T-Mobile To Fish In Windows 10 Mobile Waters With Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL

A few months ago, T-Mobile CEO John Legere pitched a fit over AT&T exclusivity (http://hothardware.com/news/t-mobile-ceo-john-legere-blasts-microsofts-bs-att-lumia-950-exclusive) for the Microsoft Lumia 950 (http://hothardware.com/tags/lumia-950) and Lumia 950 XL (http://hothardware.com/tags/lumia-950-xl) Windows 10 Mobile (http://hothardware.com/tags/windows-10-mobile) flagship smartphones. T-Mobile customers can still purchase both smartphones and use them on T-Mobile’s network, but they have to purchase them off-contract at full price direct from Microsoft to do so. They can’t be purchased using T-Mobile’s financed installment plans. But despite the fact that Microsoft seems to be making a big mistake by limiting its flagship smartphones to AT&T (http://hothardware.com/news/microsoft-lumia-950-windows-10-mobile-flagship-arrives-as-att-exclusive-november-20th), T-Mobile hasn’t given up entirely on Windows 10 Mobile. Unfortunately, T-Mobile’s first foray into Windows 10 Mobile won’t be a high-end device. Instead, we’re looking at an entry-level smartphone from Alcatel.
The Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL is not exactly what we’d call a desirable device and might have trouble standing out in a field that is dominated by affordable and feature-packed Android devices. The OneTouch Fierce XL is a snoozer when it comes to specs, offering a Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 (http://hothardware.com/tags/snapdragon-210) processor with 2GB of RAM, 5.5-inch 720p display, 16GB of internal storage, microSD slot, 8MP rear camera and 2MP front-facing camera. Unfortunately, unlike most Lumia smartphones, the OneTouch Fierce XL will come with a non-removable 2500mAh battery.

Given the low-end specs, don’t expect to see Continuum (http://hothardware.com/tags/continuum) support on the OneTouch Fierce XL. Continuum requires rather stout hardware (Snapdragon 808 and Snapdragon 810 v2.1 in the case of the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL respectively) to enable support for desktop class apps when hooked up with a Microsoft Display Dock (http://hothardware.com/news/microsoft-display-dock-for-lumia-950-950-xl-windows-10-mobile-flagships-to-cost-99), external monitor, mouse and keyboard.
As for pricing, it’s reported that OneTouch Fierce XL will be priced below $100 and will make it debut at CES 2016. A sub-$100 price tag is a far cry from the $549/$649 price tag of the Lumia 950/Lumia 950 XL and seems to be par for the course from previous budget-minded Lumia smartphones.

Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL Windows 10 Mobile Handset Hits T-Mobile This Month

As we closed out 2015, we brought you news that T-Mobile was willing to give Windows 10 Mobile a chance (http://hothardware.com/news/t-mobile-to-fish-in-windows-10-mobile-waters-with-alcatel-onetouch-fierce-xl) even though Microsoft didn’t extend an olive branch (http://hothardware.com/news/microsoft-lumia-950-windows-10-mobile-flagship-arrives-as-att-exclusive-november-20th) by offering it the Lumia 950 (http://hothardware.com/tags/lumia-950) and Lumia 950 XL (http://hothardware.com/tags/lumia-950-xl) flagships. Unfortunately for those hoping that T-Mobile (http://hothardware.com/tags/t-mobile) would bring a flagship-class Windows 10 Mobile smartphone to the table, the third-place wireless carrier is instead going with a budget device from Alcatel.

As we reported last week, the OneTouch Fierce XL likely won’t win over any T-Mobile customers that had their hearts set on a Lumia 950, but its off-contract pricing is likely to be very compelling (the Android (http://hothardware.com/tags/android) version of the smartphone is available on MetroPCS for $70 after rebate). The specs are as follows:

Quad-core 1.1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 processor with 2GB RAM
16GB onboard storage
microSD expansion up to 32GB
5.5-inch 720p display
8MP rear camera with autofocus
2MP front-facing camera
2500mAh battery (12hrs talk time / 820hrs standby time)
4G LTE connectivity
VoLTE support
T-Mobile Wi-Fi calling support

“We strive to provide our customers a wide selection of price points, operating systems and capabilities when it comes to choosing a smartphone, so adding the Fierce XL to our hardware line-up was a no-brainer,” said T-Mobile Marketing VP Roger Brown. “This will be our first Windows 10 device to hit T-Mobile stores nationwide, and since the Fierce XL is coming from Alcatel, our customers know the build quality and feature set will be top notch.”
T-Mobile hasn’t announced pricing yet for the Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL, but we should know something “in the coming weeks” when the smartphone is released. However, we can’t imagine that the device will be priced that far from its previously mentioned Android counterpart.

Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL Entry-Level Windows 10 Mobile Smartphone Hits T-Mobile For $140

We were under the impression that the Alcatel’s latest foray into the Windows 10 Mobile (http://hothardware.com/tags/windows-10-mobile) market would arrive last month (http://hothardware.com/news/alcatel-onetouch-fierce-xl-windows-10-mobile-handset-hits-t-mobile-this-month), but it simply wasn’t meant to be. Thankfully, those that were looking forward to the budget smartphone didn’t have long to wait — the OneTouch Fierce XL (http://hothardware.com/tags/onetouch-fierce-xl) is now available direct from T-Mobile.

The OneTouch Fierce XL is unlikely to get your pulse racing if you’re into fast, feature-packed smartphones. Alcatel’s Windows 10 Mobile is strictly for the low-end of the smartphone market as witnessed by the following specs:

1.1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 with 2GB RAM
16GB onboard storage
microSD expansion up to 32GB
5.5-inch 720p display
8MP rear camera
2MP selfie camera
2500mAh battery
4G LTE connectivity
VoLTE support
T-Mobile Wi-Fi calling support

Those are some pretty yawn-tactic specs, but it at least gives Microsoft another vector when it comes to getting Windows 10 Mobile into the hands of customers that don’t want to break the bank on a smartphone. As for pricing, the OneTouch Fierce XL is available with no strings attached for $139.99. However, if you can’t swing $140 upfront, you can choose installment plan and pay $5.84/month for 24 months with $0 down.
On the other hand, we have the feeling that the $140 price tag will give way sooner rather than later -- the Android version of the OneTouch Fierce XL is available via metroPCS for $129 minus a $70 mail-in-rebate (https://www.metropcs.com/phones/details/alcatel-onetouch-fierce-xl/610214643353.html).
Alcatel isn’t the only company to show love for Windows 10 Mobile in recent weeks. VAIO announced its Phone Biz (http://hothardware.com/news/vaio-phone-biz-is-a-surprisingly-handsome-and-aluminum-clad-windows-10-mobile-smartphone), which will be available in Japan for around $400 in April. However, VAIO representatives

confirmed this week that the handsome, aluminum-bodied smartphone won’t be making it to U.S. shores:
