China is set to overtake the United States to become the world's largest online gaming market by 2016, according to a report from Taipei-based Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC). The market value of the global online gaming industry reached over USD 80 billion in 2014, up nearly 8 percent year-on-year, while the Chinese market is expected to grow in value from USD 16.1 billion in 2014 to USD 24.5 billion in 2016. Chinese internet company Tencent currently dominates the online gaming market, accounting for around 50-60 percent, and is unlikely to be challenged in the short run, said MIC. The report also predicts that the popularity of web-based games with no downloads required will diminish, whereas the share of mobile games is expected to grow to 35 percent in 2015, up from 25 percent in 2014.
