The third installment of Blizzards highly popular RTS game, StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void, will emerge as a closed beta test coming up on March 31st. With two weeks to go until they start, Blizzard posted to their
official blog some of the things that you can expect to see in that beta. As a beta, as usual, don’t expect it to be complete in any way.
StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void closed beta starts on March 31st 2015. Look for new units and a new cooperative mode. But more than that, definitely be on the lookout for bugs and other game destroying things. Blizzard is committed to bringing a great experience to market with little need for a day 1 patch. They’ve been nice enough to tell prospective brave beta testers exactly what to expect on their blog post. Mainly to be aware that it’s a beta and will most certainly be rough around the edges.
“Overall, we’re incredibly excited to be taking Legacy of the Void into beta. We’ve been working hard to make this game the best it can be. Thank you for all the feedback you have offered on StarCraft II these past few years, and we look forward to hearing even more of what you have to say in the beta.”
But what’s new? Starting resources will change surrounding each base, half with 1500 and the other half with 750. This change is to encourage players to expand far more aggressively than normal by almost literally forcing you in order to support large armies.
First of all, and likely most important, Blizzard also added some new units to each race in StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void, with more to come as the beta progresses. The Zerg will be blessed with a new ranged unit called the Ravager. It uses a corrosive bile to deal large area damage from afar.
The Terran’s get the Cyclone, a factory unit that has the ability to lock onto targets and deal massive amounts of damage even while on the move.
The Protoss get two new units right off of the bat, the Adept and the Disruptor. The Adept is a core gateway unit that does long ranged damage and can even teleport using a Psionic Transfer ability. The other unit is the Disruptor, a light-mech unit that has a great ability called Purification Nova which deals splash damage while it becomes invulnerable.
There are also some other minor changes that are being made to the gameplay as well, such as the starting worker count, the scan range and even the game speed. Game speed has been modified to match that of real life, so 5 seconds is indeed 5 seconds for an ability cool-down.
If you’re an avid StarCraft II player, then you may be receiving an invite soon. But be mindful that it’s a beta and isn’t going to be super awesome from the get go, they need your help. Remember they need your help to make it awesome.
“To be clear, our goal for this expansion is to work together with all of you to make Legacy of the Void as awesome as possible.”
