After 3 Years, The Nintendo 3DS has Finally Been Hacked

http://cdn.eteknix.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Screen-Shot-2014-11-21-at-09.43.27.jpg

After 3 years of being available, the Nintendo 3DS has finally been exploited to run unofficial software or “homebrew”. The exploit itself was discovered in a pretty much unknown game available for the system – “Cubic Ninja”, a very poor, forgotten title that nobody really cared about prior to the discovery.
The game’s QR function contains a vulnerability that means it is able to run unsigned code, something very rare on a Nintendo system, as these things are typically hard to get by the company’s tough quality control testing.
The title has now skyrocketed in price on eBay and Amazon – a game that previously was available for around $1-2 is now averaging at about $40.
The game runs the ‘Homebrew Channel’, a piece of software akin to Cydia on iOS, that allows DS and 3DS owners to run pretty much anything they like on their console – the video bellow shows a specially made version of Minecraft running, a game that is not officially available for the 3DS.

Nintendo set to discontinue the 3DS XL in Japan (http://www.kitguru.net/desktop-pc/console-desktop-pc/matthew-wilson/nintendo-set-to-discontinue-the-3ds-xl-in-japan/)

It looks like Nintendo’s plans for ‘the new 3DS’ might be bigger than we thought as the company has announced that it will discontinue the 3DS XL in Japan following the launch of the handheld’s successor.
For those of you who missed the initial announcement, a few months back Nintendo revealed ‘the new 3DS’ (yes that is what they are calling it), the new handheld will replace the current 3DS with updated internals, a new screen and a tiny little second analog stick. Games created for the new 3DS won’t run on older models, technically making this a new generation handheld.
http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/New-3DS-Screenshot-01.jpg (http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/New-3DS-Screenshot-01.jpg)
The new 3DS has already launched in Japan and apparently, it is doing very well. According to Siliconera (http://www.siliconera.com/2014/11/30/nintendo-discontinue-old-nintendo-3ds-xl-model-japan/), which translated a post on Nintendo’s official Japanese website, the company will be “ending production soon” of the 3DS XL, although the smaller 3DS will be sticking around for a bit longer. The new model is due to arrive in Europe and the US some time next year although no exact date has been set.

Nintendo UK is removing Game Boy Tetris from the 3DS eShop in 2015

As confirmed by Nintendo's UK Twitter (https://twitter.com/NintendoUK/status/548795468831260672), the age-old classic Game Boy Tetris will be pulled from the eShop durng the last day of 2014.

http://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/4/2/42340_083_nintendo-removing-game-boy-tetris-3ds-eshop-2015.png

This marks the end of an era, with Tetris on the original Game Boy being a title that helped define handheld gaming globally and showcased exactly how exciting and awesome potable devices could be. If you ask anyone about a gaming title they might know, Tetris is always one of the first to mind - a timeless classic that still facilitates global competitions and events being conducted to this very day (http://tetrischampionship.com/).

There has been no confirmation from Nintendo America or other regions as to if this game will be pulled from the e-shelves in their respective regions. Some news outlets are speculating that this game was pulled due to Nintendo's recent 3DS release of Ubisoft's Tetris Ultimate. Currently avilable for the bargain price of $3.99, please don't let this news ruin your fun - go and pick yourself up a piece of gaming history. We really hope that Ubisoft isn't at fault for this ordeal, it certainly couldn't do too well in improving the current markets public opinion of the big-name developer.

Is anyone else reminded of the original PC Prince of Persia main screen when looking at the Tetris player select? Maybe it's the Persian-style background buildings.

Now that reminds me, I really need to dust off my SNES and have a quick game of Tetris Attack (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetris_Attack) - my personal favorite in the series.

US and UK release date for ‘The New 3DS XL’ announced (http://www.kitguru.net/desktop-pc/console-desktop-pc/matthew-wilson/us-and-uk-release-date-for-the-new-3ds-xl-announced/)

Nintendo Direct just finished up earlier today so there are a fair few announcements hitting the web right now. One of the bigger things to be announced is the release date for the ‘New 3DS XL’ outside of Japan. The hand held console will launch on the 13th of February, following a successful launch in Japan.
A smaller version of the new 3DS will also launch in the UK but the US will only be getting the XL version. Both versions feature Nintendo’s take on a second analog stick, a more powerful CPU, bigger battery and built in NFC support for Amiibos.
http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/3DS_678x452.jpg (http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/3DS_678x452.jpg)
Games made specifically for the ‘new’ 3DS won’t work on older 3DS models. However, the new hand held will be backwards compatible with old 3DS games. So far, only one game has been announced specifically for the new model, Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, which launches in April.
The updated consoles already launched in Japan and Australia last year, while the US and UK have had to wait a little longer. Exact pricing has yet to be confirmed but last week Nintendo sold off a limited number of new 3DS models for £180 each in the UK.
Those of you planning to buy one will also have to budget for a charger as Nintendo does not bundle those in the box. The device will also be region locked, so you won’t be able to play any imported games.

A new Fire Emblem game will be coming to the 3DS (http://www.kitguru.net/gaming/matthew-wilson/a-new-fire-emblem-game-will-be-coming-to-the-3ds/)

There is a lot of Nintendo news hitting the web today thanks to the Nintendo Direct Conference, despite the ‘new 3DS XL’ coming out in the EU and US next month, (http://goo.gl/opMF07) new games for the now ‘old’ 3DS are still being announced. The developers of the highly praised Fire Emblem: Awakening, will return with a new game this year.
No title or release date has been given yet but the game will run on the ‘new 3DS’, the old 3DS and the 2DS. Some JRPG development veterans will also be returning with Kozaki Yusuke focussing on art direction and Shin Kibayashi as the game writer, who had previously worked on the Fatal Frame series.
http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/2015-01-14-090209-greenshotjpg-544c59_960w-e1421246901377.jpg (http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/2015-01-14-090209-greenshotjpg-544c59_960w-e1421246901377.jpg)
Aside from this, details are thin, we don’t even know how far along in the development cycle this game is, so it may be another year or so before we get to play it. However, the game is in good hands as it is being made by the Fire Emblem Awakening team, which did a fantastic job the last time around.

New Nintendo 3DS XL hits US, European store shelves on February 13

<article>The Nintendo New 3DS XL will finally be released in the United States on February 13 with a $200 price tag, and includes a number of hardware improvements for gamers. The new gaming unit has better face-tracking 3D, a more powerful processor, additional shoulder buttons, built-in NFC and a second analog mini-stick for gamers.

http://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/4/2/42830_01_new-nintendo-3ds-xl-hits-european-store-shelves-february-13.jpg

Nintendo also decided not to include an AC adapter with the New 3DS XL, so owners will get home and find they don't have a bundled charger. All new units will have a 4GB micro SD card, as Nintendo moved from standard SD to micro SD, due to changes in the internal layout of the new 3DS XL's hardware.

Unfortunately, Nintendo isn't releasing the New Nintendo 3DS in the United States, despite it launching in Japan and Australia.

New Nintendo 3DS XL: Whats New in the Handheld

Nintendo is releasing it’s new Nintendo 3DS XL handheld console on the 13th of February. The device has been announced just weeks short of the new original 3DS handheld and for a bit of extra cash, you can get the new handheld at $200 which will include the device itself but not its charger, given that it’s traditional charger is a bit bulky and many claims have been put up that you’d be better off with just a simple USB charger then the more expensive and redundant version of the charger sold by the Nintendo itself.
http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Nintendo-3DS-XL-635x357.png (http://cdn4.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Nintendo-3DS-XL.png)
The Features of the New Handheld by Nintendo The first look isn’t at all that different from the previous version, but what you will notice that the device is much sleeker, mainly because of its a glossy finish. The new release is also a bit bigger and thinner than the previous version, and these additions will make the device look better than the par finish of the previous handheld.

The volume slider has been shifted to the right side of the screen and the Start and Select buttons have been sifted to the right of the bottom screen. The memory card slot has been changed to a Micro SD, as it is the memory stick commonly used now days and also because it takes lesser space. New triggers on the back of the unit feature ZL and ZR triggers, and a bit more popular version which caught the crowds eye is the ‘C-stick,’ which is located just to the top left of the typical face buttons and helps in-game to manipulate the camera freely at any time. This new and interesting feature is a good addition to the handheld as it will give user more freedom on the game map.
What you won’t notice in the console until you turn it on is the new face-tracking camera Nintendo has added to the device which enables the handheld console to the image to the players viewing angle by tracking the users eyes. Fascinating, isn’t it? and it’s fast and accurate altogether, providing you with crisp 3D and no apparent blurriness, a problem common in its predecessors.
Overall, the device is a wholesome improvement over the previous version of the 3DS and Nintendo has created a much better version of the 3DS which looks better in the hand and provides a better gaming experience although it may present problems in terms of charging it if your don’t buy a charger separately for the device.

Majora’s Mask New 3DS XL has been selling out fast in the US (http://www.kitguru.net/desktop-pc/console-desktop-pc/matthew-wilson/majoras-mask-new-3ds-xl-has-been-selling-out-fast-in-the-us/)

Yesterday, Nintendo announced the new 3DS XL for the US and UK markets alongside a brand new Majora’s Mask themed edition. It turns out, people really really wanted the Zelda themed hand-held as it has pretty much sold out everywhere, just a day after pre-orders went live.
Over at GameStop, the Majora’s Mask 3DS sold out in just 15 minutes online. Speaking with Polygon (http://www.polygon.com/2015/1/14/7545893/majoras-mask-3ds-xl-sold-out-online-gamestop), a store representative said: “Online, the Majora’s Mask bundle sold out within 15 minutes”.
http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/zt4cxkpkpkc7ys4im9rg.png (http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/zt4cxkpkpkc7ys4im9rg.png)
GameStop customers could still go in-store to order one though. Best Buy has also sold out.
As a result of this high demand, scalpers have managed to get their orders in and then charge ridiculous prices for the console on eBay (http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.XMajora%27 s+Mask+3DS+XL&_nkw=Majora%27s+Mask+3DS+XL&_sacat=0), with many listings going for as high as $400.
Amazon currently has no stock and there is no word on a UK release for the special edition new 3DS. Although, GAME UK do have a Monster Hunter 4 themed one available online. 3DS browser exploit lets you play Game Boy Color roms (http://www.kitguru.net/gaming/matthew-wilson/3ds-browser-exploit-lets-you-play-game-boy-color-roms/)

Despite Nintendo’s best efforts to keep the 3DS locked down and uncrackable to those looking to play ROM files, a new exploit has been discovered, allowing users to emulate Game Boy Color titles. The whole thing works by ‘injecting’ ROM files in to the memory of a legitimately downloaded Game Boy Color game from the 3DS eShop.
By pausing the bought and paid for game and then switching to the 3DS browser, you can download ROM files and get them running via the paused game still on in the background. This work around is limited to the regular 3DS, 2DS and 3DS XL, the ‘new’ 3DS is immune to this method due to an updated browser.
http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/3DS-Emulation.jpg (http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/3DS-Emulation.jpg)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKrzMcHzWoc&x-yt-ts=1422411861&x-yt-cl=84924572&feature=player_embedded

The emulation is also limited to Game Boy Color games specifically, you won’t be playing any GBA games unfortunately.

Now that this exploit is public, Nintendo will likely patch it up in an update some time soon. However, you can buy a limited number of Game Boy games on the Nintendo eShop if you really want your fix.

New 3DS Handhelds, Wii U Games Fuel Nintendo's Rebound

http://media.bestofmicro.com/1/O/476988/gallery/SI_GenericNintendo_w_600.png (http://www.tomshardware.com/gallery/SI_GenericNintendo,0101-476988-0-2-12-1-png-.html)Yesterday, Nintendo posted its financial report (http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2015/150128e.pdf) for March 2014 - December 2014, and looking over the results, the report in general is positive, showing a 174,500,000,000 Japanese yen ($1,474,441,240 USD) increase in total assets. It also shows a net income of 59,515,000,000 Japanese yen ($502,873,182 USD) for the time period.
Promising New Handheld Recently, Nintendo has been busy with the excitement of the newest members of its handheld console line, the New Nintendo 3DS and the New Nintendo 3DS XL. The new handheld launched in Japan on October 11, 2014, and in Australia and New Zealand on November 21, 2014, but it has not yet launched in other parts of the world.
The first three months of sales in Japan added up to 1.75 million units, with just another 80,000 units sold in Australia and New Zealand. Taken together, these figures show a very strong launch of the new systems.
By comparison, the now old Nintendo 3DS that launched back in February 26, 2011 only managed to garner 1.03 million units sold in Japan. However, it's possible that the outgoing handhelds sold by Nintendo at the time, the Nintendo DSi and DSi XL, cannibalized sales a bit.
http://media.bestofmicro.com/1/N/476987/gallery/IMG_30012015_133927_w_600.png (http://www.tomshardware.com/gallery/IMG_30012015_133927,0101-476987-0-2-12-1-png-.html)Looking back at the financial report (http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2011/110425e.pdf) for the launch of the Nintendo 3DS, sales for Nintendo's outgoing Nintendo DSi and DSi XL reaching a staggering combined total of 2.35 million units. By comparison, the 750,000 units reported for the Nintendo 3DS at the launch of the New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL is a much smaller threat to the new system.
Nintendo plans to launch the New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL on February 13, 2015 in Europe. North America won't see the New Nintendo 3DS, but the New Nintendo 3DS XL should be available there on February 14, 2015.
Looking at the sales figures, it is easy to see that Nintendo's handheld consoles have sold much better in the Americas than in Japan. The numbers do appear to follow a similar trend, however. Just like in Japan, during this last sales season, sales of the Nintendo 3DS XL and Nintendo 2DS are down relative to the end-of-life sales for the Nintendo DSi and DSi XL at the launch of their successor.
At the launch of the Nintendo 3DS in North America, similar to Japan, sales of the Nintendo DSi and DSi XL reached 8.39 million units, while Nintendo 3DS sales sat at a mere 1.32 million. This again shows evidence that Nintendo's outgoing system was likely eating into the sales for the new console. This should be less of a problem with the New Nintendo 3DS XL. For this last period, the Nintendo 3DS and 2DS handhelds only had a combined total of 2.19 million units sold.
With the outgoing handhelds selling roughly six million fewer units at end-of-life than their predecessors, sales for the New Nintendo 3DS XL look promising. If sales of the new handheld follow the same course, the New Nintendo 3DS XL won't have any trouble breaking the 1.32 million launch sales of its predecessor and could potentially even reach over 2 million sales in its first quarter.
Wii U On The Rise Turning our attention over to sales of the company's home console, the Wii U, things continue to look bright for Nintendo. Following a series of successful releases of top-rated first-party and second-party games, Nintendo has seen significant growth in sales of both the Wii U hardware and associated software.
In Japan, sales surprisingly dropped, despite the launch of these console-exclusive games, from 830,000 devices and 3.47 million software units sold in the last period down to 490,000 devices and 2.85 million software units sold. The growth was highest in the Americas and other parts of the world. World sales (excluding Japan) saw a 60 percent increase in hardware sales, climbing from 1.58 million to 2.54 million, while software sales jumped up 42 percent, to 17.74 million from 12.49 million. This is despite increased competition from Microsoft and Sony.
All of this adds up to a strong year for Nintendo. As a result of the poor initial sales of the Nintendo Wii U and a declining net income, some began to question the future of Nintendo in the gaming world. Although Nintendo is the oldest of the three primary combatants in the game console market, it has faced ever-increasing pressure from the relatively weak hardware inside of its systems.
http://media.bestofmicro.com/1/P/476989/gallery/Wii-U_w_600.png (http://www.tomshardware.com/gallery/Wii-U,0101-476989-0-2-12-1-png-.html)Several triple-A gaming titles that launched for both Microsoft's Xbox One and Sony's Playstation 4 (and sometimes for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3) skipped over the Wii U entirely. The lack of sales has caused some third-party developers such as Ubisoft to pull all support for the system. Adapting games for use on various consoles is often an expensive and time-consuming process; that, combined with the initially poor sales for Wii U games, made these companies apparently no longer view the Wii U as a profitable console to port games to.
With the dismal state of the Wii U, many declared it a failed console. Some went so far as to suggest that Nintendo should drop out of the console wars and turn its most valuable assets -- its extensive first-party game intellectual property -- into titles for other devices.
Instead, Nintendo has decided to take advantage of that IP to gain ground against the competition. Nintendo has the most extensive first-party library of games available of the three major next-gen game consoles. Many of these titles launched during 2014, and the positive increase in global sales points to the Wii U making a come-back.
The best news for Nintendo is that it hasn't played its full hand when it comes to console exclusives yet. Although many sequels to classic Nintendo games and recently-acquired game series have already been made (including entries in the Super Smash Bros. series, Donkey Kong series, Zelda series, Bayonetta series and several entries in the Mario universe), Nintendo still has untapped potential for games from the Metroid series, and others. This is not to mention confirmed games under development such as a new Zelda, Xenoblade Chronicles X and Devil's Third.
After examining all of this information, it is easy to see that 2014 was an excellent year for Nintendo. With increasing sales and new releases coming up in the near future, it seems a fairly safe bet that 2015 could be even better.

First Exclusive Title For new Nintendo 3DS out on April 10

http://cdn2.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/new_3ds_boxart.0-635x357.jpg (http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/new_3ds_boxart.0.jpg)
The new Nintendo 3DS is coming out in less than a week on February 13, in North America and Europe. It has already been released in Japan and Australia, since last year. It has been very well received and most of its enhancements and changes, have been for the better.
Face Tracking 3D The 3D has been improved with the use of a camera, that tracks your face and adjusts the 3D effect accordingly, providing an excellent viewing experience. The addition of the c-stick, a nub resembling the ones used on IBM’s Thinkpads, works flawlessly in place of a second analog stick and the two additional shoulder buttons, provide much extra flexibility for both developers and players to accommodate their needs.
http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/2793612-new-nintendo-3ds-white_rs-635x415.jpg (http://cdn2.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/2793612-new-nintendo-3ds-white_rs.jpg)
North America will only get the new Nintendo 3DS XL, whereas Europe will also get the standard new Nintendo 3DS, also released in Japan and Australia. Both of these units receive the additional features as well as some enhancements made in their processing power. The performance boost provided, allows for much quicker loading times and downloads and further enhances the opening and closing of apps.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3D graces the new Nintendo 3DS The system’s first exclusive title comes in the form of Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, an updated version of the Nintendo Wii title, released in 2012 in North America. The game follows Shulk (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shulk) and his band of friends as they search for answers about the mysterious “Monado” sword and defend their homeland from violent robotic creatures known as the Mechon. The game contains an open world (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_world) design and strongly emphasizes exploration due to the world’s large size. The game was very well-received by critics, with many citing it as a great example of innovation and improvement in a rather stagnant genre of Japanese role-playing video games (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Role-playing_video_game). The game has spawned a spiritual successor (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiritual_successor), Xenoblade Chronicles X (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenoblade_Chronicles_X), which is currently in development for the Wii U (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii_U) and is scheduled for release in 2015.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3D will be exclusive to the new Nintendo 3DS and won’t be playable on the older systems.

Ironfall: Invasion Releases Later this Week for Nintendo 3DS

A third-person cover based game style is finally making it to the 3DS very soon (http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/02/09/gears-of-war-lite-ironfall-invasion-gets-a-release-date). The Gears of War inspired game, Ironfall: Invasion is supposed to be Nintendo’s flagship third-person shooter game and should prove to be groundbreaking in how it approaches the genre on the 3DS.
http://cdn4.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/ironfall-2692817-635x381.jpg (http://cdn2.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/ironfall-2692817.jpg)
Developer VD-DEV has said that Friday February 13th with be the release date for Ironfall: Invasion, a cover-based shooter on the Nintendo 3DS. The development team is actually a smaller one with only three people actively working on the title. But the game seems to include all of the basic elements that one can expect from a cover-based third person shooter. It will also make heavy use of the c-stick for movement and challenge the players patience as they are under fire and making decisions as to when to pop-out to take out enemies. Like other games in the genre, you can make string together actions in order to quickly move between items of cover while under fire rather fluidly.
The top screen will be used for displaying the heart pumping action while the second screen can be used to display information about your character, like health and ammo and the like. A heart rate monitor is actually used to display the relative health level in a really novel way. It actually looks quite amazing. There will also be a multiplayer mode that supports up to six players at a time. Local multiplayer will also be there, letting you battle it out, or cower in the corner, with your friends.

Being that this is a first for the 3DS, we’ll have to wait to see what the actual final build plays like before passing judgement. It is, however a fresh new idea that could help to further vitalize the already successful 3DS. This, of course, is optimized for the “new” 3DS but can certainly be played on the older models without trouble, aside from the controls being remapped to accommodate the lack of the c-stick. I wonder, then, if there are any plans for a WII U version.
I’d love to see the motion controls of the WII U being taken advantage of for a shooter, it would be most excellent I think. I know that a leaning system was integrated into Battlefield 4 when using the Kinect on the Xbox One, but I could never get it to quite work right. But Ironfall: Invasion should be interesting, and something to watch for those out there with a 3DS. It’s time to take the plunge I suppose.

Transferring data to the new 3DS XL is complicated

http://www.fudzilla.com/media/k2/items/cache/fdc3962ed0eef7248e107d7be4290513_L.jpg (http://www.fudzilla.com/media/k2/items/cache/fdc3962ed0eef7248e107d7be4290513_XL.jpg)

Nintendo makes a video to show the process in detail
So the new 3DS XL is coming, but if I want to transfer my files from my 3DS/2DS over to the new 3DS XL can I do that?

It turns out that the answer is "YES", but the process isn't exactly easy. In fact the requirement of a size 0 Phillips screwdrivers alone tips us off that this isn't going to be easy or quick.
In fact Nintendo has made a video do show you the entire process in depth. First off you will need to gather the required stuff necessary to complete the process. Here is a list of what you will need: Your current 3DS/2DS and its SD Card, A New Nintendo 3DS XL and A microSD card of equal or larger capacity (a 4GB one comes installed in the New 3DS XL), A size 0 Phillips screwdriver, A computer, An adapter to connect the SD and MicroSD cards to said computer, and Wireless broadband internet access.
While Nintendo admits that you can transfer your data across the wireless, they estimate that would take about 4 hours to do. So using the computer is the best way to get the transfer done the fastest, but it requires you go through about 14 steps to get it done. Apparently there is no simply way to make this happen any easier.

New Nintendo 3DS XL Launches In U.S., Sells Without Charger

http://media.bestofmicro.com/W/U/479406/gallery/nintendo-3ds-xl_w_450.jpg (http://www.tomshardware.com/gallery/nintendo-3ds-xl,0101-479406-0-2-9-1-jpg-.html)
Today, Nintendo (http://www.nintendo.com/3ds) released the New Nintendo 3DS XL in the United States.
The new system brings many feature updates over the older 3DS system, although some of the changes may not be readily apparent. For example, on the outside of the devices, the changes are really subtle.
The speaker holes have a different pattern, the color is a bit different, the volume switch was moved, the letters on the buttons have been colored, there are a few extra shoulder buttons and there is an extra little bump above the action buttons that users will likely mistake for a button.
That extra little bump is actually what Nintendo calls a "C stick," but it's very similar to the TrackPoint pointing stick used on Lenovo's ThinkPads. This is expected to help give users better control in certain games.
One of the New Nintendo 3D XL features uses the camera to track your face while in use. By doing so, the console is able to alter its displays slightly to improve the 3D effects.
Going by Nintendo's specs, the only other changes to the devices are using a microSDHC instead of an SD card and having built-in NFC technology. The NFC technology is likely the most important change for users, as it will simplify the use of the Amiibos and no longer require a separate adapter.
Although Nintendo's New Nintendo 3DS system has a few more features that help separate it from the older 3DS, such as changeable face plates, this version is not expected to make a release in the U.S.; only the New Nintendo 3DS XL will be seeing a release.
http://media.bestofmicro.com/W/R/479403/gallery/nintendo-3ds-xl-charger_w_300.pngA problem is already arising, however. Nintendo plans to sell the New Nintendo 3DS XL without a charger. Currently, the only users who will be able to charge their devices are those who own a similar device from Nintendo and use that charger.
This works out really well for users who will trade in their old devices towards credit on the new one, but for anyone thinking they can just buy a New Nintendo 3DS XL without owning the old one, this will be a headache.
Most simply, users who buy a New Nintendo 3DS XL and don't have the charger can buy the official one for $9.95 on Nintendo's store. It can also be purchased at Gamestop for $12.95, but after contacting a few local Gamestop (http://www.gamestop.com/nintendo-3ds/accessories/3ds-nintendo-ac-adapter/120226) stores, none of them had it in stock. Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Original-Nintendo-3DS-XL-Adapter-DSi/dp/B00CJTA87A/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1423837913&sr=1-1&keywords=3ds+power+adapter) has them available too, but at $13.98, and coming from lesser-known resellers.

There are several third-party chargers not made by Nintendo, and these can be bought at many places such as Amazon or Ebay, but unfortunately, this will void the warranty of the device.
Users who want to purchase the New Nintendo 3DS XL will be able to do so at many retailers for $199.99.

Nintendo Making Mii Smartphone App

http://cdn.eteknix.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/mii-800x800.jpg
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has confirmed that the company is working on an app to allow Wii U and 3DS owners to use Mii avatars and the Miiverse social network on their smartphones.
“It would be fun for players to use their Mii characters as icons on social media,” Iwata told Japan’s Nikkei Business Daily. “We are currently developing an application that will allow users to do that.”
This marks a change in strategy for Nintendo, a company that has demonstrated reticence to enter the mobile market in the past. “In the past, I have opposed making smartphone and tablet versions of Nintendo titles,” Iwata said. “Prices for content aimed at smartphones and tablets are falling quickly. I am still wary of the category.”

The New Nintendo 3DS sold 335,000 units in first week (http://www.kitguru.net/desktop-pc/console-desktop-pc/matthew-wilson/the-new-nintendo-3ds-sold-335000-units-in-first-week/)

Nintendo’s new 3DS seems to be off to a good star, having sold around 335,000 units since its launch last week in Europe and North America. Two big contributing factors would be the launches of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate.
The information comes from Nintendo itself during a financial briefing where it was revealed that 170,000 units of the new 3DS were sold in the US and 160,000 units were sold throughout Europe. Back in October last year the console sold 230,000 units over the launch weekend in Japan.
http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/zt4cxkpkpkc7ys4im9rg.png (http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/zt4cxkpkpkc7ys4im9rg.png)
As you would imagine, Majora’s Mask 3D and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate have also sold well. The latest Zelda has shifted 340,000 copies in the US and 230,000 units in Europe, which is a significant step up from the week one sales of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate on the other hand has sold 110,000 units, which is a lot more than the 40,000 units Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate sold back when it launched.

Um bom resultado para a Nintendo.

Nintendo says why smaller model New Nintendo 3DS wasn't released in US

Nintendo left some gamers confused when it confirmed it would release the New Nintendo 3DS XL console but not the smaller New Nintendo 3DS in the United States. However, the marketing decision was made in an effort to avoid confusing US gamers regarding the previous 3DS models and New Nintendo 3DS console unit.

image: http://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/4/3/43622_01_nintendo-smaller-model-new-3ds-released.jpg (http://www.tweaktown.com/image.php?image=imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/4/3/43622_01_nintendo-smaller-model-new-3ds-released_full.jpg)
http://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/4/3/43622_01_nintendo-smaller-model-new-3ds-released.jpg

"We're a different market," said Damon Baker, Senior Manager of Nintendo of America, in a statement to Nintendo Life (http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/02/nintendo_of_americas_damon_baker_explains_the_new_ nintendo_3ds_xl_decision_and_desire_to_engage_with _the_community). "And now we have clear differentiation between those three systems. Before, there was a very limited difference between the 3DS and 3DS XL: other than size. It was the same resolution, same functionality... now, there's the 2DS, 3DS, and New 3DS XL, all of which have their own functionality and features."

The hardware specifications are the same, but US gamers lose out on custom faceplates available for the New Nintendo 3DS unit. The New Nintendo 3DS can be found in Japan and Europe, and it's possible a US release could happen, but the company didn't confirm future plans.

"The different price points give it a clear message for consumers: the core audience... we weren't going to win with them on that decision. But we had to think about expanding the user base, we had to be able to market it and make it easy to pick up for consumers."

The New 3DS XL is nice, but not a must-have yet

For a couple of years we have deemed Nintendo's 3DS as an essential (http://kotaku.com/5935578/the-nintendo-3ds-xl-the-kotaku-review) piece of gaming hardware. And for decades, new iterations of Nintendo hardware immediately rendered older units obsolete. Things are different this time around. Get it if you don't have one. We do think you should have a 3DS in your gaming collection. There are tons of great games (these are our top 12 (http://kotaku.com/the-12-best-games-on-the-3ds-5878903), with the caveat that we haven't decided whether the brand-new Monster Hunter 4 and Majora's Mask remake should get added to that list). More 3DS games are being made all the time, primarily by Nintendo themselves, with key contributions from Atlus, Capcom and others.
If you don't have a 3DS yet and are willing to spend $200, the New 3DS XL is a pretty good option (http://kotaku.com/weve-had-the-new-3ds-xl-for-weeks-and-this-is-what-we-1685427867). (The non-new 3DS XL costs $175; the smaller 3DS goes for about $160). You're future-proofing a bit, and you're getting some better control options and stereoscopic 3D tech than you would if you got the older models.
But, if you do have a 3DS, you don't need to upgrade yet. The New 3DS XL has a faster processor and will eventually have games that only run on it and not older 3DS/2DS models. Not yet, though. You don't even need to think about that in North America until the first New 3DS-exclusive game, the port of Wii role-playing game Xenoblade Chronicles, comes out in April (Check out this Wii-New 3DS Xenoblade graphics comparison (http://kotaku.com/the-new-3ds-vs-wii-graphics-comparison-youve-been-wait-1684626879), if you'd like to see how close the boosted 3DS hardware can match Wii/PS2-level tech).
Sure, the New 3DS will speed up the system's load times. But there aren't even any games out yet that use the New 3DS' two extra shoulder buttons. [Update - 2:40pm: Some readers have pointed out that the two extra shoulder buttons can currently ape the inputs programmed for the two extra shoulder buttons that were part of the 3DS' Circle Pad Pro add-on. As noted later in this piece, not many games supported that peripheral, but those that do will work with the New 3DS' added controls. So we can say there is currently limited support for the new shoulder buttons, but not zero support.]
http://www.techspot.com/images2/news/bigimage/2015-02-19_10-29-05.png
<small>Above: Nintendo promotional imagery highlighting the new control inputs.</small>
The new nub is not quite the second circle pad we were hoping for, but it helps. The New 3DS' new c-stick allows for dual-analog controls and surely will be programmed for that by developers who believe there are enough New 3DS owners to justify a control scheme that wouldn't work on a standard 3DS. For the moment, though, the c-stick nub can pretend to be a "circle pad pro," which was an add-on (http://kotaku.com/5886103/the-3ds-circle-pad-pro-is-mostly-great-actually) that put a second analog circle-pad input on the right of the 3DS. There aren't many games that supported the circle pad pro (here's a short list (http://nintendo3ds.wikia.com/wiki/Circle_Pad_Pro)), but it's nice that the New 3DS will at least let players play those games' alternate control schemes without an added peripheral.
The main problem with the c-stick nub is that it doesn't have much give. You can't flick it as you could the c-stick, which has made it less than ideal for, say, the circle pad pro control scheme in Kid Icarus Uprising. It works, but it's not a 1:1 substitute.
It is promising to see that the developers of Majora's Mask 3D programmed free camera controls to the c-stick, which makes tracking enemies in that game a lot easier. In this regard, at least, New 3DS players will have a better experience with the game than non-new 3DS players will.
We do love the improved 3D. The New 3DS tracks the position of your mouth and eyes in order to calculate the proper angle at which to display the system's glasses-free stereoscopic 3D. It can do this constantly and on the fly, which means that it'll transmit a clear 3D image to you even if you begin to rock your head or the system. This results in more stable 3D effects that are only occasionally baffled if a second person's face gets close to yours or if you're moving your head while wearing glasses. Even then, the system figures things out quickly. It's a lovely improvement (http://kotaku.com/testing-out-the-new-nintendo-3dss-head-tracking-1646040641).
The much-improved 3D effect on the New 3DS has even elicited this odd remark (http://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/#/3ds/majoras-mask-3d/0/4) from Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata:

"It looked so good that it made me want to apologize for not having the 3D functions work this greatly when we first released the Nintendo 3DS system. Of course, such technology was not available when we released the original Nintendo 3DS, so it was impossible to integrate it at the time. I hope people will forget their expectations of 3D from the past, and replay on the New Nintendo 3DS systems the 3DS games they played before.
We don't love that they left out a power cable. For reasons that reek of Nintendo cost-cutting (from the company that eliminated the headphone jack from their second Game Boy Advance!), the New 3DS XL does not come with a power cable. The new handheld is compatible with the AC adapter cable from the 3DS and 3DS XL, but if you don't have one of those, then you've got to buy a $10 cable. Nintendo has been leaving power cables out (http://www.theverge.com/2015/2/11/8020655/nintendo-new-3ds-xl-charger-hard-to-buy) of their hardware packages outside of North America for some time, but that doesn't make it any less strange or annoying.
It's oddly difficult (http://www.theverge.com/2015/2/11/8020655/nintendo-new-3ds-xl-charger-hard-to-buy) to buy an official Nintendo AC adapter, but our friends on the Gawker Media Commerce team have some power cord suggestions (http://gear.kinja.com/the-new-3ds-doesnt-include-a-power-adapter-get-this-in-1685488657).
You should be aware of some other possible hidden costs. The New 3DS XL uses micro SD cards. It comes with a decent-sized 4GB one, but if you want more storage, or if you had more storage on a standard SD card on your 3DS, you'll need to buy a bigger micro SD for your New 3DS XL. The new Nintendo portable doesn't support the SD card. Data transfer (http://kotaku.com/how-to-transfer-data-from-a-3ds-to-a-new-3ds-1685481150) is easy, though, and you'll be able to bring all your games and save files from an older 3DS to the new one. Just make sure you have a small screwdriver to open the new unit up.
http://www.techspot.com/images2/news/bigimage/2015-02-19_10-31-05.jpg
The New 3DS XL has a pretty short stylus, too, shorter than the 3DS XL's. You might want to think about getting a larger stylus.
Oh, if you want the non-XL, smaller New 3DS? Sorry, America. It's not coming to North America, and any overseas models will be region-locked. Maybe Nintendo will bring it here in the future.
Bottom line: it's still a good system, though, and the best 3DS yet.

3DS exploit bypasses microtransactions in Pokemon Shuffle (http://www.kitguru.net/desktop-pc/console-desktop-pc/matthew-wilson/3ds-exploit-bypasses-microtransactions-in-pokemon-shuffle/)

Nintendo launched a little free to play title on the 3DS a while back called Pokemon Shuffle. Since it is a free puzzle game, micro-transactions were incorporated but a new 3DS console exploit allows you to completely bypass the annoying paid for items and just enjoy the game.
The 3DS title uses a premium in-game currency called gems, which you buy with real money. These gems grant extra lives and in-game cash. One gem will set you back 89p while 75 gems will cost you £42.99. Like with most free to play titles on the mobile platform, timers are used to refill lives and money over time, encouraging you to pay and skip the wait.
http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/630x.jpg (http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/630x.jpg)
However, hackers have found a way to change the cost of the items available in the Pokemon Shuffle store, making them all free with no gems required. The exploit uses the same technique that allowed users to emulate Gameboy Color roms on the 3DS using the browser (http://www.kitguru.net/gaming/matthew-wilson/3ds-browser-exploit-lets-you-play-game-boy-color-roms/).
In order to successfully pull this off you will need an old 3DS as the new models come with an updated browser. You will also need 3DS firmware versions 9.0 to 9.5, any higher and this won’t work. The browser exploit lets you inject new code in to the memory of a downloaded game via the 3DS browser, tampering with the system a little bit.
If you want to do it yourself you will have to dig around for a tutorial, which may be hard to find, I imagine Nintendo is scrambling to remove traces of this exploit from the web as we speak.

Donkey Kong Coming to Virtual Console

That iconic barrel throwing pal of ours seems to be making its way over to the Wii U and 3DS’s Virtual Console mechanism. So be on the lookout (http://www.nintendo.com/eshop/offers) for some more classic games to enjoy.
http://cdn3.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Donkey-Kong-Country-by-Orioto-635x357.jpg (http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Donkey-Kong-Country-by-Orioto.jpg)Art courtesy @Orioto

Nintendo has released six Donkey Kong games for the Virtual Console shop for the Wii U and 3DS. Well, it’s probably a long time coming, but it seems that Nintendo (http://www.nintendo.com/eshop/offers) has finally been able to launch both the Donkey Kong Country and the Donkey Kong Land trilogies for the Wii U and the 3DS respectively.
Wii U:

Donkey Kong Country
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong’s Quest
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble

3DS:

Donkey Kong Land
Donkey Kong Land 2
Donkey Kong Land 3

Rare was the original developer of all six of these games starting back in 1994. The Donkey Kong Country trilogy was originally released on the SNES while the Donkey Kong Land trilogy found its way on the Game Boy. These aren’t necessarily “remastered” per se, but still seem to do the big screen justice and look just great.
I think they were generally praised as being some of the better and more jovial 2D platform games of the time. The gameplay is simple, yet atrociously fun. I think it’s great that they’ve finally re-released these two trilogies to be enjoyed again. You may remember that they were pulled from Wii’s Virtual Console store back in November of 2012 with very little explanation, so the further development for the Wii U may be precisely that reason.
If you’ve never had the pleasure of enjoying this 2D platformer, then I suggest taking some time to go collect some bananas and to get familiar with riding rhinos. I can almost promise you’ll enjoy it, though there is always someone that can find a fault that distracts too much from gameplay.
Does anyone have any great memories associated to any of the Donkey Kong games? Let us know in the comments!

Attack on Titan 3DS game coming to the west (http://www.kitguru.net/gaming/jon-martindale/attack-on-titan-3ds-game-coming-to-the-west/)

Despite being quite a global phenomenon, the west usually gets a bit left out when it comes to Attack on Titan. Not only is the English translation of the manga a good few months behind that of its Japanese counterpart, but games based on the hit series are often denied us too. Now though at least, it looks like we’ll have something more than the AoT tribute game (http://fenglee.com/game/aog/) to play, as Humanity in Chains is coming to the 3DS shop this May.
http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/ato2-1024x556.jpg (http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/ato2.jpg)
The game will feature all of the titan slaying, grappling hook swinging action from the original game, with updated local and online four player cooperative play and support for the new 3DS XL’s C-Stick.
This was all revealed during Nintendo’s Direct address yesterday, which had a lot of exciting news in it. But when it comes to Titan slaying, there really only was one announcement worth paying attention to and that’s this one, with its new teaser trailer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUuuU5SiKOc

If you’ve been wondering what all of this Titan attack stuff is about, then you can watch the first two episodes of the anime adaptation for free on the Nintendo eShop. Crunchyroll (http://www.crunchyroll.com/attack-on-titan) also has the entire series available for free.

Modded 3DS is a PC Remote Desktop

<section> http://cdn.eteknix.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/3ds-windows-800x640.jpg
Nintendo 3DS modders are building a homebrew app to turn the handheld gaming console into a PC desktop remote controller. The first preview version shows gameplay footage of Blizzard’s MMORPG, World of Warcraft.
The early build is still far from stable and suffers from stuttering frame rates, but it is still an achievement in itself considering how difficult Nintendo has made it, with tightened security measures and the threat of bricking from firmware updates, to develop homebrew mods for its current-gen hardware.
The first run of Nintendo DS models were a modder’s dream, with keen home programmers creating their own add-on hardware that fit into Game Boy Advance cartridge slot, an option since absent from later DS, 3DS, and 2DS models. Similar innovations in software brought the Homebrew Channel application loader to the Nintendo Wii console, giving the console video playback capabilities, as well as opening the system up to emulators and backwards compatibility with previous Nintendo game ROMs through the wonderful open source Nintendo software, allowing Wii and Wii U owners to play Gamecube games.
The 3DS PC remote desktop app is being developed by GBATemp forum user (http://gbatemp.net/threads/homebrew-3ds-remote-desktop.381646/)retrozelda, who has also made the early build available for download (http://retrozelda.com/?page=apps&id=46).

Nintendo 3DS can be made region-free with new exploit (http://www.kitguru.net/desktop-pc/console-desktop-pc/matthew-wilson/nintendo-3ds-can-be-made-region-free-with-new-exploit/)

People have been poking holes in Nintendo’s closed 3DS system for a little while now. At one point, you could emulate Gameboy Color games through the browser, one file modder found a way to bypass micro transactions in Pokemon Shuffle and now, there is a way to bypass the region lock on the console.
However, to get this to work, you will need a copy of Cubic Ninja. Once you have that, you just need to scan a QR code from within the game. This exploit works on both the old and new 3DS models with the most recent firmware installed. However, it is likely that Nintendo will patch this out soon.

The method was discovered by “Smealum”, a 3DS homebrew creator. The QR codes needed to complete the region unlocking process can be found on his own site, HERE (http://smealum.net/regionfour/).
The process itself is fairly simple but Cubic Ninja is a hard game to come by these days. Additionally, Nintendo pulled the digital version down from the eShop after it was used to previous 3DS exploits. Nintendo has yet to comment on this latest issue but it will probably end up patching it up soon.

Nintendo racks up 52 million 3DS sales worldwide

The Nintendo 3DS has surpassed 15 million units sold in the United States, boosted by a strong library of game titles, Nintendo said. The Japanese gaming company launched the 3DS to US consumers in March 2011, and had to refresh efforts immediately due to disappointing early sales.

However, the addition of Super Mario, Mario Kart, Smash Bros., and Pokemon has helped boost sales. To date, the 3DS has sold more than 52 million units worldwide, as Nintendo continues to cater to a niche gamer group.

"While crossing 15 million units is certainly a significant milestone, we are equally excited about the new momentum we've created in 2015 thanks to new hardware and an unrivaled library of software," said Scott Moffitt, marketing executive at Nintendo, in a statement published by GameSpot. "With more great games on the way and a hardware system for every type of gamer, 2015 is shaping up to be one of the stronger years yet for Nintendo 3DS in the United States."

The New Nintendo 3DS XL, which launched in February, helped significantly boost sales in Q1 and Q2 of 2015 when compared to last year.

Nintendo Adds 'Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time,' Other New Titles To Its Consoles

http://media.bestofmicro.com/1/Q/509390/gallery/3_w_600.png (http://www.tomshardware.com/gallery/3,0101-509390-0-2-12-1-png-.html)Nintendo added some new content to its Nintendo 3DS and Wii U consoles, including one of the greatest games ever produced by Nintendo: The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time.
The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time originally launched over 15 years ago for the Nintendo 64, but at the time the game was a smash hit. It received either perfect or nearly perfect scores from virtually every game review website and magazine in the world, and some claim it to be the best game ever made.
Given the game's reputation, and because video games are timeless in a way, it isn't surprising that Nintendo is re-releasing it on the Wii U Virtual Console. If anything, it is surprising that the company waited this long to do so, but given that it has been available on the Wii Virtual Console and the 3DS Virtual Console for a few years now, it is a little less surprising. Regardless, users will be happy to add this classic to their Wii U Virtual Console collection.
http://media.bestofmicro.com/1/S/509392/gallery/2_w_600.png (http://www.tomshardware.com/gallery/2,0101-509392-0-2-12-1-png-.html)Nintendo pushed out a few other titles today, too. For the Wii U, PadaOne Games released a retro 16-bit side scroller called Roving Rogue, and TACS Games released a quadcopter simulator game called Quadcopter Pilot Challenge.
http://media.bestofmicro.com/1/P/509389/gallery/1_w_600.png (http://www.tomshardware.com/gallery/1,0101-509389-0-2-12-1-png-.html)Over on the Nintendo 3DS, Koei Tecmo released a new entry in the popular "Samurai Warriors" series titled “Samurai Warriors: Chronicles 3.” This game incorporates the battle system and challenge mode from “Samurai Warriors 4” with the best features from previous games in the series, and a storyline with multiple endings to create a new more original game in the series.
http://media.bestofmicro.com/1/R/509391/gallery/4_w_600.png (http://www.tomshardware.com/gallery/4,0101-509391-0-2-12-1-png-.html)The Nintendo 3DS also gets a puzzle strategy game called Mercenaries Saga 2 by Circle Ent. The game looks reminiscent of 16-bit games on the SNES from years ago, with lots of similarities in overall look and design to Final Fantasy III.
Although these aren't major AAA titles and are reminiscent of the 1990s, that doesn't mean that they aren't solid video games. Many gamers today grew up playing games just like this, and sometimes we forget that high-definition graphics isn't synonymous with a good game.
At the end of the day, these games represent a solid effort by a game maker that the most important aspect of a game is to be entertaining, not visually stunning, and that's why a game from 1998 can still make for a good time today.

3DS can launch homebrew through the official YouTube app (http://www.kitguru.net/desktop-pc/console-desktop-pc/matthew-wilson/3ds-can-launch-homebrew-through-the-official-youtube-app/)

Nintendo has had some issues with homebrew exploits on the 3DS recently. Two games have had to be removed from the eShop due to exploits that allowed them to run custom software. A short while back, Nintendo also had to update its 3DS web browser, after it was discovered that you could load up an emulator through it.
Now, Nintendo has another homebrew problem on its hands, this time thanks to the official YouTube app. 3DS coder, Jordan “smealum” Rabet revealed the ‘Tubehax’ method over the weekend on Twitter.
http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Homebrew.jpg (http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Homebrew.jpg)
Now he has yet to share his method for getting it all to work, but he did post video proof (https://twitter.com/smealum/status/632716339187216384) and promised to share more soon. The hack will allow 3DS owners to download unofficial apps and software for the 3DS, it also removes the region lock on games.
Lastly, the exploit will also allow for emulation, which is a somewhat controversial topic, particularly since Nintendo sells older titles through the eShop. You can find a sneak peak at the instructions for getting Homebrew software running, HERE. (https://twitter.com/smealum/status/633015892922646528)

Nintendo Readies Smaller 'New Nintendo 3DS' For U.S. Debut

Nintendo (http://hothardware.com/tags/nintendo) began selling its super sized (and confusingly named) "New Nintendo 3DS XL (http://hothardware.com/news/confusingly-named-new-nintendo-3ds-xl-headed-to-us-february-13-for-200)" handheld console in the U.S. market back in February of this year for $200, and later this month, the regular version will available too. Set for a September 25 release, the more compact version will debut at $220 as part of a special bundle.

The bundle will include the handheld console itself (obviously) plus the upcoming Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer game (download version, not a physical copy), two themed cover plates, and a single Amiibo card. Never heard of an Amiibo card? They have the same functionality as an Amiibo figure (unlocks in-game content), but come in card form.

If you prefer the larger XL model, Nintendo is also getting ready to release a Hyrule Edition New Edition 3DS XL system that will be available on October 30, 2015, just three days before the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes (not included). The Hyrule Edition New Edition 3DS XL will sell for $200 MSRP and is a GameStop exclusive.

"More than 15 million systems in the Nintendo 3DS family have been sold in the U.S. alone," said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing. "These new models offer additional fun ways to experience some of the great upcoming Nintendo 3DS games launching in the next few months."

Finally, Nintendo also said it's planning to release three new WiiRemote Plus controllers themed after Bowser, Toad, and Yoshi. GameStop gets exclusive dibs on these too and will sell them for $40 MSRP.

Nintendo And The Surprising Success Of The 3DS (http://www.hardocp.com/news/2015/12/12/nintendo_surprising_success_3ds/)

Nintendo’s Executive VP of Sales and Marketing has disclosed that the 3DS is doing very well (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-switch/wp/2015/12/09/nintendo-and-the-surprising-success-of-the-3ds/)—in fact, sales are going up, which is interesting in light of the impact that smartphone games have made on the industry.

Nintendo 3DS is here to stay. Let me throw out a number that might surprise you. So far, on a global basis, Nintendo 3DS has sold more hardware than PS4 and Xbox One—combined. Most people find this shocking.

Original Pokemon Trading Card game to get anniversary re-release (http://www.kitguru.net/gaming/matthew-wilson/original-pokemon-trading-card-game-to-get-anniversary-re-release/)

The first series of Pokémon Trading Cards is set to get a re-release, just in time for the 20th anniversary of the series. The original set of trading cards will be released once again on the 27th of February, alongside the re-releases of Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow on the 3DS.
This information came directly from the Pokemon Trading Card team based in Japan. Unfortunately though, there is no word on a western release just yet. The entire set will contain 60 cards, along with a rubber game mat for 715 Yen.
http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Screen-Shot-2015-12-29-at-10.05.20.png (http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Screen-Shot-2015-12-29-at-10.05.20.png)
Designs of the cards will remain identical to what they were back in 1996 when the game first launched. This is all part of a continued effort to mark the 20th anniversary of the franchise, a move that also included the launch of special edition pokemon 2DS systems.

Windows 95 can boot up on a Nintendo 3DS handheld

Homebrew creations never cease to amaze me. Just this week we saw hackers jailbreak a PS4 to run Linux and play a Pokemon handheld game (http://www.tweaktown.com/news/49326/hackers-play-pokemon-run-linux-jailbroken-playastation-4/index.html), opening the doors for current-gen homebrew creations. Now those enterprising console-crackers have found a way to get Windows 95 to successfully run on Nintendo's New 3DS XL handheld, showing the versatility of today's gaming hardware.

<iframe width="781" height="469" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/nu3_X6HcVrI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The honors go to a modder named Shutterbug2000, who posted up proof of Windows 95 running on the handheld (http://gbatemp.net/threads/windows-95-on-n3ds.407539/) onto the GBA Temp forums. How exactly would you go about getting a 20-year-old Windows operating system to run on a modern video game system? Shutterbug explains:

"Back a while ago, I tried compiling the dosbox from libretro, and using retroarch to emulate dosbox. Yet, every time, it froze on a rainbow glitchy mess. [Then] I tried it on my n3ds, and it just worked," Shutterbug2000 said in a forum response. "So, I think the o3ds just isn't powerful enough to run dosbox, or there's not enough RAM. At it's core, this is just libretro/retroarch dosbox. But I figured, hey, everyone want's Windows on their 3DS, right?"

Although Windows 95 technically boots up on a New 3DS XL, you can't really do much of anything just yet. That will likely change over the coming weeks as curious homebrewers tweak and tinker with the software, making a humorous and entertaining project out of the classic Windows platform. This isn't the first time that a DS has been hacked: Nintendo's 3DS handheld has no stranger to hacks, and is a popular target due to its versatility.

Using programs like Tubehax, gamers have turned the notoriously locked handheld into portable entertainment libraries, with thousands of classic old-school NES and Genesis games as well as movies and TV shows.

Back in August of last year, notorious hacker smealum embedded a 3DS exploit into the official YouTube app (http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2015-08/17/nintendo-3ds-region-hack-homebrew-exploit), opening up a clever backdoor entrance to access homebrew software. Nintendo has always been one step behind jailbreaks, but the Japanese gaming giant has consistently thwarted these attempts with new firmware updates.

SNES games are finally coming to the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console (http://www.tweaktown.com/news/50856/snes-games-finally-coming-nintendo-3ds-virtual-console/index.html)

But only to the New 3DS. Older 3DS owners are left in the dust and won't have access to the SNES titles coming to the Virtual Console. For those that do have the newest model, they'll be able to enjoy a fairly good-sized catalog of games that originally were released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

http://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/5/0/50856_1_snes-games-finally-coming-nintendo-3ds-virtual-console.jpg (http://www.tweaktown.com/image.php?image=imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/5/0/50856_1_snes-games-finally-coming-nintendo-3ds-virtual-console_full.jpg)

During the Nintendo Direct yesterday, they were proud to announce that they'll be rolling out a number of new titles to the Virtual Console. Super Mario World, F-Zero and Pilot Wings will be available starting yesterday (March 3rd) while Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario Kart and Earthbound will make an appearance on March 24th and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Metroid and Donkey Kong Country 2 will all be available on April 14th.

Even though the games are also currently available on the Wii U's Virtual Console, there isn't a cross-buy mechanism in place. You'll have to buy each version separately.

Nintendo explains why only the New 3DS can play SNES games

It was a bit concerning when it was annoucned that only the newest of Nintendo's 3DS models could support playing SNES games through the Virtual Console, but apparantly there's a really good reason for this.

http://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/5/0/50988_1_nintendo-explains-new-3ds-play-snes-games.jpg

And those reasons are technical in nature. The CPU, though only slightly less powerful than the new 3DS, just isn't quite powerful enough to actually handle SNES games at all. Those games are emulated using a Perfect-Pixel mode which allows you to play them at the original resolution that they were made in, which theoretically shouldn't be such a technical hurdle. But with the added overhead of emulation in an already limited environment, that just adds to the processing requirements, making it a bit more difficult.

But then, perhaps it's that they don't want to compromise on the experience that users would have. Why let the original 3DS users play it with a horrible experiences, because that would only lead to accusations of "unoptimized" games and poor development when in fact RAM might be limited by just enough to make a substantial difference, or that one more usable core is needed to make it run at the original framerate, and not a frame below. In retrospect, it's not really a bad idea to limit it if you want your customers to actually enjoy the experience and not complain too much.
