Windows PC and Windows mobile app stores merge

Microsoft is all about unifying devices as of late, and that continues today with its merging of the Windows PC and Windows mobile stores.

Now if you search for apps in the Windows Store on your PC, mobile-only apps like Instagram and PayPal will show up, too. For the time being, they come with a disclaimer that reads "This app will not work on your device", but you can expect PC support eventually, at which time the disclaimer should be removed.

In any case, this represents an important step in Microsoft's goal of unifying its operating system and devices.

Microsoft Updates Phone App for Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile

Microsoft has released a new update to the Phone app for Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile. This Universal Phone app for Windows 10 pushes the version up to 2.12.2002.0 which appears to be a major jump from the previous 1.10.23004.0.

Universal Phone app for Windows 10 gets an update:

The new update brings back the Call Duration feature to the Phone app. Long press on a call in the history and you will see the Call Duration under Details. Users have also reported that when dialing voicemail from a dual-SIM phone, the Phone app no longer asks you to choose which SIM to make the call from. As usual, there is no changelog to confirm what new features or enhancements have been included in the new update.

Microsoft’s universal Phone app for Windows 10 desktop and Mobile enables you to:

    • Make voice and video calls over your cellular network or Wi-Fi.
    • See your Skype call history on your Windows 10 desktop or mobile device.
    • You can also record your phone calls after all the parties on call give the permission for it. Cellular, Voice over LTE, WiFi – all calls can be recorded for playback.
    • Universal Phone app also lets you listen to your voicemail and manage messages from within the Phone app without having to call your voicemail.
    • Easily block unwanted numbers from within the call history.

Except for the Call Duration, there don’t seem to be any other major changes in the new update released for the Phone app. There are no design changes made to the app either. Let us know if you discovered something new in the updated Windows 10 Phone app.

The WordPress.com desktop app for Windows is here

Bloggers take note. Automattic just released a WordPress.com desktop app for Windows. In a company blog post, they promise the app is “simple, seamless, and blazingly fast.” Back in November, Automattic released a revamp of their web interface along with a desktop app for Mac and said that Windows and Linux counterparts would be coming soon. And really, it shouldn’t just be bloggers paying attention to this since WordPress accounts for up to a quarter of the Web.
The app functions like the website but gives the option of working straight from your desktop. You can manage multiple sites, publish posts, customize the appearance, and keep track of stats. The app is for WordPress.com sites as well as self-hosted WordPress sites (as long as you have the Jetpack plugin up and running.)
Here’s a full list of what the app includes:

    • The My Sites dashboard for managing multiple sites, whether WordPress.com or self-hosted WordPress with Jetpack.
    • The new WordPress.com Editor, with in-app previewing and draft auto-saving.
    • The Reader, which lets you follow and read any of your favorite sites, and the all-new Discover, which recommends outstanding content from across all of WordPress.
    • Insights and Stats, which show you exactly how your site and posts are performing.
    • In-app notifications, so you can see comments, likes, and new follows all in one place.

The app is free to download here.

Microsoft Investigating the Windows Store Issue as Users Fail to Launch It

Windows 10 users are reporting an issue where they have been unable to launch Windows Store on their devices. Microsoft has acknowledged the issue and is currently looking for “diagnostic information to isolate the root cause of the issue.”

Microsoft is working to fix Windows Store issue:

Microsoft has acknowledged the Windows Store issue, confirming that users are getting a blank screen when loading the apps, or in other cases are completely unable to launch the Store. Due to this Windows Store access issue, users are unable to download any new apps. Furthermore, they can’t update the existing apps too making the incoming updates, which seem to be plenty, completely useless for Windows 10 users. Considering the impact, the company has promised to send a patch to fix Windows Store issue.
Recently, it has come to our attention that a number of users are experiencing issues launching the Store or the Store launches to a blank screen. We are actively investigating the issue, but we’ll need more diagnostic information to isolate the root cause of the issue. One way you can help us is by sending in diagnostic information and other feedback to our Windows Store engineering team, so we better understand some of the issues users are encountering in the field.
    Advertisements

Since there is nothing users can do at the moment, Microsoft is advising users to provide information on the issue they are receiving on their Windows 10 devices to help the company with identifying and then fixing the problem. Microsoft wants “you to collect logs from your computer or device using the WSCollect.exe tool,” and send it to the company:

    • To run WSCollect.exe, open an elevated command prompt. This will create a CAB file and save it to the desktop.
    • Attach the CAB file to the email, and send it with the details below to Win10Store at Microsoft dot com.

If you are experiencing this issue too and want to help Microsoft fix Windows Store access problems, click here to find out more about how to report the issue and what details to include.

Windows Store Has Terrible Support for Games & Microsoft Needs To Fix It

Microsoft is finally pushing AAA games on its Windows Store. Rise of the Tomb Raider, released just a couple of weeks ago, is just the first one in a list that will certainly grow over time as Microsoft is trying to build a solid competitor to Valve’s Steam, as complicated as that may be.
More competition in any market is always good for customers. However, right now the games published on Windows Store have so many issues that gamers are already being scared off the platform.
Let’s take Rise of the Tomb Raider as an example. The Windows Store version of the game is an app built with the Universal Windows Platform, an app architecture first introduced with Windows 10. The main goal of the UWP (designed as an extension of Windows Runtime) is to allow developers to create applications that can run on multiple devices such as PC, phones, tablets or even Xbox One; this obviously fits Microsoft’s overall strategy about a larger, interconnected Windows ecosystem.
The big problem is that UWP apps have severe limitations right now when it comes to gaming. For instance, there is no way to enable Exclusive Fullscreen mode as Borderless Fullscreen is enforced. While the latter mode is useful to go back easily to Windows via Alt-Tab, it should be an option (just like in every PC game) rather than an obligation, mostly because it brings certain disadvantages.

Borderless Fullscreen mode generally brings a slight performance loss, for starters, and more importantly it enforces V-Sync; Nixxes, the studio responsible for the PC version of Rise of the Tomb Raider, confirmed that there is currently no way to prevent this in the UWP framework.
Enforcing V-Sync brings another share of issues to the table. Again, this should be an option rather than an obligation as in any PC game; V-Sync introduces input lag, as most of you already know, and there are better options nowadays to prevent tearing. For instance, NVIDIA’s GSYNC cannot be enabled as long as V-Sync is enforced, and people have paid a significant premium when they bought their displays specifically to use GSYNC.
    Advertisements

There’s more, anyway. NVIDIA SLI & AMD CrossFire aren’t supported, much to the dismay of those of you who own multiple discrete GPUs; there is no compatibility with several overlay programs either, such as Afterburner, FRAPS and even the popular post-processing injector ReShade. Finally, downloads are inexplicably slow and even patches are being rolled with a substantial delay (maybe Microsoft is running them through some kind of certification, though this is just a guess).
It’s important to note that the blame rests squarely on Microsoft and the limitations imposed by the UWP framework. In fact, the Steam version of Rise of the Tomb Raider suffers from none of the aforementioned issues.
While PC gamers can just choose to get the latest adventure of Lara Croft on Valve’s Steam, this will not be possible for Quantum Break (recently confirmed to be launching on PC as well on April 5): Aaron Greenberg, Head of Marketing at Xbox, confirmed during the latest Major Nelson podcast that Quantum Break will be a Windows Store exclusive.

Clearly, Microsoft intends for Quantum Break to be a killer application for Windows 10 and its Store. I don’t blame them for doing so at all, it’s only sound business sense. However, they do need to fix the issues listed in this article if they want to be taken seriously in their effort of regaining the trust of PC gamers.
They are evidently getting serious about supporting PC gaming in terms of lineup, with ReCore, Fable Legends, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, Quantum Break, Halo Wars 2, Killer Instinct and Sea of Thieves all scheduled to release this year. Throwing all of that away because of a lousy development platform would be naive of them and disappointing for us.
Besides, it would be a true shame for those who own a 4K display not to be able to witness Quantum Break (the first DX12 only game) at its best graphics quality with smooth gameplay, and we’ll very much need technologies like GSYNC and SLI/CrossFire for that purpose.

Windows Store Games won't have VSync, SLI/CrossFire, Fullscreen or Modding

Microsoft is looking to cut itself a lion's share of the game digital downloads pie, by making Microsoft Store (which comes included with Windows 10), sell contemporary AAA games, such as "Rise of the Tomb Raider." Unlike other cross-DRM transactions (eg: purchasing a Steam DLC game through UPlay store), Microsoft Store will serve both sales and DRM roles. You must be thinking "it's a free world, always room for more competition," right? Think again. There are several pitfallls to buying "Rise of the Tomb Raider" or any other AAA game through Microsoft Store, as users on Reddit found out.

To begin with, games purchased through Windows Store are built on Microsoft's Universal Apps Platform, and not the conventional desktop-based executable. The game is essentially a "modern UI" app, and not a conventional Windows application. This has great limitations - no NVIDIA SLI or AMD CrossFire support; no real fullscreen mode (just borderless windowed mode or pseudo-fullscreen); and V-sync being always-on. Other major downsides of UAP apps include no support for modding, and mouse macros. What's more, since UAP apps don't have *.exe extensions, you can't add them to Steam, and so no Steam Controller support. The Store in itself doesn't have a good refund policy along the lines of Steam and Origin limited full-refund policies; and you'll never be able to play your games on Windows versions older than Windows 10.

Microsoft Promises to Fix Windows Store VSync Lock

Microsoft’s relationship with the PC gaming audience has been fairly turbulent due to the advent of Games for Windows Live and focus on console development. Many users are still haunted by Microsoft’s atrocious form of DRM, which resulted in lost saves, regional restrictions and a very basic accounts system. Furthermore, they never really showed any interest in the PC platform, and didn’t support it when there were concerns about its future. Thankfully, Valve stepped in and catapulted the popularity of PC games. There’s a certain irony though because Microsoft could be in Valve’s position if they catered to the PC community properly.
Thankfully, times have changed and Microsoft is adopting a more unified approach to mobile, PC and console. This means, the company is open to cross-platform releases and giving the PC key franchises which remained a console exclusive for some time. Admittedly, there’s still no Halo or Forza on the PC platform, but I cannot see an announcement being too far off. Instead of releasing their own games on Steam, Microsoft is pushing the Windows Store and trying to encourage people to upgrade to Windows 10. This makes sense because Valve takes a significant portion of a game’s revenue, simply for allowing a game to be sold on their service.
Sadly, the Windows Store has some major issues and Microsoft has to address them to even consider making PC gamers part with their hard-earned money. For example, a post on Reddit suggests there’s no SLI/Crossfire support, no modding support, no refund policy, and VSync is always on! Not only that, the game files are protected, monitoring software doesn’t work properly, and borderless full screen is your only option. Clearly, these are some very severe restrictions and concerning given Microsoft’s history with DRM.
Mike Ybarra, Partner Director of Program Management, Xbox and Windows Platform at Microsoft addressed some of these concerns and said:

@darkhand12345 SLI and Crossfire work, games just need to support it just as always. We will fix vsync.

Apparently, SLI/Crossfire is already functional, and depends on the developer. However, I encountered some problems with dual card setups on Rise of the Tomb Raider but only with the Windows Store version. I’m pleased to see the news that VSync will become optional because many people dislike the stutter it creates or use a G-Sync panel instead. Only time will tell if Microsoft creates an open PC platform, but it’s clear that the current store needs a lot of work.

Microsoft Promises To Fix UWA Gaming Issues Like mGPU Support, VSync & Modding

With Microsoft’s renewed focus on PC (more specifically, Windows 10) support for games, another set of issues recently arose: the Universal Windows App platform has several limitations right now, such as the lack of mGPU (multiGPU, AKA SLI or CrossFire) support, the lack of Exclusive Fullscreen mode and forced VSYNC.
This sparked widespread concern for the upcoming WIndows Store exclusive games, starting with Gears of War: Ultimate Edition that stealthily launched today with the exact same set of problems experienced with Rise of the Tomb Raider.
However, Microsoft at least acknowledged the overwhelming feedback. Mike Ybarra, Director of Program Management for the Xbox Platform, mentioned two days ago in a tweet that the VSYNC issue will be fixed.

Microsoft’s Head of Xbox Division Phil Spencer was even more specific today in an interview with PC Gamer. He said that their goal is to make the Universal Windows Platform the best platform for game developers and gamers to support, and that certainly includes addressing all those issues.
Yeah, well, we obviously have the same list, and maybe even a little longer than what the community has brought up around Rise of the Tomb Raider. Certain things will happen very quickly in terms of, like, mGPU support and stuff where there’s no policy, it’s just us working through the timeline of implementation. VSync lock, kind of the same thing. There’s specific reasons that it’s there, but it’s not something that’s kind of a religion on our side that this has to work. Modding, we’re focused on modding even on console with, like, Fallout. We obviously own Minecraft, we understand the importance of modding, and making sure that we support that in the PC ecosystem is critical to UWA success. Our goal is to make UWP [Universal Windows Platform] the best platform for game developers and gamers to support, but we know we’ve got room to grow.
With Tomb Raider coming out, I think for most people that just want to go play a great game the UWA version doesn’t keep them from playing a great game.
That’s not to downplay the feature list that people have sent us. I understand the need to react and to fit in in the PC gaming community with the tools that they rightfully want at their disposal. It’s in our tracking system, stuff that we’re going to get done, and we have a real path to get it done. The reason I wanted to articulate those issues and deficiencies is so that people recognise I’m not trying to say they’re not important. I’m not trying to say that, ‘oh, 90% of the people don’t even know what mGPU means so go away.’ I’m saying, ‘no, these are features we know we need to support that we know they’re not there today but we are committed to supporting in the future.’ Because I don’t want people to look at this as a passing fancy on our part of, ‘can we just quickly port some console games over to PC and hope to make a little bit of money?’ It’s not all about that. We are the Windows company, and ensuring that the Windows gaming ecosystem is strong is important, and that means supporting these features.
Microsoft is certainly going to great lengths in order to prove PC gamers that it’s not messing around in terms of line-up. Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is out today, Killer Instinct is coming on March 29 and, after countless rumors, Forza Motorsport is coming to Windows 10 this Spring with the free-to-play Apex version.
However, these issues within the Universal Windows App environment need to be fixed as soon as possible as we already pointed out a few days ago. Microsoft already lost the trust of PC consumers once with the Games for Windows Live debacle, it just cannot afford a repeat this time around.

    Boa noite,

Habemos Facebook Messenger na Windows Store! Depois de Facebook e Instagram lançarem as suas aplicações universais, agora é a vez do Facebook Messenger. Cada vez mais e mais a Universal Windows Platform está mais bem composta! Aqui ficam as imagens, just for you.

Today, however, leaked images captured by WindowsBlogItalia give us our first glimpse of what a Facebook Messenger app on Windows 10 might look like. According to the site’s description, the app will contain the following features:

    • Get notifications so you never miss a message
    • See when you have messages waiting for you with a live tile
    • Send photos, videos, GIFs and more
    • Bring your conversations to life with stickers
    • Know when people have seen your messages
    • Create groups for the people you message most—name them and set group photos
    • Forward messages or photos to people who weren’t in the conversation
    • Search for people and groups to quickly get back to them

The layout of the app based on the leaked images are in line with both Microsoft’s Windows 10 app design as well as what Facebook is doing with its main app for Windows 10 in its beta development. As to when users will get a chance to try out the app remains a mystery–there have been no open calls or emails for a beta sign up, but many are speculating that Microsoft’s upcoming developer conference could be a great stage to showcase finally the movement Windows 10 is making in courting big name development.

Parece-me que temos aqui mais uma prova sobre o nascimento de uma plataforma digital próspera. E a vocês?

    Cumprimentos.

Twitter for Windows 10 launches on mobile, dark mode comes to desktop

That new Twitter for Windows 10 design that launched last year for PCs and tablets is now available for mobile devices too as of today.

With it, you can try out 'Moments' (essentially a 'best of Twitter' feature), group DMs, Tweet video support (including capturing and editing), easier tweet quoting, and more. To grab it, head to the Windows Store.

And for desktop and tablet users, there's a new treat for you, too: a dark mode theme. To access it, navigate to Settings > Personalization.

Windows 10 Maps app receives major enhancements to search

Windows 10 Insiders get the benefit of some major enhancements to the Maps app today, namely to search, but also navigation and interface, among other areas.

For search, there's the new ability to conduct and view multiple searches simultaneously (e.g. see nearby hotels and restaurants at the same time, or see multiple directions at the same time), with the option to view them separately if need be. Algorithms are improved, too, which closer and better results.

Regarding the interface and navigation, navigation buttons are now at the top of the app on desktop and at the bottom on mobile, making everything more intuitive whatever device you're on; labels are now found directly on the map; elements can be hidden or shown at will; public transit routes are easier to follow with more precise instructions and an improved design, and Cortana will give you instructions when enabled.

In short, an already great app gets greater with some neat features and appreciable enhancements. For those wondering if their mobile device is supported by this build, head here.

    Boa tarde,

Microsoft reverses course, will launch Skype UWP app for Windows 10 PC and Mobile

In a change of strategy, Microsoft will release a Skype app for the Universal Windows Platform after all. The company says that the app will be released first for Windows 10 on PCs and tablets, followed by a Windows 10 Mobile version.
Microsoft previously announced that a UWP version of Skype would not be released. Instead, the company decided to integrate Skype features into its Windows 10 Video and Messaging apps. A "preview" of that experience was released for Windows 10 on PCs in November.

Microsoft said it has been taking feedback from Windows 10 users since then:
But what we also learned from this feedback is that as the screen size gets bigger—large tablets, 2 in 1s and PCs for example— and you begin to use the apps, expectations shift and people want to limit app clutter. And like that, you once again want an app that lets you do anything you want within the comfort of one window. This is why we are introducing the Skype Universal Windows Platform app. We wanted to learn from integration and improve on the current Skype app with new experiences. We've simplified the look and feel by removing duplicative and unnecessary menus to prevent confusion between them. The global menus are now in a new, single Settings menu, and you'll see contextual menus appear in upcoming releases.
Members of the Windows Insider program will get the first chance to check out the Skype UWP app for Windows 10 on PCs and tablets in the coming weeks. The first version will include these features:

    • Sign in with your Microsoft Account and link a Skype ID
    • Show and change your availability
    • See a list of your existing Skype contacts
    • Initiate a chat with anyone in your contact list
    • See that the other person is typing
    • Logout
    • Make one-to-one voice and video calls and send messages
    • Personalize your experience with emoticons and Mojis
    • Send photos
    • See notifications for incoming calls and messages outside of the app
    • Participate in existing group chats
Future versions will add more features:

    • Start a chat with anyone using Skype or not using Skype
    • Create a group and send group messages
    • Group voice and video calling
    • Share your screen, files and video messages
    • Manage notifications from individual chats
    • And much more…
The current version of Skype can still be used on Windows 10 PCs, but Microsoft does plans to "streamline all Skype for Windows 10 experiences into the Skype Universal Windows Platform app" over time in various stages.

    Link - http://www.windowscentral.com/skype-...d-mobile-works

Basicamente agora vão lançar a versão definitiva (espero eu).

    Cumprimentos.
