AMD's Next Gen Products Taped Out, Possibly Delayed

At AMD’s Technology Investors Conference, Devinder Kumar, AMD’s Chief Financial Officer discussed the upcoming AMD upcoming products, which are now being taped out.
    The Move To FinFET

According to Kumar, in the last few months, AMD has been taping out products on a FinFET fab. AMD expects to have volume production of these new chips in 2016. Kumar did not specify exactly what size the transistors would be in these products, but he said AMD will skip past 20 nm transistors completely. Because AMD currently uses GlobalFoundries for all CPU production and pays TSMC to produce its GPU cores, it is likely that these new products will use either TSMC’s 16 nm FinFET or GlobalFoundries 14 nm FinFET fabs.
“We haven’t given the specifics, but you know they taped out in the last few months, and typically what happens on the product, depending on when you tape it out, it can be 12 to 14 months from the time you tape out the products to when you start shipping the products, but we haven’t been specific about, you know, exact timeframe,” said Kumar.
Kumar did not specify if the products being taped out were CPUs or GPUs, both of which are expected to arrive in 2016 and use FinFET transistor technology. It is possible that Kumar was talking about the Arctic Islands GPUs instead, or AMD could be currently taping out and testing both products.
    Zen Processors

Although the move to 16/14 nm FinFET transistor technology is a promising sign for AMD’s upcoming Zen processors, it appears that these CPUs will come later than expected. AMD’s last major update to its desktop CPU offerings came in January 2014, when the Kaveri architecture was released, and the enthusiast desktop FX series has not seen an update since October 2012.
At launch, these processors were already facing an uphill battle, as Intel’s competing products were both faster and more energy efficient, and this performance gap has only increased over time with new product releases. As such, many users hoping to see AMD become more competitive expected to see products based on the Zen architecture in Q1 2015.
    Arctic Islands

Similarly, AMD’s GPUs have faced tough competition in recent years from Nvidia’s Maxwell GPUs. AMD has managed to consistently release increasingly faster GPUs based on its GCN architecture by cramming more shaders into new graphics cards and introducing HBM, but Nvidia’s GTX 980 Ti still holds its position as the fastest graphics card on the market, and with significantly lower power consumption. Although the move to FinFET transistors only may not be enough to take the performance crown from Nvidia, the reduced power consumption paired with the new Arctic Islands architecture might be able to.
    How Long Will We Wait?

However, if Kumar’s aforementioned 12-14 month timeline holds true, this puts the release of both AMD’s Zen CPUs and the Arctic Islands GPUs back to the second half of 2016 at earliest, and they may arrive as late as Q1 2017.
Update, 12/14/15, 9:00am PT: Corrected AMD's next gen architecture codename.

Rumor: AMD Greenland GPU Coming Next Summer On 14nm – To Enter Mass Production In Q2 2016

AMD’s Radeon 400 series flagship GPU “Greenland” is reportedly debuting next summer and is set to enter mass production in Q2 2015 on the Samsung/Globalfounries 14nm LPP process. According to this latest rumor, AMD’s graphics flagship will enter mass production specifically at the end of the second quarter of next year around June, in time for its introduction at the end of the summer and around the back to school shopping season.

According to the extensive collection of leaks and information that have come out to date about Greenland, we know that this GPU is one of AMD’s upcoming next generation family of Arctic Islands graphics processing units which also include Baffin/Ellesmere.
It’s a good time to remind everyone to take this rumor with the usual grain of salt but it’s also worth mentioning that we had published an exclusive report last month confirming that AMD is planning to introduce its next generation Arctic Islands lineup in the summer of next year. And while we cannot validate today’s rumor coming from the far east, we should point out that it is very much aligned with our previous report.
The 3 Defining Features Of AMD’s Radeon 400 Series Flagship Graphics Card

AMD’s next generation “Arctic Islands” family of Radeon 400 series will represent the very first truly next generation of GPUs from AMD since the HD 7000 series which launched back in January of 2012. Primarily because it’s going to be the very first line-up that’s based on the faster, more power efficient and vastly denser 14nm/16nm FinFET technology nodes rather than the aging planar 28nm manufacturing process.
AMD officially confirmed back in May of this year that its 2016 lineup of GPUs – which includes Greenland as well as Baffin / Ellesemere – will feature three major improvements over the current R 300 series and Fury series. These include second generation HBM, a next generation GCN architecture as well as a more advanced 14/16nm FinFET process. The three of which mean that for the first time since 2012 we’re going to have a comprehensive product lineup that’s generationally ahead in a big way on both the performance and power efficiency fronts than what we have today with the 28nm flock of 300 series and Fury series graphics cards.

Greenland To Feature Globalfoundries / Samsung 14nm LPP Process

AMD’s CTO Mark Papermaster confirmed in November that the company will leverage Globalfoundries’ 14LLP process for its next generation GPUs but did not go into detail as to which specific products will be made at GloFo versus TSMC, another confirmed partner of AMD’s on the 16FF node. However, as mentioned earlier Greenland will reportedly be made using the Samsung/Globalfoundries 14LPP process according to the report we’re covering today as well as all the whispers we’ve personally been hearing over the past little while.
More Memory, More Bandwidth & A Lot More Transistors

At 1 Terabyte/s of memory bandwidth HBM 2.0 offers double the bandwidth of HBM 1.0 found in the R9 Fury X which features a 4096bit memory interface, 4GB of VRAM and a total of 512GB/s of bandwidth.
Greenland“ which has been numerously purported as the flagship GPU in the Arctic Islands family is set to be AMD’s most powerful and most advanced graphics chip to date. Rumored to feature up to 18 billion transistors and up to 32GB of second generation HBM – 16GB on the consumer variant and 32GB on the FirePro variant – with 1TB/s of memory bandwidth. Making it the largest ever graphics engine conceived by the company. At approximately twice the transistor count, double the memory bandwidth and four times the memory capacity of AMD’s current flagship the Fury X, Greenland is bound to the company’s first single GPU solution to bring 4K gaming to the masses.

The Arctic Islands graphics architecture will power everything from next generation mobile and desktop GPUs to APUs and semi-custom chips. There’s also strong evidence to suggest that Nindendo’s next generation gaming device “Nintendo NX” – which is coming next year – will be powered by an AMD semi-custom SOC. Making it a very likely candidate to feature AMD’s “Arctic Islands” GCN graphics architecture.

[UPDATED] AMD Greenland GPU Coming Next Summer On 14nm – To Enter Mass Production In Q2 2016

[UPDATE#1 10:32 AM ET December 22 2015] South Korea’s Electronic Times and Reuters both have picked up this story since yesterday and it no longer appears to be strictly a rumor.
    ———————————————————————————————————————————————-
    [UPDATE#2 10:57 AM ET December 22 2015]
We reached out to AMD and received the following comment.
As a matter of policy we don’t comment on rumor or speculation. At this time we have not disclosed the foundry partner for our forthcoming FinFET products. In early November, we announced with GLOBALFOUNDRIES we have taped out multiple products using GLOBALFOUNDRIES’ 14nm Low Power Plus (14LPP) process technology and we are currently conducting validation work on 14LPP production samples.
Our original article as it was published at 01:34 PM ET on December 21 2015 can be found below.

Rumor: Samsung to produce Greenland GPUs, Zen CPUs for AMD next year

An industry insider has indicated to the Korea Electronic Times that Samsung will be mass producing Greenland graphics chips for AMD starting in the second quarter of 2016. This follows the recent news GlobalFoundries will be producing for AMD, so it has two partners on its hands as of now.

Word is AMD will be "fluidly regulating" how many chips are produced by each company based upon yield and other factors.

It's said Greenland, which is based on the 14nm FinFET process technology, is twice as efficient as the 28nm Fiji. It's also said that shortly after Greenland begins production, Zen production will begin, and will also see production split amongst Samsung and GlobalFoundries facilities.

The same source has indicated Samsung is readying its 10nm process technology for 2017.

AMD Officially Confirms, R9 Fury X2 Delayed To 2016 To Better Align It With The Virtual Reality Market

AMD officially confirmed today that its dual Fiji “Gemini” Fury X2 card, has been delayed to 2016 to align it with major VR HMD launches next year. AMD originally debuted its dual Fiji board back in June at E3, along with all of its Fiji products the Fury X, Fury and Nano.

At E3 AMD announced that its dual Fiji board would launch sometime in the Autumn of 2015 ahead of the holiday season, however this has not happened and the company shed some light on the matter via earlier today via an email to our friend Damien from Hardware.fr.
    Hardware.fr
    Q. On the E3 Livecast, Lisa committed to shipping Fiji Gemini by Xmas. What happened? Is Fiji Gemini delayed?

    A. The product schedule for Fiji Gemini had initially been aligned with consumer HMD availability, which had been scheduled for Q415 back in June. Due to some delays in overall VR ecosystem readiness, HMDs are now expected to be available to consumers by early Q216. To ensure the optimal VR experience, we’re adjusting the Fiji Gemini launch schedule to better align with the market.
Working samples of Fiji Gemini have shipped to a variety of B2B customers in Q415, and initial customer reaction has been very positive.
AMD “Gemini” Fury X2 Samples Delivered, Product Launch Set To Coincide With Major VR Head Mounted Display Launches Next year

The official product name for the dual Fiji XT board code named “Gemini” is still unknown, so we’ll be using the “Fury X2” designation to refer to the card in the time being. While the card has been officially delayed to 2016, some figures in the upper echelon of the game development world such as Johann Andersson, chief architect behind the Frostbite engine, have already received a pre-release sample of the new card to play with as we had reported three weeks ago.

We had published an exclusive report last month in which our sources have told us that there have been multiple engineering samples of the card in circulation for a while, a fact that AMD has officially confirmed today. The specifications for the card have been finalized sometime ago, which we’ve shared in an exclusive earlier this month. The R9 Fury X2 will be the fourth and last Fiji based graphics card from AMD before the release of AMD’s next generation 14nm / 16nm Arctic Islands family.

    Tal e qual.
