    Samsung Gear S2

Can Samsung Gear S2 challenge Apple Watch When It Is Unveiled In September?

Previously, we revealed details related to Samsung’s Galaxy Gear A, but now it looks like this wearable is not going to be the only one to be released by the company. During Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ announcement, the company’s executives also showcased Gear S2, a wearable that is going to be unveiled in Berlin during the month of September. Since Galaxy Gear A will be running Samsung’s Tizen platform, we believe that Gear S2 will also be running the firm’s own mobile operating system.

Gear S2 From Samsung Could Feature Calling And Wireless Connectivity Features When It Gets Unveiled Later In The Year

Engadget reports that although Samsung did not specify details concerning its upcoming wearable, we believe that the gadget will be incorporated with some really impressive features. In order to challenge Apple Watch (which does not possess a call feature), Gear S2 could be assimilated with an option that will allow users to make calls effortlessly from their device, without actually having their smartphones to complete this function.

Additionally, Samsung might also be looking to place better hardware specifications in an effort to raise the bar when comparing its Gear S wearable. While the company’s previous wearable did sport an 802.11 n Wi-Fi adapter coupled with a Bluetooth 4.1 module, we expect that Gear S2 is going to sport an 802.11 ac Wi-Fi adapter, along with a 4G modem for additional wireless connectivity purposes.

Since users have to carry around their mobile devices in order for messages and other notifications to show up on the device, it is only fitting that Samsung would want Gear S2 to exceed the capabilities of Apple Watch. Keep in mind however, there were absolutely no hardware specification details revealed about the wearable, so we are going to have to wait for the device to show up at IFA 2015, where we can get a good look of what to expect from Samsung’s Gear S2.

Samsung Recruits Fashion Models To Showcase Sleek, Round Gear S2 Smartwatch

Samsung still isn't ready to launch its next smartwatch, the Gear S2, though it did make sure to tease everyone with a couple of revealing images tossed into a promotional "Lookbook" of mobile devices. Most of the pages are filled with photos of the company's just announced Galaxy S6 Edge+ and Note5 devices, but the round smartwatch is clearly visible on the wrists of fashion models in two of the stills.

You may know the Gear S2 as the Gear A or its codename Orbis. All three monikers refer to the same device, which Samsung designed to make a fashion statement. According to the commentary in the Lookbook, Samsung wanted to take a classic design and spruce it up for the modern era, and then combine it with the latest tech. Form meets function, in other words.

"This season, Samsung takes a brave step forward by reimagining the classic circular watch, infusing it with functional technology and a touch of creativity," Samsung says. "This new wearable device is a testament of Samsung's continual heritage as a wild innovator -- creating a stunningly unique experience inspired by fashion history."

The focus on fashion isn't surprising, given Samsung's history. Taking a page from Apple, Samsung sparked renewed interest in its struggling Galaxy phone line by switching from plastic construction to a premium design, as showcased by the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. Even though the premium digs came at the expense of conveniences like a removable battery and microSD card slot, consumers reacted positively to the new lineup.

Despite the big focus on aesthetic design, Samsung isn't ignoring the tech side. The Gear S2 is will be powered by Samsung's own 1.2GHz Exynos 3472 dual-core processor with Mali-400 MP4 GPU and 768MB of RAM. It will also feature 4GB of built-in storage, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, a bunch of sensors, and a 250 mAh battery.

Samsung’s Apple Watch-Fightin’ Gear S2 Smartwatch Paraded In Fresh Video Teaser

We first got a quick glimpse of the upcoming Gear S2 smartwatch at Samsung’s Unpacked event for the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ last week. As the days progressed, the round-faced smartwatch showed up again in Lookbook, where it was paraded around by fashion models.
Now, were getting perhaps our best look yet at Samsung’s Apple Watch killer in a 30-second teaser video. Gone is the rectangular display that has dominated Samsung’s previous smartwatch efforts; in its place is a fully circular display (flat tires need not apply here). Compared to the last smartwatch that Samsung released — the Gear S — before going on a lengthy hiatus, the Gear S2 is a breath of fresh air when it comes to looks. It also serves as a stark contrast to the Apple Watch, which has adopted a rectangular display that is more efficient at displaying information and notifications, but is arguably not as stylish as a more traditional round watchface.

As the video quickly bounces through shots of the interface, you’ll notice a number of built-in apps including a stop watch, fitness tracking, a heart rate monitor, messaging and even phone capabilities. You’ll also notice that the Gear S2 makes use of round icons — something that many observers in tech circles have used as evidence that Samsung is copying the look and feel of watchOS on the Apple Watch. However, anyone that has used Samsung’s Tizen OS knows that round app icons have been staple long before the Apple Watch became a [public] reality last September. It would make sense that a Tizen-based smartwatch would use circular app icons, so we’re going to have to give Samsung a pass on the “theft” accusation.

As for the hardware lurking beneath, the Gear S2 will reportedly be powered by a 1.2GHz Exynos 3472 processor paired with 768MB of RAM. Also on tap are 4GB of internal storage, a 250 mAh battery, Bluetooth 4.1, 802.11n Wi-Fi and of course optional 3G cellular call capabilities.

With that being said, we should learn more about the Gear S2 at this year’s IFA consumer electronics conference which will take place early next month in Berlin, Germany.

Samsung Gear S2 Smartwatch With Circular Display Officially Announced, Here Are The Details

After dropping an initial teaser at its Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ event this month, Samsung has officially taken the wraps off its new smartwatch, the Gear S2.

Samsung Is Starting Fresh With The Gear S2 And Gear S2 Classic

Despite having a number of smartwatches in the market, and also calling itself a pioneer in that arena, the Korean giant wasn’t able to make a dent in the wearable space the way it had hoped. But today, with the official announcement of the Gear S2, Samsung has laid in all its cards to change all that.
Samsung’s latest smartwatch has a round / circular face, and is available in two options – Gear S2 and the Gear S2 classic. Where the Gear S2 is a vanilla offering tailored to those who are always on the go and prefer a minimal design, the classic however, is aimed towards users who want a more premium timepiece, as it comes in a black finish, topped with a matching genuine leather band.
On the dimensions front, the Samsung Gear S2 is just a mere 11.2mm thick. On the display end, the Gear S2 has a 1.2-inch Super AMOLED panel with a resolution of 360×360 pixels. And if you do the math, that’s 302 pixels per inch, which is more than adequate for a display of this size.
The device even features a rotating bezel for interacting with the UI, sort of like an answer to the Apple Watch’s Digital Crown. And on the side of the device are two buttons, Home and Back.
Powering the little device is a 1 GHz dual-core processor, which should be sufficient enough to keep things ticking over. While under the hood, the Gear S2 will ship with 4GB of internal storage, topped off with 512MB of RAM.
If you’re planning on taking a shower with the Gear S2, then Samsung has you covered in that regard as well, as the device is IP68 certified for water and dust resistance.
Coming to the sensors the device packs, users can expect the usual suspects, such as an accelerometer, gyroscope, and of course, a heart rate sensor. Apart from that, the Korean giant has even tossed in a barometer and an ambient light sensor too.
Samsung also says that the device comes with NFC on board for mobile payments.

On the battery front, the Gear S2 will last for 2 to 3 days on a single charge, depending on the model you’re getting, such as the regular one or the 3G enabled one, as the latter has a slightly larger battery at 300mAh. And yes, the 3G model doesn’t need a phone to make calls, in case you’re wondering.
    From Samsung:
Users can stay connected with at-a-glance notifications to check calendars, e-mails, news and can even send important texts directly from their wrist. Users can choose the Gear S2 with 3G connectivity which incorporates the first-ever e-SIM with voice capability, to perform quick functions without being closely tethered to their phone.
The full list of specs of the device are as follows:
Gear S2 and Gear S2 classic

    Gear S2 With 3G

Samsung says that the Gear S2 will be available in two color options – dark gray case with a dark gray band and silver case with a white band. Whereas the Gear S2 classic will be available in a black case with a leather band.
The company hasn’t said a word in terms of pricing, but said that the “Samsung Gear S2 and Gear S2 classic will be showcased for full media hands-on and more applications will be demonstrated with partners at Tempodrum, Berlin on September 3.”

Hands On With The Samsung Gear S2 And Gear S2 Classic Smartwatches

Samsung announced their latest smartwatches a couple of days ago, the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic. We’ve got all of the initial details and imagery from Samsung’s release posted here if you’d like to check them out. To quickly reiterate some particulars, both of these smartwatches feature 11.4mm thin casings and a 1.2-inch, 360x360 displays that are complete circles, unlike the “flat tire” displays used on the Moto360. At the heart of the Gear S2 is an undisclosed Samsung-sourced 1GHz dual-core processor paired with 512MB of RAM. NFC technology is incorporated into the watches as well, which will support Samsung Pay in the near future. The Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classis are IP68 certified for dust and water resistance as well. And there will be versions with and without integrated 3G connectivity.

The Samsung Gear S2 Classic (left) and Gear S2 (right)

Today we get to take things a step further and show you these two new devices in action. We recently had the chance to sit down with Samsung and get our hands on the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic, and shot some video of them at work. Take a look...

The Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic are fundamentally very similar. Their internals are the same, but the external materials and styling cues differ. What really stands out on both devices, however, is the work Samsung put into the new rotary UX.

The Gear S2 features a rotating ring around the display, in addition to a two buttons at the side—intelligently located at 2 and 4 o’clock to minimize accidental actuation – for navigating the various menus and apps. Turn the dial to the left to access notifications, and to the right to access other information and widgets. In addition to manually accessing notification and apps, however, Samsung also allows user customization of some watch-faces to show personalized info and offer some dynamic watch-faces with notifications presented on-screen at all time, along with the time.

Using the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic was quite intuitive and easy even after only a few moments. We only had a short time with the devices, but our initial reaction to the interface is extremely positive. Build quality and tolerances also seem to be excellent.

Above is an array of images with various watch-faces and Gear S2 models in action. Samsung will be offering a variety of band and color options, and both devices include minimalist wireless chargers that also act as simple stands. And battery life should fall somewhere in the 1 – 2 day range, depending on how heavily the watches are used.

Pricing and availability information wasn’t initially available, but we’re told the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic will be available soon. Stay tuned for HotHardware for a full review as soon as the devices are ready for prime time.

Watch Out Google, Samsung Also Eying iPhone Support For Lauded Gear S2 Smartwatch

The first “modern” smartwatch to capture the attention of techies around the world was no doubt the Motorola Moto 360. You can chalk up the excitement surrounding the Moto 360 to its mostly rounded display and dashing good looks. The Moto 360 then had to take a backseat to the hype surrounding the Apple Watch, but now there’s a newcomer that’s not only grabbing attention from Android users, but also those in the Apple camp.
Samsung has managed to create the Gear S2 that not only includes a fully circular display (unlike the “flat tire” effect seen on the Moto 360), but includes relatively slim bezels and a thin profile. The Gear S2 Classic steps things up a notch by taking on a more traditional wristwatch appearance while still retaining all of the smartwatch capabilities.

We already know that the Gear S2 will work with more than just Samsung smartphones (a cruel side effect with previous Samsung smartwatches running Tizen), as support has been extended to quite a long list of competing Android smartphones that are running Android 4.4 or later and have at least 1.5GB of RAM. Now, Samsung is looking to extend that support to iPhone users, but it could be a challenge to implement.
“We are looking at possibilities to open it up to iOS,” said a Samsung spokesperson in an interview with Digital Spy at IFA 2015. “Because we opened it up to Android, we are looking at this.”
If you recall, Google just recently extended support for newer Android Wear smartwatches to iPhones (going back as far as the iPhone 5). This was no easy undertaking, obviously, for Google, but the search giant at least has a lot of familiarity with iOS and its APIs — Samsung, not so much. Google also has a whole smorgasbord of apps available for iOS (Gmail, Calendar, Chrome, etc.) which can pass along detailed information to Android Wear devices.
Samsung definitely has a lot of work to do to enable support for iPhone users with the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic, but it may be well worth it for Apple fans that aren’t exactly bowled over by the Apple Watch’s rectangular display.

Samsung Gear S2 Smartwatch Will Be iPhone Compatible, Confirms The Company

In case you’re wondering whether or not the Samsung Gear S2 will be iPhone compatible, then you’ll be pleased to learn that the company has confirmed that it’s looking into the possibility at opening up the device to Apple’s mobile platform.

The Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch is the first ever wearable from the Korean giant that’s ‘done right.’ The previous wearables coming out from the company were a bit of a dud, considering that they needed a Samsung Galaxy smartphone to work, but this around, the Korean electronics giant opted to do things differently and has opened up a bit more in the Android space, by making its device compatible with a huge range of smartphones. And in case you’re wondering whether or not the Gear S2 will support the iPhone, then you’ll be pleased to learn that it will.
According to a Samsung employee, whose identity hasn’t been disclosed, had this to say on the matter:
We are looking at possibilities to open it up to iOS. Because we opened it up to Android, we are looking at this.
So, at one point in time, you can expect the Gear S2 to work with your iPhone, and you have a whole heap of wearables to choose from already if you plan on sticking to Apple’s platform.

It’s also worth mentioning here that the Gear S2 runs on top of Samsung’s proprietary software, Tizen, and not Android Wear, which many manufacturers have started to embrace. And recently, Google opened up Android Wear to iPhone users just under a week back, making Apple’s mobile platform the only one which supports the majority of smartwatches out there in the tech space – Android Wear, Microsoft Band, Pebble, Tizen, etc.

When will the Samsung Gear S2 add iPhone support is anyone’s guess, and we’re sure the Korean giant will definitely make its plans public in the days to come. After all, iOS is a huge market, and making accessories compatible with it seems like a logical step for any company that is looking to boost the sales of its products.
Whenever Samsung has more word on the matter, we’ll bring it forth to our readers. Till then, just sit tight and wait it out. And oh, will you be buying a Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch if it gains iPhone support? You know where to drop your thoughts and opinions; that’s right, in the comments section below.

For those wanting to call from their smartwatch, Galaxy Gear S2 is incorporated with its own cellular radio just like its predecessor and it has a 1.2 inch AMOLED display. Samsung Gear S2 Smartwatch Review: Tizen Excels

    Gear S2 Intro and Specifications

The nascent smartwatch market has delivered a number of near-winners thus far. The Apple Watch and Microsoft Band, for example, are better-than-average fitness trackers and smart timepieces. The 2nd generation Moto 360 is impressive from an aesthetics standpoint. The Huawei Watch hits the mark for those looking for a good-looking, functional, timepiece that also happens to feature smartphone notifications. And then, there's Samsung.

In a bid to be first to market, the original Galaxy Gear was launched with a less-than-optimal design, poor battery life, and a camera that wasn't very useful. That was just over two years ago though, and the company has since popped out a multitude of wearables since. The Galaxy Gear 2 eventually arrived, as did the Gear Fit and the original Gear S. For one company to have three distinct wearables selling simultaneously makes you wonder if it were just testing multiple designs to see which would take off.

Whatever the case may be, we've now got the Gear S2. It's a clean, no-nonsense looking device, which runs Tizen rather than Android Wear. It follows the design language of a conventional timepiece (very much unlike the Dick Tracy-styled Galaxy Gear), which means that its primary rivals in terms of aesthetics are the Huawei Watch and Moto 360. The other notable inclusion on the Gear S2 is the innovative control mechanism. Though there's a capacitive touchscreen, the primary input device is a rotating ring around the bezel. It'll spin left or right to trigger different screens, and once you've found the information you're after, tapping the screen becomes the next step. In terms of its specifications, here's what you'll find under the hood...
Apple and Samsung have already had their annual smartphone launch parties, and now, Motorola is taking its turn. For the third year in a row, a new Moto X has arrived on the test bed. There's no mistaking the design -- visual cues that created the silhouette of the original still remain on the Moto X Pure Edition, but it's clear that the company is evolving its flagship phone based on market demands. For instance, the 5.7-inch Quad HD (2,560 x 1,440) display would've been viewed as monstrous in 2013, but today, it feels wholly natural. Moto has also included a few useful extras like TurboPower (which injects 10 hours of life into the phone after just 15 minutes on the charger) and a water-repellant nano-coating.

The Moto X Pure Edition (also known as the Moto X Style in non-U.S. markets) has plenty of competition, but in some ways, it exists in a niche of its own. Samsung and Apple have long since garnered the lion's share of mobile profits in North America, but those flagships start at around $649 and peak at nearly $1,000 with a halfway decent amount of internal storage.

Apple's unlocked 128GB iPhone 6s Plus goes for $949 exclusive of tax, while Samsung's 64GB Galaxy Note 5 checks in at around $800. Rather than bark up that tree, Moto is hawking a great phone, completely unlocked, at a price point that's downright cheap in comparison. While the $399 base price only includes 16GB of storage, even the 64GB model only costs $499. What's that coin get you? Let's take a look.

Rather than bark up that tree, Moto is hawking a great phone, completely unlocked, at a price point that's downright cheap in comparison. While the $399 base price only includes 16GB of storage, even the 64GB model only costs $499. What's that coin get you? Let's take a look.

Pretty much every smartwatch on the market retails for between $250 and $350, with surprisingly little variation in terms of innards and functions in the current generation. What we're left with is a battle of minutiae. So, without further delay, let's see how Samsung's latest stacks up.

Samsung's new bio-processor tracks your health in 5 different ways

Samsung has a new "bio-processor" that's able to track up to five different biometrics at any one time to help keep tighter tabs on your state of health.

The little processor that they've developed is designed to be able to give more metrics and more data to the user. It'll support biometric impedance analysis, ECG readings, skin temperature, galvanic response and a whole lot of other metrics so that you can actually have real measurements of important health data. This should be far more efficient and accurate than any previous non-specific processors for the job. Theoretically at least.

Could you imagine being able to predict a heart attack before it gets to a critical point, letting you get to a doctor well before any permanent damage. That would be a very useful feature. Samsung envisions being able to put this type of technology in their future wearables like the Gear Watch S2.

Samsung Gear S2 Classic Gains Platinum And Rose Gold Options, iOS Compatibility Confirmed

It looks like there’s some big news to discuss with regards to Samsung’s Gear S2 Classic smartwatch. First and foremost, Samsung is adding two more finishes to complement the existing black metal finish: Platinum and Rose Gold.
These finishes will be platings on top of the existing stainless steel housing, which should put it more in line with the similar Rose Gold and Gold finishes available on the Apple Watch Sport. In addition to the new two new finishes, Samsung is also introducing a number of new watch bands constructed of leather, steel and even nylon.
But perhaps the biggest news to come out of CES pertaining to the Gear S2 (both the standard and Classic models) is that Samsung will bring support for iOS. Samsung first expressed its wish to support iOS in September, shortly after the launch of the Gear S2. “We are looking at possibilities to open it up to iOS,” said a Samsung spokesperson at IFA 2015. “Because we opened it up to Android, we are looking at this.”
Samsung today officially confirmed that it is working on a companion app that would make Apple’s iPhone compatible with the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic. For those iPhone fans that prefer the looks of a round watch over the rectangular shape of the Apple Watch, the Gear S2 makes a pretty compelling alternative.
But be forewarned; just as Android Wear support for the iPhone is extremely limited in what it can do (at least compared to an Apple Watch paired with an iPhone), the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic will likewise not be fully integrated with iOS. We’ll have to stay tuned for additional details from Samsung on which iPhone models and which features will be supported. However, by that time, Apple may have already released a second generation Apple Watch — but we’re not holding our breath on Apple releasing a smartwatch with a circular face.

Samsung activity tracker with Gear S2 styling leaked in photos

Multiple images of a new Samsung wearable have surfaced, revealing what appears to be an activity tracker built in the image of the Gear S2.
The Samsung SM-R150 (Samsung will almost certainly revise this codename) looks to feature the same circular watch face and rotatable bezel from the aforementioned Gear S2. SamMobile (who got the images from Tizen Cafe) believes the wearable could be based on Samsung's new Bio Processor, the same one featured in the S-Patch from CES.
Based on the images, one could surmise that the SM-R150 will feature improved heart rate tracking (possibly via a separate device that attaches to the shirt over your chest). Functions to keep track of water intake, measure body fat and count repetitions during a workout are also illustrated in the photos.
This is not the first time we've heard of Samsung's new activity tracker. Back in November, word got out that Samsung was working on an entry-level activity tracker codenamed SM-R150 (called Triathlon internally). At the time, it was suggested that the device could compete with the $15 Xiaomi Mi Band but given the leaked photos, I suspect it'll cost a bit more than that.
No word yet on when Samsung plans to announce the device. Considering Mobile World Congress 2016 is a little over a month away, it's a safe bet that Samsung will save the wearable to unveil in Barcelona.

Samsung’s Rose Gold Plated Gear S2 Classic Smartwatch Makes Timely Global Debut With $500+ MSRP

Earlier this month at CES, Samsung announced two new additions to its well-received Tizen-based Gear S2 smartwatch family. While Samsung launched its latest, circular-faced smartwatch family with the sporty $299 Gear S2 and more stately $349 Gear S2 Classic, the expanded lineup now includes two new color hues for the Galaxy S2 Classic: Rose Gold and Platinum. These new smartwatches, which are labeled as Gear S2 Classic New Edition, feature plated finishes layered atop the Gear S2 Classic’s stainless steel housing. The 18K Rose Gold model comes with an ivory leather band, while the Platinum version is offset nicely with a black leather band. But that’s not all, Samsung has also thrown in some new watch faces that are exclusive to the Gear S2 Classic New Edition featuring artwork from Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. And in a nod to Apple, which added a foot-tappin’ Mickey Mouse as a watch face for its Apple Watch, Samsung has also dipped into the cartoon well with infinitely cooler Snoopy watch faces.

The Gear S2 Classic New Edition is launching worldwide today, but the folks in China will have the first shot at purchasing the new smartwatches. The rest of the world can expect to see the smartwatches in the coming weeks. Although we don’t have any official word yet on U.S. pricing, some sleuthing has uncovered that the Rose Gold and Platinum Gear S2 Classic New Edition are up for pre-order in Europe for €480 (around $520).
For comparison, the 18-karat gold Apple Watch Edition (solid gold, not plated) starts at $10,000. However, Apple also makes an anodized gold version of its aluminum-bodied Apple Watch Sport which is priced from $349.

Samsung’s Platinum And Rose Gold Gear S2 Classic Smartwatches Available Friday For $450

In late January, Samsung kicked off the global launch of the Gear S2 Classic New Edition smartwatch. The name is defiantly a mouthful, but it merely represents two new finishes available on Samsung’s range-topping Tizen-based smartwatch: Rose Gold and Platinum. Although both new smartwatches went up for pre-order in Europe with a $500+ price tag, folks in the United States won’t pay nearly as much. Samsung is pricing both the Rose Gold and Platinum smartwatches at $449.99, which represent a $100 premium over the standard stainless steel Gear S2 Classic (cheaper still is the standard Gear S2 which retails for $299).
The Gear S2 Classic in 18k Rose Gold will ship with an ivory-colored genuine leather band while the Platinum model will ship with a stealthy black genuine leather band. Besides the two new finishes, everything else that we love about the Gear S2 Classic remains the same including the 360x360, fully circular Super AMOLED display, 1GHz dual-core processor, 4GB of internal storage, and 250mAh battery which lasts two to three days per charge.

“At Samsung, we’re all about designing technology that integrates seamlessly with the lives of our consumers,” said Gary Riding, Samsung’s SVP of Mobile Computing. “These stunning new finishes offer consumers a way to complement their personal styles – while the revolutionary technology of the wearable complements their increasingly active, connected lives.”
The Rose Gold and Platinum models of the Gear S2 Classic will be available from the usual suspects like Best Buy and Amazon.com starting tomorrow. It will also be available direct from Samsung.com and interestingly enough from Macy’s.

Samsung Gear S2 Classic 3G Shipping With World's First GSMA-Certified eSIM

We first got a taste of programmable sims when Apple launched the iPad Air 2 in 2014. The proprietary “Apple SIM” allows users to change their wireless carrier at any time via software without having to swap out physical SIM cards. Samsung, however, is going the industry-standard route by adopting the eSIM specification brought forth by the GSMA.
The first product to ship with the new eSIM will be Samsung’s upcoming Gear S2 Classic 3G smartwatch (phew, say that three times fast). Although Samsung has yet to provide any official specs or images of the Gear S2 Classic 3G, we can’t imagine that it will stray too far from the handsome, traditional looks of the Gear S2 Classic while adopting the calling capabilities of its Gear S2 3G sibling.
“We are excited to introduce Samsung Gear S2 3G classic as not only a starting point for more devices to be connected globally, but as a step forward in our commitment to support the development of the IoT market,” said Yunsang Park, SVP of R&D Office, Mobile Communications Business for Samsung.

The GSMA indicates that the eSIM specification is initially targeting wearables like smartwatches and fitness bands in addition to tablets. You might ask, well what about smartphones? The GSMA will finalize an eSIM spec for smartphones in June.
The use of eSIMs will not only make changing wireless carriers easier for consumers, but it also allows manufacturers to develop lighter and smaller devices that don’t have to be designed to accommodate a physical SIM. As manufacturers strives to make thinner and lighter devices and add Internet connectivity to the tiniest of devices courtesy of the IoT movement, this is a much-need breakthrough.
“This is the only common, interoperable and global specification that has the backing of the mobile industry and lets consumers with a mobile subscription remotely connect their devices to a mobile network,” said GSMA CTO Alex Sinclair. “This new specification gives consumers the freedom to remotely connect devices, such as wearables, to a mobile network of their choice and continues to evolve the process of connecting new and innovative devices.”
Hardware manufacturers backing the eSIM spec include Huawei, LG, Microsoft, and Samsung, while chipset vendors include big names like STMicroelectronics and Qualcomm. And you’ll also be happy to learn that all four major U.S. wireless carriers — Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint — are also onboard.
