Water resistant mid-ranger
Sony has launched the Xperia M4 Aqua, a slim and stylish mid-range smartphone with IP68 certification.

The device is dustproof and can be submerged in 1.5 metres of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. On the plus side, there’s no cap on the microUSB port, so you don’t have to fiddle with it when it runs out of juice. Snapdragon 615 and Lollipop on board The Xperia M4 Aqua (http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/products/phones/xperia-m4-aqua/) looks a lot like the flagship Xperia Z3, but it’s an all-plastic design. Still, this is a mid-range device, so we don’t really expect fancy materials.
The phone is powered by a Snapdragon 615 SoC with LTE support. This is a 64-bit octa-core based on Cortex-A53 cores, with an Adreno 405 GPU in tow. The phone 2GB of RAM and 8GB of storage, and there’s a microSD slot on board as well.
The phone has a 5-inch 720p panel, with a relatively small footprint of 145.5mm x 72.6mm x 7.3mm. It weighs 136g. The phone has a 2400mAh battery, but Sony promises 2-day battery life. The Aqua will ship with Android 5.0 Lollipop.
Cameras galore The Xperia M4 Aqua has a 13-megapixel rear camera with an f/2.0 aperture. Since it’s waterproof, you could even use it in murky fishing waters to show off your catch. The front camera is a 5-megapixel affair with an 88-degree field of view. There’s another neat detail that we still miss on most phones – a dedicated shutter button on the side.
The promo video emphasises camera quality and the fact you can get nice shots in wet and unhospitable environments.

The phone should go on sale in a couple of months, in white, black and coral red colour options. The MSRP is $330, or about €300 in Euroland. It’s not exactly a bargain, and we’d like to see a bit more storage on board given the price. In case you need something (a lot) cheaper, Sony launched the entry-level Xperia E4 (http://www.fudzilla.com/news/mobile/37042-sony-xperia-e4-priced-at-129-in-europe) last week and it's priced at a relatively modest €129.

Sony seems to be crippling its own smartphone storage (http://www.kitguru.net/laptops/mobile/matthew-wilson/sony-seems-to-be-crippling-its-own-smartphone-storage/)

Sony has gone ahead and crippled the storage capabilities of one of its budget smartphones, the Xperia M4 Aqua, as owners of the 8GB device can only actually access 1.26GB of it. This seems to be largely down to the inclusion of Android 5.0 Lollipop, which apparently takes up 4GB of space in total, alongside some large pre-installed apps.
The remaining space is largely occupied by Sony’s own pre-installed apps, many of which can’t be deleted without rooting the device. All of this was pointed out by XperiaBlog (http://www.xperiablog.net/2015/06/07/sony-cripples-the-8gb-xperia-m4-aqua/), which recently took a look at the smartphone.

The Xperia M4 Aqua is a budget device so many likely won’t face this issue anyway. The phone has a 720p screen, a low-end Qualcomm processor and can be resistant to water. While I couldn’t find the following text myself, the folks over at The Inquirer (http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2412089/sony-xperia-m4-aqua-comes-with-just-12gb-usable-storage?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=Twitterfeed&utm_term=INQ&utm_content=INQ) even pointed out that Sony’s website at one point claimed that Xperia M4 Aqua users would have access to as much as 3GB of that internal memory:
“The E2303, E2353 and E2312 have 3GB of free memory available to the user for downloaded applications and their data, music, pictures and movies while each device has up to 8GB of flash memory in total”, Sony’s official product page (http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/products/phones/xperia-m4-aqua/specifications/#tabs)apparently noted.
The Xperia M4 Aqua was revealed at the Mobile World Congress this year. If you are looking for a cheap Android smartphone, then it looks like Motorola is still the way to go, with the Moto G still offering good value.
