memory kits over the past couple of months. The kits ranged from entry-level to high-end. Kingston’s HyperX brand is known as their high-end brand. Their best memory and solid state drives are part of the HyperX family. Of course with DDR4 being new we expected some new HyperX memory and Kingston delivered with their HyperX Predator series. This is not your typical memory, it is high-end with some of the tightest timings we have seen for DDR4 and the performance to match it. The Predator Series is available in speeds ranging from 2133 MHz all the way up to 3000 MHz. Today we will be taking a look at the HX424C12PB2K4/16 kit which is a 16 GB kit running at 2400 MHz with timings of 12-13-13-35 at 1.35V. Let’s see what this kit can do!     Our DDR4 memory kit came to us directly from Kingston in a pretty plain box. This is how the kit would come if you order it from Kingston directly. Opening the box up you can see that everything inside is nicely protected.

    Review: GSkill F4-2400C15Q-16GRK DDR4-2,400


    Introduction

    As we approach the end of 2014, the Intel X99 chipset remains the solitary consumer platform to use DDR4 memory. And while it's certainly arguable that the X99 platform represents a very small proportion of the total PC market, DDR4 will become far more mainstream in less than a year's time, particularly when Intel starts using it on upcoming Skylake processors in mid-2015.
    The DDR4 premium tax stands at about 50 per cent when compared to widely available DDR3. £180 buys you 16GB (4x4GB) of DDR4-2,133 memory while a 16GB (2x8GB) of the same speed DDR3 costs around £125.
    Looking to keep costs low for entry-level DDR4 is Taiwanese manufacturer G.Skill. It's now debuting a 16GB quad-channel DDR4-2,400 CL15 kit for £185, undercutting much of the competition by a handy degree. News of falling DDR4 prices may make users reconsider the X99 platform for their next build, particularly with the sub-£300 Core i7-5820K processor at the helm, so let's take a closer look at G.Skill's Ripjaws 4 budget offering.

    Available in red, blue, and black heatspreaders, the wonderfully named F4-2400C15Q-16GRK (black) ships with 15-15-15-35-2T latencies at a JEDEC standard 1.2V. Capacities range from 16GB (4x4GB), 32GB (4x8GB) to 64GB (8x8GB), though we imagine the 16GB kit will prove to be the most popular.
    The set is compatible with Intel's XMP 2.0 specification meaning that motherboards should pick up on the exact settings and voltages at the touch of a button in the BIOS. If this fails, for whatever reason, G.Skill's default SPD speed drops down to a JEDEC-approved 2,133MHz.

    These aren't the fastest G.Skill modules at this particular frequency, mind, as a 16GB pack of four sticks ships with 14-14-14-34-2T timings. Going by historical testing the very slight drop in latency generally isn't worth the additional expense on an Intel X99 platform.
    Build quality is good, if not outstanding, and standing at 40mm tall the modules fit comfortably below a large Noctua NH-D15 heatsink mounted in a sideways orientation on an Asus X99-Deluxe motherboard.
    They remain cool-ish to the touch after prolonged use, indicating that the heatspreaders are more for aesthetics than meaningful purpose. Getting them up and running is as easy as it sounds; install into a motherboard, click on the XMP setting, reboot into Windows, and you're good to go.
    Offering mid-pack frequency and latencies, the G.Skill's key feature is the relatively low street price of £185 for 16GB of quad-channel DDR4 memory.

    Apacer Rolls Out Commando DDR4 Overclocking Memory Module

    Apacer has recently launched their brand new generation of Commando DDR4 Overclocking Memory Modules with the newly designed weapon-styled assault rifle heat spreader to display the aggressive speeds. The new series is tailored for the latest Intel X99 chipset and Haswell-E processors and the whole series supports the latest Intel XMP 2.0 standards for maximum compatibility.
    All but one model in the new series run with 16-16-16-36 timings while the frequency ranges from 2400MHz to 3200MHz. The 2400, 2666 and 2800′ modules consume the default 1.2 volt while the 3000 and 3200MHz models consume a little more: 1.35 volts. The series adopts Quad-Channel packaging and supports different capacity combination of 16GB (4GB x4) and 32GB (8GB x4)

    Apacer’s design team pointed out that they adopts“maximized capacity and flexible tactics” as the design philosophy of Commando Series DDR4 Overclocking MemoryModule, and have balanced maximized heat dissipation effect and brilliant appearance. Hence, this series provides stable and excellent efficiency for long-standing e-sports battles as well as an amazing visual effect of e-sports equipment platform.

    MSI reaches DDR4 frequency of 4032MHz

    Loose timings though! but still, Running at an amazing 4032 MHz clock speed, the mighty X99S SLI PLUS remained fully stable and was even able to perform everyday tasks while setting this giant milestone at the 4032 MHz clock speed.
    The MSI X99S SLI PLUS, one of MSI's latest Intel X99 based motherboards, just managed to set the world's fastest DDR4 memory clock speed using Kingston Hyper X DDR4 4GB memory in the hands of overclocker Toppc.

    DDR4 Memory Overclocking Report and Beginner's Guide

    Introduction


    Intel introduced the consumer market to DDR4 with the introduction of the X99 platform. These are the early days of DDR4, and top kits are in the 3300MHz range, which is quite modest considering DDR4 is projected to be at 4000MHz+ in the near future. Nevertheless, DDR4 kits are pricey, and as with anything that costs you a kidney, it is good practice to get to know your purchase inside and out.

    At launch, there wasn't even standardized support for memory dividers above 26.66x, and many have taken to using BCLK dividers to achieve the rated speeds of their kits. DDR4 isn't overly complicated, and overclocking DDR4 is basically the same as overclocking DDR3. There are some interesting new changes that come with the new standard, and I will cover those today.


    In the slide above, you will notice that most of DDR4's advantages over DDR3 come in the form of power savings. For starters, the main DDR voltage is now 1.2v stock versus 1.5v with DDR3. A new voltage called VPP was also introduced; VPP is the voltage for the electrical high for DRAM row access.

    For DDR4, JEDEC decided to introduce an external VRM that provides a 2.5v electrical high voltage for the word line (row access). Since the word line voltage is no longer pumped up from the DDR voltage (like it was for DDR3), the inefficiencies of pumping up the DDR voltage are gone, and instead you get power savings.

    Crucial Launches DDR4 SO-DIMM Memory

    The memory in question is rated at a speed of 3400Mhz and a voltage rating of 1.35v. The modules carry a timing configuration of 16-18-18-40. The modules are binned, hand picked and tested by Corsair to achieve this truly impressive speed.


    Corsair demonstrated the new memory at CES 2015 running on a Gigabyte X99-SOC Champion motherboard at an overclocked speed of 3500Mhz without any changes to the voltage or the timings. We bet that with a little work towards loosening the timings would successfully yield higher clock speeds and even allow users to hit the mythical 4Ghz.
    The new memory carries a slightly different aesthetic to the previous DDR4 Dominator Platinum memory modules. The metallic bar on top is painted orange rather than silver otherwise the modules maintain the same white LED lighting, black shroud / cover and black PCB.
    Corsair is going to release the new Dominator Platinum DDR4 RAM in a kit of 4 memory sticks each 4GB large for a total of 16GB. The new kit is set to arrive to market for $999. That’s right, a thousand dollars. That’s twice the asking price of the 2800Mhz Dominator Platinum 16GB kit. And we suspect that this price won’t be going down any time soon due to the limited quantities that Corsair has on hand.
