    Firewatch is a single-player first-person video game where you, as a man named Henry, explore the Wyoming wilderness after taking a summer job as a fire lookout. What is supposed to be a peaceful respite from your complicated life takes a turn when you start to question some of the things that are happening to you. Your only human connection is over a handheld radio, which you’ll use to speak with Delilah, your supervisor, about the things both of you are experiencing.

    Firewatch To Last 5/6 Hours On Average; No VR Support Planned


    Campo Santo’s Firewatch has slowly risen to a high level of interest since its reveal. The unique art style and interesting premise (a mystery/adventure game played in first person, with the main character being a newly recruited fire lookout) propelled this to one of the most anticipated indie games for PC and PlayStation 4.
    Now that the February 9 release date is drawing ever closer, we’ve reached out to Nels Anderson who worked as a designer and programmer on Firewatch.

    According to him, one playthrough should take you around five or six hours. Also, there seem to be no current plans to support VR devices like Oculus Rift, HTC Vive or PlayStation VR.

    • How many hours of gameplay do you reckon players will get out of the game, on average?
    • It’s pretty hard to say since there’s actually quite a lot of “off the beaten path” areas in the game that players won’t have to visit. On average, I’d say maybe 5-6 hours … ? When I play it, it feels comparable to the length of a trilogy of movies or a TV mini-series.


    • Firewatch seems like a nice fit for VR. Are you considering support for devices like Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR?
    • We certainly think VR is cool, but given our very small team size, we don’t have anything specific planned for VR right now. Getting a game that wasn’t built specifically for VR game to really feel good is actually quite challenging, so if we wanted to do something there, we’ll definitely need to roll up our sleeves and dig in.

    Firewatch Interview – A Walkie-Talkie Mystery


    Not all games need to have AAA production and lots of killing. The industry has thankfully embraced indie products and the adventure genre in the last few years, for the joy of everyone who longed for more variety in our favorite form of entertainment.
    Campo Santo’s Firewatch is one of the most intriguing indie adventure games due in 2016, for sure. Its deceivingly simple, yet alluring graphic style has been modeled after a painting made by Olly Moss.
    The story is similarly inviting: you’re a volunteer fire lookout in Firewatch, just taking control of your own tower in the forest when strange occurrences start happening around the main character, Henry. His only way to communicate with his supervisor Delilah will be the walkie-talkie you’ve seen in the screenshot above, and it will be possible to choose different dialog options.

    We’ve reached out to Nels Anderson, designer and programmer at Campo Santo, to learn more about the game (due on February 9 for PC and PlayStation 4). Enjoy!






    • Why did you specifically set the game in Shoshone National Forest? Also, how big is the explorable area in the game?
    • The Shoshone National Forest is near where both Sean and myself grew up. Sean especially spent a lot of time there when he was younger, hunting with his dad and similar things. So when the idea was had for a game about isolation in the wilderness, Shoshone just made sense. As for how big it is … heh, I’m not really sure. It feels pretty big to me! It’s obviously not some bonkers Skyrim/GTA scale or anything like that, but when I make my way through the game, I’m often reminded that there actually is quite a bit there!


    • Clearly, the relation with Delilah is central to Firewatch. However, while in some previews I’ve read that your answers to her will make a difference, in others I’ve read that there are no branching paths or multiple endings. Can you explain what kind of difference will player choices make in the game?
    • Our hope is that Delilah will feel like a real person you come to know through the course of the game. The kind of experience you’d build with a real person – shared moments, in-jokes, etc. And the shared history changes on how you make your way through the story and what you choose to talk about. There isn’t the kind of “good ending/bad ending” setup that somewhat belongs to Western RPGs but a more nuanced and organic experience. When two different people play Firewatch, after they’re done, we hope they’ll be able to surprise each other with stories about different things that happened in their respective games.


    • Can we expect to have to deal with puzzles in Firewatch?
    • There aren’t Myst-esque puzzles or anything like that. You’ll certainly have to engage with the game’s systems to make your way through the story, but you won’t be needing to rearrange scrambled letters to spell a word or match coloured tiles or anything like that.

    • Do you intend to release free/paid DLC after the launch, perhaps expanding the storyline?
    • Nope, Firewatch contains the entire story we wanted to tell. It doesn’t really lend itself to an expansion of that sort.


    • Firewatch seems like a nice fit for VR. Are you considering support for devices like Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR?
    • We certainly think VR is cool, but given our very small team size, we don’t have anything specific planned for VR right now.     • At E3 2015, you announced that the game would be a console exclusive for PlayStation 4. Does that mean that Firewatch is never coming to Xbox One or is there a chance in the future?
    • Firewatch is making its console debut on PS4 and will be launching alongside that on Steam. We don’t have any other platform announcements at this time.

    First-Person Adventure Firewatch Priced $19.99; 10% Discount Possible Via Steam/PS Plus

    We already knew that that Firewatch would be releasing on February 9th, but the price tag of the first-person adventure wasn’t known. Developer Campo Santo has now revealed the game’s price.

    Firewatch will be priced $19.99 on both Steam, and through the PS Store. Those who pre-order the title via Steam, will receive a 10% discount. For PS4 owners, the title can be bought on release. PS Plus members will receive a 10% discount as well.

    Firewatch is a first-person mystery adventure

    Firewatch is a single-player first-person mystery set in the Wyoming wilderness.
    The year is 1989. You are a man named Henry who has retreated from his messy life to work as a fire lookout in the Wyoming wilderness. Perched high atop a mountain, it’s your job to look for smoke and keep the wilderness safe. An especially hot, dry summer has everyone on edge. Your supervisor Delilah is available to you at all times over a small, handheld radio—your only contact with the world you’ve left behind. But when something strange draws you out of your lookout tower and into the forest, you’ll explore a wild and unknown environment, facing questions and making choices that can build or destroy the only meaningful relationship you have.
    A Note: Firewatch is a video game about adults having adult conversations about adult things. If you plan on playing with a younger gamer, that might be good to know going in.
    Firewatch was officially announced back in March of 2014 for PC. The game was originally slated for a 2015 release, but will now be releasing on February 9th. The first-person adventure game runs on the Unity Game engine.

    If I had to pick one of Firewatch's half-dozen or so fantastic ideas and apply it to gaming in general, it's the notion that "open-world" doesn't have to mean "enormous world". Firewatch takes place in a square of gorgeously rendered North American wilderness, where summer seems baked into the very earth. You can traverse the map at a walking speed in about fifteen minutes, and experience everything the game has to offer within five hours.



    Yet Firewatch does a fantastic job of convincing you this self-contained landscape is vast, isolated and wild. The rugged, complex terrain requires your devoted attention to navigate, and it's incredibly easy to become, if not lost, then certainly disoriented. I've played plenty of walking simulators over the last five years, but this is gaming's first purpose-built hiking simulator, where the landscape is more than an accompaniment to a verbose monologue. It is a challenge in itself. Not a particularly stern challenge, but its rocky gorges and dense woodland provides just enough of an obstacle to facilitate Firewatch's intriguing approach to storytelling.

    Firewatch places you in the boots of a man named Henry, who takes a job as a fire lookout in the Two Forks region of Wyoming, out of a desire to escape his old life in Boulder, Colorado which has been slowly falling apart over several years. Rather than gradually reveal the specifics of Henry's background as I expected. Firewatch front-ends Henry's past, narrating it by text as Henry approaches his watchtower, and letting you choose certain events from it, such as what kind of dog he used to own.



    I'm avoiding too many specifics because the reasons behind Henry's desire for isolation are not what I anticipated, and your judgement of him will depend on how sympathetic you are toward his reasons for desiring isolation. This isn't the only time Firewatch subverted my expectations of it either. For the most part this is a good thing, but not completely, which we'll get into soon enough.

    Upon arrival at his watchtower, Henry is immediately contacted by Delilah, a veteran fire-lookout who occupies the tower North of Henry's. The two communicate frequently over radio, and the game is primarily about the relationship between them. Initially, Delilah takes a boss/mentor role, instructing Henry in his duties and sending him out on jobs, such as to investigate someone setting fireworks at the lake near Henry's tower.



    Henry's first foray out of the tower is an amusing little escapade that sets the tone for the first third of the game. Henry constantly jumps at shadows while Delilah quietly reassures him that it's Just The Forest. When Henry encounters a stranger in the dark, for example, Delilah remarks that it's "part of the fun."

    Take a picture in Firewatch, have a real-world photo printed and sent

    Firewatch seems to have caught the eye of many a gamer, garnering positive reviews from critics and gamers alike. And there happens to be a feature in the PC version that isn't available anywhere else, and it lets you memorialize the beautiful graphics forever.


    A disposable camera that's found in the forest can be used to take photos in-game, but the surprise is that once you finish the game you'll actually be given a link to a store where you can buy prints of those photos that you took. TechnoBuffalo gave it a try and the prints are of very good quality and reflect the quality and care put into the games engine.

    The photos themselves cost $15 and the service is available around the world with free shipping included. Oh, and all of the shots that were taken before you got the disposable camera are also developed for you. The whole idea is incredibly new and fascinating. Graphics are getting to the point where it's either very realistic, in certain lights, or representative of fantastic art. The scenery from Firewatch is no exception, and is stunning, to say the least. What a novel service!

    Ontem aproveitei para experimentar isto.

    Namorada a trabalhar até tarde, sentei-me no sofá, desliguei as luzes e joguei isto na TV da sala (55") com o som das colunas alto.

    A verdade é que eu detesto este tipo de jogo, mas dado que se passa num ambiente de floresta (adoro andar na floresta quando vou á aldeia) lá me deixei "levar".

    Joguei umas 2h, e basicamente o jogo é ires do ponto A a B. Parece mau mas... estranhamente não é. Pelo rádio vais falando com uma gaja que, supostamente, é a tua chefe. Começam a criar uma relação.

    Não vou adiantar muito, mas a verdade é que estou genuinamente intrigado pela história e acontecimentos que vão ocorrendo.

    Ressalvo no jogo os gráficos, a banda sonora assim como o próprio ambiente que o jogo tem.

    Penso que é jogo que tem de ser jogado em ambiente completamente calmo, sem distrações. Tal como tive ontem.

    Estive quase para o comprar nas ultimas promoções do Steam, mas como é um jogo que se acaba em 3 ou 4 horas, decidi esperar até descer abaixo dos 10€.

    Para mim, este jogo devia ter ganho um prémio de artwork, é dos títulos mais bonitos de 2016.
