    SK Hynix Details HBM2 Production Timeline

    For the upcoming graphics generation, both Nvidia and AMD are set to use HBM2 for their upcoming Pascal and Polaris graphics cards. While Samsung has already revealed that they have kicked off mass production for HBM2, we’re getting word on competitor SK Hynix’s plans for the new memory technology. According to Golem.de, the 4GB modules will start mass production in Q2 while the 8GB variants in Q3.
    With HBM2, the maximum capacity per stack jumps from 1GB in HBM1 to 8GB with HBM2. This will allow GPUs to have up to 32GB of VRAM using the 8GB modules in the Fiji/Fury configuration, 16GB using the 4GB modules and 8GB using the lowest 2GB stacks. Each stack also doubles the bandwidth from 128GBps to 256GBps. Due tot he bandwidth increase all coming from a 1Ghz clock rate boost, we can expect latency to be severely reduced.
    Given that SK Hynix along with AMD were the pioneers for HBM1, it is surprising that Samsung was the first one to reach mass production for the 4GB modules. On the other hand, SK Hynix may still have locked in the 2GB stacks first, the ones more likely to be used for consumer GPUs. With 4 stacks, this will allow for 8GB of VRAM, plenty for 4K and VR GPUs, while 2 stacks will do fine with 4GB for mainstream cards. Hopefully, this means that HBM2 cards will arrive sooner rather than later.

    HBM2 is incredibly small when compared to GDDR5, and even HBM1

    GTC 2016 - On day two of NVIDIA's GPU Technology Conference, we walked around the exhibition halls with the super-awesome Dimitry from Hardware Canucks and ran into the SK Hynix booth. What did we see? HBM2. HBM1 was there side-by-side with a 1GB chip, while the HBM2 chip was a much larger 4GB chip.



    Last year at GTC 2015, we did the same thing and walked into HBM1 - because at the time it was only becoming available, and was still months away from AMD using it on their Fiji-based Radeon R9 Fury X. Fast forward a few months, and HBM1 made its way onto the Fury X.

    NVIDIA announced its new GP100-based Tesla P100 video card yesterday, which is the first video card to feature the Pascal architecture, and HBM2. Seeing HBM2 at GTC 2016 was great, as we could see how small it was in person, but we weren't allowed to get close to it - which is why the image isn't exactly up close. If we get closer later in the day, we'll take another photo and update the article.

    Remember that HBM2 has bandwidth of up to 1TB/sec, with the Tesla P100 hitting 720GB/sec - an insane jump on the GeForce GTX Titan X with its 334GB/sec (with GDDR5) and even the HBM1-based R9 Fury X and its 512GB/sec.

    HMB 2.0 GPUs unlikely for 2016 GPUs



    Too expensive, limited supply
    Our well-placed industry sources have told us that we should not expect to see the HMB 2.0 based GPUs shipping anytime soon. Nvidia Pascal and AMD Polaris 10 / 11 will stick with GDDR5 memory for the time being.

    The 2nd generation High Bandwidth Memory (HBM 2.0) for high-end GPUs might happen in very late Q4 2016 but realistically it probably won't ship until 2017 in any volume.
    The first card that we expect supporting this feature might be the Greenland, a card that AMD might end up calling Vega. Even according Radeon Technology Group's official GPU roadmap, Vega / Greenland now look like a 2017 product, or at very best, late 2016 card. Nvidia might make the HBM 2.0 version of the Titan card, but we don’t expect to see a Geforce GTX based on Pascal GPU and HBM 2.0 coming to the market this year.


    We managed to talk to some of the memory manufactures and they told us that HBM 2.0 is very limited in supply, and limited supply makes things expensive.
    It seems that GPUs of 2016, including the new AMD Polaris and the new Geforce, will be stuck with GDDR5 and in best case scenario with GDDR5X from Micron. The word on the street is that both Geforce GTX based on Pascal and AMD/RTG's Polaris 10 / Ellesmere and Polaris 11 / Baffin might launch at Computex during last days of May or early June 2016.

    Parece que HBM 2.0 e novos GPUs para 2016 não vai acontecer, será interessante ver o que AMD e nVidia vão fazer para contornar esta questão.
