Galactic Civilizations III Preview Review

Certainly there is a wrong way to approach the Steam Early Access program. We’ve all either heard stories or unfortunately have first-hand experience with games or projects that never seem to come to fruition and completely disappoint us or of those projects that even once they are released seem like they are just in a perpetual state of beta testing. H1Z1 comes to mind.
http://cdn2.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/2015-02-14_00046-635x357.jpg (http://cdn2.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/2015-02-14_00046.jpg)
Stardock Corporation, however, seems to have a winning formula. Not all developers have the resources to truly take on a big project, or any project, especially in this age of independent development and the popularity of crowd funding. Sometimes we get a little excited about our project and over promise. Significantly.
With Galactic Civilizations III, they’re showing the world just what the Steam Early Access program should be for: As a proper beta testing platform.
Perhaps it’s because the developers are specifically employed for the development of the game and are thus compensated for their time and effort. Or perhaps it’s because they have defined clear objectives and waypoints for the project. Or it could speak to the focus drove and leadership of the company. Regardless, Stardock Corporation is making it work, well.
Released to the wilds as an aspiring beta on March 27th 2014, Galactic Civilizations III proposed an evolution of their very successful string of 4X strategy games. They’re promising only what’s been delivered, and what’s been delivered so far is absolutely excellent.
http://cdn4.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/2015-02-15_00013-635x357.jpg (http://cdn3.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/2015-02-15_00013.jpg)
Before we get into this I have to stress that this is still a beta, no matter how complete it may look. While playing this you may experience things that either aren’t intended or are bugs that will likely be fixed in the future. But I do highly suggest you check this out, if you like 4X strategy games.
Galactic Civilization III is an open-ended 4X space-based strategy game played out on a hexagonal map. Galactic Civilization III allows for the freedom to explore and accomplish whatever you desire in the game. You can be conquerors, explorers, traders, militants or whatever you choose. It’s absolutely vast in its scope and can be far more addicting than I thought. It’s similar in design to the Civilization series of games by Sid Meier, and of course it’s quite similar to the previous Galactic Civilization episodes.
One of the most notable changes from the previous installments is the mandatory 64-bit system requirement. This is done to allow for the maximum and most sophisticated game that you can play. Galactic Civilization III would be limited otherwise, they say.
They’ve added a ship customization area where you can design your own ship. It’s certainly not a CAD program by any means, but the level of detail and number of options that you can change on any given ship, or on the ones you create, is still rather fascinating. It’s more than just changing the loadout of the weapons. Add different superstructures and other apparatus to make it truly original.
http://cdn4.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/2015-02-15_00014-635x357.jpg (http://cdn3.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/2015-02-15_00014.jpg)
It’s a dynamically story driven game. It forces you to make decisions that not only affect you and your little sovereignty’s affairs, but also have a galactic wide impact. The level of diversity with the decisions that you make, and the randomness of the decisions and moves that the computer controlled opponents make really adds to that atmosphere.

But more than that, they’ve added a level of minute control to their diplomacy system that allows for deeper control on how you interact with the other species in the universe. It adds to the sense of scale that is already massive. Planetary management has also been revamped. Planning what’s built on your planets is a very good idea, as the approval rating does indeed affect diplomacy and gameplay. I had several planets annexed very easily due to a low approval rating and lack of an actual presence there. It took me a bit to realize that certain structures had certain effects, and that those effects play greatly into the larger picture.
Once released there will be 12 playable species that should each offer differing and perhaps even unique perspectives on the galactic race for awesomeness.

The Terran Alliance
The Yor Collective
The Drengin Empire
The Altarian Republic
The Drath Legion
The Torian Confederation
The Arcean Empire
The Dominion of Korx
The Iconian Refuge
The Thalan Empire
The Korath Clan
The Krynn Consulate

It’s also very addicting So how does it play? It’s rather engaging. It’s fun. It’s full of surprises. And most importantly, it feels very large. You’re part of a greater mechanism, and the little details they’ve added really do make it feel as if your decisions matter. Yes, it’s a 4X strategy game, and yes it resembles the genre. But the story and background is very well knit together in such a way that the unique story elements make it very appealing. It’s also very addicting.
I haven’t played a 4X strategy game in awhile, and I’ve forgotten the feeling of wanting to know what happens next. Sure, it’s easy to take a break and the pace can be slow, but that doesn’t mean that the thought and expectation of what’s to come isn’t enough to keep you engaged. You have no military capability when you begin. None. You have a scout ship with no weapons. What if you get attacked right away? What if you get invaded? God forbid it happen so early in the game. The anticipation of waiting for the warfare and defense technologies so that I can defend myself from the mysteries of the galaxy is actually kind of exciting.
But with all of that depth and the massive scale it can seem a bit overwhelming at times. There is so much to manage and so many little things that have to be taken care of in order to be successful. It’s huge. The interface does help a bit, though, as it will queue up anything that needs your attention. The galaxy does need you to manage it, however, and it’s a very large task despite being so fun.
Beta? Yeah, it’s still a beta. But remember it’s still in beta form and comes with all the appropriate disclaimers. You may find that it hangs when you get to a certain size, though starting a new game can clear that up easily enough. Maybe you can buy the entire navy of a competing species for very little (http://forums.galciv3.com/462030) because it seems they don’t understand trade economics yet. But the community is active and Stardock Corporation is very adamant about providing a great experience. They’re using this beta to listen to customers and their feedback. That’s what a beta is, and precisely what Steam Early Access is all about.
Right now in its current state Galactic Civilizations III is a more complete and enjoyable game than many games that are declared to be “done”. Thankfully it’s even 50% off on Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/226860/) until Monday March 2nd at 10AM Pacific time.
I personally recommend it. I’m having a tremendous amount of fun and I believe that it can still remain fun for many years to come. It’s a game that can be replayed with different outcomes and different play styles to mix it up.
The official release is slated for sometime in April of 2015, so look for the final and complete build by then. So far they seem to be on track and have a great product already.
Galactic Civilizations III was purchased with the reviewers own money via Steam. The reviewer is not being endorsed in any way whatsoever. He just happens to like the game.

Tenho no Steam o GC2, de quando foi oferecido no Steam.
Mas como pede a criação de uma conta Stardock, acabei por não o jogar.

Será que este 3 volta a forçar os jogadores a criarem mais uma conta num serviço qualquer?

Galactic Civilizations III Gets Steam Workshop Support – Millennium Falcon Nearly First in the Shop

Galactic Civilizations III already has an incredible amount of ship customization options within the game itself. Now you can share your unique creations with other GalCiv fans with support (http://steamcommunity.com/games/galciv3/announcements/detail/52139255229728143) for the Steam Workshop.

http://cdn4.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/previewfile_477234973.png

Steam Workshop support for Galactic Civilizations III adds some awesome turn-key ships to download. Already the community has added nearly 750 (and counting) different ship designs into the mix. Not surprising a lot of science fiction’s most iconic starships have made their way into the store. Ever want to send a mechanical battle-puppy (http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/?id=477234973) into to war? Now you can, and it’ll even wag its tail for you.
You’ll find a Star Destroyer, the Battlestar Galactica and of course the Millennium Falcon ready to be immediately installed and usable in your game. Care to have a salmon (http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/?id=477294239) cargo ship? Some of these are quite well done and very creative.
Galactic Civilizations III expands upon the ship design editor in the second game with far more options and almost complete modular control over your starship designs. If you can imagine it, then you can build it. And it doesn’t have to be gimped in features either.

Galactic Civilizations 3 sets a high bar for 4X strategy games. Galactic Civilizations 3 has been in open beta via Steam’s Early Access program since March of 2014. During that time it was updated on a very frequent basis, improving in quality and quantity by leaps and bounds until it finally released on May 14th 2014. We reviewed (http://wccftech.com/article/galactic-civilization-iii-preview-review/) a close-to-release version in Early Access and found it to be a better and more complete game than a lot of completed and released games. This new integration (http://steamcommunity.com/app/226860/workshop/) expresses Stardock’s commitment to continually improving Galactic Civilizations 3 and listening to community feedback.
Is anyone planning on adding any ships to the workshop? The first ship I downloaded was an X-Wing (http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=472877743&searchtext=), and it’s fairly true to form!

Galactic Civilizations III Gets Pirate Squirrels DLC, Updated to 1.3

Galactic Civilizations III (http://wccftech.com/article/galactic-civilization-iii-preview-review/) is receiving a major update today (http://steamcommunity.com/games/galciv3/announcements/detail/51019062854081108), moving on to version 1.3, and a new DLC (http://steamcommunity.com/games/galciv3/announcements/detail/51019062854082615) has been released. Stardock has focused on easing the strain of managing a large empire.

Pirate squirrels invade the galaxy in the new ‘Revenge of the Snathi DLC.First, the update is significant, if not necessarily large. They’ve added what are known as Planetary Governors, AI that you can assign to run the daily affairs of each planet, building improvements for you. This way you no longer have to worry about each and every small detail (of which there are many) to attend to.
The fleet management UI also has received a bit of improvement so that it’s much easier to take care of larger fleets of ships. Sometimes you’ll end up having so many that it became difficult to organize them all. Also included in that is an improved ship destination window, letting you move those massive fleets around the galaxy a bit easier. Thus far it seems to be a lot more streamlined.
Moving on to the DLC, they’ve added another playable race, the Snathi. These squirrel pirates have been alluded to in the base game, though they’re making their appearance as a playable race for the first time.

Revenge of the Snathi is the first campaign available for them our little squirrel associates. You’re tasked with leading the Snathi on a daring escape from their Precursor prison world, something not to be taken lightly. New ships have been added that are uniquely Snathi in origin as well as a new artifact that lets them salvage ships from destroyed enemies.

The Snathi are an ancient race of extremely intelligent and bloodthirsty squirrel-like creatures. They were created by the Dread Lords as the ultimate weapon, but were locked away…until now.
The update is out now for everyone and the DLC is $4.99 on Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/395990/).
We preview/reviewed the beta build of Galactic Civilizations III (http://wccftech.com/article/galactic-civilization-iii-preview-review/) and concluded then that it was perhaps one of the best 4X strategy games ever concocted. And that was in an incomplete beta form! Now it’s grown and matured into a well oiled machine that can nearly be played forever if you strategize correctly. It still remains a top recommended game due to the depth, customization and incredible story. That is, if you enjoy 4X strategy games.

'Mercenaries' Expansion For 'Galactic Civilizations III' Introduces Two New Factions, Soldiers For Hire

http://media.bestofmicro.com/P/M/555610/gallery/Galactic-Civilizations-III-Mercenaries-expansion_w_600.png (http://www.tomshardware.com/gallery/Galactic-Civilizations-III-Mercenaries-expansion,0101-555610-0-2-12-1-png-.html)
Less than a year after the release of Galactic Civlizations III, the team at Stardock Entertainment is already working on more content for its latest strategy game with an expansion called Mercenaries. In addition to a new campaign, it will include the ability to recruit special units and introduce two other factions.
As the name of the expansion suggests, you will be able to hire mercenaries throughout the intergalactic bazaars in the galaxy. These soldiers-for-hire are also a crucial part of the expansion’s campaign, which centers on the Torians, one of the two new factions. The aquatic-based species are attempting to escape a life of slavery under the Drengin Empire, and you must utilize mercenaries to aid the Torians.
Both the Torians and the ancient warrior faction of the Arceans will be playable in Mercenaries, and they'll come with their own unique traits, technology trees and skills.
Mercenaries will come out next month on February 18 and will cost $19.99. Stardock Entertainment is also working on another free update at the same time as the release of the expansion. Update version 1.6 will bring about various changes such as improvements to the AI, visual upgrades and more detailed results after each match.

Galactic Civilizations III goes rogue with the Mercenaries Expansion

Galactic Civilizations III: Mercenaries, the first full-blown expansion for its popular 4X space strategy game is now live on Steam. It adds a new campaign, Galactic Bazaars, new races, the ability to recruit elite units with special abilities, new ship parts, and much more.

http://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/5/0/50537_1_galactic-civilizations-iii-goes-rogue-mercenaries-expansion.png

In Mercenaries, you will be able to visit new Galactic Bazaars where you can hire mercenaries to assist in expanding across the galaxy. With several new mercenary ships and multiple Bazaars to discover on each map, the expansion offers hours of unique gameplay.

"Once they're gone, they're gone," said Paul Boyer, Lead Designer of Galactic Civilizations III. "When a mercenary is hired by a civilization in a game, it is no longer available to the others. You will need to act quickly and choose wisely in order to get the best mercenaries and leave your enemies without." The campaign for Mercenaries centers around the peaceful Torian race who have long been enslaved and farmed for their meat by the cruel Drengin. Explore and discover mercenaries, then hire them to aid in escaping the oppressors. Liberate the Torians and help them rebuild their shattered civilization while staying out of reach of the Drengin.

The expansion also includes the Arcean faction and an old favorite from Galactic Civilizations II, the Torians. The Arceans are an ancient and honorable civilization of warriors and the Torians are an aquatic species seeking to escape the slavery of the Drengin. Both races come with new traits, abilities, and tech trees.

Along with this expansion, Stardock is releasing the v1.6 update to the base game, which is a free update for all Galactic Civilizations III game owners. Improvements include more detailed match results, AI improvements, visual updates, and balance improvements.
