Until Dawn – Intense violence, Sexual themes and more detailed for the PS4 Horror Exclusive

The ESRB has rated the upcoming Until Dawn, providing a few details about the upcoming PS4 exclusive. Until Dawn has received a mature rating due to blood, gore, intense violence, sexual themes and strong language.
http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Until-Dawn-6-635x357.jpg (http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Until-Dawn-6.jpg)
In regards to sexual themes, the game has some suggestive dialogue in addition to several suspect scenes, as the ESRB describes below:

The game includes some sexual material: dialogue that contains sexual remarks (e.g., “Let’s party like we’re f**king porn stars and make this one trip we will never forget” and ‘I mean if you’re not gonna bang her…maybe Mike’ll take up the case.”); a character looking at various sexual positions in a Kama Sutra book; a woman performing a striptease for a man, removing her clothes down to her undergarments. The words “f**k,” “sh*t,” and “d*ck” are heard in dialogue.
http://cdn2.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Until-Dawn-21-635x357.jpg (http://cdn4.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Until-Dawn-21.jpg)
Until Dawn is also described as extremely violent and gruesome:

This is a survival-horror adventure game in which players help eight friends survive a serial killer at a mountain retreat. As players progress through the game, they explore the fully interactive environments, choosing a variety of action/decision-paths via on-screen prompts. Some choices can lead to depictions of intense violence and/or gore: characters shot in the head; characters cut in half by a saw blade; characters disemboweled or decapitated by a creature; a character forced to cut off segments of his fingers. Large blood-splatter effects occur frequently as characters are killed or injured; some sequences depict blood stains in the environment and around corpses.

Until Dawn Gets ‘Choices’ Interactive Live-Action Trailer

Sony has released a new live-action interactive trailer for PlayStation 4’s upcoming exclusive Until Dawn, titled ‘Choices”.
http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Until-Dawn8-635x357.jpg (http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Until-Dawn8.jpg)
The Film Director explains:

We took our inspiration from the many choices presented in the game and from its cinematic style. We want to give the viewer a feeling of what it’s like being caught up with a killer on the loose – having to make life threatening decisions on the run.
Most people can relate to watching a horror and disapprove of the decisions made by the main protagonists.
Now you can actually have a say in them – and carry full responsibility if the protagonist gets away or is killed in a brutal way …we find that extremely cool!

Gaming trailers just got real, check this immersive Until Dawn video

Although not in-game footage specifically, this trailer is "inspired by the emotional experience of Until Dawn" and features one young woman's bid to free herself from the clutches of serial-killing madmen.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9xRBc2FxCQ

This R18+ PlayStation 4 exclusive title is 'Road Not Taken - Until Dawn' and is based on a classic poem by Robert Frost. The video itself is produced by the PlayStation Australian team and depicts some of the sequences of gameplay you can come to expect in Until Dawn, deciding the fate of your character depending on action you take.

The main character, Sam, is played here by Hayden Panetierre, and this short film showcases ways that you might go about escaping or confronting your masked killer, trying all options available through a process of trial and error.

Early reviews of Until Dawn are quite favorableEarly reviews of the game, are quite good, which is indeed both a surprise and a relief. Until Dawn being one of the very few PlayStation 4 exclusives to release this year, has a lot running on it. It seems that Sony’s faith in the title has paid off, as most reviewers seem pleased with the experience that Until Dawn provides.
While it can be argued that it does not tick all the boxes on what traditionally constitutes a “game”, at least not for everyone, it still provides an exceptionally entertaining “interactive horror movie” experience. The performances appear to be solid, further enhancing the immersion of the quite competent story, and the pressure that the choices weigh on the player drive the tension even more.
PlayStation 4 gamers who have pre-ordered the digital copy of horror exclusive Until Dawn, can now pre-load the game, as Sony has announced that pre-loading is now live (http://wccftech.com/sony-announces-pre-loading-for-ps4-exclusive-until-dawn-is-now-live-46gb-required/).

Players Facing Issues While Trying to Play PS4 Exclusive Until Dawn – Here’s a Temporary Fix

This year’s one of the most awaited exclusive video game titles is now out on Sony’s PlayStation 4 console. Until Dawn offers a rather unique horror gaming experience, and reviews of the game suggest that it would have been a shame if Sony had canned it, which at one point seemed like the case. The adventure survival horror game plays quite well, but it seems like its release isn’t going exactly to plan, as a number of players who preordered the digital copy of the game are reporting that they can’t play the game due to an initial bug.
http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Until-Dawn-635x357.jpg (http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Until-Dawn.jpg)
Sony is Investigating the Issues That Players Who Pre-Ordered the Game Digitally are Facing – Temporary Workaround RevealedUnlike other major triple-A video games coming out this year, Supermassive Games’ Until Dawn somewhat lacked a decent amount of pre-release buzz from Sony’s well-oiled hype machine. The game launched yesterday, and while there are things that could’ve been done better, the gameplay is strong and the depth with which your choices matter and affect the final result completely immerses you into the game, delivering a unique and fun gameplay experience. PlayStation 4 players are already enjoying the game, however, many players who purchased it digitally are facing a major issue that prevents them from playing it at all.

According to numerous reports on PlayStation forums (http://community.us.playstation.com/t5/Games-Services/Until-Dawn-saying-128-days-until-available/td-p/45338352/highlight/true), the affected players are prompted with a message that reads: “128 days until available” after they download the game and try to boot it. Sony has acknowledged the issue and confirmed that the team is looking into it. “Our store team is currently investigating the issue,” a PlayStation Support representative wrote. “We’ll update the thread once we receive an update.” The representative also came up with (http://community.us.playstation.com/t5/Games-Services/Until-Dawn-saying-128-days-until-available/m-p/45340249#U45340249) a temporary workaround, which according to some, doesn’t work, but according to others, it does. You can give it a try. Follow the steps shared below to see if it works for you.

Navigate to the item on the PlayStation Store
Purchase the free version of Until Dawn (or if you have that already, another free game/item such as Singstar)
Download the file to your system (if the file is already downloaded and installed, please skip this step and move to step 4)
Use the Restore Licenses option by navigating to Settings >> PlayStation(tm)Network/Account Management >> Restore Licenses
Attempt to boot the game. If the game still does not boot at this point, delete the file, re-download and repeat step 4.

Originally announced as a PlayStation 3 exclusive title, Until Dawn underwent several development changes before being re-announced exclusively for Sony’s eighth generation PlayStation 4 console in 2014. The game, according to several critics, is similar to PlayStation 3 exclusive title Heavy Rain.

Until Dawn Writer: The Butterly Effect A “Ridiculously Exciting Way To Tell A Story”

While we’re still waiting to learn about Quantic Dream’s first PlayStation 4 project (rumors whispers (http://wccftech.com/insider-ps4-3-00-beta-update-to-release-on-sep-2-quantic-dream-to-reveal-game-at-paris-games-week/) of a reveal at Paris Games Week in late October), Sony has just released a fairly similar (albeit horror themed) kind of title: Until Dawn by Supermassive Games.
http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Until-Dawn6-635x357.jpg (http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Until-Dawn6.jpg)
One of the writers involved with the development, Graham Reznick, had a very interesting interview with Rely on Horror (http://www.relyonhorror.com/in-depth/interview-from-homage-to-subversion-crafting-until-dawns-narrative-w-graham-reznick/). When talking about the defining feature of Until Dawn, the so-called butterfly effect which prompts a chain of reactions after players make a choice, Reznick said that it was a ridiculously exciting way to tell a story.

The branching narrative and multiple path mechanic in UNTIL DAWN (called “The Butterfly Effect”) was a ridiculously exciting way to tell a story. As a writer, you often imagine various different pathways your stories and characters could take but the variants vanish as soon as you pick one. In UNTIL DAWN, those musings were solidified into actual scripts. It was fun to play out different scenarios and see how subtle changes would have big effects. It was also a huge learning experience and not something there was a lot of precedent for to draw from, so we had to invent a lot of little workflow tricks to make it work. Supermassive had a crazy flow chart program to keep it all consistent!
Reznick also added that it was super challenging to have to take all those branching pathways into account while writing the plot of Until Dawn.

Writing the branching storylines in UNTIL DAWN and keeping the characters consistent across them was like being a schizophrenic with multiple personalities smearing their brain into parallel dimensions in several time periods all at once. In other words, it was super fun. But also super challenging. Larry Fessenden and I would take chunks of the game and go off and write on our own, and then we would reconvene and read and perform each others dialogue over Skype, punching it up and rewriting it as we did, usually at least twice. We did this partially to error-check the massive amounts of work, but also to do reading passes where we’d consider which relationships the characters currently had with each other. We also had to consider the player’s expectations of the story, and make sure that no matter what choices they made and what characters were killed, they would get a strong and satisfying arc for most of them. The player in UNTIL DAWN is a direct collaborator in crafting their own experience of the story, and we always had to consider that and respect them as we’d respect another co-writer.
In Until Dawn, eight friends are trapped on a mountain retreat and have to make it through the night. Popular actors such as Hayden Panettiere (Heroes, Nashville), Rami Malek (Need for Speed, Mr. Robot), Brett Dalton (Agents of Shield) and Peter Stormare (Fargo, Prison Break) portray some of the game’s characters.
The PS4 exclusive can be downloaded from the PlayStation Store (https://store.playstation.com/#%21/en-us/games/until-dawn/cid=UP9000-CUSA00359_00-UNTILDAWN0000001) for $/€ 59.99.
Stay tuned for our review, which is coming soon.

Until Dawn Sony PlayStation 4 Review

It's fair to say that Heavy Rain was promoted by Sony as the next big thing in video games. A game that was hyped for most of the PS3 system life, which in the end turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. It was not a bad game per se, but it was not the earth shattering innovation that had been promised. Thus, the adventure genre on consoles died down a bit, until Telltale Games came along with their games based on famous franchises. Whilst that was going on, a little known developer, Supermassive Games, was working on an adventure game all of its own, Until Dawn. Starting off originally as a PS3 Move game, we fast forward a few years and Until Dawn is here on a brand new platform and with the move support dropped. It may have taken a while to arrive, but there is no doubt this was the best decision, as Until Dawn is one of the freshest games to arrive so far in 2015.

Until Dawn tells the story of a group of young college kids on holiday in the remote Blackwood Pines. Twelve months prior to the events of the game, the group had visited Blackwood Pines and the two sisters of one of the main characters had gone missing and are now presumed dead after a prank gone wrong. The group is returning to the mountain 12 months later to try and find some closure from the events and to move on with their lives. Instead, they find out that they are not alone on the mountain and it will take every inch of their brawn and brains to survive through the night.

Like Heavy Rain, Until Dawn is primarily an adventure game with Quick Time Events and a lot of exploring to do. This is not a game that will tax you with puzzle solving, but instead ask you to make split second decisions which affect the outcome. The main feature of this game is the use of the butterfly effect. Basically almost every action you take can affect what happens later on and whether a character can survive the night or not. It is very likely that every individual play through will be quite unique - assuming you do not cheat and use a guide that is, we strongly discourage you from doing so as it would ruin the experience. It's a game where even the smallest task counts. For example, in one such area, the character was able to escape as they had seen the location of a baseball bat earlier. If you do not find that bat prior to the event, the option is just not there.

On paper, walking around to find clues and just chat with characters may sound boring, but as Telltale Games have shown, if you can build an adventure game which takes into account your actions, then it can be incredibly compelling. Supermassive have taken this to the next level because it's generally more subtle. Whilst the game informs you when a butterfly effect moment occurs, there are times where moves you make impact the path of the storyline and you are not informed of it.

http://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/content/7/3/7319_2_until-dawn-sony-playstation-4-review.jpg

One area where the developers and writers really excelled is with the character development and location. This is basically a B-grade (and we mean this in the most affectionate manner possible) film with your college jock, nerd, hot chick, and smart one all rolled into one crazy group of teenagers. The tropes borrowed from the horror genre of movies are obvious (and this is not a bad thing). One such example is a sequence where a female blonde character walks around an empty house in only a towel. However, the game is also very good at catching you out. There will be times where you expect a scare or possible death sequence to occur only for the game to continue on, and then scare the living daylights out of you when you least expect it.

Until Dawn certainly had a troubled development. The game was initially meant to be released on PlayStation 3, and the plan was to make it a first person title that exploited the Move controller.
After the game went dark during 2013, some assumed that it had been cancelled. However, Until Dawn resurfaced at Gamescom 2014 and showcased its significant changes: Move support had been dropped in favor of DualShock 4, and the game would now be played in third person view. Moreover, it would now release on PlayStation 4.

Usually, there are good reasons to be skeptical of a troubled development phase, as history recorded many incomplete or rough games when it happened. Thankfully, this is not the case at all with Until Dawn: Supermassive Games managed to wrap a polished and satisfying package.
In terms of genre, this falls firmly in the same category of Quantic Dream’s Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls, although with a far more deliberate horror theme. The premise is that a group of friends gather at a mountain retreat during winter, one year after a tragedy struck them all at that very place.
The first gameplay twist of Until Dawn is that you’ll play as all of these characters at one point or another. Granted, some of them enjoy far longer playthroughs than others, but the relevant point is that you’re ultimately responsible for their fate. All of them are at severe risk of death in this fateful night and you need to keep them alive on your own, at least until dawn.
http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Until-Dawn-1-635x357.png (http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Until-Dawn-1.png)
This single feature ensures that players will get multiple perspectives on what’s going on and on the characters themselves. Early in the story, it’s pretty easy to write off a certain character as an asshole, but while playing as him/her you might change your mind, just like in the best movies or books.
The defining gameplay element of Until Dawn, however, is without a doubt The Butterly Effect. It’s a choice&consequence system that creates ripples in the game depending on your choices, not only in determining whether that character will die, but also in regards to the plot and to the relationships between characters.

A side effect of this system is that you won’t be able to see all the content or learn all the mysteries of Blackwood Pines in the first playthrough. The very structure of Until Dawn encourages to play the game multiple times, even if just to see if you can save a certain character who died suddenly the previous time.
In terms of raw gameplay mechanics, if you get annoyed by doing Quick Time Events, then perhaps Until Dawn isn’t the game for you as most of the control system revolves around them. However, it’s typical for this kind of interactive story driven adventures, and ultimately even if you miss a QTE there is no such thing as a Game Over screen; because of The Butterly Effect, it all just becomes part of the story thus preventing most of the frustration usually associated with QTEs.
The actors were all most convincing in their performancesI’ll be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of the horror genre. In fact, chances to see me in line for the next horror flick are basically none. Despite this, Until Dawn kept me engaged and interested all the way (and a bit scared – yes, I jumped a few times) thanks to its intriguing plot. Nothing is as it seems up on this mountain, and the writers definitely did a fine job in weaving the story, which is guaranteed to grab your attention.
However, I have to give a merit share for this to the actors, who were all most convincing in their performances. Once again, after hiring the likes of Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe for Beyond: Two Souls, Sony brought some renowned faces to work on Until Dawn; some examples are Peter Stormare (Fargo, Prison Break), Rami Malek (Need for Speed, Mr. Robot), Hayden Panettiere (Heroes, Nashville) and Brett Dalton (Agents of Shield).
It paid off, that’s for sure, and it’s another indication that Hollywood and the gaming industry may very well work together successfully.

In terms of graphics, Until Dawn uses Killzone: Shadow Fall’s engine. Regardless to say, it looks quite stunning at times, however its frame rate clearly dips occasionally below 30FPS; this doesn’t affect gameplay in any significant way, though.
When it comes to the rendition of facial expressions, the game does well enough, but it doesn’t quite set a new standard. Sony’s PlayStation 4 can certainly do better in this regard, and I fully expect it will with Quantic Dream’s new game. The sound and music, on the other hand, are perfectly adequate for the horror vibe and I would be hard pressed to pinpoint how they could be improved.
