Samsung copies Apple's poor results

Smartphone slide continues
Samsung had a downbeat outlook for the second half of the year as smartphone market growth slows.

The results mirror similar patterns which are emerging with its rival Apple, which also saw a slump reduction on its iPhone sales and a predicted fall in China sales.
Samsung reported a four-percent fall in second-quarter profit and ruled out a "special dividend" similar to a big year-end pay-out for 2014.
Samsung's dominance is being chipped away at the low-to-mid end by Chinese rivals such as Huawei Technologies, while China follows some markets show signs of saturation.
Samsung is still the top smartphone maker in April-June, but shipments fell in part due to an inability to build enough curved-screen Galaxy S6 edge handsets.
The firm said its mobile division will launch new larger-screen phones in the third quarter but may not improve earnings.
Second-quarter profit was $5.9 billion, matching the company's estimate issued earlier this month.
"While 2H 2015 is expected to present mounting challenges, the company will try to improve earnings," Samsung said.
Samsung's mobile business booked a 38 percent decline. It expects smartphone shipments to rise in the third quarter from the second, but said average selling prices could fall due to price adjustments for S6 models aimed at boosting sales.
The firm has brought forward the launch of its latest Galaxy Note phone to August from September. Rumours are that it plans a larger version of the S6 edge.
Samsung's chips division reported profit of $290 million, its highest since the third quarter of 2010, due to demand for memory chips and sales growth in mobile processors.

Samsung to Invest $3 Billion For AMOLED Production; Is Apple Finally Adopting OLEDS For iPhones?

Smartphones, tablets, and wearables will become an omnipresent entity in 2016, which is perhaps the only reason why Samsung has taken upon itself to invest a mammoth amount of $3 billion USD to proliferate its AMOLED production capacity in the region of Vietnam. The aforementioned amount is three times more what the company had invested in the same region last year. This year, the company will be investing more in order to increase production of various types of OLED panels.
http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/samsung-oled-flexible-635x357.jpg (http://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/samsung-oled-flexible.jpg)
AMOLED Production Increase From Samsung Can Only Mean That iPhones Are Going To Adopt To These Form Of Displays Very SoonCTimes (http://en.ctimes.com.tw/DispNews.asp?O=HJZ8A816G3GSAA00N3) reports that previously, Samsung used its OLED panels to be incorporated in to the company’s own devices. Now, with emerging smartphone companies like Huawei, Meizu, Xiaomi and many more, Samsung will have its hands full as majority of these companies want AMOLED displays to be incorporated in to their high-end smartphone lineup. Despite the fact that AMOLED displays are much more expensive to manufacture as compared to different display solutions, these still provide the best possible image quality and are much more energy efficient.

Additionally, it has also been revealed that Samsung’s biggest rival in the smartphone industry Apple, will be making a switch to AMOLED displays in the foreseeable future. We previously reported that the company has begun to tap South Korean firms (http://wccftech.com/apple-rumored-roll-curved-iphones-2018/) to produce AMOLED displays since these will be the preferred solution due thanks to their flexibility. Samsung has also been said to roll out flexible AMOLED displays by 2016 (http://wccftech.com/samsung-expected-roll-foldable-smartphones-2016-2/), and these are the ones that will be placed in upcoming handsets.
With these foldable displays, Samsung intends on releasing flexible smartphones, which will definitely prompt other companies to follow suit and incorporate the same solution on to their mobile devices. With the amount of investment that Samsung has injected in to Vietnam, we should expect a large volume of these displays to come through during Q4, 2015, as well as the beginning of 2016.

Reports claim Samsung owned a third of all NAND flash revenue in Q3

There's no denying that Samsung isn't a big player in the NAND flash game, with a report now confirming exactly how much dominance that this company asserted over the market in recent times.

http://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/4/8/48742_082_reports-claim-samsung-owned-third-nand-flash-revenue-q3.jpg (http://www.tweaktown.com/image.php?image=imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/4/8/48742_082_reports-claim-samsung-owned-third-nand-flash-revenue-q3_full.jpg)

DRAMeXchange (http://www.dramexchange.com/) and Storage Newsletter (http://www.storagenewsletter.com/rubriques/market-reportsresearch/samsung-controlled-one-third-of-nand-flash-revenue-in-3q15-dramexchange/) reported that not only did NAND flash pricing decline in the third quarter of 2015, but the global flash revenue raised 2.4% as a result. This gain in revenue was seemingly soaked up mainly by Samsung, with this piece further confirming that the technology giant controlled 31.5% of all NAND revenue during this time period.

With second place going to Toshiba at 20.5% and SanDisk lagging behind at 15.4%, it becomes apparent that Samsung are well ahead of its competition. This percentage difference gap is smaller than quarter 2 though, with Samsung posting a 32.6% market share compared to 19.1% for Toshiba and 13.4% for SanDisk. It's also interesting to note that Micron has recently slipped out of third place from Q2 - Q3, dropping a 1.4% share.

Samsung warns of weaker earnings

Copies Apple again
It seems that Apple is not the only one which is being hard hit by a fall in interest in smartphones. its rival Samsung is reporting the same sort of problems, only it has the advantage of other products it can fall back on and a big R&D budget for future products.

Samung warned that its future results might be soft due to slowing economic growth in China and weaker emerging market currencies.
"Broadly weaker IT demand will make it difficult to maintain 2016 profits at the level of the previous year's," Samsung said in a statement accompanying its fourth-quarter results, adding that "challenging business conditions" would remain for the current quarter and last throughout the first half of this year.
Samsung said that the strength of the Korean won compared to other major currencies had helped its third-quarter earnings, but changed to a negative impact of about $331 million in the fourth quarter.
Samsung said its October-December operating profit was $5.05 billion, matching its earlier guidance. Revenue rose 1.1 percent slightly better than it predicted.
As in previous quarters, sales of Samsung mobile phones were pressured by increasing competition from other Android smartphone makers who are targeting the same growth markets, including China and India. The company’s mobile division saw a 7.3 percent decline from the previous quarter.
Some investors and analysts believe Samsung will see its profit fall for the second time in three years in 2016, as slack demand for gadgets undercuts prices of memory chips and displays that helped to offset declining mobile profits last year.
The semiconductor division was a top earner for the sixth straight quarter in the October-December period, lifting its operating profit to 2.80 trillion won from 2.70 trillion won a year earlier.

More than 1.43 billion smartphones sold

http://www.fudzilla.com/media/k2/items/cache/13ff8dcfbe96dd8093dbff51cc27530c_L.jpg (http://www.fudzilla.com/media/k2/items/cache/13ff8dcfbe96dd8093dbff51cc27530c_XL.jpg)

Samsung is still number one

Beancounters at IDC have added up the numbers and divided by their shoe size and reached the conclusion that smartphone shipments hit a record 1.43 billion units in 2015.

This is a 10.1 percent increase from 2014. To make matters even better in Q4 2015, shipments totalled 399.5 million units, an increase of 5.7 percent from the same period a year ago.
This will be news to Apple which saw its sales flatten. Samsung retained its spot as the number one manufacturer, and Huawei recorded shipments of 106.6 million, netting a year-on-year growth of 44.1 percent. Apple came second but a long way behind Samsung.
In the fourth quarter of 2015, Samsung shipped 85.6 million smartphones, with a 21.4 percent market share and 14 percent year on year growth.
Among Android manufacturers, Huawei came second with 32.4 million shipments and an 8.1 percent market share, a year on year growth of 37 percent.
Lenovo accounted for 202 million shipments, a massive increase of 43.6 percent from Q4 2014. Xiaomi shipped 18.2 million devices.

Samsung wins $120 million Apple patent dispute case following appeal

Apple and Samsung have been battling it out over mobile technology patents for years now, with Apple winning more often than not. Today marks a victory for Samsung, who recently appealed a ruling that would've seen it pay $120 million for infringing on Apple's quick links (the functionality that allows one to make phone calls from numbers seen on screen, among other things), slide-to-unlock, and auto-correct patents.

http://imagescdn.tweaktown.com/news/5/0/50711_1_samsung-wins-120-million-apple-patent-dispute-case-following-appeal.jpg

The court ruled the quick links patent was not infringed upon, and that the latter two patents were invalid. More, Apple was found to infringe on a Samsung patent, although it's not clear which.

The decision was unanimous among three judges of the Federal Circuit, the country's top court specializing in patent cases. Nearly $99 million of the damages related to the quick links infringement.

Samsung expects big profit jump

http://www.fudzilla.com/media/k2/items/cache/a7469b5a70f78b8ae4bea9b263e2cac5_L.jpg (http://www.fudzilla.com/media/k2/items/cache/a7469b5a70f78b8ae4bea9b263e2cac5_XL.jpg)

S7 success even surprises Samsung

Samsung hinted that it is expecting a 10 percent jump in quarterly profit, thanks to early sales for its new Galaxy S7 smartphones.

The South Korean tech giant's estimate for first-quarter operating profit handily beat market forecasts and has boosted hopes that its struggling mobile business will post its first annual profit gain in three years, benefiting from an improved performance for mid-to-low tier devices and cost-cutting efforts.
Samsung said January-March operating profit was likely to be $5.7 billion, well above profit expected by Wall Street. The firm will release more details in late April.
Analysts had lifted forecasts for Samsung earnings since late March encouraged by reports of better-than-expected sales of its Galaxy S7 models, which boast an improved camera, waterproofing and microSD storage support. Samsung's mobile business was probably the top earner for the first time in seven quarters, analysts say.
All this is bad news for Apple. The only thing it has to take on the S7 is its iPhone SE which is a two year old design with a better chip. It is also out of the price range of the S7.
