Rockstar confirms GTA 6 is coming, says 'we've got some ideas'

We haven't even received GTA V on the PC yet, which was delayed from January to March, but now we're hearing the first rumbles of GTA VI. Yes, that's Grand Theft Auto 6.

http://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/4/3/43346_10_rockstar-confirms-gta-6-coming-weve-ideas.jpg (http://www.tweaktown.com/image.php?image=imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/4/3/43346_10_rockstar-confirms-gta-6-coming-weve-ideas_full.jpg)

During a talk with Develop, Rockstar Games' President, Leslie Benzies said: "We've got about 45 years worth of ideas we want to do. We don't know what GTA 6 will be, but we've got some ideas". Benzies continued, somehow thinking that teasing the world of one of the biggest franchises of all world would be fine, adding: "It comes from the idea first. Where is it going to be set is the first question. Then that defines the missions; you're doing different things in LA than in New York or Miami. The map and story get worked up together, and the story is a basic flow of how it works out so you can layer the missions in".

Now we have the pleasure of imagining where Rockstar could take GTA VI if it wasn't held back in shackles by the previous generation consoles. What could GTA IV turn out to be like if it were built from the ground up on the Xbox One, PS4, and the PC? What if Rockstar made it with the PC as the lead platform, with VR in mind and then just baked down to the consoles? I'm obviously making too much sense with that last bit, so I'll leave it at that.

Thanks to our tipster George for this news!

Rockstar confirms GTA 6 and future DLC plans

while PC gamers are still awaiting its arrival, the company behind Grand Theft Auto V is already looking ahead to the next game in the series.
Speaking to Develop Magazine, Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies revealed that the studio has "about 45 years worth of ideas" up its sleeve. These ideas relate to upcoming GTA V and GTA Online content, as well as what will eventually become GTA VI.

"We’ve got about 45 years worth of ideas we want to do," Benzies laughs. "We don’t know what GTA VI will be, but we’ve got some ideas. GTA Online is the focus right now. There ain’t no rest between finishing V and then Online. Plus we have some other things – stuff, DLC, I don’t know how to describe it exactly – that we’d like to do, and we’ll pick the right ones."

GTA VI Could be on the Horizon

Grand Theft Auto has been one of the more successful gaming franchises as of late, with Rockstar announcing that hey have sold more that 45 Million copies (http://au.ibtimes.com/gta-v-ships-45-million-copies-ps4-xbox-one-sales-figures-revealed-1418073) of the very well reviewed and incredibly fun Grand Theft Auto 5 on Xbox and PS4 after having only been out since November of 2014. This is a number which handily beats the total amount of copies of GTA IV that were sold from 2008 until 2013, which was around 25 Million (http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2013/07/30/grand-theft-auto-iv-has-sold-25-million-units-to_2d00_date.aspx).
http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/gta_6_paris_city_wallpaper_poster-635x899.jpg (http://cdn3.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/gta_6_paris_city_wallpaper_poster.jpg)Fan speculation as to what GTA VI could entail.

But what does this say of the future of the franchise? Now that GTA V is released for all major players, except for the PC, where does this particular franchise go today? Leslie Benzies, the president of Rockstar North had apparently told Develop Magazine (http://www.develop-online.net/studio-profile/inside-rockstar-north-part-1-the-vision/0183989) back in 2013 that they have quite a lot of content planned as DLC for GTAV, Online and perhaps even a future standalone game.

“We’ve got about 45 years worth of ideas we want to do,” Benzies laughs. “We don’t know what GTA VI will be, but we’ve got some ideas. GTA Online is the focus right now. There ain’t no rest between finishing V and then Online. Plus we have some other things – stuff, DLC, I don’t know how to describe it exactly – that we’d like to do, and we’ll pick the right ones.”
This is all excellent news that they are committed to the growth of a very viable brand, but which direction is going to be their next? LA and the various fun-filled avenues of adventure were the focus for quite some time, but what ideas could they possibly pull out of their hats for the next go around? I feel that this genre is a good one, the openness of the world brings with it great possibilities, but at the same time it could be a very easy trap to fall into to rehash old ideas and get into a cycle of boredom. GTA V sometimes feels as if it is GTA IV but more refined and with a few new novel ideas thrown in to spice up game play. Could GTA VI possibly bring an even larger more interactive world to it? Would that even be considered fun at that point? Mayhaps a new locale or a new focus for the characters instead of the usual, albeit very entertaining, mayhem? Only time will tell, and for the foreseeable future it seems that they are committed to supporting the online gaming experience fully until the next game is even announced.

Rockstar – New IP Announcement Might Be Coming

Rockstar, have shipped 45 million units of Grand Theft Auto V, and with the PC version of the game releasing next month, they could easily surpass 50 million. It would make sense, given the huge success the game has received that they would announce Grand Theft Auto 6, or the extremely anticipated sequel to Red Dead Redemption.
http://cdn3.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Rockstar-2-635x397.jpg (http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Rockstar-2.jpg)
Michael Pachter, Wedbush Securities’ Analyst, disagrees, and believes that Rockstar will likely announce a new IP. He adds, that Rockstar is motivated by providing high quality game experiences for the player and not by money.

“I don’t think the sequel to Red Dead Redemption is the next Rockstar game. Remember when I said there was some new IP that they’ve been working on since at least ‘09? I think that comes before Red Dead Revolution. I think a sequel to Midnight Club comes before Red Dead Revolution, and it wouldn’t shock me if a sequel to Manhunt came before Bully or Red Dead.”

So, Pachter believes that Rockstar, will likely announce a Midnight Club, a Manhunt and even a Bully sequel before announcing a sequel to Red Dead Redemption. But all of these returning IPs could be preceded by a completely new IP.
“I think Rockstar has a really amazing number of great games and great IPs, and I don’t think that Rockstar are motivated by money. I think Rockstar are motivated by high quality game experiences. And I don’t think that they’re willing to abandon those other brands in order to generate higher sales for their parent company. I think that they want to keep all those brands alive. So I think before Red Dead Revolution you will get Midnight Club sequel and a new IP.”

“And remember, Rockstar has launched a game every single year since 2001, if you count Grand Theft Auto V on next-gen as a game. I don’t know if we should count Grand Theft Auto V as a game or not on next-gen. Otherwise they’ve missed one. They’re working on a lot of projects, they get one game a year out.”
“There is no chance that they would have gotten into February of ‘15 without announcing the next Red Dead. I mean, they announced the next Grand Theft Auto on November 1st, 2011. Remember? And it came out on September 17th, 2013, so almost two years later. I think you’ll hear about Red Dead at least a year ahead of time. So if you hear about it this summer, it’s coming out next year. Maybe. But we haven’t heard about it yet. I think they could get away with not announcing Midnight Club, or Bully, on Manhunt 3 or whatever until E3, and I frankly think that the reason we haven’t heard about the new IP is because it’s a new IP.”
Pachter believes that Rockstar will make an announcement of a new IP close to E3, by hosting their own event during the same time to gain attention.
“I think that the brand new IP that Rockstar has been working on since ‘09 will be announced this year. Rockstar tends to not go to E3, so they’ll probably have their own event in May or something. Knowing them, they’ll probably have it during E3 in another city just to draw attention. But I think it’s a new IP this year. I don’t think it’s Red Dead, so no, I think that’s naive of people to believe that the Rockstar are going to follow the success of GTA V with more GTA.”

Rockstar strive to deliver stellar experiences

Personally, I wouldn’t be surprised if Rockstar did indeed announce a new IP. It could be true, as Pachter says, that they are not motivated by money, at least for easy cash-ins, as much as other companies might be. But they do strive for success, both in providing an exceptional experience for the player, as well as for critical acclaim. Rockstar, a developer with such an exceptionally large and successful pedigree, does have a much bigger obligation to deliver nothing but stellar experiences. So it would be safer, for them, to build upon the huge success of their already established IPs, namely Grand Theft Auto and Read Dead.
If Rockstar have indeed been working on a new IP since 2009, then now would be a perfect time to announce it, and build excitement upon the huge success of Grand Theft Auto V. If they do host their own event prior to, or during E3 later this year, they could have a presentation, thanking their fans for the great reception and success that Grand Theft Auto has seen, and continue to introduce the new IP.
E3 is taking place at the Los Angeles Convention Center on June 16-18, 2015. We will keep you informed of any news from Rockstar, as well as coverage of the E3 event.

Rockstar mapping the entire United States for Grand Theft Auto 6

We were one of the first to break the news of Rockstar Games teasing the development of Grand Theft Auto 6 (http://www.tweaktown.com/news/43346/rockstar-confirms-gta-6-coming-weve-ideas/index.html), and here we are again. It looks like Rockstar is reportedly mapping the entire of the United States for its next GTA game, something that will push the release of GTA 6 to 2020. If this is true, it'll make benchmarking the game (http://www.tweaktown.com/tweakipedia/83/grand-theft-auto-benchmarked-1080p-1440p-4k/index.html) bigger and badder than ever.

image: http://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/4/4/44698_03_rockstar-mapping-entire-united-states-grand-theft-auto-6.jpg (http://www.tweaktown.com/image.php?image=imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/4/4/44698_03_rockstar-mapping-entire-united-states-grand-theft-auto-6_full.jpg)
http://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/4/4/44698_03_rockstar-mapping-entire-united-states-grand-theft-auto-6.jpg

The latest report has Rockstar mapping the whole US for GTA 6, and while this might be a rumor, it's not too far out of reality. Ubisoft did something similar with The Crew, which took the entire United States and shoved it into a smaller map which took around 1.5 hours to drive across.

The bigger issues of having the entire US mapped for GTA 6 would be playing in it, with the report stating: "Loading the entirety of the USA would have its issues. I mean, driving from one city to another could be a real chore, especially if it's just filled with country side and nothing much to do in between".

Second, the hardware requirements would be out of this world, even with the best coding that Rockstar could manage. By then, we should hopefully see consoles either gone, or rolled into services that stream the content to you from a supercomputer, similar to how NVIDIA's GRID technology works. But just imagine, a super-sized Grand Theft Auto 6 playable on the PC, or in VR...

GTA 6 rumored to have female lead character, would launch in 2019

We're finally hearing more about Grand Theft Auto 6, with the latest rumor is that Rockstar Games is set to shake up the GTA universe by offering a female lead character in the game. The last time we heard about GTA 6, Rockstar teased it "had some ideas" for its next game.

http://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/5/0/50585_09_gta-6-rumored-female-lead-character-launch-2019.jpg

According to GTA co-creator Dan Houser, who once said that the idea of a female lead character didn't feel right, but since then he's said that it could be an interesting idea. Houser said: "In the future, could we do a game with a lead female character? Of course! We just haven't found the right game for it yet, but it's one of the things we always think about".

The next rumor for GTA 6 is that Hollywood star Ryan Gosling could add his voice talent to the next game, with the map side of things pointing to a multi-map environment on a scale that hasn't been seen before. Rumors are floating that every map that's been used in all previous GTA titles would be bought back, and revamped in next-gen graphics thanks to GTA 6 - but other rumors point to Rockstar returning to their London roots.

As for the release date, sometime in 2019 is the latest target - but I think we're going to see full VR support through the PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive - which I expect new generations of hardware between now and then, and next-gen consoles to replace the Xbox One and PS4 way before 2019.

Report claims GTA 6 is in early stages of development, and Rockstar almost made GTA: Tokyo

http://www.techspot.com/images2/news/bigimage/2016/03/2016-03-24-image-4.jpg

It’s been over two years since the initial release of GTA 5. The game is one of the most successful of all time, shipping over 60 million (http://www.techspot.com/news/63726-take-two-reveals-gta-v-has-shipped-60.html) copies across all platforms. But while the multiplayer element continues to receive new content, we still haven’t seen any single-player DLC.
If a report from Techradar (http://www.techradar.com/news/gaming/rockstar-came-close-to-making-grand-theft-auto-tokyo-1317622) proves to be true, the chances of getting any new solo missions are looking even slimmer, as development on GTA 6 has already begun.
The website’s source claims that while preliminary work on the sixth main installment in the long-running series is underway, the game’s location has yet to be decided.
It’s also revealed that Rockstar had planned to create Grand Theft Auto: Tokyo many years ago, and even visited the Japanese capital to assess its potential as a location.
The developer was supposedly “serious” about the idea of taking the franchise to Asia around the time of GTA 3 and Vice City, but Tokyo’s “problematic” road system was allegedly one of the reasons why the plan never became a reality. In 2003, Rockstar filed a trademark for GTA: Tokyo, as well as ones for GTA: Bogota and GTA: Sin City.
Another reason we never got GTA: Tokyo was apparently due to Rockstar’s reluctance to move the series outside of the US. Barring the two 1999 mission packs that were set in London, GTA games have always taken place in fictional cities based on real US locations. The developers worried that moving Grand Theft Auto to another country may have resulted in it feeling less like the GTA titles people know and love.
However, the GTA: Tokyo idea was a long time ago, so there’s every chance that Rockstar could now decide it's time for a change and locate game number six in a new continent. It is, after all, hard to imagine a GTA title being unsuccessful, no matter where it’s set.

Here is why Rockstar cancelled a GTA game set in Tokyo (http://www.kitguru.net/gaming/matthew-wilson/here-is-why-rockstar-cancelled-a-gta-game-set-in-tokyo/)

Grand Theft Auto is a series that has stood the test of time so far and has only managed to grow in popularity over the years. However, the series main games rarely venture outside of the US and now we know why, as it turns out that Rockstar was planning a Grand Theft Auto game set in Tokyo at one point before giving up.

According to sources speaking with TechRadar (http://www.techradar.com/news/gaming/rockstar-came-close-to-making-grand-theft-auto-tokyo-1317622), a source close to Rockstar’s plans said that the developer was “serious” about a GTA game set in Tokyo at one point but pulled the plug after decided that it would be too difficult to move the series location outside of the US.
http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/600x338xRSG_GTAV_Screenshot_065-e1459013881940.jpg.pagespeed.ic.TgZOc4Hi9n.jpg (http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/RSG_GTAV_Screenshot_065-e1459013881940.jpg)
Rockstar did make a trip out to Japan though to check it out and do some research but unfortunately, nothing ever came of it. While a GTA set in Japan may never make its way out of the early stages of development, according to TR’s report, GTA 6 is already in development.
That isn’t entirely unexpected after all many huge franchises begin planning their next step almost immediately after releasing a new game. The next installment in the series isn’t that far along yet though as a location hasn’t been settled on.

“Preliminary” Work on GTA 6 Has Begun – Rockstar Was “Serious” About GTA: Tokyo

Even more than two years after its initial launch on last-gen consoles, GTA V remains one of the most fair-haired games ever released, making the Grand Theft Auto franchise an essence for Rockstar. Despite tons of rumors and hints though, there is almost no proper information on what plans the developer has for the series’ future. But if these latest details from a “source close to Rockstar” are to be believed, the company, which once nearly made a “full” Grand Theft Auto game set in Tokyo, has begun “preliminary” work on GTA 6.
http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/GTA-6-635x357.jpg (http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/GTA-6.jpg)
GTA 6 is Already in Production and Might Use a New Game Development Engine – Rockstar Visited Tokyo to “Assess its Potential for a Full GTA Game”

A report published by the good folks over at TechRadar (http://www.techradar.com/news/gaming/rockstar-came-close-to-making-grand-theft-auto-tokyo-1317622) reveal some interesting details about the past and future of Grand Theft Auto franchise. According to the site, a “source close to Rockstar” has confirmed that GTA 6 is very much real at this point and the company has already started working on the sixth main installment in the critically-acclaimed, long-running series. The game’s location, however, is yet to be decided. This doesn’t come as much of a surprise, as you’d expect the developer to move forward with its plans for the next Grand Theft Auto title when the last one has been out for more than two years now.
The report also speculates that the next addition in Rockstar’s western action-adventure video game series Red Dead, which is widely anticipated to debut this year, may use a new game development engine, which was hinted to be in the making by a job listing put out in 2012 by the company for post of an engineer who would be responsible for developing “cutting-edge architectures and high performance systems for current and next-gen platforms.” However, even if Red Dead Redemption 2 doesn’t use it, “there’s a very good chance that GTA 6 will,” reads the report (http://www.techradar.com/news/gaming/rockstar-came-close-to-making-grand-theft-auto-tokyo-1317622).

Rockstar Wanted to Make a GTA Game Set in Tokyo, Japan

In addition, the unnamed source also claims that Rockstar, at one point in early 2000s, almost made a Grand Theft Auto game set in Tokyo. The developer was “serious” about the idea of making a game with Asian setting around the time of GTA 3 and Vice City, and even “visited the Japanese capital several years ago to assess its potential for a full GTA game.” However, the plug was ultimately pulled when Tokyo’s “problematic” road system became one of the reasons why Rockstar thought the project was unworkable.

“In December 2003, Take-Two Interactive actually filed trademarks for GTA: Tokyo, GTA: Bogota as well as the particularly mysterious Grand Theft Auto: Sin City,” reads the report. It looks like the possibility of a Grand Theft Auto game set outside of the USA has gotten slimmer with time, as the site reports: “Our source added that, as time has gone on, Rockstar has realised the difficulty in moving Grand Theft Auto outside of the USA, where it has firmly embedded itself. There are a number of series staples, from brands to cars that Rockstar would likely have to change if a future GTA was set somewhere else.”
Of course, all this information is coming from a third party source that hasn’t provided any hard evidence to support its claims, so all this should be taken with a grain of salt. Expectations are that Rockstar will announce the next, inevitable Red Dead title this year, most probably at E3. Rumors of the developer working on the next mainline GTA game are not surprising at all, as GTA V has already sold more 60 million copies (http://wccftech.com/gta-v-hits-54-million-lifetime-sales-taketwo-interactive-breaks-analyst-predicted-revenue-targets-digital-sales/). However, it doesn’t seem like Rockstar needs to rush it with the next GTA title, either, as GTA V with its online multiplayer mode, GTA Online, is still going strong.

(http://wccftech.com/gta-6-in-development-rockstar-gta-tokyo/#ixzz44CWXqHRo)Grand Theft Auto 6 is in production, likely to be set in US

Several reports just ahead of the Easter weekend claim (http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/gaming/gta-6-release-date-grand-theft-auto-rumours-leaks-2016-a6954906.html) that Grand Theft Auto 6 is in production. However, the statement on its own doesn't provide us much to get our teeth into. After GTA V became available on all current viable platforms, and a few DLC-style trinkets completed, most would come to the reasonable conclusion that Rockstar would begin work on GTA 6. And so it seems, according to a source who spoke to TechRadar (http://www.techradar.com/news/gaming/rockstar-came-close-to-making-grand-theft-auto-tokyo-1317622).
GTA 6 is admittedly a long way away. The fifth game in the series was released five years after its predecessor. If GTA 6 leaves the same gap we won't be seeing it until 2019 or 2020 on PC. So what details do we have to whet your appetites? I guess the name of the game is a pretty obvious one… and the other widely reported news nugget is that GTA 6 is likely to be set within another imaginary US city/state.
http://hexus.net/media/uploaded/2016/3/224c1fa0-a031-4a8b-aaf2-8430139107fd.jpg
Apparently sometime around the time of GTA 3 and Vice City, Rockstar surveyed the Tokyo cityscape and decided that "it would be too complicated to take the games outside of the US". The road system alone provided unsoothable developer headaches, so this 'serious' endeavour was canned. Such an uprooting and upheaval could have a big impact with all the cars and brands featured in the game too, for example.
Evidence of the past intent to ship the franchise to Japan is available, as Take-Two Interactive filed trademarks for GTA: Tokyo back in December 2003. (GTA: Bogota and Grand Theft Auto: Sin City were trademarked at the same time).

There is still a rich seam of locations in the US which could inspire and give distinctive flavour to upcoming GTA games. We've most recently had 'tributes' to New York, Miami and LA – where would you choose next?
