    Office 2016

Microsoft Office 2016 for desktops set to arrive later this year

Whereas yesterday belonged to Windows 10, today is all about Office. Microsoft on Thursday revealed that the next iteration of its productivity suite for the desktop will be called Office 2016 and that it’ll remain the comprehensive experience that people are already familiar with. The admission came buried inside a post about the new Office universal appsfor Windows 10 that Microsoft touched on during yesterday’s event.
Not wanting to let too much out of the bag just yet, the post only revealed that Office 2016 will be best suited for a PC with a keyboard and mouse and that they have compelling new experiences coming as part of the new suite. The Redmond-based company said they’d have more on the subject in the coming months and that we can expect to see Office 2016 made available in the second half of this year.

Last September, alleged slides of Office 2016 leaked onto the web. What we saw was an Office with a much darker theme, reportedly one of the top requests in Office 2013. As you can see above, it does seem to be a bit easier on the eyes versus staring at a bright white screen for hours on end.
Office 2016 is also expected to feature the spiritual return of Clippy (Clippit), the animated paperclip assistant bundled with much earlier versions of Office. The new assistant is reportedly called “Tell Me.” It’s essentially a search field positioned at the top of documents to facilitate searching for questions regarding Office features.

It’s unclear if this will be a voice-controlled feature powered by Cortana or simply a standard search field.

Office will soon be free and properly touch optimised

Microsoft had a lot to tell us during its Windows 10 event and several big announcements to make. One of the smaller announcements, was that its Office software suite will be getting a proper makeover for touch devices and it will be pre-installed for free on small tablets and phones running Windows 10.With general availability of the Office universal apps expected later this year and preview versions on Windows 10 Tech Preview in coming weeks, we should be able to get our hands on this pretty soon. The Office universal apps run everywhere Windows 10 does, from desktop to tablet and phone, and apart from some slight UI changes, the same code is running behind the app on any Windows 10 powered device. This brings a consistent style to all Windows 10 devices and should make it easier to use Office on any device with the new apps for Android andiOS.

The suite will launch with Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Onenote, Outlook Mail and Outlook Calendar providing most of the applications Office users use everyday. All of these have been totally redesigned from the current desktop apps, while maintaining the functionality and fidelity. For instance the ribbon along the top of all Office apps today, is still present, appearing where it normally would on tablets and available as a drag out menu when run on a phone. All documents and recent files will also be accessible through Onedrive and Dropbox, with recent document lists synchronizing almost instantly between different devices.
The Office team is definitely not abandoning desktop versions of Office however, with Office 2016, the successor to the current Office 2013 already in development. Office 2016 will still be optimised for keyboard and mouse as normal and should come out during the second half of 2015.

Office 2016 for desktop coming too

    Second half of 2015

Office is a very important product for Microsoft and the company doesn't plan to abandon the desktop version anytime soon.

These new desktop versions are touch optimized and will end up as part future Office 365 releases, so you will need some kind of subscription for it. We have mentioned that Windows 10 Preview from January just got Word, Excel and PowerPoint Previews. They are available for your testing pleasure under Windows 10.

Desktop / Notebook lovers and people who actually want and need to write essays, articles, reports, will want the real thing, and the next office for desktop iteration is called Office 2016.
Microsoft has officially confirmed that the new version is to be expected in the second half of 2016 and that the beta should come out soon. The second half of 2016 is the general availability date.
Office 2016 is optimized for standard keyboard and mouse input on your desktop and notebook, but Microsoft didn’t talk about touch input.
Office 2013 was an all-connected office package, and supported could storage and sharing. We are sure that 2016 will continue down that path. It will be interesting to learn if you will need an Office 365 license to work on your office files on tablets and phones in case you own Office 2016.

Cortana to work double duty as Office 16 virtual assistant

Rumors surfaced last September that Clippy’s spiritual successor (actually named Clippit) was slated to appear in the next version of Office, known as Office 16. At that time, we were told that it would arrive as a modified version of the “Tell Me” helper currently found in Office Online apps but that may no longer be the case.
In what probably isn’t terribly surprising at this point, Microsoft is reportedly planning to have its virtual assistant Cortana serve double duty as your Office assistant.
Specifically, Microsoft is said to be working on a “Work Assistant” app that uses Cortana (or perhaps its backend) to open, edit and share documents using voice commands. Sources tell The Verge that it’s currently just a prototype but they plan to integrate it into Office across mobile and desktop platforms in the not-too-distant future.

The idea of Cortana arriving on Android and iOS is certainly intriguing although I suspect its functionality would be limited to Office applications, at least initially.
Another thought: could this be the top-secret Personal Agent project that Bill Gates has been working on?
For the uninitiated among us, Clippy was the nickname given to the annoying assistant that was built into earlier versions of Microsoft’s productivity suite. The tool – an animated paperclip – seemed to pop up at the most inopportune times to offer assistance. Fortunately, Cortana is much more subtle (and useful).

Google Outs Gameplan To Overthrow Microsoft Office

There are few pieces of software as ubiquitous as Microsoft's Office, and given its prominence for the past two-and-a-half decades, it's a hard ruler to overthrow. But that notion doesn't tame the likes of Google. In fact, the company's come forward about its plans to dethrone Microsoft Office, and nab at least 80% of its business. Now that's what we call ambition. Google's Microsoft Office chase began ten-years-ago with the launch of its Google Apps platform. Today, Google Apps has become a solid all-in-one solution for businesses wanting to move most of their data and services to the cloud, such as email, storage, and so forth.
Since 2007, Google's Docs service has been integrated as well, which allows users to create documents, spreadsheets, and slideshows right on the Web. Best of all, these documents can be edited by more than one person at once, and have advanced sharing capabilities.
    image: http://hothardware.com/ContentImages...oogle_Apps.png
It wasn't until a couple of years later that Microsoft introduced its own solution, called Office Online. With its rollout, Microsoft proved that it wasn't at all on the ball. After all, it's probably not a good thing that a competitor which had nothing to do with office suites came out with a next-generation platform before you did.
Nonetheless, Google's early entry no doubt helped with its growth, but Google has some key plans in place to help fuel more rapid growth going forward. At the forefront, the company isn't going to worry about copying every single feature off of Microsoft; 85~90% is suitable. Chances are the remaining 10~15% of features would be niche to the point where having them missing affects very few people.
Interoperability is also important; treating Office documents as a "first-class citizen". That means allowing documents created through Microsoft's Office apps to open up in Google Docs and also Google's Quickoffice accurately. This ties into the next point, of not trying to convince enterprises to make the move over to Google Apps. Given the service's features, Google hopes that it will just happen over time.
    image: http://hothardware.com/ContentImages...ocs_Writer.jpg
One of the key reasons for this subtle luring is that with Google Apps, you don't need to pay for an entire Office license for someone who barely makes use of it. With Google Apps, there's a flat fee (and a reasonable one; $120/yr) that delivers Google's Docs apps as well as a plethora of other ones, like Gmail.
Other plans help lock people in: Teach them about the features that they won't want to go without, get them to use other products that Google offers, and also show them how Google's cloud can allow them to work on-the-go.
As an end-user, I can understand where Google is going with its Docs service and others, but I've come to prefer Office quite a bit more for a couple of reasons: I can use a desktop app, the performance seems better (online), and the interface is also better. But as I said, I'm an end-user, for business, cloud and mobile emphasis probably wouldn't prove to be too much of a detriment. I do question whether Google's quoted 80% is a wee bit too ambitious, though. Time will tell.

Um dos maiores problemas do google docs é não dar para fazer indicies automáticos paginados, já tentei fazer alguns trabalhos académicos e falha neste aspecto bem como na correcção de erros para português.
