Star Citizen Creator Says Space Sims Are “Finally Getting the Love They Deserve”

    Made with Flare More Info'>
Chris Roberts, the creator behind Star Citizen, is one humble fellow. He has come out talking about the launch of Elite: Dangerous, where he gave a big congratulations to the team on the launch of their game earlier this week. He added that space sims are “finally getting the love they deserve.”
Roberts wrote “I know that many Star Citizen backers imagine there to be an intense competition between our game and Elite. Nothing could be further from the truth. David and I promoted each other’s projects during our respective crowd funding periods because we both believe that the world is better off with more PC games and even better off with more space games.”
He even talked about No Man’s Sky, referring to both it and Elite as breathing new life into the space genre. He added “In the nineties there was plenty of room for multiple space sims and there is no reason that still can’t be the case now! I’ve always maintained that we aren’t a success if we just make a game; part of the reason that I came back from film was to build a game in a genre I loved and hopefully remind people how amazing it is to lose yourself in another universe, adventuring amongst the stars. So rather than be worried about Elite or No Man’s Sky, I welcome them. It’s been a long time coming, but space sims are finally getting the love they deserve.”

Star Citizen Arena Commander v1.0 and new trailer released

A new trailer for the multi-million dollar crowdfunded space sim, Star Citizen, has been unveiled by developer Cloud Imperium Games, showing off many of the game's gorgeous settings in a video entitled 'Imagine'. The trailer shows a collection of previously seen footage of the game, combined to create a three minute long retrospective.
As you may well know, the game is still in development, and is not expected to resemble its finished state until around the end of 2016. Players are asked to contribute by providing feedback on the official website and by adding to the game's funding as they purchase in-game content and merchandise.
In addition to the new trailer, Chris Roberts penned a blog post to announce the release of one of the game's six key modules, Arena Commander, which will hit version 1.0 at the weekend. This latest version of the space game's dogfighting module brings fans yet another step closer towards seeing Star Citizen finally becoming a full game, as it's currently the only way to fly around in the game's beautiful spaceships. Touted as the "most significant update to Arena Commander yet", the release adds more ships and upgrades, enhancements to ship systems and the long-awaited lobby system to the game.

The dogfight simulator module allows players to battle computer-controller ships and other players to let them get used to their ships in Free Flight mode. Version 1.0 triples the number of ships ready to fly in Arena Commander, with every variant of the Aurora, Mustang, 4300 and Hornet and the base models of the Cutlass and the Avenger now flyable.
The lobby, alongside an in-game friends system, should be a nice addition to help players connect. A ship signature system, a thruster power system and a lateral g-force system are also part of the update whilst the visuals, animations and audio effects are said to have been improved by the team as well.

However, even with all the updates, version 1.0 is still not the feature-final version of Arena Commander. Further gameplay modules and updates are expected to be released throughout 2015 and 2016. "I would like to stress that today’s release of Arena Commander 1.0 is a beginning, not an ending… future changes won’t be limited to fixing technical glitches and balance issues," Roberts assured in his blog post.

Infelizmente a v1.0.0 está com diversos bugs, especialmente de conexão ao entrar e com alguns crashes... além de me demorar uma eternidade a carregar as cenas na memória.

Star Citizen cheers on Elite: Dangerous

Star Citizen’s creator Chris Roberts has officially congratulated Elite: Dangerous on its successful launch on the Star Citizen website.

Writing on Roberts Space Industries, Roberts says how he has been a supporter of the Elite crowd funding project from the beginning and is delighted to see it launched.

’I know that many Star Citizen backers imagine there to be an intense competition between our game and Elite, but nothing could be further from the truth,’ said Roberts. ’The world is better off with more PC games and even better off with more space games. In the nineties there was plenty of room for multiple Space Sims and there is no reason that still can't be the case now!'

During the funding periods for both Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous, both Roberts and Elite developer David Braben promoted each others projects. Roberts also points out that he feels that Elite and Star Citizen are both taking sufficiently different approaches to the genre to be considered as unique projects.

Elite: Dangerous slipped the surly bonds of beta on December 16 this month and has launched to an encouraging critical reception. Prior to this, the sprawling open-universe space dsim had spend approximately one year in beta which was open to backers of the crowd funding project or anyone who wanted to buy in.

Star Citizen to begin collecting VAT on purchases

Cloud Imperium Games, the company behind crowd-funding success story Star Citizen, has warned that users located within the European Union will find prices rising next month as the company begins to collect value added tax (VAT) on sales.

The creation of Chris Roberts, best known for leading the development of the Wing Commander space opera series, Star Citizen launched its crowd-funding campaign back in 2012. Since then, the project has broken every record to raise almost $70 million at the time of writing from more than 730,000 individual backers.

A chunk of those backers, however, will find future investment in the game a pricier move thanks to a shift in the way its parent company operates. At present, the game is managed by US-based Cloud Imperium Games, co-founded by Roberts specifically for the project. From the 1st of February, a European arm dubbed Roberts Space Industries International will take over control of the game's publishing - and being based in the UK will have to adhere to European VAT collection laws.

'Starting on February 1st, we will be required to charge VAT on all purchases (including digital goods) made through the Roberts Space Industries International website,' the company explained in its announcement this week. 'This means that in the coming days, the effective rate for European backers will go up depending on the VAT rate of their home country. We know that European backers are familiar with VAT, and likely have already encountered these charges on goods purchased elsewhere online. We wish there were an alternative to charging the tax, but also believe that it is in our best interest to expand Star Citizen’s footprint to a part of the world that has proven to be truly passionate about space games!'

The company has advised users currently sitting on the fence regarding purchases of new ships or investment in the game in general to do so prior to the new company going live in February in order to save themselves the VAT charges. It has also promised to send a selection of limited-edition ships whose purchaseable periods had expired live again on the 26th of February as a bonus ahead of the shift.
