Sony’s SmartWatch 3 Gets Stylish, Stainless Steel Makeover

Sony’s SmartWatch 3 (http://hothardware.com/tags/smartwatch-3) was released just a few months ago, but was quickly overlooked as more stylish Android Wear (http://hothardware.com/tags/android-wear) devices — namely the Motorola Moto 360 (http://hothardware.com/tags/moto-360), LG G Watch (http://hothardware.com/tags/g-watch) R, and ASUS ZenWatch (http://hothardware.com/tags/zenwatch) — started hitting the market. It’s hard to fault consumers for favoring the more stylish designs of Sony’s competitors, despite the fact that the SmartWatch 3 comes with built-in GPS – a feature that only Sony can boast at this early stage in the Android Wear game.

Well, Sony has obviously listened to its critics and this week announced a new version of the SmartWatch 3 that’s constructed out of metal. The flexible rubber/silicone band has been tossed in favor of stainless steel, and the result is a smartwatch that throws off a classier and more expensive vibe.

All of the specs from the original SmartWatch 3 carryover including the 1.6-inch 320x320 display, 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 4GB of internal storage, 420 mAh battery, and IP68 water resistance. But Sony does have one additional trick up its sleeve, which is a new holder that allows you to attach your own 24mm watchbands.

The stainless steel version of the SmartWatch 3 will launch next month, and Sony has yet to give us a price for the device. However, there is no doubt that it will cost more than the standard $249 model (we’d guess $299).

Sony Receives Four IF Design Awards for 2015, One of Them for the Xperia Z3

http://cdn.eteknix.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/sony.png
Sony Mobile seems to have gained four IF Design Awards for 2015. The awards were given out to Sony’s Xperia Z2, the SmartWatch 3, LifeLong app and the Xperia Z3.
Sony’s Xperia Z2 appears to have been appreciated for its rounded corners and light weight, making the slate easy to handle. Another key feature for its awards was the minimum number of components used, the water and dust proofing, as well as attention to detail, receiving the IF Design Award 2015, Discipline Product – Gold.

“It is particularly difficult to stand out with a product like a tablet – but exactly this was achieved with the extremely flat Xperia Z2. The rounded edges and the ultra-light weight (only 439 grams) make the Z2 particularly easy to handle. The amount of components has been reduced to a minimum; details such as the connection of frame and back are excellently executed – furthermore, the Z2 is water and dust proof. The result is an honest, outstanding device.”-IF Design Jury
Sony also received IF Design Awards last year for its Xperia Z Ultra phablet, Sony SmartWatch 2, Sony Xperia C, Bluetooth Handset SBH52, and Xperia Z1 Compact.

Virgin Atlantic Aircraft Engineers To Trial Sony SmartWatch 3 And SmartEyeglass Wearables
The wearables (http://hothardware.com/tags/wearables) market is still relatively new and we haven't really seen many real-world applications, especially for devices like smart glasses that have been stuck in various prototype and beta stages. That's about to change as Virgin Atlantic (http://hothardware.com/tags/virgin-atlantic) begins trialing Sony's (http://hothardware.com/tags/sony) SmartWear devices as part of a new partnership between the two firms.

As part of the partnership, Virgin Atlantic's plane engineers at London's Heathrow airport will receive Sony's latest (and rather stylish) SmartWatch 3 (http://hothardware.com/news/sonys-smartwatch-3-gets-stylish-stainless-steel-makeover) and SmartEyeglass Developer Edition SED-E1 (http://hothardware.com/news/with-google-taking-a-glass-timeout-sony-launches-smarteyeglass-developer-edition) devices next week, plus a smartphone or tablet. The goal is to streamline communications and add a level of efficiency to technical assistance.

"We are proud of our recent innovation work to provide the best possible experience for our customer facing roles and we’re pleased to now be exploring how new technology can contribute towards our essential operations procedures. It’s a great way to empower our people by providing instant access to the information they need to be more effective in their roles," said Phil Maher, Director of Operations at Virgin Atlantic.

Using Sony's SmartEyeglass, onsite engineers can stream video to technicians in a control room in real-time. The technicians will be able to view the video through an app on their tablet or smartphone, and then provide detailed assistance. Meanwhile, SmartWatch 3 devices will serve as continuous activity logs, as well as give engineers on the runway additional ob details and changes as needed.
