Sony Xperia E4 goes cheap and big

5-inch screen, low-end spec
Sony has refreshed the E-series with the Xperia E4, a frugal 5-inch smartphone with a value-oriented spec.

The Xperia E4 sports a 5-inch screen and is somewhat bigger than last year’s Xperia E3, which uses a 4.5-inch screen. However, the 5-inch IPS display fails to impress in the resolution department, as it’s a qHD (960x540) unit.
However, the Xperia E4 is designed with affordability in mind, and the rest of the spec proves it. The phone is powered by a MediaTek MT6582 quad-core Cortex-A7 SoC with Mali-400MP2 graphics. There’s no LTE, on board, but at least the Xperia E4 features 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage and a microSD slot.

Sony really pinched pennies on the camera, so you’re looking at a 5-megapixel unit at the back and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. The phone measures 137 x 74.6 x 10.5mm and weighs 144g, which is not bad, as the bezels are quite small. However, it is a bit on the thick side. Inside you’ll find a 2300mAh battery that should have no trouble keeping the SoC and low-res screen going for a couple of days.

There is still no word on the price, but the Xperia E3 will clearly go after the Moto G and similar devices, if not even cheaper ones. The understated design should appeal to many consumers, especially thanks to the smaller bezels – the E3 featured relatively chubby bezels which made it look quite old, so the E4 is a nice improvement.

Sony has a habit of delivering relatively good build quality on a budget, but obviously in the ~$150 segment we can’t expect miracles. The Xperia E3 is currently priced halfway between the Moto E and Moto G in major European markets, so we expect the E4 to end up with similar pricing (the spec is halfway between the two Motos anyway).

Abre a pestana Sony.

Sony to embrace more MediaTek SoCs

http://www.fudzilla.com/media/k2/items/cache/5e020c188421258f207953c3a99ce272_L.jpg (http://www.fudzilla.com/media/k2/items/cache/5e020c188421258f207953c3a99ce272_XL.jpg)

Expanding cooperation with Taiwanese companies

Sony is expected to use more MediaTek application processors in upcoming Xperia smartphones.

According to Digitimes (http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20150212PD206.html), the Japanese consumer electronics giant is planning to increase its reliance on MediaTek chips in entry-level and mid-range smartphones this year. There is still no word on high-end products, and it seems Qualcomm’s 800-series parts will continue to power Xperia flagships for the time being.

Sony is also working with a number of Taiwanese ODMs like Foxconn, FIH Mobile, Compal and Arima Communications. The company’s latest Xperia E4 (http://www.fudzilla.com/news/mobile/36985-sony-xperia-e4-goes-cheap-and-big) smartphone was in fact outsourced to Arima.

As for Foxconn/FIH Mobile and Compal, they are said to be developing 4G models for Sony, which means they are supposed to cover the mid-range segment. Most of this new models are expected to be based on MediaTek’s new octa-core MT6752 processor, which packs 64-bit Cortex-A53 cores. The affordable MT6752 has already found its way into a number of Chinese mid-range smartphones, as well big-brand devices like the HTC Desire 826 and Acer Liquid Jade S.

Sony Xperia E4 to Have Two-Day Battery Life

http://cdn.eteknix.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/sony-xperia-e4.jpg
Sony’s forthcoming mid-range smartphone, the Xperia E4, will have a 2,300mAh battery that can handle up to 48 hours of active use. The Xperia E4, due to go on sale later this month, could even run for longer, using its STAMINA and Ultra STAMINA power-saving modes.

“With Xperia E4, we wanted to offer people some of the premium Sony features they have come to expect — with unparalleled ease of use — at a highly competitive price point,” Tony McNulty, Vice President of Sony Mobile’s Value Category Business Management, said. “With a simple setup, great screen and unrivaled two-day battery life, we’ve created an on-the-go entertainment device that will keep on going, wherever you are.”
The 5-inch Xperia E4 has a MediaTek MT6582 1.3GHz quadcore processor, a RAM 1GB, and 8GB built-in storage. The handset also features a rear 5MP camera with full HD video capabilities, a 2MP front camera, and a microSD slot. It will run Android 4.4.4 KitKat, but no news on whether it will have an Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade.
The smartphone will not be available in the US, and is rumoured to be priced at around £100.

Sony Experia E4g Comes With LTE, Promises One-Week Battery Life In Ultra STAMINA Mode

http://media.bestofmicro.com/5/P/481021/gallery/e4g_w_600.png (http://www.tomshardware.com/gallery/e4g,0101-481021-0-2-12-1-png-.html)The budget Sony Experia E4 (http://www.tomshardware.com/news/sony-xperia-e4-two-days-battery,28534.html) was unveiled earlier this month as the successor to the Xperia E3, but there was one missing feature that may have disappointed some: 4G connectivity. Sony will rectify that with the new Xperia E4g, a smartphone that changes little from the Xperia E4 but adds 4G capabilities.
The Xperia E4g comes with a quad-core 1.5 GHz processor, which is a step up from the quad-core 1.3 GHz chip that the Xperia E4 had. It's not clear whether this is a Cortex-A53-based chip like the Snapdragon 410, which also comes with integrated LTE, or just another Cortex-A7-based chip that's higher clocked. If it's Cortex-A7 and it uses the same 28nm process node, it may be slightly less efficient in terms of battery life.http://media.bestofmicro.com/5/S/481024/gallery/e4g-design_w_600.png (http://www.tomshardware.com/gallery/e4g-design,0101-481024-0-2-12-1-png-.html)The device has a 5" qHD (960 x 540) screen, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of storage, 5 MP/1080p rear camera, a 2 MP/720p front camera, and the same 2,300 mAh battery as before; it will also come with Android KitKat out of the box. However, it will receive the Lollipop upgrade later on. Being a budget phone, it's also likely to be the last update the device will receive until Sony states otherwise, so that should also factor into the purchase decision.
Fortunately, although it has received a slightly faster chip and LTE connectivity, it will retail for the same price that the Xperia E4 did initially, 129 euro. The Xperia E4 has dropped to 120 euro in order to distinguish itself from the LTE-based Xperia E4g.
The device also comes with some interesting features such as the Xperia Transfer App, which allows users to transfer photos, bookmarks, apps, music and messages from Blackberrys, Windows phones or other Android smartphones.
The camera app comes with an Auto Scene Recognition mode, which can recognize up to 52 modes to help users capture better photos in whatever environment they're in. Thanks to NFC support, those photos can also be easily shared with other phones.
http://media.bestofmicro.com/5/Q/481022/gallery/e4g-battery_w_600.png (http://www.tomshardware.com/gallery/e4g-battery,0101-481022-0-2-12-1-png-.html)Sony advertises the device as having two days of battery life, which is believable if we're talking about moderate use, considering it doesn't have an especially high screen resolution and the processor, either Cortex A7 or Cortex A53, should be quite efficient.
However, the battery life can be further expanded with the STAMINA Mode, which Sony has had on its devices for some time, as well as with an Ultra STAMINA Mode that can keep the phone lasting for a full week with only the core phone functions enabled. That's a feature that many would probably like on other phones, as well.

Sony Launches Dual-SIM Xperia E4g In India; Higher Price, Still On Android KitKat

http://media.bestofmicro.com/C/F/491631/gallery/sony-e4g-front_w_600.png (http://www.tomshardware.com/gallery/sony-e4g-front,0101-491631-0-2-12-1-png-.html)Back in February, Sony promised a new Xperia E4 model, this time with 4G. At the time, the company said the single-SIM Xperia E4g will cost only 129 euro (Rs. 8,700), which was the original price of the Xperia E4. That sounded like a great move from Sony and was actually a first in the company's E-series history.
Sony has usually sold its low-end E-series smartphones for a price that was significantly higher than that of competing phones with similar specs. The E4g looked like it was going to change that and offer much better value for the money, similarly to Motorola's Moto E 4G.
However, the dual-SIM version of the Xperia E4g will cost Rs. 13,290 in India, which is roughly 200 euro. Even the single-SIM version looks like it will be around 165 euro in the UK, on Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-Xperia-E4G-SIM-Free-Smartphone-White/dp/B00TZV602M/). While the original price made the Xperia E4g much more competitive, the new pricing may put it at a disadvantage compared to new low-end phones being launched with similar specs but at lower price points.
http://media.bestofmicro.com/C/E/491630/gallery/xperia-e4g-flat_w_600.jpg (http://www.tomshardware.com/gallery/xperia-e4g-flat,0101-491630-0-2-12-1-jpg-.html)The Sony Xperia E4g comes with a MediaTek MT6732 chip, which includes a 64-bit 1.5 GHz quad-core Cortex-A53 CPU and a Mali-T760MP2 GPU, which should be quite fast for most casual smartphone users. The device has a 4.7" screen with a qHD 960 x 540 resolution; that's a little on the low side, but with the lower resolution comes the benefit of increased battery life.
http://media.bestofmicro.com/C/C/491628/gallery/e4g-hdr_w_600.png (http://www.tomshardware.com/gallery/e4g-hdr,0101-491628-0-2-12-1-png-.html)The E4g also features 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of storage, microSD support, a 5MP camera with LED flash that supports 1080p video recording and HDR for photography, 2MP front-camera, and a 2,300 mAh battery. As the name implies, it also supports 4G connectivity.
http://media.bestofmicro.com/C/D/491629/gallery/xperia-e4g-battery_w_600.jpg (http://www.tomshardware.com/gallery/xperia-e4g-battery,0101-491629-0-2-12-1-jpg-.html)One of Sony Xperia E4g's unique features is its Ultra Stamina (http://www.tomshardware.com/news/sony-xperia-e4g-ultra-stamina,28619.html) mode. According to Sony, the device can already last for two days of moderate usage, but with the Ultra Stamina mode, the phone can last for a whole week. Sony achieved this performance by shutting off all of the smartphone's processes except for the basic call functions.
Perhaps the biggest disappointment about the Xperia E4g is that it comes with the year-and-a-half-old Android KitKat operating system, while other competitors in India are already on Android 5.0 or even Android 5.1. (Mainly, those are the "Android One" smartphones from Google's partners, as well as Nexus devices).
The higher price and the older version of Android may chase away some Indian customers, while others could be drawn to Sony's more refined design sensibilities and higher-quality materials. Indian consumers can purchase the dual-SIM Sony Xperia E4g now from Sony's website (http://www.sonymobile.com/in/products/phones/xperia-e4g-dual/). The black version costs Rs. 13,290 while the white one is a little more, going for Rs. 13,490.
