Swatch has already manufactured 20,000 smartwatch units

Swatch CEO Nick Hayek said his company will release the Swatch NFC smartwatch this summer, and there are already 20,000 units ready for launch. The connected watch isn't designed to be a smartphone on your wrist, but will be able to support wireless payments and other mobile functions.

"We will launch it in the US, China and Switzerland," Hayek said in a statement to the Wall Street Journal. "We have 20,000 already in stock and we are very optimistic about the watch."

Hayek didn't disclose what impact the Apple Watch has had on the company, but Swatch's effort to join the smartwatch market should be a telling sign. I think it's a good move by Swatch - as the Apple Watch and other smartwatches won't take the high-end market - but will pressure the lower-end Swatch target market.

Swatch is taking a calculated approach (http://www.tweaktown.com/news/39990/swatch-tries-to-jump-into-smartwatch-market-on-its-own-terms/index.html) to the smartwatch market, and is marketing towards specific consumers.

Swiss newspaper: Swatch planning bigger effort in smartwatch market

Swatch is taking a relatively cautious approach (http://www.tweaktown.com/news/39990/swatch-tries-to-jump-into-smartwatch-market-on-its-own-terms/index.html) to the smartwatch market, in an effort to avoid directly competing against the Apple Watch, Motorola Moto 360, and other smartwatches. However, the Swiss watch company has plenty of growth for its smartwatch product portfolio - while providing individual smartwatch features in its devices.

"Our product is called Touch Zero One and that gives enough room for Zero Five, Zero Nine," said Nick Hayek, CEO of the Swatch Group, according to the Tages-Anzeiger newspaper in Switzerland. "The Touch Zero One is not the end of the progression."

The Swatch Touch Zero Two will launch during the Rio Olympic Games 2016 next summer in Brazil.

In early July, Hayek said Swatch manufactured 20,000 smartwatch units (http://www.tweaktown.com/news/46494/swatch-already-manufactured-20-000-smartwatch-units/index.html) - with an aim of launching in the United States, China and Switzerland. It looks like the watch manufacturing company has more ambitious plans for the wearables market.
