Google extends Windows XP support for Chrome

Although Microsoft has officially ended support for Windows XP, after years of delays and absolute-last-extensions, Google has announced that it will continue to support the platform with its Chrome browser - at least until the end of the year.

Back in 2013, advertising giant and EC antitrust target Google announced that it would continue to support its Chrome browser build for Windows XP until at least April 2015 - a year after Microsoft pulled the plug on the operating system's long-running life-support machine. Now, April 2015 is here - and Google has decided to offer users still on the OS-that-would-not-die a further extension.

'We know that not everyone can easily switch to a newer operating system. Millions of people are still working on XP computers every day. We want those people to have the option to use a browser that’s up-to-date and as safe as possible on an unsupported operating system,' explained Mark Larson, director of engineering for Google's Chrome division, in the extension announcement. 'We previously announced that we’d keep supporting Chrome on Windows XP through ‘at least’ April 2015. It’s April 2015 now, and we’re extending that commitment. We will continue to provide regular updates and security patches to Chrome on XP through the end of 2015.'

This may, however prove Chrome for Windows XP's last hurrah: while Google's previous commitment included an 'at least' proviso, Larson's deadline has no such wiggle room - meaning that anyone still running Windows XP at the end of the year will find their Chrome version stagnating.

Japan's nuclear industry reveals XP addiction

    What could possibly go wrong?

Japan's nuclear industry, which has not been particularly lucky in recent years, might be suffering from a bad case of addiction to Windows XP.

You would expect cutting edge technology would be controlled by the latest computers, with software which could handle anything which you can chuck at it.
However the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), operator of the Stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear energy complex, has been told off by accountants for being entirely dependent on Windows XP.
Japan's Board of Audit, an organisation that oversees the finances of Japan's government and government agencies has told EPCO to migrate 48,000 internet-connected PCs off Windows XP pronto.
TEPCO has been moaning that it can't afford the cost of cleaning up its last melt-down and the audit released in late March was supposed to show how it could reach a state in which it can pay its dues.
TEPCO thought a good way to save money operates would be to defer upgrading its ancient PCs and operating systems until 2019.
However the Board of Audit said the upgrade needs to go to the top of TEPCO's to-do list, on the grounds.
After all the operating system's insecurity makes it a target for hackers who want to own a nuclear power station or two. But hell who would have thought of that.

IRS still using Windows XP, and has more than 300 cybersecurity staff

The IRS recently suffered a data breach that left thousands of Americans at risk, and more attention is now focused on government mismanaged. Utilizing a $10.9 billion budget, either the agency is greatly mismanaged and/or the IRS just isn't ready to try to protect taxpayer information.

There seems to be a lot of problems with the IRS, and that has certainly trickled down to its cybersecurity protocols. The agency still uses Microsoft Windows XP - and while the IRS originally paid Microsoft for support - that support has ended. To make matters worse, some fraud identification software is almost 20 years old.

The IRS previously had 410 cybersecurity team personnel, but that has been slashed down to 363 workers. The idea that IRS personnel are unable to keep up with identity theft is a huge problem, especially as cybercriminals get cleverer.

Microsoft getting paid millions to support Windows XP for US Navy

The US Navy was unable to upgrade from Windows XP before Microsoft pulled the plug on support, and will pay at least $9 million for additional help. Specifically, the Navy will receive critical hotfixes and additional software patches for Windows XP and other software.

The deal is expected to run until July 2016, though both sides agreed to the possibility of support until June 2017 - and would cost over $30 million. Without going into details, the Navy has "legacy applications" that must run on Windows XP - and it is taking longer than expected to make upgrades and improvements.

"Nearly all the networks and workstations afloat and ashore will benefit from the Microsoft Premier Support services and Microsoft Custom Support services for Windows XP, Office 2003, Exchange 2003 and Server 2003,"said Steven Davis, spokesman for Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command, in a statement published by ZDNET.

The agreement between the Navy and Microsoft will allow the military to "maintain enterprise-wide Microsoft capabilities to ensure Navy warfighters have connectivity to their respective networks and to the data necessary to support and accomplish their mission."

    Boa tarde,

    Cumprimentos.

UK’s doomsday subs rely on Windows XP

40 nuclear warheads under the control of ancient OS

While most of the world would be insane to rely on Windows XP to provide them with security, the UKs 40 nuclear weapons are dependent on the ancient OS.

Britain four missile submarines, HMS Vanguard, Victorious, Vigilant, and Vengeance were commissioned in the 1990s. According to The Guardian, Windows XP was installed because it was "cheaper than alternatives."
But when Redmond ended security updates for Windows XP in 2014 the Vanguard submarines could be vulnerable to viruses, malware, and cyberattacks. To be fair the Brits are not the only ones to be vulnerable to cyber-attack.
The US Navy also still runs Windows XP, but it is paying for extra security and updates while it transitions to more modern operating systems.
The Guardian makes no mention of the Royal Navy cutting a similar deal, but it is likely – the UK's Ministry of Defence only insisting the submarines are "safe and secure."
Still it is a little worrying. It might be jolly difficult to hack one of these subs underwater but if they were in port, it might be a bit easier.

UK Nuclear Submarines Use Windows XP

Technology changes all the time, and operating systems are no different. From the era of DOS and punch cards to modern day touch screens and augmented reality, you can find every generation making their mark in a new way. With Windows 8 no longer receiving updates people are recommended to update to either 8.1 or Windows 10 to avoid security risks. The problem being, Nuclear Submarines use Windows XP still.
With the argument raging regarding if the UK still requires nuclear submarines, the large cost of which is a key part of the argument, cutting a few pounds here and there can only be good right? In a recent decision, the Royal Navy installed a variant of Windows XP (Windows for Submarines) onto their Vanguard-Class Submarines.
While operating in isolation and with so many years of updates and security investigations on the operating system, the Ministry of Defence is confident that the system will “remain safe and secure”. This comes amongst a series of wargames and exercises designed to help test and train people from across the world, all while concerns about submarines long term “stealth abilities” are being questioned due to the addition of swarms of drones and new systems being developed to counter them.
Networks are most at risk due to their access from external sources, and while cutting down on these is a great first step you will always be at risk. Using outdated software is risky, no matter how much support has been put into it but with more and more research and development being made into these systems you can be certain that anything they find will quickly be fixed.
