    The Last Guardian [PS 4]

The Last Guardian Development Being Handled by PS4 Lead Architect Mark Cerny

Following the report from UK newspaper, The Guardian revealed that Team ICO’s The Last Guardian could be coming at E3 2015, Just Add Water head Stewart Gilray, during the PS Nation podcast, suggested that Mark Cerny could be working to finish it.

    Gilray sugested:
“a certain somebody’s software team” is handling development,
“And that certain somebody is the guy who helped out with the architecture of Vita and PS4. I’m lead to believe his team is now running Last Guardian to finish.”
The Last Guardian Development Being Handled by PS4 Lead Architect Mark Cerny

Mark Cerny was the lead architect for the PS4 and the PSVita, headed up development on Knack and worked with Naughty Dog on Crash Bandicoot, Jak & Daxter and more. Hopefully we will see and learn more about The last Guardian during Sony’s E3 2015 Press Conference, which will be held at 6:30 PM PDT on Monday, June 15. The event itself will take place at the L.A. Memorial Sports Arena in Los Angeles.

Sony did not reveal any more details, but there will surely be a ton of PlayStation announcements and some very exciting surprises. Naughty Dog is currently going “all hands on deck” on Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, as they are probably preparing for a strong E3 2015 showing, to provide fans eagerly waiting to get a taste of the most anticipated PlayStation 4 game after the disappointing news of its delay.
Guerilla’s open world RPG, Horizon, is probably going to be revealed with hopefully some beautiful gameplay, and we might get a teaser of Sucker Punch’ new title. We can hope for a PS4 God of War announcement as well.
Insomniac will give us a glimpse of the Ratchet & Clank reboot title for the PS4, which is a re-imagining of the franchise set to release alongside the movie in 2016. We will likely get a better look at Project Morpheus, along with a few VR optimised titles, and probably a release date for the device.
The new title from Quantic Dream should most definitely be revealed, which will surely be something to look forward to, as their Dark Sorcerer demo at E3 2013 was truly something spectacular and demonstrated the potential of the PlayStation 4 hardware in the capable hands of the Quantic Dream studio, led by the visionary David Cage.
We will bring you any new inforamtion on The Last Guardian, Sony and E3 2015 as soon as it becomes available.

E3 2015: PS4 Exclusive The Last Guardian Game Details, Beautiful 1080p Screenshots and Box Art Released

Last night, Sony’s E3 2015 press conference kicked off with a bang. Re-announcing the long (long, long) awaited adventure game that has been in development since 2007, and was originally announced at E3 2009 exclusively for PlayStation 3, Sony revealed The Last Guardian running on PlayStation 4 console. The gameplay footage showcased the ruins of a temple-like locale in the mountains with main character of the game making his way through the level with the help of his “pet” griffin. Sony has now shared some beautiful 1080p screenshots along with the box art of the game.

The Last Guardian Coming to PlayStation 4 in 2016 – Game Details Revealed Along with Beautiful 1080p Screenshots and Box Art

At its E3 2015 press conference, Sony confirmed that The Last Guardian is still alive, and after going through a troubled development cycle, tons of delays and supposed cancellations, the game is finally being properly put together by SCE Japan Studio exclusively for PlayStation 4. The first PlayStation 4 gameplay footage that Sony revealed yesterday showcased the familiar young boy that we have seen in previous trailers, who, using the powers of his large pet-like creature named Trico, solved environmental puzzles and made his way through hazardous obstructions to get to the finish line.

The Last Guardian is a spiritual successor to Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, and like Team Ico’s previous games, it is basically centered on a core partnership. The developer of the game describes it as: “In a strange and mystical land, a young boy discovers a mysterious creature with which he forms a deep, unbreakable bond. The unlikely pair must rely on each other to journey through towering, treacherous ruins filled with unknown dangers.” The game details revealed by the developer have been shared below.

    • An Unlikely Companion: Discover a fantastical beast named Trico who will act as companion and protector, forging a bond that drives an emotional and harrowing journey.
    • Truly Unique Gameplay – Take control of an ordinary young boy who must communicate with his gigantic companion in order to overcome obstacles and survive mysterious dangers.
    • A Beautiful Fantasy World: Through advanced lighting and particle effects, detailed environments, and lifelike character animation, The Last Guardian transports players to a breathtaking world filled with crumbling ruins and mysterious secrets to discover.

After the conference, Sony Computer Entertainment released a brand new batch of screenshots for The Last Guardian, alongside the box art of the game, as part of the official press kit. You can check these screenshots out below. The game is currently being developed “under completely new conditions” and is slated to launch in 2016.

Sony Explains the Long Delay With The Last Guardian

The Last Guardian almost has as much development time as Duke Nukem Forever had. Sony was kind enough, however, to explain why there’s been such a long delay since the initial announcement of The Last Guardian in 2009.

Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida opened up to Gamespot about why they’ve had such a long development time, citing a switch in platforms as being the principal reason.

Since 2007 The Last Guardian had been under development for the PS3, expected to be released at least before the announcement of the PS4. Due to the enormity of the project, that didn’t quite happen as planned. As a result, in 2012 the decision was made to move the development over to the PS4, and so much of the game had to be rebuilt completely to accommodate the new platform.
“The project went on so many technical changes. We decided to move the project to PS4 in 2012, but because the PS3 code was so optimised for SPUs on that console lots of code had to be thrown away and rebuilt. It was a tough decision to move from PS3 to PS4 because it was running on PS3. But not at the performance [level] we needed … We knew [we had to decide] whether to continue the game on PS3 with a compromised vision, or move to PS4.”
    – Shuhei Yoshida
Thankfully the narrative and general direction was still ongoing and wasn’t as affected by the change in platforms. They could continue to develop the story, lore and other creative aspects without having the programmatic base available, which apparently has helped keep the project on track.

Yoshida also said that even though they faced increasing challenges they never wanted to actually abandon the project completely at all. Press, fans of the series and project as well as the core team doing the development work all wanted to make it a reality, so they drove on despite the increasing confrontation.
The decision to re-announce the project was one done with complete confidence in the direction they’re headed and with the amount of work completed thus far. They wanted to make sure that it was at least running correctly on the PS4 with few issues in house.
“My thing was, when we re-announced The Last Guardian, we had to have it totally running on PS4 at the right performance and be confident about the release window that we announced. In our mind, we have the tech, vision, and design down. Lots of levels have already been made, so we are confident about 2016, so we [announced] it.”
    – Shuhei Yoshida
The Last Guardian was announced again at E3 2015 at Sony’s press conference and is slated for a 2016 release date solely on the PS4. It’ll remain exclusive for the lifetime of the game.

The Last Guardian was years in the making, and Sony feels the pressure

Gamers have patiently waited for The Last Guardian for a long time, after the game was originally announced during E3 2009 for the PlayStation 3.

However, it was a general relief to be able to show the game off during E3 2015 and promise a 2016 ship date to gamers.

"Last night was, but now the reality settles in. We have to deliver, we have extra pressure, and the team has too, but it's a good pressure. The team is super happy," said Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony's Worldwide Studios at Sony Computer Entertainment, in a statement to GamesIndustry.

However, game development took a few extra years, and in 2012, the team knew the PlayStation 4 was coming - and it was difficult to ensure the game was optimized for both the PS3 and PS4.

"They spent a lot of time optimizing to PS3 but that's a really unique architecture, so everything had to be kind of redone for PS4. So that took until last year, when there was huge progress. The fundamentals of the game architecture were done so the actual game was playable and being implemented on PS4. That's how we felt confident enough to show it and say next year."

The Last Guardian is expected to hit the market sometime in 2016, and will be available for the PS3 and PS4.
