Fable Legends is going to be a free to play game (http://www.kitguru.net/gaming/matthew-wilson/fable-legends-is-going-to-be-a-free-to-play-game/)

There have been rumors surrounding Fable Legends and it launching as a free to play game, the speculation can now end as Lionhead has confirmed that both the PC and Xbox One versions of the game will be free, with rotating heroes to play.Much like Heroes of the Storm or League of Legends, there will be a rota system in place, making select heroes free for a week or two and then switching them out for new ones. Alternatively, you could just buy each hero that you like to play. There are no plans to include premium in-game currency or time limiters in game.
http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/fable-1-fable-legends-on-xbox-one-brings-new-life-to-this-glorious-series-e1424965169842.jpeg (http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/fable-1-fable-legends-on-xbox-one-brings-new-life-to-this-glorious-series-e1424965169842.jpeg)
The experience and items you earn while playing as a hero in rotation will be kept so that you never lose any progress. You can keep trying out heroes as they become free or you can buy permanent access to them, either with in-game gold, which is earned through playing the game, or with real money.
Fable Legends Creative Director, David Eckleberry, commented on the move to free to play: “The right version of F2P is a very good thing for the world. The wrong version is kind of an abomination, but if you’re very fair to your players and they can play as much as they want, then it seems right.”
Fable Legends doesn’t have an exact release date yet but we do know that it will feature cross-platform multiplayer between the PC and Xbox One.

Fable Legends will come to Windows 10 using DirectX 12 and built on the Unreal 4 engine
[Players will be able to earn treasure and customisation items in the game, or purchase them with money. Likewise, Villain characters will be able to purchase new creatures and traps through gameplay or spending cash. Fable Legends was recently announced for PC, and will support cross-platform multiplayer with the Xbox One edition.

Fable Legends is the first known title to be using DirectX 12, and is built on the Unreal 4 engine. It will release for the Xbox One and Windows 10, sometime later this year, although no specific date has been given yet. There will very likely be some new information regarding the game at GDC (http://wccftech.com/gdc-2015-expect/), early next month, probably part of Microsoft’s DirectX 12 and Windows 10 presentation.
We will bring you any additional information on Fable Legends as soon as it becomes available, as well as coverage of the GDC event.

Microsoft confirms Fable Legends is a free-to-play game

Microsoft has confirmed (http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2015/02/26/fable-legends-will-be-free-to-play-and-cross-playable-on-xbox-one-with-xbox-live-gold-and-windows-10/) that Lionhead's four-versus-one cross-platform RPG title Fable Legends will be free-to-play exclusively its Xbox One and Windows 10 PC platforms.
The studio has been inspired by Riot and its success with MOBA League of Legends, in terms of gameplay and how consumers will pay for it. Lionhead will rotate the four heroes that will be available to play for free every fortnight, whilst allowing players to unlock and add them to their stable for permanent use with in-game silver earned through quests or using real world cash.
http://hexus.net/media/uploaded/2015/2/5ac686bd-3d74-418c-9b53-dc72fe90cacf.jpg
Not a pay-to-win game
"There are free-to-play games like World of Tanks out there that are very much a pay-to-win kind of experience," David Eckelberry, Fable Legends game director told Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-02-26-fable-legends-is-free-to-play). "For me the better ones for the customers are the ones where you get to enjoy all of the content without paying money. And then you pay if you want to."
The rotation of characters will not affect the player's hero and equipment progress, allowing them to start where they left off each time their character returns. Native creatures to each quest will also be available to play for free for those who prefer to play as the villain. However, in-game currency or real money will be required to unlock non-native creatures to maps that wouldn't usually support them. In addition, traps and gates and magic standing stones will be up for grabs, as well as chests of randomised equipment including weapons, augments, armour, items and potions.
http://hexus.net/media/uploaded/2015/2/8a549968-6bb3-42c8-a62a-a9ed2ca3f752.jpg
Some customisations including hair and outfits will be unlockable via silver coins or real money, but there will also be some that can only be purchased with cash. Gamers will need an Xbox Live Gold membership to play Fable Legends on Xbox One, where progress and items earned could be synced with the PC version. The title will feature (http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/01/21/fable-legends-has-cross-play-on-pc-and-xbox-one) cross-platform multiplayer between Xbox One and PCs running Windows 10, and Lionhead have plans to add new heroes, creatures, quests and arch villains to the game in varying seasons.

Fable Legends will be Powered by Xbox Cloud Compute

During a GDC 2015 session, titled Fable Legends: Cross-device Gameplay with Xbox Live (http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/GDC/GDC-2015/Fable-Legends-Cross-device-Gameplay-with-Xbox-Live), Lionhead’s Engineering Lead Raymond Arifianto, detailed more information regarding Fable Legends’ server structure. The team initially tested P2P networking, but decided to go with dedicated servers in order to provide the best experience possible for users. It will be using the Xbox cloud compute, similarly to Titanfall and Forza Motorsport.
http://cdn3.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Fable-Legends-635x356.jpeg (http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Fable-Legends.jpeg)
This will result in multiple advantages, such as extra security, and being able to run all the simulation, physics, damage calculations etc. on the server-side. There’s also the added benefit of no host advantage, and the added bonus of solving potential NAT issues.

http://cdn3.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Fable-Legends-25-635x357.png

http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Fable-Legends-24-635x373.png

Arifianto explained that a platform wide solution for cross-device voice chat between Windows 10 and Xbox One will be available later this year. Fable Legends will be completely platform agnostic, so gamers will be unable to see what platform others are using. All progress, achievements and purchases will carry over between different versions of the game, something quite interesting. Fable Legends will be the first DirectX 12 game in production, and the first Fable game with a multiplayer focus and a Free-to-Play model.

Set several hundred years before the events of the first Fable game, Fable Legends takes you back to Fable’s dark fairytale roots, to a time when Albion is young and full of raw magic. The Old Kingdom has fallen, and a wilder land grows out of the ruins, dangerous and ripe for adventure. Patchworks of primitive villages and towns huddle together in a sea of hostile wilderness.

Fable Legends director discusses decision to support DLCs

Lionhead Studios and Microsoft Studios are preparing for the launch of Fable Legends, built on the Unreal Engine 4, which will be a free-to-play game. Gamers won't be initially required to pay to play, but can purchase downloadable content (DLC) if they want new quests and other content to play.

image: http://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/4/6/46013_01_fable-legends-director-discusses-decision-support-dlcs.jpg (http://www.tweaktown.com/image.php?image=imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/4/6/46013_01_fable-legends-director-discusses-decision-support-dlcs_full.jpg)
http://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/4/6/46013_01_fable-legends-director-discusses-decision-support-dlcs.jpg

"We launch the game later this year with a certain amount of content but then we're going to continue to release new content every single month, new quests, new stories to play," said David Eckelberry, director of Fable Legends, in a statement to Newsbeat. "Some of that you can purchase, some you can unlock in the game and some you just get for free."

Even though so-called freemium games appear to have some popularity (http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/7150/free-play-gaming-sustainable-ecosystem/index.html), gamers have shown frustration when they must pay to essentially complete the gaming experience. However, it's a thought that is not lost on Eckelberry and said game developers have to "be responsible" and it "would be wrong" to build half a game and then charge gamers.

Fable Legends is scheduled to launch later this year for PC and the Microsoft Xbox One.

Fable Legends game director discusses DLCs with TweakTown

Anytime I've written about Fable Legends in the past few months, it seems talk always turned to downloadable content (DLC) in free-to-play games (http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/7150/free-play-gaming-sustainable-ecosystem/index.html). Lionhead Studios is going in a bit of a new direction with Fable Legends, and wanted to try to clear the air a bit regarding the controversial inclusion of DLCs (http://www.tweaktown.com/news/46013/fable-legends-director-discusses-decision-support-dlcs/index.html) in its upcoming free-to-play action role-playing game. We recently spoke with David Eckelberry, game director at Lionhead Studios (http://www.lionhead.com/), so here is what he had to say.

image: http://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/4/6/46267_01_fable-legends-game-director-discusses-dlcs-tweaktown.jpg (http://www.tweaktown.com/image.php?image=imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/4/6/46267_01_fable-legends-game-director-discusses-dlcs-tweaktown_full.jpg)
http://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/4/6/46267_01_fable-legends-game-director-discusses-dlcs-tweaktown.jpg

The addition of DLCs brings a high level uncertainty among many gamers, and some of you have already questioned it regarding Fable Legends.

"That's a reasonable thing to be unsure of. I'm unsure about free-to-play in some games!" said David Eckelberry told TweakTown. "I believe it's up to the game developer. Some games I love are free-to-play, and I don't think it's a coincidence that first and foremost they are good games, regardless of how they get to market. It's also not a coincidence that these games seem legitimately fair: they don't let a player buy his way to victories, and the things you can purchase seem pretty fairly priced."

Eckelberry shared what Lionhead Studios expected when developing the game, and why gamers should be willing to give it a shot.

image: http://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/4/6/46267_02_fable-legends-game-director-discusses-dlcs-tweaktown.jpg (http://www.tweaktown.com/image.php?image=imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/4/6/46267_02_fable-legends-game-director-discusses-dlcs-tweaktown_full.jpg)
http://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/4/6/46267_02_fable-legends-game-director-discusses-dlcs-tweaktown.jpg

That's the space we're committed to landing in. We want to make a quality, AAA game that has a community of happy players - that's a real reason we've decided to be free to play and reach a bigger audience than ever on Xbox One and on Windows 10."

Regardless of how well Fable Legends does after its public launch, the addition of DLCs seems like it will always remain a controversial topic. TweakTown asked Eckelberry about some of the benefits gamers can expect from the adoption of DLCs:

"In addition to reaching more players and making it easier for more of your friends to share the game, we want to support Fable Legends for years to come with content that keeps exploring Albion and introducing more fun elements to the game. That means we will continue to release new Heroes, new creatures, new quests, and other new features for our players to love. And all of these will either be totally free, such as the new quests, or earnable in-game. We couldn't do that if we sold a disk for $60."

image: http://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/4/6/46267_03_fable-legends-game-director-discusses-dlcs-tweaktown.jpg (http://www.tweaktown.com/image.php?image=imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/4/6/46267_03_fable-legends-game-director-discusses-dlcs-tweaktown_full.jpg)
http://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/4/6/46267_03_fable-legends-game-director-discusses-dlcs-tweaktown.jpg

As for what gamers can expect when they load Fable Legends, whether on the Xbox One or PC, Eckelberry shared his thoughts: "The commitment we're making to our players to be open, fair, and generous. Most obviously, that means that everything that offers a gameplay advantage can be earned through play, and all of your XP, levels, and abilities have to be earned, not purchased."

Fable Legends is currently in closed beta on Xbox One, and the studio is averaging an invite of ten thousand or more every week. After the public release of Windows 10 on July 29, a PC closed beta will take place - and everyone will be able to download and play Fable Legends later this year. Visit the Fable Legends (https://www.fablelegends.com/) website if you want to sign up for the beta.

DX12 Powered Fable Legends Gets New Screens, Windows 10 Beta Later This Month

Lionhead Studios chose a bold, new direction for its upcoming Fable game. Unlike the previous installments, Fable Legends will be a multiplayer oriented title where ideally four player heroes will band together against the player controlled villain; it will be also possible to play alone with and against AI, though.
The Windows 10 Closed Beta of Fable Legends Starts in AugustFable Legends also has many other features that make it rather unique. For instance, it’s one of the very first games to support DirectX12, Microsoft’s new API that should let you squeeze more performance out of your hardware thanks to its improvements. Moreover, it’s going to be available on both Xbox One and Windows 10, with players able to play with each other and to retain progress if they want to use both platforms.
The game will also be Free-to-Play(F2P), meaning that you won’t have to pay a dime to try it if you aren’t totally committed at first. Lionhead has promised that the in-game cash shop will be mostly cosmetic, and all of the content in there can be unlocked by simply playing as well.

While Fable Legends has been in Closed Beta on Xbox One since late 2014, Windows 10 gamers will be happy to know that the first invitations will be going out later this month, as announced on the official forums (http://forum.lionhead.com/yaf_postst6899_Fable-Legends-Windows-10-Beta-Starts-This-Month.aspx). By the way, you can still sign up here (https://www.fablelegends.com/#signup)!
Check out these new Gamescom 2015 media – a trio of images and a new trailer – to feast your eyes on the stunning Unreal Engine 4 powered game (scheduled for release this Holiday).

In Fable Legends you will never be alone
In “Fable Legends”, you’re never completely alone. You can play the game single player, with a party of three heroic AI companions that follow your lead through stories and adventures. Or you can play cooperatively with up to three friends and discover the game’s quests and content together. Play whatever style you want, when you want. After all, you’re the Hero. And just what kind of Hero you choose to play is up to you. “Fable Legends” takes you back to a time when Albion is teeming with Heroes, so there’s bound to be one for you. Fearless warriors. Cunning tricksters. Masters of Will. Paragons of virtue. Heartless mercenaries. Intoxicated brawlers. Chicken chasers. They’re all here, and many more besides. You’ll be able to customize your abilities, alter your appearance, and advance your Hero by earning experience and finding new armour, weapons, and treasures.

Fable Legends Delayed; Open Beta To Release In Spring 2016

Some might have already seen it coming, but Fable Legends has been delayed. The open beta for the free-to-play RPG will release in Spring 2016.
http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/fable_legends_glory-635x357.jpg (http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/fable_legends_glory.jpg)
Developer Lionhead Studios officially announced the delay on their website (https://www.fablelegends.com/news/fable-legends-to-release-open-beta-in-spring-2016) today. According to Lionhead, they didn’t anticipate how big Fable Legends is becoming, and the game is taking more time than initially thought.

Fable Legends is coming together well and it’s a lot of fun. But we think that we can make it even better. So we’ve decided to extend our closed beta to continue to listen to feedback from our players and add features and polish that will make a real difference.
Fable Legends free-to-play on PC & Xbox One Development on Fable Legends began back in 2012, and was officially announced in May 2013. Earlier this year, Microsoft announced that the RPG will be a free-to-play title for Xbox One and PC.

A paragraph from the news, taken from Lionhead Studios can be found below:

We’re excited to invite an additional 100,000 fans to the Fable Legends closed beta over the next few weeks, prioritising those that have been waiting the longest. If you want to get in on the closed beta, sign up at FableLegends.com (https://www.fablelegends.com).
To be honest, we didn’t anticipate just how big Fable Legends is becoming. It’s simply the most ambitious game we’ve ever created at Lionhead. We’ve built a unique and innovative multiplayer experience combining RPG and RTS gameplay which allows you to play, and use your gear seamlessly, across Xbox One and Windows 10. On top of this, we’ve built a beautiful new world full of grand stories and adventures. And it’s taking more time than we thought.
The team is working exceptionally hard and we’re proud of how far the game has come. We’re operating our closed beta 24/7 and have added lots more features, quests, creatures, and heroes to play. Hundreds of thousands of fans have participated in the beta so far, and we can’t wait to open it up for all of you to play. To achieve our aspirations for Fable Legends, we’ve moved our open beta release to spring of 2016.
An actual release date for the game hasn’t been specified, but we’re hoping for a release later in 2016. Fable Legends is one of the first titles to make use of DX12.

Fable Legends Leak Shows Microtransactions; Lionhead Giving Out Beta Codes Every Day

Just last week, Lionhead announced (http://wccftech.com/fable-legends-delayed-open-beta-spring-2016/) that Fable Legends had been delayed. The Open Beta will now take place in Spring 2016, since Lionhead didn’t anticipate how big the game is becoming and now requires more time to polish it properly.

To achieve our aspirations for Fable Legends, we’ve moved our open beta release to spring of 2016.
A leak from the closed beta appeared today on Reddit, though, giving gamers the first look at Fable Legends microtransactions. This isn’t surprising, since the game is Free-to-Play and the developer needs to monetize it, but it gives you an idea of how much gold you can get for real money from the Bank of Brightlodge.

That said, any fears of P2W (Pay-to-Win) have been already addressed by Lionhead in their FAQ (https://www.fablelegends.com/ask-the-devs/free-to-play), since apparently anything that has a gameplay impact can be earned by playing.

You’ll be able to play Fable Legends from beginning to end for free. That means the whole story as it stands, plus any additional quests/storylines we release after launch will all be free.
Anything that has some kind of impact on gameplay can be bought with the silver you earn by playing the game. Anything that you can only buy with gold (the currency you’ll be able to purchase with real money) won’t have an impact on gameplay (so, stuff like cosmetic changes to your Hero, as an example).
You may not have to wait for next Spring to find out for yourself, though. In fact, Lionhead will be giving away Fable Legends beta codes on the official website (https://www.fablelegends.com/) every day until January 4th at 3PM EST.
There’s even a countdown to help you track how much time is left before the next giveaway. Of course, you may want to register an account beforehand so that you can get a code and rush to redeem it before anyone else has the chance to.
In case you missed it, here’s our detailed Fable Legends DX12 benchmark (http://wccftech.com/fable-legends-dx12-benchmark-results/) on PC and an exclusive interview (http://wccftech.com/lionhead-dx12-features-fable-legends/) with Lionhead on implementing DirectX 12 in the game.

Fable Legends DX12 Up To 40% Faster Performance; Xbox One “Visual Bar”Pushed Higher

Fable Legends will be using DirectX12 (DX12), and according Lionhead’s studio director, Stuart Whyte, the performance gain from using DX12 is quite a bit, compared to DX11. This doesn’t only apply to the PC version of the game, but the Xbox One also benefits quite a bit from using DX12.
http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Fable-Legends-gamescom-2015-Celeste-Nymphs-jpg-635x357.jpg (http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Fable-Legends-gamescom-2015-Celeste-Nymphs-jpg.jpg)
Whyte said this in a recent exclusive interview with website BidnessETC (http://www.bidnessetc.com/62286-inside-fable-legends-an-exclusive-interview-with-stuart-whyte/). In the interview, Lionhead’s studio director was asked why Fable Legends is using DX12. According Whyte, anything that helps improve visual quality in a game, will be loved by developers and players. By using Microsoft’s new DirectX technology, the development team was able to achieve “a significant amount of horsepower – resulting in increased visual fidelity, higher frame rates, and improved shadows and effects.”
Whyte added that, depending on the graphic card used, a performance improvement of “up to 40%” was achieved, compared to DX11 performance.
Fable Legends DX12 On Xbox One; Visual bar pushed higher While Fable Legends was initially announced as an Xbox One game, the game will also be released for PC (Windows 10) and will allow cross-play between both platforms. On several occasions, Microsoft has stated that the Xbox One will benefit from DX12, but it won’t change the console’s graphics capabilities (http://wccftech.com/phil-spencer-directx-1-xbox-one-hardware-graphics/).

Fable Legends Uses Dynamic Procedural Foliage To Push Visual Fidelity
Fable Legends from developer Lionhead Studios, will be using foliage physics to “push the boundaries of visual fidelity” for the game.
http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Fable-Legends-21-635x357.png (http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Fable-Legends-21.png)
Earlier this week we already reported that Lionhead is striving to increase visual fidelity (http://wccftech.com/fable-legends-dx12-40-faster-performance-xbox-visual-barpushed-higher/), while also improving the game’s framerates with the use of DX12. According to Lionhead’s studio director, Stuart Whyte, the performance gain of using DX12 on PC is quite considerable, compared to using DX11. On PC, performance gains of up to 40% were benchmarked, while the Xbox One version also seems to benefit from DX12.
Pushing visual fidelity within Fable Legends through foliage physics To push the game’s visual fidelity, Lionhead is making use of foliage physics to “increase the richness of ground surface cover”. During the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in March this year, Lionhead’s senior programmer, Sam Swain, will be talking (http://schedule.gdconf.com/session/creating-lush-dynamic-procedural-foliage-for-fable-legends) about how the team worked to push the boundaries of visual fidelity within Fable Legends. The organized programming, and visual arts session, is called “Creating Lush Dynamic Procedural Foliage for Fable Legends”, and down below you’ll find the session’s description.
http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Fable-Legends-17-635x373.png (http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Fable-Legends-17.png)

To continue to push the boundaries of visual fidelity for Fable Legends, we have worked to increase the richness of ground surface cover and accelerate artist authoring workflow. The talk will describe the various procedural tools and techniques, in-editor and at run-time, that have been employed to provide a fully dynamic mesh instancing system, non-destructive surface editing capabilities, and the power that such tools bring. There will be many examples of what has been achieved and learned from adopting these approaches and how they have behaved alongside the more traditional approaches also used.

Takeaway
Gain an insight into the tooling and technology brought in to extend and supplement Unreal Engine 4. See how procedural techniques can be used alongside traditional content authoring approaches, and the benefits (and problems) they can bring to a large game project.
Intended Audience
An intermediate level talk, covering a mixture of tools and technology. You will get to see how the tooling was developed to put the technology in content creators hands. Starting from an engineering perspective, this talk will look into how the techniques were implemented and integrated into Unreal Engine 4.
Back in October of 2015, we reported on the DX12 benchmark results (http://wccftech.com/fable-legends-dx12-benchmark-results/) for Fable Legends. We also had the opportunity to ask Lionhead about the DX12 features used in Fable Legends, check out what we’ve found out right here (http://wccftech.com/lionhead-dx12-features-fable-legends/).

Fable Legends Officially Cancelled, Lionhead Studios May Be Closing Soon

Today is a very bad day for fans of the Fable series and its developer Lionhead Studios. A few minutes ago, Microsoft has detailed (http://news.xbox.com/2016/03/07/microsoft-studios-changes-uk-denmark/) changes for UK and Denmark studios, and the team behind the series is among those affected by the changes.
http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/fable_legends_glory-635x357.jpg
According to what Microsoft has revealed today, development of the next entry of the series, Fable Legends, is now officially cancelled, with the company currently in discussion with employees about the closure of Lionhead Studios in the UK. Additionally, Microsoft confirmed that Press Play Studios in Denmark, the team behind games such as Max: The Curse of Brotherhood and Kalimba, are getting closed, and development of Project Knoxville halted.

After much consideration we have decided to cease development on Fable Legends, and are in discussions with employees about the proposed closure of Lionhead Studios in the UK. Additionally, we will close Press Play Studios in Denmark, and sunset development on Project Knoxville.
These have been tough decisions and we have not made them lightly, nor are they a reflection on these development teams – we are incredibly fortunate to have the talent, creativity and commitment of the people at these studios. The Lionhead Studios team has delighted millions of fans with the Fable series over the past decade. Press Play imbued the industry with a unique creative spirit behind games like Max: The Curse of Brotherhood and Kalimba, which both captured passionate fans. These changes are taking effect as Microsoft Studios continues to focus its investment and development on the games and franchises that fans find most exciting and want to play.

The cancellation of Fable Legends comes as a surprise, considering the team has been working hard on it for some time. Just one month ago, we have reported (http://wccftech.com/fable-legends-dx12-40-faster-performance-xbox-visual-barpushed-higher/) how Lionhead was striving to increase visual fidelity while also improving the game’s framerate with the use of DirectX 12. With today’s news coming unexpectedly, we should expect more details on the matter to emerge soon enough.

The recent news (http://wccftech.com/fable-legends-officially-cancelled-lionhead-studios-closing/) of Fable Legends being cancelled and Lionhead Studios shutting down are taking the gaming industry by storm.
While Fable Legends had a troubled development phase and a similar outcome was not quite inconceivable, Microsoft’s decision to shut down Lionhead entirely is definitely unexpected. The first reactions have already appeared on Twitter and one former developer in particular, Daniel Gray (who worked as Producer on Milo&Kate and Fable 3), went pretty hard on Microsoft calling them the destroyer of first party studios and even picturing a dedicated executioner in Redmond for these purposes.

While the sadness and anger at the news is understandable, when reviewing the recent history of Microsoft Game Studios there really haven’t been such high profile closures in the last few years.
The biggest ones were likely the closure of FASA Studio and Ensemble/Aces Studios, but these happened in 2007 and 2009, respectively. However, since then they’ve built 343 Industries, The Coalition, Decisive Games and acquired Mojang, while also signing a multi-year, multi-title publishing deal with Undead Labs (the folks behind State of Decay).
In these cases, the worst situation is not consumers losing a game but rather game developers losing their jobs. However, it looks like there will be several offers on the table for Lionhead folks. Gray himself called the studio a breeding ground for awesomeness and already said he’d be interested in hiring people for ustwo (http://ustwo.com/).

Yesterday we were shocked with the news that Microsoft was going to shut down (http://www.tweaktown.com/news/50907/lionhead-studios-closing-down/index.html)Lionhead Studios and cancel (http://www.tweaktown.com/news/50908/unexpectedly-fable-legends-cancelled/index.html) their titular product, Fable Legends, but they've announced they won't be shutting down the current beta immediately, and will let players that are already in, continue to play until April.

No new players are being let into the beta, but if you're already in, and enjoying yourself, then you'll be able to continue (http://forum.lionhead.com/yaf_postst11810_IMPORTANT-INFORMATION-ON-FABLE-LEGENDS.aspx) your adventures until April 13th at 3:00PM GMT. After that, the servers will officially be shut down and the game will be gone for good.

So far there's been no word as to whether we'll see Fable be taken up by another studio, but we do know that for the time being, development has ceased completely. Fable Legends was a showcase of the capabilities of DirectX 12 and was one of the best examples of it too. It didn't use asynchronous compute quite to its fullest, but it did end up using it right. It's sad to see a game that's also quite fun to play, wander into oblivion.

Fable Legends Will Remain Playable Until April with Closed Beta – Eligible Players Will Get a Refund

In case you missed out on this huge, bitter news (http://wccftech.com/fable-legends-officially-cancelled-lionhead-studios-closing/) yesterday; Microsoft officially killed the long-in-development title Fable Legends by halting development work on the game, and is now “in discussions” to shut down the Fable developer Lionhead Studios. At the time of its cancellation, the free-to-play co-op role playing game was undergoing closed beta testing phase, which according to the latest announcement, will remain open to participants for a few more weeks before officially shutting down on April 13 at 3:00 p.m. GMT.
http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Fable-Legends-635x357.jpg (http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Fable-Legends.jpg)
Fable Legends’ Closed Beta Will Stay Active Up Until April 13 – Those Who are Eligible for a Refund Will Be Contacted via Email Following Microsoft’s announcement regarding the cancellation of Fable Legends, Lionhead Studios has published a detailed post on its forums (http://forum.lionhead.com/yaf_postst11810_IMPORTANT-INFORMATION-ON-FABLE-LEGENDS.aspx), discussing the proposed closure of the studio and revealing when exactly the game will cease to be available. If you already have access to the closed beta, you can continue to play the game for a few more weeks before the plug is officially pulled on 15:00 GMT on Wednesday, April 13. No new players will be added to the beta during this time.

Additionally, from here on out, no player will be able to purchase Gold from Fable Legends’ in-game bank. The studio has promised that those who have already spent real-world currency to purchase Gold, but haven’t spent it in game will receive full refund. Players who are found eligible for a refund will be provided further information in the form of an email within the next 7 days.
Fable Legends was in development exclusively for PC and Xbox One console. The game was originally meant to make it to the market last year through an open beta, but as a result of the feedback that was received from closed beta testers, the open beta was pushed to a spring 2016 release. Fable Legends is not that only game that got canned recently. Project Knoxville was also cancelled, and Press Play Studios, the developer responsible for the game, has been officially closed down. As for Lionhead Studios, Microsoft hasn’t made a clear statement about its closure.
You can read the official press release (http://news.xbox.com/2016/03/07/microsoft-studios-changes-uk-denmark/) about the big changes for Microsoft’s European studios here (http://news.xbox.com/2016/03/07/microsoft-studios-changes-uk-denmark/). Lionhead Didn’t Have the Slightest Idea What Was About to Happen

http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/fablelegends_ogre_party-635x357.jpg (http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/fablelegends_ogre_party.jpg)
Now that the dust cloud surrounding the sudden cancellation of Fable Legends and the shutdown of Lionhead Studios (http://wccftech.com/fable-legends-officially-cancelled-lionhead-studios-closing/) is beginning to fade, a few additional details are becoming clear.
We knew that Microsoft was still not giving any indication about what was about to happen at the recent press event in San Francisco. However, what’s more troubling is that the folks at Lionhead apparently didn’t have any idea until the very last minute.
Just a few hours before the unfortunate announcement, the Community Manager posted this reply (http://forum.lionhead.com/yaf_postsm132787_So-whats-happening-with-this-game.aspx#post132787) when answering to the cry for news on the game:

Whilst we are well aware there is an eagerness for people to have more information and for everyone to play the game, we don’t want to rush something out that will disappoint. We’re taking the time and effort to really review feedback and data and update and improve the game based upon that. Sure, that means a few delays along the way but ultimately it’s better to have a late but good game than an instant but not as good as it could be game.
That’s even true for Lionhead’s key members, in case you’re wondering, as confirmed by Creative Director David Eckleberry (who was often featured in interviews on Fable Legends).

Quite ironically, Microsoft had sent flowers to Mr. Eckelberry’s house just the previous day, possibly to congratulate for his daughter’s birth.

Life is full of absurdity. Yesterday Microsoft delivered flowers to my home to celebrate my daughter's birth. At least I think that was why.

There’s even an unconfirmed report by one of the owners of GameWith (http://game-with.com/) about the Lionhead team receiving the news just as the Xbox Wire post was published, though that’s merely a rumor at this point.

Fable Legends will be playable for beta testers until April 13 at 3PM GMT (http://wccftech.com/fable-legends-beta-stay-online/), and those eligible for a refund for gold purchased in-game will be contacted via email.
Let’s hope that this isn’t the end of the Fable IP, as that would be a real pity.

Fable Legends’ Devs May Continue Working On The Game As Independent Studio

Around a month ago, fans of the Fable series have been hit hard by the official confirmation of the Lionhead’s closure. With the team getting disbanded, development of Fable Legends was also officially cancelled, but it seems like the development of the game may continue, according to a report.
http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Fable-Legends-635x357.jpg
MCV (http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/fable-legends-may-live-on/0165153) has revealed earlier today that it might not be over for Fable Legends. Three Lionhead sources have confirmed that there are currently some talks regarding the game’s future, with contract staff members having been asked whether they would like to continue working on the Fable Legends or just accept the redundacy package and leave by the end of April. According to one of the three sources, certain Liongead employees have proposed continuing development of the game as an independent studio.
Contacted by MCV, a Microsoft representative stated that they are currently in discussions with employees about the proposed closure of the studio, confirming that development of Fable Legends has been ceased.

“We aren’t sharing additional details beyond that we have ceased development on Fable Legends, and are in discussions with employees at Lionhead about our proposed closure of the studio as well.”

Last month’s announcement of Fable Legends ceased development (http://wccftech.com/fable-legends-officially-cancelled-lionhead-studios-closing/) was definitely sudden and unexpected. Earlier this year, we have reported that Lionhead was striving to increase visual fidelity while improving framerate with the use of DX12. (http://wccftech.com/fable-legends-dx12-40-faster-performance-xbox-visual-barpushed-higher/)
Fable Legends was in development for PC and Xbox One. We will let you know about the possible continuation of the game’s development as soon as possible, so stay tuned for all the latest news on Lionhead’s final project.

Fable Legends might not be dead after all. It seems that the supposedly cancelled (http://www.tweaktown.com/news/50908/unexpectedly-fable-legends-cancelled/index.html) project might live on (http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/fable-legends-may-live-on/0165153) as an indie project from some of the employees once their contracts with Microsoft proper are up.

http://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/5/1/51510_1_fable-legends-dead-development-actually-finish.jpg (http://www.tweaktown.com/image.php?image=imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/5/1/51510_1_fable-legends-dead-development-actually-finish_full.jpg)

MCVUK says that there are three different sources within the former Xbox studio that want to spin-off and actually finish the game, which had been in development for almost three years. They've been told that some of the employees have proposed creating an independent studio and taking the IP in order to finish it. It's not a jump to conclude that those passionate from the project want to finish what they started. MCV noted that there's no offer to purchase the game or the studio itself, but that the staff are being asked if they'd like to continue working on it, or accept a redundancy package so that they can simply leave at the end of April.

The online multiplayer free-to-play game was one of the first to utilize DirectX 12 tech, and had a press-only demo that showed a distinct increase (http://www.tweaktown.com/news/50073/fable-legends-up-40-faster-under-dx12-compared-dx11/index.html) in performance as a result of those advancements. It would be nice for the game in it's multiplayer RPG guise to be finished. It had a lot of promise. When I had a chance to play it last year at E3 and the mechanics were sound, with the cooperative play very engaging. It was fun, it would be a waste for it to just be completely discarded.

Fable Legends Has Now Officially Closed

http://i0.wp.com/www.eteknix.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/fable-legends-open-beta-1.jpg?resize=800%2C450
Fable: The Lost Chapters received a great deal of critical acclaim for its memorable characters, exceptional dialogue and gorgeous environments. It spawned a very successful series which is remembered fondly by RPG fans. Fable II launched as an Xbox 360 exclusive and managed to emulate the magical formula which made the original so enjoyable. In contrast to this, there’s varying views regarding Fable III and I’ve never really been able to play it to the latter stages. Rather bizarrely, Lionhead Studios decided to move into the MMO circuit instead of creating another traditional Fable title.
This was a fairly big risk given the cost of development and uncertainty about the appeal of a Fable MMO. I was fortunate enough to be given access to the closed beta and really enjoyed my time exploring Fable Legend’s world. In a shock twist, Microsoft announced the closure of Lionhead Studios and Fable Legend’s development. Despite this, there was some hope that their work could be saved and acquired from another company. However, I received an e-mail today confirming the game’s current status which reads:

“As announced last month (http://news.xbox.com/2016/03/07/microsoft-studios-changes-uk-denmark/), Fable Legends has now been closed and can no longer be accessed.
Refunds are currently being processed, you can find further information on the Lionhead Forums (https://www.fablelegends.com/news/fable-legends-refunds-update).
From all of us here at Lionhead Studios, we would like to thank you for participating in the closed beta and being a part of the game’s development. All stories have to end eventually, but the memories of Heroic triumphs and Villainous plots will last forever. Thank you for your support – you are all Legends!”
This is a real shame because Fable Legends never got the chance to be publicly released. While there were some concerns with the cash shop, these could have been resolved in the future. Of course, Microsoft owns the Fable IP and it’s unlikely that we’ll see another game using the Fable name ever again.
