    Boa tarde,

MCSFT. Enough said.

PlayStation 4.5 rumored to be revealed before October

Yet another major publication adds its voice to the PlayStation 4.5 choir, further substantiating the rumors that Sony is preparing a powerhouse VR-ready PS4 that could push into 4K gaming.

According to new reports from The Wall Street Journal, Sony's new upgraded PlayStation 4.5 console will be announced before the console-powered PlayStation VR headset. That means we could expect the PS4.5 before October of this year, ahead of the $399 PSVR's official timed launch. WSJ further claims that the PS4.5 will be sold alongside the existing PS4 model, and that it'll be VR-ready right out of the box.

The publication goes on to say that the PlayStation 4.5 will be "backwards and forwards compatible", hinting that Sony will make two different iterations of upcoming games--a PS4.5 version and a regular PS4 flavor. Key developers are rumored to be already working on porting games to the PS4.5, The WSJ cites "people familiar with the matter" as their sources, echoing statements we've heard from Kotaku.

As for the validity of these claims, I couldn't see WSJ reporting on something like this if they didn't feel it was accurate. While Sony hasn't confirmed anything, we're betting the main core details are true--that Sony is making a PS4.5 that significantly boosts traditional 1080p gaming as well as upscaled 4K gaming/video and VR support--but the small details might be off the mark.

TweakTown's GPU editor Anthony Garreffa recently told me that if Sony released the PS4.5 before the holidays, the Japanese console-maker would completely smash Microsoft in every respect during the holiday season. While we may not see a release before the holidays, a reveal would prompt some sort of major response from Microsoft. Sony has banked quite a bit on the PlayStation brand, and it's fair to say that the company is going all-in to shake up the traditional console industry.

Since Microsoft is folding the Xbox ecosystem into PC gaming, it's only prudent that Sony follows up with a strike of their own, and this new hardware refresh could be the major edge that keeps them on top.

Sony will reportedly announce PS4K/PS4.5 before PSVR launch

This last week has been fairly hectic when it comes to Sony news. So far, we have had two reports claiming the existence of the PlayStation 4.5/PS4K, suggesting that Sony is planning a slightly beefed up version of its console with new 4K features. Now today, we have a third report claiming that this console will be announced this year before the launch of PlayStation VR in October.
This time, The Wall Street Journal is chiming in, citing sources “familiar with the matter”. Apparently Sony will be announcing its upgraded console before October but it is unknown at this point if it will be ready for E3. The new console is said to add more horsepower in hopes that developers can do more with PlayStationVR.

While some reports have claimed that Sony is also taking aim at 4K gaming with this new console, Digital Foundry spoke with its own sources and came to the conclusion that this is pretty unlikely for triple-A titles, which makes sense given that even high-end gaming PCs can struggle at Ultra-HD resolutions.
However, if the WSJ’s report is accurate, then Sony will be arming developers with the tools to create better games for virtual reality at a minimum of 60 frames per second, which could also mean that we will see more non-VR games running at higher frame rates at 1080p.

    Boa tarde,

    Cumprimentos.

PlayStation 4K /PS4.5 to be Announced Before PlayStation VR Launch – Will Deliver “High-End Gaming and VR Experience”

If the recent reports hold any weight, the days of waiting more than half a decade for up-to-date, more powerful video game consoles are coming to an end. Yet another source has confirmed the existence of a more powerful version of Sony’s eighth generation PlayStation 4 console, providing more details about the release date and features of the PlayStation 4.5 or PlayStation 4K as we know it. The latest report claims that Sony’s 4K gaming capable console will deliver “higher-end gaming experiences,” and players will get to hear about it from the officials “before the planned October release of the PlayStation VR.”

Yet Another Source Confirms a More Powerful 4K Gaming Capable PlayStation 4 Console – Expected to Debut Before PlayStation VR Launch in October

Unless you have been living under a rock, you would know that word on the block is that Sony is working to make 4K gaming on consoles a thing with an upgraded, more telling version of its PlayStation 4 system that will be powered by latest hardware. And now, there’s another source confirming the realness of the rumored PlayStation 4.5, or PlayStation 4K as it’s unofficially been dubbed. According to The Wall Street Journal (via GameSpot), “people familiar with the matter” say the new system will make a debut “before the planned October release of PlayStation VR” headset.
This latest report corroborates previous reports from Kotaku, which first brought this new and improved PlayStation 4.5 to light, reporting that it would come with an upgraded graphics card, which would allow for smoother performance, better graphics, and 4K resolution on games, and from Eurogamer, which “independently established that it’s real,” and is codenamed PlayStation 4K, further adding that it will almost certainly use “semi-custom versions of AMD’s CPU and GPU technology integrated into a single, console-friendly processor,” just like the current console.
READ Eurogamer Confirms PlayStation 4.5 Rumor, Referred to as PlayStation 4K

The latest report from WSJ claims that the new PlayStation 4 console will be capable of delivering “ultra-high definition resolution graphics,” and that “Sony’s goal with the upgraded PlayStation 4 console is to capture gamers willing to pay for a richer gaming environment, including a high-end virtual reality experience.” This apparently points towards Sony’s two-tier approach, which will likely see the current PlayStation 4 sold at a lower price than the upgraded version. Sony will also reportedly not let the new system create a division, and will offer exact same game library on both consoles.
    Advertisements

“Existing PlayStation 4 owners would need to buy the new model to take full advantage of the enhanced graphics and power,” the post on WSJ reads. “Though it is likely that the current model and the coming one would share the same software catalog.” Sony itself has admitted that its upcoming virtual reality gaming head-mounted display, which is powered by the company’s eighth generation console, may, in terms of quality, be inferior to Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, both of which need high-end PCs to run on. The PlayStation 4K would help shrink that gap, the report says.
As mentioned before, Sony will reveal the console before the launch of PlayStation VR. This claim can be backed up by a recently video published by Roster Teeth’s multimedia channel The Know, in which the team claimed that according to their sources, the Japanese platform holder will put PlayStation 4K /PlayStation 4.5 on store shelves during this Holiday season with a price tag of $400, which is tentative and can possibly change. Of course, true 4K gaming in that price section is unattainable. Sources have confirmed that while “the new console will output 4K image, it will uprise it from whatever native resolution a given game spits out.”
READ Rumor: Playstation 4.5 Release Date & Price Pinned Down

Based on all these reports, this is how I understand Sony’s plans: The Japanese platform holder is developing a new PlayStation 4 console, which will be released in time during the holiday season. The primary purpose of this new console will be to deliver an overall rich and immersive gameplay experience to PlayStation VR users. Current PlayStation 4 owners will, of course, not be able to enjoy the increased graphical power of the new console, but games won’t become exclusive and will continue to work on both consoles.
What do you think of PlayStation 4K/PlayStation 4.5 in light of all these reports? Would you be interested in upgrading for better graphics only, or will you buy it for its offerings with PlayStation VR? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

    More PlayStation 4.5 Details Emerge

Following rumours that Sony is working on a 4K version of the PS4 – nicknamed the PlayStation 4.5 – designed to fully exploit the PlayStation VR headset, the Wall Street Journal has effectively confirmed its existence, revealing that the PS4.5 would be released as early as October this year – alongside the PS4, rather than replacing it – and that it would not have any exclusive games or software.
“Existing PlayStation 4 owners would need to buy the new model to take full advantage of the enhanced graphics and power, though it is likely that the current model and the coming one would share the same software catalog,” according to “people familiar with the matter.”
According to the report, Sony would continue production of the standard PlayStation 4, but its presence next to its more powerful cousin would render it more like a budget model of PS4.
The anonymous sources also claim that the PlayStation 4.5 will be announced before the October release of PlayStation VR, meaning that it could be competing for attention with the Nintendo NX at this Summer’s E3 trade fair. If Microsoft gets a move on with its UWP upgrade initiative for Xbox One, 2016 could be pivotal year for the future of consoles, and usher in the death of five-year-plus console cycles.

Rumor – PS4.5 GPU 2X As Powerful & CPU Discussed; GOW4 & Deep Down Among Launch Titles

If some new PS4.5 rumors are to be believed, Sony’s PlayStation 4.5 (or PS4K as some are calling it) will have a GPU that is twice as powerful as the current PS4 GPU. Additionally, a new CPU is allegedly being discussed.

The rumors come from Neogaf user OsirisBlack, who states that the additional info comes from a meeting he attended. His post on the GAF forums was verified by Neogaf’s head moderator Bish before being approved. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the rumor is legit, but it does mean that OsirisBlack is considered as someone who could actually have access to the information provided.
    CPU, Price & Release date
OsirisBlack states that the price of Sony’s ‘upgraded’ console is currently $399.99. This is in line with our earlier post regarding the price and release date of the PS4.5. According to OsirisBlack though, a better CPU for the console is being discussed, which might have an impact on the console’s price. However, the price of the console will be no higher than $499.99. Interestingly, Sony would have no plans for any type of trade-in program for current PS4 owners. This might change in the future, however.
In terms of release date, he later added in a different post that a tentative “late Q1 2017” window was provided.
    GPU
During the meeting, it was stated that the GPU for the PS4.5 will be twice as powerful as the current PS4 GPU. The new GPU is said to be much faster, but a precise speed number wasn’t shared. They did confirm a higher clock speed, while being much smaller than the original PS4 GPU.
READ Sony Reportedly Making A 4K Gaming Capable Playstation 4 - PS4.5 Brings Upgraded Graphics & CPU Horsepower

    Blu-ray & 4K
    Advertisements

The PS4.5 is said to have a 4K Blu-ray player, and will upscale games that are not natively running at 4K resolution.
    Game performance & dev kits
As reported earlier, games developed specifically for the PS4.5 will work on the ‘original’ PS4, but with “considerable sacrifices made to performance”. At the moment of writing, some developers already have their hands on development kits for the ‘new’ console. Games in development will make direct use of the increased horsepower.
Current PS4 titles will be playable on the PS4.5, but won’t benefit from the higher specs. “Any benefits to older games would come via patch per game and per developer”, according to OsirisBlack. These patches are a possibility, but doubtful with the exception of a handful of games.
    PS4.5 & PSVR Launch titles

OsirisBlack writes that he was given a list of titles that will be available at launch that will directly take advantage of the PS4K with “significant” differences.
    PS4.5
    Deep Down
    God of War 4
    PSVR
    Eve Valkyrie
    Robinson
    GT Sport
The ‘list’ was not limited to the games above, but these titles stood out for the leaker.
What do you think of these ‘leaked’ details? Do you think they are legit, and what is your general take on these ‘upgraded’ consoles? Hit the comments below.

Sony may consider 2x GPU power for PS4.5/PS4K, launch in Q1 2017

We have been hearing a lot about the existence of a PS4.5/PS4K hardware refresh from Sony this last week or two but we hadn’t heard much about exact specifications until now. According to the latest rumours, Sony is currently considering building a new PS4 with a GPU that is two times as powerful as the one found in the current PS4, a higher tier CPU is also being considered though it could drive up the price a bit too high for Sony’s liking.
This information comes from a post on NeoGAF from someone claiming to be present at meetings with Sony discussing plans. This person’s identity has been ‘verified’ by NeoGaf’s moderator but obviously, they have remained anonymous to the rest of us.

The post says that the GPU is twice as powerful as a standard PS4 and this would push the price of the PS4 to $399.99. However, a more powerful CPU is also being considered right now, which means the PS4K or PS4.5 could end up costing as much as $499.99. The launch is apparently scheduled for Q1 2017 following an announcement prior to the release of PlayStation VR.
Other interesting bits of information include a 4K Blu-ray player and higher performance for PlayStation VR. There are also a few games already in development planned to take advantage of the new hardware including God of War 4, GT Sport, Deep Down, and Eve: Valkyrie. These games will have “significant” differences on the standard PS4 compared to the new one but the games will still run on both systems.

Here’s Why PS4K’s Ace Will Be HDR Support, More Than Any Resolution Boost

Ever since the leaks began around PS4K, there’s been a lot of speculation regarding this supposedly enhanced version of Sony’s PlayStation 4. While it’s not yet official by any means, there have been too many rumors from different sources not to believe that there’s something real behind it all.
However, the code name itself might lead some to believe that PS4K’s biggest achievement may be running games at 4K native resolution. This article looks into debunking such belief and showcasing the true ace in the hole of PS4K.

Even if the most recent rumor suggesting a GPU two times more powerful than PS4’s turned out to be true, we would still be quite far from the raw horsepower needed to render games natively at 4K.
The current version of Sony’s console outputs most games (unlike Microsoft’s Xbox One) at a native FullHD resolution, or 1920×1080 (1080P), which is equivalent to 2,073,600 pixels; conventional 4K (3840×2160), on the other hand, requires four times the number of pixels (8,294,400). Right now, there is no single GPU capable of handling 4K rendering in performance intensive games while maintaining 60 frames per second; it is speculated that the most powerful GPUs from AMD and NVIDIA of the upcoming generation, Polaris and Pascal, might be able to do so.
But those high-end graphics cards will cost $500/600 at release, and it’s a known fact that consoles use mid-range GPUs to keep the price down. A much more realistic goal would be to increase the native resolution from 1080P to 1440P (2560×1440), or 3, 686, 400 pixels. That would translate into a 77% increase over 1080P in terms of pixels and definitely something that a GPU twice as powerful as PS4’s could handle.
The 1440P native resolution would then be upscaled to 4K, of course, but don’t expect earth-shattering graphics improvements in this case scenario; in fact, some of the less tech savvy customers may barely notice it. Does that mean PS4K won’t have any appeal for enthusiasts? Not at all, as the biggest technical advancement may well be another one: HDR support.
High Dynamic Range rendering has been used in games for many years now, but display technology has severely limited its results until now. That’s because even the best HDTVs have been stuck with the Rec.709 standard, first approved in 1990. Now this is all changing thanks to the push for Rec.2020, approved in 2012 for UHDTVs (4K and 8K) and supported by the HDMI 2.0 standard. First of all, Rec.2020 says goodbye to interlacing, thus only allowing progressive scan frame rates.

More importantly for our topic, Rec.2020 is defined by a 10/12-bit color space whereas Rec.709 was limited to 8-bit. With the introduction of Wide Color Gamut support, we’ll be able to see over a billion possible colors with 10-bit while we have been stuck at 16 million with our current 8-bit displays.

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. In the one just above, Rec.709 is represented by the smaller triangle while Rec.2020 is the far bigger one inside the CIE 1931 curve of colors that humans can perceive.
Wide Color Gamut goes hand in hand with HDR. In fact, it is no coincidence that the HDMI 2.0a revision added HDR support and Polaris (the new AMD architecture upon which the PS4K’s GPU may be based) has been confirmed to have HDMI 2.0a support.
Those of you who followed CES 2016 closely already know that HDR had its heyday in Las Vegas this year. All of the major display manufacturers committed to the technology, while Netflix, Amazon, YouTube and Vudu have announced more HDR video content coming to their streaming services. But what is HDR, exactly?

It is the ability to display much brighter and much darker pixels whenever necessary, allowing for far more contrast between bright and dark spots in a scene than we’re used to. Rec.709 confined displays to a luminance between 0.1 to 100 nits, while Rec.2020 allows a much greater variance – from 0.0001 to 10.000 nits, in theory.

The slides above are taken from a Build presentation hosted by Microsoft. A very similar one took place at GDC 2016 and the content was essentially the same: Microsoft is a big believer in HDR and Wide Color Gamut support. According to their tests, it’s a more noticeable improvement to end users than 4K resolution and they will be adding support for both technologies to Windows 10 in 2017.
They aren’t the only ones, though. AMD itself made a big deal of their push for HDR during CES 2016 in what they called the Better Pixels Initiative.
A couple of the slides from that report will be quite useful once again. AMD went as far as saying that 1080P+HDR looks better than 4K+SDR (Standard Dynamic Range), as you can read below; of course, it goes without saying that 4K+HDR is the superior option.
Microsoft @GDC: UWP VSYNC Fix, Shader Model 6, HDR Support & Windows Pix Coming

The other slide is an example of SDR versus HDR. Given any source content, the difference between the two will be similar to the image below.

Of course, developers will have to make adjustments, but Microsoft said in the aforementioned Build presentation that it will be fairly trivial to add HDR & Wide Color Gamut support for those who are using a PBR pipeline. That’s because a lot of the HDR data is already being generated, it’s just not displayed; Microsoft estimates that the actual engineering work may be even less than a week.
The good news is that there won’t be any performance cost for games. The bad news is, as you should have guessed by now, that an HDR compatible display will be needed. In case you were planning to buy a 4K display right now by taking advantage of some particularly enticing offer, with the idea of being ready when the PS4K ships, don’t. As explained earlier in the article, despite the name that’s been circulating it is highly unlikely that games will be rendered natively at 4K resolution for obvious performance reasons and you would be left without the truly major advancements in graphics, HDR & Wide Color Gamut support.
You will be able to recognize displays that have both technologies if they sport the UHD Premium badge, which has been chosen by the UHD Alliance as the official label. To be thorough, there will be two UHD Premium standards: displays with 0.05-1000+ nits will be classified in the Standard 1, while those with 0.0005-540 nits will be in the Standard 2. That’s because LED displays allow for better peak brightness but less deep blacks (Standard 1), while the reverse is true for OLED displays (Standard 2).

PS4K is rumored to launch in Q1 2017, which is when many more UHD Premium displays will be available and also when Microsoft plans to deploy HDR & Wide Color Gamut support to Windows 10. Needless to say, Sony would gain a huge advantage in the console market among enthusiasts until Microsoft and Nintendo will be able to offer the same with their consoles.

PS4K would be a 'gigantic pain in the ass', says BioWare founder

If the rumors are true, Sony is planning on changing the entire console industry with a mid-cycle PS4 refresh. While consumers have been buzzing about the prospect, the idea of PS4K or PS4.5 isn't too enticing to BioWare.

"I'd say that'd be a gigantic pain in the ass that flies in the face of the purpose of consoles," BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk told GameSpot. "It's funny, there's actually some stories behind that. For example, the original Xbox...Microsoft actually had multiple different DVD drives. They didn't tell anyone that, but as a developer, you discovered that you have different performance, and sometimes you'd have these boxes of refurbished drives and different brands and different equipment. It caused incredible variability."

The BioWare co-founder continued by saying that upgraded console hardware would make developer's jobs more difficult and confusing, especially the modular PC-like hardware swapping that Xbox boss Phil Spencer teased. "The whole purpose of consoles is the set of requirements that you work against from a hardware perspective. To change that is complete lunacy."

As a seasoned industry vet, Zeschuk would know the ins and outs of the console market. If Sony does introduce a 4K-ready PlayStation 4.5 refresh, the Japanese console-maker would have to ensure the console could be properly scaled with existing games and game development tools, or devs would have to adjust their games accordingly. Since the PS4K is rumored to upscale existing PS4 content to 4K at 30FPS, I don't think devs have much to worry about.

The PS4 has been out for over two years, and devs are just now starting to unlock its potential, and it'd be absolutely crazy for Sony just to come along and slam the reset button on all that progress.

In any case, if the PlayStation 4K does exist, Sony will likely tease it at E3 2016 in June, and possibly unveil it at the Tokyo Game Show in September.
