    Huawei MateBook

Huawei Reported To Be Working On Its Own iPad Pro And Surface Pro 4 Competitor

Last time, we reported that Huawei was working on its own notebook in order to take on Xiaomi’s upcoming laptop, and according to the leaked images, the manufacturer was going to name it as the Huawei MateBook. This sounds awfully familiar to Apple’s MacBook (particularly when the ‘B’ has been capitalized). However, there are going to be some differences between the manufacturer’s upcoming slate, as you will see shortly.

Huawei MateBook Could Feature A Dual-Boot OS Along With A Stylus

According to the latest report, Huawei MateBook is going to be running a dual-OS, indicating that the slate will be capable of running both Android (presumably Android Lollipop and later versions) and Windows 10. While this will be a useful feature, the actual information that has gotten into our heads is the type of hardware that will be running inside it; Huawei has been really keen on using its own developed hardware as far as mobile chipsets is concerned. The latest SoC that the company has incorporated inside its flagship smartphone, Mate 8 was Kirin 950, and we are assuming that it is what will most likely be powering on the company’s MateBook, or maybe something else entirely.
If not, then it is possible that the company will be using one of Intel’s mobility processors, perhaps a previous generation one in order to keep the costs low and target a larger audience, which is the same approach that Xiaomi has taken. One of the most notable changes in the upcoming slate is that it has been reported to sport a stylus, which gives us the impression that the company might very well be taking on Apple’s iPad Pro and Microsoft’s Surface Pro. This latest insight means that the tablet could have a large screen size, and a keyboard accessory to go along with it for increased productivity.

With such a product, Huawei is definitely going to be charging top dollar, and we suspect that while it may be cheaper than an iPad Pro or Surface Pro 4, it will still carry a hefty price tag. There was also a report suggesting that Huawei was also working on its own custom developed GPU, but we doubt that it will find its way in the tablet. For now, this is all the information that we have to go on and once we come across more details, we will certainly be updating you on this front.
What do you guys think of the machine that Huawei is working on? Let us know your thoughts.

Huawei announces the MateBook, their Surface competitor

Huawei today announced their own take on convertible PC market today, expanding into the Windows realm of devices while bringing their mobile expertise to bear. The MateBook is a 12-inch Windows 10 hybrid tablet designed to one-up Microsoft's own premium Surface line.

Their first foray into laptop territory is an attractive looking device at only 6.9mm thick and a surprising 1.4 pounds. The 12-inch screen is slightly smaller physically and in resolution than the current Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book though it boasts the same resolution of 2160x1440, usable aspect ratio and size as the Surface Pro 3. On such a small(ish) device, the pixel density, at 216 ppi, should be high enough for all but the most hawk-eyed of individuals. The screen they're using will have 85% of the NTSC color gamut.

The device is a true hybrid with a sturdy looking keyboard cover that doubles as a stand when you actually want to use it as a traditional laptop. Being their first computer, this might not initially tick all the boxes, but it seems to have learned from the mistakes of past hybrid makers. Included is a novel active pen and also has a laser pointer in one end to annoy co-workers.

The MateBook is powered by Intel's Core M processors from the current generation M3 through the M7. They're also offering configurations with 4GB or 8GB of RAM and storage that ranges from 128GB to 512GB. Curiously this is one of their more premium designs, something not seen in the US at all up until this point. It seems that the design win with a Google Nexus device has made their brand a household name.

They're using their tablet know-how to ensure that the minuscule device is actually able to stay cool. An 8-layer heat conductive structure should help it run cooler than the competition. Battery life is quoted as a cool 9 hours while doing typical light office work and up to 29 hours if you're using it as a music player.

The lowest end M3 model with 4GB fo RAM and a 128GB SSD will cost $699, while the top-end M7 with 8GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD will be $1599. It's looking, at first glance, to be quite the competitor. Let's just hope the keybaord dock is sufficiently rigid and works well on an actual lap.

Huawei Matebook, Surface Pro 4, iPad Pro: A Spec Comparison

With Huawei's new Matebook entering the 2-in-1 PC market, we take a closer look at how it stacks up against the likes of the Surface Pro 4 and the iPad Pro.
Surface Pro 4 iPad Pro Matebook

    Weight 766-786 g 723 g 640 g
    Price $899 - $2,199 ERP $799 - $1,079 $699 - $1,599
The displays on the three devices are fairly similar in terms of their size and pixel density. The iPad Pro has the highest resolution, followed closely by the Surface Pro 4, but the displays on these two devices are a few fractions of an inch larger than the Matebook, so the overall pixel density is quite close.
Huawei's Matebook scores a win for its lightweight design, which is 83g lighter than the iPad Pro, and at least 126g less than the Surface Pro 4.
The Matebook and Surface Pro 4 both have options for 4 GB and 8 GB of RAM, with higher end Surface Pro 4 models coming with 16 GB of RAM, giving it an edge over Huawei's 2-in-1. Apple hasn't released the details on how much RAM is inside of its iPad Pro, so we couldn't compare it to the other devices.
Microsoft offers the Surface Pro 4 with storage options up to 1 TB, which gives it an edge here too for users who need an abundant amount of storage. As these are small 2-in-1 PCs without a great deal of raw horsepower, it is likely that most users will be satisfied with the 128-512 GB of storage space offered on the other devices. But for users who do need the additional storage space inside of their 2-in-1, the Surface Pro 4 is the only viable option out of these three devices.
We couldn't find the exact details on the battery inside of all three devices, but each company claims their device lasts for 9 or 10 hours of use.
In terms of overall performance, the Surface Pro 4 likely holds the top position in the list here as well. The Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors offered on higher-end Surface Pro 4 models are more closely related to the mobile Intel 6th Gen Core (Skylake) CPUs used inside of laptops, while the Core-M SKUs are meant for tablets and other low-power portable devices. Apple's A9X SoC is an in-house developed architecture derived from ARM's processor technology, which means it is also targeted at low-power devices and should be notably below the mobile Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs used in the Surface Pro 4.
As the architecture inside of the Apple A9X and Intel's Core M radically differ from each other, it is impossible to really gauge their performance relative to each other without testing them firsthand, and we don’t have these devices to test at this time.
We also can't be sure about which device has the best graphics performance among the three. Given the slim size of the Matebook, it is probable that Huawei is using Intel's HD Graphics inside of its systems, but without exact details we can't make any assumptions. Apple hasn't revealed what GPU is being used inside of its A9X SoC either, although it is certainly designed by Imagination as part of its PowerVR line. Again, we cannot make a clear comparison.
Finally, in terms of price the Matebook is also slightly ahead of the competition. In its least expensive configuration, the Matebook includes 128 GB of storage, 4 GB of RAM and Intel's Core-M3 processor for just $699. Comparatively, to get 128 GB of storage space with essentially the same hardware setup from Microsoft in a Surface Pro 4, it would cost you $799. At the same time, Apple's iPad Pro with 128 GB of storage starts at $949.
Higher-end configurations of the Matebook do cost significantly more than the iPad Pro, but that further extends the storage space up to as much as 512 GB, while also increasing the amount of RAM and adding in faster processors.
Overall, none of these devices definitively beats out the others in terms of pricing, performance or features. In my opinion, the Matebook holds the biggest advantage over the others, because of the lower price point of some of its models, its size and weight. It may not have the most performance, but most people already have a more powerful laptop or desktop at their disposal if they needed something with more performance.
It also seems less likely that someone buying a 2-in-1 is after performance, so much as they are after the thin-lightweight form factor, high-resolution display and excellent battery life. Performance is important too, but all of these devices should give you an adequate web browsing, typing and instant messaging experience, so the Surface Pro 4's greater performance may help it attract only a small percentage of the 2-in-1 market.

Huawei will get only 400,000 Matebook shipments

Less than half of what was predicted
Huawei's MateBook 2-in-1 is not going to sell the 1-2 million units predicted.

According to Digitimes the most that the outfit can expect is 400,000 units, because the outfit is pushing the device in the high-end enterprise market instead of consumer segment.
Its sources claim that the Chinese vendor does not understand the notebook channel and business model and that it will need to conquer these issues in order to boost shipments.
Basically Huawei does well in mobile, but it is not approaching its channel correctly for a new entrant.
Most existing notebook brands have already been operating in the market for a long time, getting your foot in the door is tricky. The MateBook's pricing at US$699-1,599 takes it out of the hands of consumers.
The MateBook's has to compete with Lenovo, Asustek Computer and Acer's 2-in-1s and the device looks like Microsoft's Surface. It might do well in China but it has not got a hope in North America.
So while it not being the great white hope for Huawei it could still be a contender in the industry over the long term, Digitimes industry deep throats said.
