"We're relaunching Payday 2 for the new platforms," said Almir Listo, producer at Overkill Software, told Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-02-04-payday-2-crimewave-edition-for-ps4-Xbox-one-in-june). "You'll get a year's worth of post-launch updates for the PC version available from the get-go - that's both the paid-for and free content."

Payday 2 has racked up 9 million copies sold for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 after launching in August 2013.

Overkill Gives 2 More Years of Support for Payday 2

http://cdn.eteknix.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/payday-2-800x450.jpg
Overkill, Payday 2’s developer, announced that it will continue support for the tittle until 2017. The studio apparently has reached a deal with publisher 505 Games that will allow it to deliver content for two more years. The current model for Payday 2 mixes free updates, optional paid DLCs and new campaigns.

“We’ve seen many of your comments already. At Overkill, we are still celebrating,” producer Almir Listo explained in a new blog post. “We are very excited about this. On behalf of the rest of the crew, thank you everyone for your support through the years! We wouldn’t be where we are without you guys! We will honor your support by continue supporting Payday 2 for two more years. Alright! We have a lot in store for the rest of the year and have no time to rest.”

Overkill stated that it is currently getting ready to release the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the title with all DLCs up to date this June. Also, the developer has a detailed roadmap of paid and free content updates laid out and with a database of over 9 million users, it would only make sense for them to continue support for the title and keep its fans happy.

“We could [make Payday 3],” Listo stated. “But it would just bite us back in the end.”We want to build a long-term relationship with the community. Five years ago we barely existed. We’ve always respected them and their devotion to the Payday universe.”
Overkill is said to also be working on a new The Walking Dead title and a mysterious sci-fi project called Storm, which is due in 2016.
Thank you Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2015-03-24-payday-2-support-will-continue-for-two-more-years) for providing us with this information

Payday 2 Making its Way to Mobile, Starbreeze is Investing in Mobile

Last night Starbreeze Studios announced a number of exciting things, with one of the most curious (http://starbreeze.com/2015/06/starbreeze-brings-the-payday-franchise-to-mobile-devices-with-strategic-1-4-musd-cash-investment-in-cmune/) is that they want to bring their iconic Payday series to mobile devices.
http://cdn3.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/1a53949e874620b253dca2a4b8afefdeab4892d3-635x357.jpg (http://cdn3.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/1a53949e874620b253dca2a4b8afefdeab4892d3.jpg)
Starbreeze Studios wants to bring Payday 2 to mobile devices, partnering with Cmune to develop the mobile versions. Starbreeze Studios has invested $1.4 million for a 6.3% stake in Cmune in order to ensure their franchise and Payday 2 are able to get the proper support in order to bring quality mobile games to market. While no concrete details were covered about how they want to handle the mobile transition, we do know that they want to ensure that there are still competitive options available to players.

“We see a huge opportunity in the marriage of first class IP like PAYDAY and mobile. There’s a market hungry for a fresh take on FPS in both the east and west, which we plan to capture.”

– Ludovic Bodin, CEO and co-founder of Cmune
Porting, or bringing the franchise to mobile as a completely new game, is going to be interesting. The idea of porting as the means to introduce the franchise makes little sense, unless they’re targeting NVIDIA’s Shield device, or those geared towards gaming specifically. FPS on mobile isn’t quite as compelling as it is on console or PC, it’s not nearly as much fun and touch controls are usually lacking or quite frustrating to use.
This could of course mean a completely new take on the franchise, but the hope is to not cheapen the experience. Despite the gratuitous gore and violence, Payday 2 is a surprisingly deep game. And it’s unnervingly fun and entertaining, so the mobile portion of the franchise has some very big shoes to fill.
If you’re curious about what it’s like to go on a crime spree but want to keep those activities contained in a virtual environment, Steam currently has Payday 2 for $8.99 (http://store.steampowered.com/app/218620/) as part of their Summer Sale (http://wccftech.com/pree3-weekend-gaming-deals-price-cheats/).

Users Rage Over Payday 2 Support-Stop on Last-Gen Consoles

http://cdn.eteknix.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/payday-2-800x450.jpg
When Overkill announced that Payday 2: Crimewave Edition (http://www.eteknix.com/overkill-gives-2-more-years-of-support-for-payday-2/) was coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 back in February as well as continued support for the game until 2017, a lot of people got excited for the chance to play the heist game on the current generation consoles.
In the announcement was something most people read past in the excitement for the new versions and all the new content promised – both paid and free – and that was the announcement that the company would cease the update development for the last generation consoles, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

Q: Will you continue to support PAYDAY 2 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3?
A: In connection with this, we have decided to retire the PAYDAY 2 update development on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. We wish we could provide more updates. For a long time, we’ve been looking at how we could add more updates from a technical standpoint. Sadly, we now understand that it’s impossible to continue doing so.
As said, many people didn’t notice that part and they’re now taking their rage out on twitter and similar social media platforms. But really, no one is to blame here, it just reached a natural stopping point where that 10-year old hardware can’t handle things anymore.

Payday 2 Moderators go on Strike After Microtransactions Fiasco

http://i1.wp.com/www.eteknix.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/payday-2.jpg?resize=800%2C450
Payday 2 is a hugely successful co-op crime shooter which initially attracted a loyal and passionate community. Sadly, Overkill outraged Payday 2’s fan-base after implementing microtransactions (http://www.eteknix.com/microtransactions-dramatically-alter-payday-2-user-reviews/) despite reassurances that this would never happen. As a result, many people have posted irate comments or simply left the community. Not only that, a moderator (http://steamcommunity.com/app/218620/discussions/8/496881136905452713/?tscn=1447373910) decided to go on strike and said:

“We’ve recently being under a great deal of stress after the Crimefest update,”
“A number of death threats thrown at us as well as much more heavy moderation needed due to a huge increase in users breaking the rules. We are not paid and have been in a very stressful situation.”
“A lot of people will be wondering why we didn’t do this earlier, due to the recent safe release. A lot of things happened and Overkill admitted it wasn’t managed very well. We we’re hoping Overkill would learn from its mistakes regarding the last update and we were hoping they took these into consideration with the COP. We have a lot of issues regarding the release of the COP that shows they have NOT listened to user feedback at all.”
“I like to believe that I am not unreasonable but unfortunately the situation constantly degraded. We will no longer refuse to work if we are given a public interview with a member of Overkill. We want to be heard and see what Overkill are willing to do to fix the situation.”
“If Overkill decides to let us go as moderators it’s something we are prepared for, I personally cannot sit by when they continue to promote immoral business practices. I felt the skins system needed work but could function. The recent safe update showed against that.”
Clearly, the moderating team are exasperated, and struggling to cope with people’s frustrations. Despite this, Overkill doesn’t seem overly concerned as the microtransactions keep bringing in a decent amount of money. However, the dwindling community and terrible handling of this affair will undoubtedly affect the game’s longevity. Overkill’s reputation has also suffered, and I feel a large proportion of the community will be very skeptical of any promises in the future.

Overkill apologises over recent Payday 2 updates (http://www.kitguru.net/gaming/matthew-wilson/overkill-apologises-over-recent-payday-2-updates/)

These last few weeks haven’t been great for Overkill Studios. The team decided to silently put microtransactions in to the game, which caused a lot of uproar amongst players. Then things got worse when additional bonuses were added to the new microtransaction system, which caused the game’s Steam Forum mods to go on strike.
After all of that, Overkill has finally opened up about the recent updates and its lack of communication on the matter. In a Steam post titled (http://steamcommunity.com/games/218620/announcements/detail/85928399508949511) ‘PAYDAY 2: An update and an apology, Almir Listo, Overkill’s global brand director, offered players an apology.
http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/ss_1e4ee2b1ff742d966ccad7bfe856b88848cbf4a4.600x33 8.jpg (http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/ss_1e4ee2b1ff742d966ccad7bfe856b88848cbf4a4.600x33 8.jpg)
“Players have been angry with us, media have written about us en masse and our volunteer moderators went on strike. For all the distress we’ve caused the past few weeks, I’d just like to take the time and say that we’re sorry. We’ve done a lot of things right in the past, but these past few weeks we screwed up”.
The studio also held a Skype call with its forum moderators to get them back on-board and discuss better communication for the future. However, there is no indication that microtransactions will be going anywhere, so while the studio has apologised, it isn’t backtracking.
