Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has passed away

Nintendo released a brief statement (http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2015/150713e.pdf) today, passing on the news that company president Satoru Iwata has passed away. Mr Iwata was just 55 years old but had been suffering from cancer. Nintendo said that a growth in Mr Iwata's bile duct was the cause of his death. The Nintendo president had surgery to try and remove the growth last year and after a brief absence, to recover, resumed his duties at the company.

Flags are flying at half-mast, (https://twitter.com/nochi0079/status/620410389495296000) Nintendo HQ today. Satoru Iwata was Nintendo's fourth president. Before reaching the top at Nintendo he had been a programmer, engineer and designer at HAL Laboratory, famous for the Smash Brothers and the Kirby series of games. In May 2002 he was appointed President of Nintendo.
Iwata had a strategy to widen the appeal of Nintendo products by selling entertainment devices and software that went beyond the traditional gaming market. Under his reign the first such product was the Nintendo DS which was released in 2004. The DS was quite a departure from previous 'Gameboy' designs with its dual screens and stylus. On the software front it appealed to a wider audience with its educational and training titles.

In 2006 the Nintendo Wii launched and was a huge success thanks to appealing to this wider market again - and going even further to introduce active, dance and fitness style computer games. Many software titles, the controllers and notable accessories like the Balance Board, prized gamers off the sofa as they were inspired to bounce around the living room.
Later Nintendo products have had a harder time in the market, facing powerful, expensive smartphone and tablet competition on the portable side and the hardcore console gamers and powerful gaming PCs in the living room/bedroom. Its next big launch, rumoured to be called Nintendo NX console and due in about a year's time, is the subject of anxious discussions among Nintendo fans.
Twitter (https://twitter.com/search?q=Satoru%20Iwata&src=typd) is currently overflowing with tributes to Mr Iwata.

Mario Creator Shigeru Miyamoto Heavily Favored To Become Nintendo's Next CEO

With the passing (http://hothardware.com/news/longtime-nintendo-ceo-satoru-iwata-is-dead-at-55) of Nintendo's beloved President and CEO Satoru Iwata, an inevitability arises: the company needs a highly capable successor. We're sure Nintendo (http://hothardware.com/tags/nintendo) itself is still in the initial steps of deciding on a successor, but the collective Web has wasted no time in naming someone who would be perfect to head the big N: Shigeru Miyamoto. While Nintendo has a number of popular faces, it's hard to beat the presence of Miyamoto -- he's a living legend. He cares a lot about games and gamers, and he has an incredible history that easily qualifies him to take the helm.

http://hothardware.com/ContentImages/NewsItem/34334/content/Shigeru_Miyamoto.jpg We can start with the fact that Miyamoto has been with Nintendo since it first got its feet wet with video games -- six years before the 1983 release of the Nintendo Entertainment System. Here's a sampling of some series Miyamoto has himself created: Mario (http://hothardware.com/tags/mario), Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox, and F-Zero. To create one of these now iconic series would be impressive, but he created them all, and then some.
Given his amazing contributions to Nintendo, and his likability -- not to mention his ability to captivate crowds -- he seems like the perfect fit for Nintendo CEO. That of course assumes he'd even want the position, but I think it's safe to say that the company would be in great hands if he were to take the position.

Satoru Iwata immortalised in modded Balloon Fight ROM (http://www.kitguru.net/gaming/development/jon-martindale/satoru-iwata-immortalised-in-modded-balloon-fight-rom/)

The world of gaming was shocked earlier this week when we learned that long time Nintendo director and video game icon, Satoru Iwata had passed away at the age of just 55 (http://goo.gl/zjWj9u). Since then memorials and well wishes for the man have been forthcoming from around the world, but perhaps none quite so poignant at this. One fan turned him into a playable character in a modified version of Balloon Fight, one of the first games Iwata ever worked on at Nintendo.
http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/iwata2-1024x871.jpg (http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/iwata2.jpg)
To achieve this, ROM hacker John Riggs, took a sprite from Earthbound – another game Iwata was partly responsible for – and modified it to fit into Balloon Fight’s design. To make this an even more fitting tribute, Iwata’s ‘balloons’ are actually miniature green Kirby sprites, since the pink blob’s first outing was yet another title that Iwata had a hand in creating.

If you want to experience the joys of floating around as a Kirby propelled Iwata, you can download the patch to apply to Balloon Fight here (http://s000.tinyupload.com/?file_id=32483167787778898406). However, if you want to own this special edition of the game on an actual NES cartridge, then you can buy one from Riggs himself, who will be sending all profits to the Extra Life charity.
Just email him at johnblueriggs@gmail.com if you want one.

Nintendo releases touching memorial address for Satoru Iwata

The gaming world was turned upside down after it was announced Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, 55, died earlier this week. Nintendo senior managing director Genyo Takeda delivered the memorial address during Iwata's funeral, which was posted online by Polygon.

http://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/4/6/46492_01_nintendo-releases-touching-memorial-address-satoru-iwata.jpg

In the eulogy, Takeda spoke of Iwata's personal and professional successes, and vowed to support Iwata's legacy.

"As we gather here today for a joint funeral with Nintendo Co., Ltd. and Mr. Iwata's family, I would like to share my heartfelt condolences. President Iwata, allow me to call you Iwata-san, just as I always used to.
Iwata-san, you left us far too soon. Having just chaired our shareholders' meeting the other day on June 26, the news of your sudden death has left all the employees overcome with a deep sorrow. The late Yamauchi-san passed the baton to you in naming you the president of Nintendo in 2002, and the two Senior Managing Directors of the company, Shigeru Miyamoto and I, have been assisting and working alongside you. Being rather short-tempered myself, the thing that I am most deeply struck by is that you were a true leader in every sense of the word, overflowing with compassion for people. You always maintained a two-way dialogue, even with the next generation of employees, or with much younger members of the development and marketing teams, or with employees outside of Japan whose different customs and cultures can make communication challenging - sometimes even admitting your own mistakes to them. You demonstrated this through your belief that people could eventually come to understand one another, and your strong conviction that the best way for us to grow is through patient communication, even if it took several times, a dozen times or even seemingly endless discussion.
You succeeded in planting the seed in employees' hearts that, in order to solve an issue, there is a fundamental cycle whereby you make a hypothesis, execute the plan, see the result and then make adjustments, and by which you have caringly nurtured these seeds to sprout and mature into plants.
Until now, our successors and the younger generation would take a few first steps and then look back at you for guidance because they could not tell if they had chosen the right path. Today they cannot ask for your guidance anymore.
However, I am sure that they have already made the firm determination that they will continue on their own, making the hypothesis, executing the plan, seeing the results and reflecting on the results to improve and adjust by themselves.
In the face of your unbelievable passing it will surely take some time before we can emerge from this deep sorrow. Please know, however, that the seeds you have planted, and the plants that have sprouted will put forth small flowers as they bring smiles to the faces of people around the world, blossom into a grand flower bigger than even you, our leader, Iwata-san. Together with Miyamoto and others of our generation, we swear in our hearts that we will continue our efforts so that, someday, we can report and present to you the blossoming of these flowers. May you continuously watch over and guide us managers, our employees and your family.
On behalf of all of us, I would like to offer my heartfelt condolences and sincerest prayer. May you rest in peace, Iwata-san."

Satoru Iwata to receive posthumous lifetime achievement award (http://www.kitguru.net/channel/jon-martindale/satoru-iwata-to-receive-posthumous-lifetime-achievement-award/)

Recently deceased Nintento President, Satoru Iwata, is set to have his years at the Japanese game maker honoured, by being given this year’s Lifetime Achievement award at the 2016 DICE awards. This will be the first time it has ever been handed out posthumously.
Iwata was one of Nintendo’s most long-standing executives, but he started as an outside contractor, programming on games like Pokémon Silver/Gold and Pokémon Stadium. He also previously programmed classics from gaming’s history like Balloon Fight, Earthbound and the early Kirby games.

However in the early ’00s he officially joined Nintendo as the head of its corporate planning division and pushed to reduce game development costs, while preserving quality. Following profit jumps by double digit per cent points, Iwata was promoted, after long-time president Hiroshi Yamauchi stepped down. He would hold that role until the time of his own death on 11th July 2015.
Even with his successes in life, receiving the DICE Lifetime Achievement award is still quite an honour. Only five people have been awarded it in the past and it’s not given out every year. Iwata joins the likes of founder of Nintendo America, Minoru Arakawa, the ‘father of PlayStation’ Ken Kutaragi and Bing Gordon, ex-Chief Creative Officer at EA Games.
Also set to be awarded at this year’s DICE ceremony is Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima, who will be welcomed into the DICE Hall of Fame. He joins just as star-studded a list as Iwata, with the likes of Valve’s Gabe Newell, Epic’s Tim Sweeney and Dan and Sam Houser for making GTA.
