Microsoft Bombs Antivirus Tests Yet Again

If you're using nothing but Microsoft Windows Defender to protect your PC, you may want to toss the system into a bonfire now, before it's too late for the rest of your network.
AV-TEST, which periodically evaluates how well different brands of antivirus software perform, put Microsoft at the bottom of the barrel once again in its latest round of evaluations. The good news, however, is that there are plenty of alternatives that work much better, and some of them are even free.
AV-TEST posted the results for its latest Windows 8.1 antivirus evaluations on its website today (March 25). The last time the company tested these products on Windows 8.1 was in October 2014 (it evaluated most of them on Windows 7 in January 2015), and while a few rankings have changed since then, Microsoft's status as the nadir stayed the same.
MORE: Best Antivirus Software and Apps
The Madgeburg, Germany-based testing lab evaluates antivirus programs on a three-tiered scale, which takes into account protection, performance and usability. A program can earn six points in each category, so a "perfect" program would score 18 overall.
Only three antivirus programs got perfect scores: Bitdefender Internet Security (currently $40 per year on the company website), Kaspersky Internet Security ($60 per year) and Qihoo 360 Antivirus (free, but available only in China). These security suites come from Romania, Russia and China, respectively, but the first two are available around the world. Each blocked 100 percent of real-world threats tested, with clean interfaces and speedy performance.
With 17 points apiece, German program Avira Antivirus Pro ($50), and Chinese programs Qihoo 360 Internet Security/Total Security Essentials (free, and available outside China) and Tencent PC Manager (free, for users outside China) also gave a very respectable showing. Qihoo 360 Internet Security protected against 99 percent of real-world malware attacks, while the other two covered the full 100 percent.
Finnish program F-Secure Internet Security ($40 per year) and American program McAfee Intel Internet Security ($80 per year) came in next. They protected against 100 percent and 98 percent of threats, respectively, but did suffer slight setbacks in performance and usability.
With 16 points apiece, the last two programs in the Top 10 were American programs Check Point ZoneAlarm Extreme Security ($70 per year) and Symantec Norton Security ($50 per year), which prevented intrusion by 99 percent and 100 percent of malware, respectively. They tended to perform less efficiently than their higher-ranking peers, however.
Two other programs offered perfect malware protection, but failed to crack the Top 10 due to heavy system load or difficulty of use: American-Japanese offering Trend Micro Internet Security ($40 per year) and Czech product Avast Free Antivirus (free).
Microsoft's Windows Defender (free with Windows 8/8.1) bottomed out with only 9.5 points overall, including an ignominious "0" in the protection category. It protected against only 77 percent of incoming threats, which is admittedly better than the 69 percent rating its Windows 7 counterpart, Microsoft Security Essentials, got in January.
American program ThreatTrack VIPRE Internet Security ($50 per year) did not do very well, either, scoring only 10 points for its middling protection, substandard performance and decent usability.
One thing to know about antivirus software is that each company's line of different products will usually share one malware-detection engine. (The exceptions are the Chinese companies, which use separate engines for domestic and overseas customers.)
Thus, Avira Free Antivirus should provide just as much protection as the top-rated Avira Antivirus Pro, although the former will have fewer features. Similarly, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus ($40 per year) and Kaspersky Anti-Virus ($40 per year) should be just as safe as the normally pricier Bitdefender Internet Security and Kaspersky Internet Security.
Users should note that while Windows Defender may be wholly insufficient to protect against Internet threats, that's not really what it's there for. Microsoft provides Windows Defender not as a cutting-edge antivirus program, but as a last-ditch effort to protect users who may not be tech-savvy enough to install anything else. Even a 77 percent protection rate is considerably better than nothing.

Microsoft, Yahoo amend 10-year search partnership in Marissa Mayer's biggest move yet

In 2009, Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer entered into a partnership in which Microsoft would supply Yahoo with all of its desktop search results and ads via Bing. Yahoo, in turn, would be responsible for selling Bing ads to potential advertisers.
The idea was that by joining forces, the duo would be able to better compete with Google. Considering the Mountain View-based company controlled nearly 65 percent of all US desktop searches last month, it’s clear that the partnership wasn’t very effective.
On Thursday, Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer and Microsoft’s Satya Nadella announced the two sides had amended the original 10-year agreement.

Moving forward (albeit gradually), only 51 percent of search results and ads will be provided by Microsoft’s Bing. Yahoo is free to do what it wants with the remaining 49 percent. Furthermore, Yahoo is no longer required to sell Bing ads – all of which is great news for Mayer and company.
Under the original agreement, Microsoft gave Yahoo 90 percent of the revenue from Bing ads shown on Yahoo. As The New York Times points out, this part of the agreement will remain unchanged for the 51 percent of Bing ads that will continue to run on Yahoo.
The web pioneer has plenty of options on the table in terms of how to monetize the 49 percent of search traffic it gets. The obvious answer would be for Yahoo to strike up a deal with Google although a partnership with Facebook may be worth looking into.
By no longer having to sell ads for Bing, Yahoo will no doubt be able to cut some costs by downsizing its ad sales department. Microsoft, meanwhile, will now need to hire its own Bing ad sales team.

Microsoft posts Q3 2015 financials, admits to Xbox troubles

Microsoft has released its latest quarterly financial results, and while it's seen growth in some areas the impact of its continuing Xbox One price cuts are undeniable.

According to the company's latest financial report, its revenue for its third financial quarter of 2015 grew six per cent year-on-year to $21.7 billion. Its gross margin sat at a percentage point higher for the same period, but the company's overall operating income was five per cent lower at $6.6 - the result of, among other things, the strong US dollar and a $190 million restructuring charge as it continues its executive shake-up and works to further integrate the Nokia smartphone subsidiary into the parent company.

'Customers continue to choose Microsoft to transform their business and as a result we saw incredible growth across our cloud services this quarter,' boasted Satya Nadella, chief executive officer, of Microsoft's performance for the quarter. 'Next week at Build we're excited to share more about how we're empowering every individual and organization on the planet to achieve more with the next generation of our platforms.'

While the cloud - up a whopping 106 per cent - and server - up 12 per cent - divisions enjoyed considerable success over the quarter, Microsoft's figures reveal a different story in the consumer-facing arena. The continuing slump in traditional PC sales is clearly visible in the company's report of a 24 per cent drop in revenue from its Device & Consumer Licensing arm, while consumer sales of its Office productivity suite plunged 41 per cent - balanced somewhat, the company argues, by more than half of those customers switching to Office 365 subscriptions instead.

Another big loser for the company is its Xbox division, which has recently been slashing the price of its Xbox One console in order to compete with better-selling rival Sony and its PlayStation 4. Revenue for the quarter dropped 24 per cent, the company admitted, with sales of the console - not reported in absolute figures - sitting lower than the same period last year. Not all was grim, however; in the same segment, sales of the company's Surface tablets shot up with revenue increasing 44 per cent - although, at $713 million still contributing a minority of the company's overall revenue.

Full details are available on Microsoft's investor relations portal.

    Microsoft loses InterDigital patent battle

    But will not be banned

Software giant Microsoft has lost a potentially costly patent battle against "patent holding outfit" InterDigital.

A US International Trade Commission judge has ruled that Redmond used technology in its mobile phones without permission.
On the plus side, Judge Theodore Essex, said that while Microsoft infringed two wireless cellular patents owned by InterDigital it would not be against the public interest to ban the Microsoft devices from being imported into the United States.
The judge's decision must be reviewed by the full commission before any import ban is enacted.
InterDigital first accused Nokia of infringing its patents in 2007. Microsoft acquired Nokia's handset division last year. The InterDigital patents relate to moderating a mobile phone's power to reduce signal interference.
The ITC originally cleared Nokia of infringement, but in 2012 the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the nation's top patent court, overturned that decision and sent it back.
Microsoft said that the fight was not over yet and it had a successful track record challenging patent assertion entities that misuse industry standards.
InterDigital Executive Vice President Lawrence Shay said the company looks forward to "continued discussion" with Microsoft to license its patents.

Microsoft release age detection tech demo

If you've been seeing some hate leveled at Microsoft on social media today, odds are it's due to a new online tool released by the company which attempts to gauge your age from an uploaded photo.

According to the Machine Learning Blog, The 'How Old Do I look?' website is based on the "APIs available in the Azure Machine Learning Gallery. The gallery contains many finished intelligent services such as Face, Speech, and Vision which are part of a new suite called Project Oxford from Bing and Microsoft Research." and took only a day to put together.

For the record, the site guesstimated that I was 36. I'm 29. But they were nice enough to apologise in advance with "Sorry if we didn't quite get the age and gender right - we are still improving this feature."

Microsoft’s Launches New Cloud And Productivity Tools During Ignite Keynote

During the opening keynote at Microsoft’s newly minted Ignite conference in Chicago, Microsoft announced several new cloud tools for IT Pros as well as productivity apps geared toward corporate end users. IT Pros will want to get their hands on the new Technical Preview for Windows Server 2016, which includes support for several new features including Nano Server and Storage Replica. The previously announced container support is not available in this release of the Technical Preview, but it should be available by the end of summer. Microsoft also announced the availability of the System Center 2016 Technical Preview.
On the database front, Microsoft announced a Technical Preview of SQL Server 2016, available this summer. Microsoft was fairly quiet on new features coming in SQL Server 2016, but end-to-end encryption and more advanced analytics were highlighted. The ability to stretch databases or individual tables to the cloud was also mentioned, and could potentially ease the management of cold or offline storage of archival data.
Cloud-based enterprise management tools were an area of particular focus in the keynote, as Microsoft announced several new tools which bridge the gap between the cloud and your datacenter.
Microsoft Operations Management Suite (OMS) is a new suite of tools intended to enable cross platform enterprise management from the cloud. Microsoft specifically mentioned support for Windows and Linux hosts running in physical, virtual, or cloud environments across a range of vendors, including VMware and AWS.
The newly announced Azure Stack is an expansion of the Azure Pack platform, allowing you to run both IaaS and PaaS apps within your datacenter, and allowing for seamless transitions between an on-premises Azure Stack deployment and the Azure cloud.
Finally, Microsoft showed off Microsoft Advanced Threat Analytics, which pools data from various system and audit logs and applies machine learning in order to establish common patterns and identify anomalies. Microsoft demonstrated these tools being used to identify compromised Active Directory credentials and quickly securing the account by resetting the password.

Microsoft: 'Google ships a big pile of... code' for Android updates

Google provides an open ecosystem with its Android mobile operating system, but that has led to fragmentation due to multiple versions of the OS running on such a large number of different products. Android is trying to close the gap, however, it's something that rivals such as Microsoft have picked up on while criticizing the OS.

"Google ships a big pile of... code, with no commitment to update your device," said Terry Myerson, Executive Vice President of Operating Systems, when speaking during the Microsoft Ignite conference keynote. "Google takes no responsibility to update customer devices and refuses to take responsibility to update their devices, leaving end users and businesses increasingly exposed every day they use an Android device."

Microsoft has had a rather dismal showing in the mobile space, but hopes Windows 10 will power a growing number of smartphones and tablets. The company also didn't disclose how it will deliver its updates to Windows 10 phones as needed in the future.

For consumers looking to upgrade to Windows 10 when it becomes available later this year, Microsoft wants the effort to go as smoothly as possible. PCs and laptops will be able to upgrade to the OS first, then smartphones, with the Xbox One and other products receiving the update at a later date.

Microsoft is officially acquiring the Wunderlist app

Earlier this week, we reported on Microsoft’s next potential acquisition, the popular app, Wunderlist. Now it seems that the move is official, with Wunderlist joining the ranks alongside Microsoft’s growing selection of other apps and services on multiple platforms.
Wunderlist is one of the more successful ‘to-do’ apps on smartphones, created by German app maker, 6Wunderkinder GmbH. This move isn’t entirely unprecedented, Microsoft has been acquiring apps recently in an effort to expand its presence on all platforms.

The acquisition price has not been disclosed and likely never will be but rumours are pointing towards a price of between $100 million and $200 million, which is a huge chunk of cash for a little checklist app.
Microsoft will likely have some deep integration planned for Wunderlist with its other apps and services later down the line but for now, it looks like the app will operate as normal. The Wunderlist CEO and creator seems to have high hopes for the future thanks to the Microsoft acquisition: “Joining Microsoft gives us access to a massive wealth of expertise, technology and people that a small company like us could only dream of amassing on its own.”

    Microsoft opens Transparency Centre Brussels

Microsoft is to give European governments access to its source code, in order that they might verify that the companies software has no back doors - or, the more cynical might say, no back doors the governments didn't put there themselves.

Microsoft has long been a closed software house. Its proprietary products, like Windows and Office, have their source code jealously guarded, while only small projects are released under free software or open source licences. It's an approach which has allowed Microsoft to become one of the largest software companies in the world, and arguably easily the most well-known, but it has a drawback: customers have to take Microsoft's word that the software does what it is claimed to do and nothing else.

To allay governmental concerns surrounding potential back door code, Microsoft has officially opened the Microsoft Transparency Centre in Brussels. Selected European, Middle Eastern and African (EMEA) governmental departments are able, though the Centre, to request access to the source code of Microsoft's products for security and functionality review - although not, of course, for modification or redistribution.

'We opened our first Transparency Centre in Redmond almost a year ago, and have already hosted several governments there. Today’s opening in Brussels will give governments in Europe, the Middle East and Africa a convenient location to experience our commitment to transparency and delivering products and services that are secure by principle and by design,' claimed Matt Thomlinson, vice president of Microsoft's security division, in a blog post announcing the move.

More information on the facility, which is accessible only to members of Microsoft's Government Security Programme, is available on the official blog post.

    UK Government Moves from Microsoft

Microsoft has dominated the business market for some time now. This is the case here in the UK, where most if not all government departments use Microsoft’s products in favour of everything else, but that’s about to change according to recent statements from officials.
Her Majesty’s Revenue or Customs, or more commonly known as HMRC, decided to switch from Microsoft products to what Google now has to offer. The change will take place due to the fact that Google has more power over cloud service and it looks like that’s what HMRC needs. This also marks a turning point in business solutions, having HMRC be the first major UK government department to break away from Microsoft services in favour of another competitor.
It is said that the switch will affect over 70,000 employees, who will join another 2,500 Cabinet Office users already on Gmail accounts. Still, there are over 450,000 government employees using Microsoft products, so we won’t see the majority of departments dropping Microsoft’s products overnight. But this does prove that Microsoft is declining in strength over corporate business solutions.
In terms of security, UK government officials seem to trust Google’s own security and ability to keep sensitive information safe on its data centres, but is this a good thing? They seem to think so. However, they should also take into account that mixing cloud storage with sensitive information may not seem a good mix, especially when your tax information is in the middle of it. What are your thoughts on the matter?

Microsoft makes mapping and display ad deals with Uber, AOL

In a bid to slim down its money-leaking online division and focus upon its strengths Microsoft announced yesterday that it would offload various such businesses to other technology companies.
    Microsoft and Uber
Microsoft will sell some of its map generating technology to Uber. In a deal announced yesterday, the part of Microsoft's mapping unit that works on the acquisition of map imagery and map data processing will be taken over by Uber.

The often controversial taxi-hailing firm already uses a combination of map services from Google, Apple and Baidu and the Microsoft mapping unit acquisition doesn't mean that will change said a source. Microsoft said it will not collect its own mapping imagery but will continue to work with providers such as Nokia for its own maps.
The 100 or so Microsoft employees working in the affected business area will be offered jobs with Uber. No financial terms have been disclosed by either party, reports Reuters.
    Microsoft and AOL
In a 10-year deal with AOL (now part of Verizon) AOL will sell display advertising (not search advertising) on MSN, Outlook.com, Xbox, Skype and other Microsoft apps. As part of the agreement Bing will become the search engine behind AOL searches from next year.

Microsoft released a statement about the AOL partnership; "Today's news is evidence of Microsoft’s increased focus on our strengths: in this case search and search advertising and building great content and consumer services," it said. The world's largest software company asserted that Bing will turn a profit during the next financial year.
