Half of All Active Windows Phones Could Upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile – 15.2% Already Have

Many of Windows fans were left heartbroken this past week when Microsoft confirmed that there will be no second wave of Windows 10 Mobile. All the devices that are part of the current list of supported devices are the only devices that will ever (we do expect reconsiderations for some devices) be upgraded to Windows 10. Company’s officials said that the decision has been made based on the feedback received from the Insiders.
“You are all gonna FREAK OUT” when you see the new Windows 10 features

Over 50% of all active Windows Phones are eligible for upgrade

Many thought that Microsoft is breaking its earlier promise of getting all the older devices to the new Windows 10 Mobile operating system. While the decision may come as a bad news to many, latest stats reveal that the situation is not that gloomy after all. New data from AdDuplex has shared several different aspects on the adoption rate of Windows 10 Mobile. It confirms that even after this decision of leaving several devices behind, over 50% of all the active Windows Phone devices could update to Windows 10 Mobile, at least in theory.
The numbers reveal that 15.2 percent of all the existing Windows Phone devices eligible for the upgrade, have already upgraded to the newly released operating system version. Over 35% of devices are capable of upgrading to Windows 10 Mobile, however, are yet to receive the update through their carriers.
The number of devices that is theoretically being left behind by Microsoft, comes at 49.6 percent of all the active Windows Phones. Remember, many of these devices have only 512MB of RAM or Qualcomm S7 chips, both of which are no longer supported by the latest OS after negative feedback received by the Insiders.

Compared to Android Marshmallow’s 2.3 percent install base and 79 percent adoption rate of iOS 9, Microsoft’s latest mobile operating system falls somewhere in between the two leading operating systems. Android has traditionally suffered the most thanks to a vast base of devices that are released every year, along with carrier and regional delays. Microsoft intended to follow a software update process that is more in line with Apple’s strategy.
    Advertisements

However, Windows 10 Mobile release made it clear that the upgrade process won’t be as easy and fast as iOS. The manufacturers and carriers still appear to have a say in the update process, as we received news that HTC is passing the current upgrade for its One M8 due to small install base.
We also have to consider the fact that the latest software upgrades from Apple have often been called out for deliberately slowing down the older devices. While Microsoft has made a tough decision to leave even some of the not-so-old devices behind, it is better for the users to experience an older, but stable firmware than a newer software update that significantly slows down the smartphone.
At the end, it all comes down to the company’s communication with its users. From words of delivering Windows 10 Mobile in December, 2015 and failing to do so for the next three months to bragging about releasing the new OS to all the Windows Phones, promises have been aplenty. Let’s hope the company learns its lessons from the latest release to say only what it can actually deliver.

For those who feel upset by Microsoft’s decision, you can experience the new operating system through Windows Insider Program. You will be able to test all the builds that the eligible devices will officially receive until the Redstone updates hit the devices, later in the year.

Upcoming Windows 10 Mobile Redstone to Bring New Ways to Handle Calls

A new feature has been discovered in the latest internal Windows 10 Mobile build, and it seems pretty exciting. An upcoming build of Windows 10 Mobile Redstone might bring additional ways to handle calls to the owners of Windows 10 Mobile devices.

Windows 10 Mobile Redstone to bring Call Audio Routing

A leaked internal build of Windows 10 Mobile reveals that an upcoming build of the newly released operating system might bring additional options of how a user wants to route their calls. Calls can be routed directly to a connected Bluetooth device or to the Phone speaker, allowing user to choose where they want their audio to play when they get a phone call.
Users will also be able to choose a new option to have the speaker phone automatically turn on when the phone is removed away from the ear. These additional call routing features might appeal to a small number of users who want to have the control of audio devices getting the calls. The second feature will be a helpful tool to move to the speaker phone without having to interrupt an ongoing conversation.
Windows 10 Mobile gets audio routing options in latest Redstone builds. Also it is now possible to turn the call on the speaker just by moving the phone from your ear.
    Advertisements

Could also be released as an app updated for phones running 10586 and Insiders later. mswin
The new functionality is being added to both the Windows 10 for PCs and Windows 10 Mobile. An upcoming test builds of Windows 10 coming to Insiders are expected to bring these call audio routing features.

Windows 10 Mobile Redstone 14291 Now Available for Older Lumia Phones

Microsoft has now started rolling out Windows 10 Mobile Redstone preview build 14291 to older Windows Phone devices. All the devices that are supported by the newly released operating system can now test the features of 14291, if they are part of the Windows Insider program and are on the Fast ring. Except for Lumia 635, if your device is in the list of supported devices, you can start trying out the new features coming from the Development Branch.
List of Supported Windows Phone Devices Eligible for Windows 10 Mobile Upgrade

Windows 10 Mobile 14291 out for older devices

Except for the Lumia 635, which will get the build at a later date, all the eligible devices can now get Windows 10 Mobile preview build 14291. Preview build 14291 is part of the Development Branch (aka Redstone), that brings improvements and new features to the operating system. While allthe Windows Phones can try out the preview builds, Microsoft had earlier said that only the supported devices will be able to install the preview builds coming from the Development Branch.
Going forward – these devices can receive new builds from our Development Branch that we release to the Fast and Slow rings. As we stated previously, only devices which are eligible to receive the Windows 10 Mobile upgrade will be able to get preview builds from the Development Branch.

As mentioned before, you will need to be on the Fast ring to see the update. Please note that this is a preview build that comes with its own fair share of errors and problems. Users aren’t advised to install the preview updates on their primary devices. Take Screenshot On Windows 10 Mobile – How To

Here’s how you can take a screenshot in Windows 10 Mobile using a simple key combination.

Windows 10 Mobile is Microsoft’s latest foray into the world of smartphones, with big hopes to lure people from the other side of the fence to hop onboard. Whether Microsoft manages to succeed in that remains to be seen as users have just finally gotten to acquaint themselves with Windows 10 Mobile. And as they keep on using the company’s mobile OS, they’ll get to learn quite a few things over a span of time. But today, we’re jumping into the arena of the very basic – showing our readers how to take a screenshot, something which everyone should know about.
How To Take A Screenshot On Windows 10 Mobile

On older Windows Phone devices, the key combination for taking a screenshot was the Power + Start buttons. But over time, Microsoft rejigged a few things and has (hopefully) landed on something which everyone will remember from here on in – Power + Volume Up buttons. That key combination will instantly snap a screenshot and save it directly into the Photos app under the ‘Screenshots’ folder. You will, of course, get a confirmation if you pressed the key combination right the first time. If you can’t get it right, then don’t worry, a little practice will turn you into a pro.

    Advertisements

If you try to take a screenshot using the old key combination of Power + Start, then it’s heartwarming to know that Microsoft has thrown in a prompt in Windows 10 Mobile making users aware that ‘something’s changed.’

Windows 10 Mobile has been off to a shaky start, with many users complaining of performance related issues and whatnot. Apart from the users themselves, I personally found Windows 10 Mobile to be a little disturbing when it comes to performance of third-party apps and very small things in general.
READ Access 'Field Test' Mode On iPhone - How To

We’re certain that Microsoft can address a lot of things with a few simple software updates in the days and months to come, but it remains to be seen whether these little issues will end up damaging the overall desirability of Redmond’s mobile OS. After all, the likes of iOS and Android are extremely zippy in terms of performance even on older hardware, hence we’re quite certain things shouldn’t be that difficult for Microsoft to manage.
But given Microsoft’s current direction of focussing more on its desktop platform, it seems likely that it will be a while till we see a buttery smooth version of Windows 10 Mobile.

Windows 10 Mobile isn't a focus for Microsoft in 2016

Microsoft has been improving many different areas of the Windows 10 experience recently, and the upcoming Anniversary Update will add even more new features, but there is one variant of Windows 10 that hasn't received as much attention: Windows 10 Mobile.
Windows chief Terry Myerson, speaking to The Verge, stated at Build 2016 that Windows 10 Mobile is not a focus for Microsoft over the coming year. According to him, the mobile variant of Windows is "part of the family but it's not the core of where I hope to generate developer interest over the next year."
Myerson even admitted that the user base of Windows 10 Mobile isn't significant enough: "if you wanted to reach a lot of phone customers, Windows Phone isn't the way to do it." Instead, the best way to reach customers is by developing apps for 9 to 30-inch screens (in other words, tablet, laptop and desktop users), while Xbox and HoloLens provide platforms to do "new and exciting things".
These statements from Myerson highlight why Microsoft has been focusing on other platforms, even rival mobile operating systems like Android and iOS, rather than Windows 10 Mobile. The potential target audience is simply greater on Windows 10 for desktops and rival mobile platforms, and with limited resources Microsoft wants to ensure these platforms deliver a great experience.
However, Microsoft isn't giving up on Windows 10 Mobile entirely. Although the mobile version of Windows isn't the company's focus this year, Myerson says that they're "going to do some cool things with phones" in the future. Whether that means Microsoft has a Surface Phone up their sleeves, only time will tell.

É compreensível que a M$ já nem ela acredite em algo que ninguém quer... isto está morto.

    The Status of Windows Phone

If you watched the opening keynote of Microsoft's Build conference, then you probably didn't see much Windows Phone (unless you were looking at your own). The Verge talked to Terry Myerson about this, and Microsoft confirmed that they are leading with non-Windows, 4-inch devices, and they want to “generate developer interest” on those platforms for this year.
PC World interpreted this conversation to say that Windows Phone is put on hold.

That might be a little hasty, though. Microsoft is still building Windows 10 for Mobile. In fact, since Microsoft updated “Windows OneCore” and jumped build to 14xxx-level build numbers with Windows 10 build 14251, Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10 PC are kept in lockstep. As far as I know, that is still the plan, and Windows Insiders should continue to receive these on compatible devices.
That said, Microsoft has basically admitted that Windows Phone would just be a distraction for developers this year. At the very least, they don't believe that the platform will be ready for them until next year's Build conference, which means that consumers will probably be even further down than that because there would be no applications for them. Yes, Windows Phone could be slowly shimmying out of the spotlight, but it could also be delayed until they make a good impression, and have the PC, Xbox, Hololens, and other ecosystems secure to lift it up.

Microsoft Puts Windows Phone On Back Burner To Focus On HoloLens And Xbox One

If you have a sneaky suspicion that Microsoft isn't putting as much effort into its Windows Phone plans as perhaps it could be, the first day of its Build Developer Conference in San Francisco would have done nothing to change to your mind. Microsoft talked about Windows 10 and all sorts of related technologies, but not much about Windows Phone. That wasn't by accident.

Like it or not, Microsoft's focus just isn't on phones at this point in time. Instead, the company is much more excited about the possibilities of HoloLens, its augmented reality headset and platform, and how Windows 10 can improve the Xbox One experience. That doesn't mean Microsoft is turning its back on Windows Phone, it just feels that now is not the time to push the category when there are others that are in vogue.

"We're fully committed to that 4-inch screen, there will be a time for it to be our focus, but right now it's part of the family but it's not the core of where I hope to generate developer interest over the next year," Microsoft's Terry Myerson told The Verge. "There's no lack of recognition to realize how important that form factor is, but for Microsoft with Windows and for our platform it's the wrong place for us to lead."

Microsoft is fully aware that its participation in the smartphone space is minimal. The cold, hard truth is that Android and iOS dominate virtually the entire landscape—the two combine for a 98.4 percent share of the worldwide smartphone market, according to the most recent data from Gartner. Meanwhile, Microsoft's share of the smartphone market is just a sliver over 1 percent.

Myerson wasn't dodgy about the situation when pressed about how Microsoft will grow Windows, either. He candidly admitted that Windows Phone simply isn't the way to reach a large number of phone customers at this point in time, and the numbers back him up on this.

"If you want to reach a lot of Windows customers, then this is the largest install base of 9 to 30-inch screens. If you wanted to do new and exciting things, then the Xbox and HoloLens is the place to have a discussion."

It's a little disappointing that Microsoft isn't trying harder with its phone strategy, but at the same time, it's encouraging that Microsoft has a pulse on the situation and is reacting accordingly.

Windows Phone Is Now ‘On Hold’

Microsoft has been keen on promoting their “one platform for all premise”. This meant that no matter what device you were using, be it your computer, a tablet or a phone, you would experience the same system. The concept of Windows Phone has recently been put in doubt, with major projects such as the porting of Android Apps to the platform being stopped and sales constantly decreasing. It would seem now that Windows Phones won’t be making any big steps anytime soon as the system is declared all but ‘on hold’.
Microsoft held their Build keynote on Wednesday, explaining all their big steps and their phones didn’t even get a mention. The reason it would seem is that, according to Windows chief Terry Myerson, it’s just not the right time for the “4-inch screen”. In his explanation, Myerson goes to say that “there will be a time for it to be our focus” and saying that while it is “a part of the family” the phones are not “the core of where I hope to generate developer interest over the next year”.
With the news that not all Lumia phones would be receiving the update to Windows 10 as previously promised among the collection of “updates not delivered” for Windows phones, it’s hard not to see the signs that the mobile OS will change from its new on hold status to something you’ll see anytime soon.
Are you a Windows Mobile user? Were you thinking of getting a Windows Mobile at any time? Having previously used one, I enjoyed it until the lack of support and apps meant that the experience was all but as thrilling as first advertised. Leave us your thoughts in the comments below about what Microsoft needs to do to make their mobiles as catchy as their PC’s and laptops.

Windows 10 Mobile Users Will be Able to Go Back to Windows Phone 8.1, Microsoft Confirms

Windows 10 Mobile started to roll out to selected Windows Phone 8.1 devices earlier in March. If you upgraded your device to Windows 10 Mobile, but aren’t happy with the newly released operating system, you will be able to easily switch back to Windows Phone 8.1 “indefinitely.”

Downgrade Windows 10 Mobile to Windows Phone 8.1

The latest mobile operating system offering from Microsoft isn’t available to many. Microsoft has confirmed that it won’t be adding any new devices to the list of supported Windows 10 Mobile devices. If you are one of the lucky few who received the OTA notification to upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile, we hope that you are enjoying the new operating system. However, the mobile OS is still in development and Microsoft made it clear at its Build 2016 conference that mobile is not one of its priorities this year.
Not liking the newly released Windows 10 Mobile on your own smartphone? Jason, a member of the Windows Insider Engineering team, confirmed on Twitter that users will be able to downgrade Windows 10 Mobile to Windows Phone 8.1 and that they will continue to have this option to go back to their previous OS.

    Jason ‎@NorthFaceHiker
@GabeAul For a Retail user going from 8.1 to 10 who may hit an issue and need to recover, they need an 8.1 image to recover to.

Following Apple’s strategy, it was initially believed that Microsoft may not offer the ability to go back to an earlier version of the mobile OS, due to security reasons. However, as Windows 10 Mobile is yet to be polished to offer full and stable functionality, it is wise to offer users to downgrade Windows 10 Mobile to Windows Phone 8.1. This might also help the company in getting more people on board the new operating system, as they won’t have to worry about being stuck with an OS they don’t end up liking.
If you too are unsatisfied with Windows 10 Mobile on your Windows phone, you can use Windows Device Recovery tool to flash a Windows Phone 8.1 recovery image to go back to the earlier OS.

    Boas!

    Cumprimentos,

Windows 10 Mobile Insider 14316 Delayed Due to a “Breaking Bug”

Microsoft has been releasing Insider Preview builds to both its Windows 10 for PC and Mobile users at the same time. However, when we received the Windows 10 Insider build 14316 for Desktop today, no new build was available for Mobile. Many wondered why the company has broken its earlier goal of a streamlined update process for its devices. The company has now confirmed that Windows 10 Mobile 14316 was also scheduled for release today, but due to a breaking cellular data bug, it couldn’t be rolled out.

Windows 10 Mobile 14316 expected to be released later this week

Insiders in the Fast ring received the Windows 10 Insider Preview build 14316 earlier today. The Preview build has brought in tons of new features and improvements, including a system-wide dark theme and cross-platform sync. Considered as one of the biggest preview releases yet, Mobile users were upset not to receive the build 14316 today. As Microsoft has been releasing both the PC and Mobile builds simultaneously for the last few Previews, Mobile users were expecting to receive today’s major update on their handsets too.
Worry not, as Microsoft does plan to send the feature-packed Windows 10 Mobile build 14316 to Insiders, and it might arrive later this week.
Microsoft hasn’t shared when exactly will it release the Mobile Preview build, but it is expected that we will see the Insider build on mobile devices later this week.

Next Windows 10 Mobile Redstone Preview to Introduce a Lock Screen Camera Button

Having released Windows 10 Mobile to Windows Phone handsets last month, Microsoft is currently working on the next major release for its mobile operating system. Windows 10 Mobile Redstone updates will bring some significant new features and changes to the OS, including better sync with Windows 10 PC, an improved Action Center and Notifications experience. Along with other changes and improvements, Windows 10 Mobile Redstone will also make it easier for users to access the Camera right from the lock screen.

Windows 10 Mobile Redstone to add a Camera button on the lock screen

Microsoft will add the ability to easily access Camera from the lock screen, by introducing a new button on the lock screen. Users will be able to open the Camera app by holding the Camera button on “the navigation bar whilst on the lock screen for around a second, before vibrating and opening the Camera app,” WinBeta reported. Microsoft is expected to introduce this Camera app feature in the next Insider Preview build, that is expected to be released next week. Microsoft released a major Preview build to Windows 10 PC Insiders this week, but couldn’t release any new test build to Windows 10 Mobile due to a breaking cellular data bug.

For those on Android and iOS wondering why there already isn’t a camera button on the lock screen, Windows 10 Mobile is still a new OS and is largely considered as a “work in progress.” We also have to consider the fact that most of the Lumia devices come with a dedicated camera button, making an onscreen button only redundant. As the new operating system is now going beyond Microsoft’s own devices, users interested in getting a Windows 10 Mobile phone must appreciate this new addition.

Not only this, but Redstone update will bring more such small changes and features, improving the overall user experience. Redstone builds are currently Insider Previews released to Windows Insider Program. Windows 10 for Desktop will receive these builds (dubbed as Windows 10 Anniversary Update) this summer. There is no information about when Redstone updates will be sent out to Windows 10 Mobile users.

Customizable Quick Actions and Improved Settings UI Coming to Windows 10 Mobile Redstone

Working on Redstone updates for both its Windows 10 for PC and Mobile operating systems, Microsoft has been giving its users some glimpses into what should we expect in terms of new features and system improvements. Microsoft is planning to bring in a number of new features and enhancements to the operating systems, making them not only more stable but also feature-rich. A latest Insider Preview sent to Windows 10 PC showcased many of the planned new features for the desktop operating system, including the ability to run Ubuntu natively on Windows 10.
Windows 10 Mobile Redstone to improve the UI and Action Center

The mobile operating system is still waiting for a major Insider Preview release, as Microsoft couldn’t deliver Windows 10 Mobile build 14316 due to a breaking cellular data bug. While we wait for the release of an Insider Preview, a new report has shared some of Microsoft’s plans for Windows 10 Mobile Redstone. Citing unnamed sources, folks at MSPoweruser say that the Action Center in Windows 10 Mobile Redstone will receive a significant update, among other things. We already heard reports and saw Microsoft shifting its focus to improving the Action Center in Windows 10 Desktop. The company has also added support for Android devices with Windows 10 Notifications. An improved Action Center for Windows 10 Mobile Redstone was also expected to come our way.
The report suggests that along with notification syncing and an improved UI, Windows 10 Mobile Redstone will also introduce new features for Quick Actions. The expanded menu will be customizable simply by dragging and dropping the icons into user-preferred order. Currently, only the bottom row can be customized.
With Redstone, Microsoft will allow users to customize the order of quick actions even when the panel is expanded.
[…] Microsoft has implemented a drag-and-drop user interface, which allows users to easily customize the order of quick actions by tapping and holding a quick action, and moving it around.

The report further says that the ability to customize the order of the Quick Actions is only available through System Settings, in the current test builds.

Our sources state that the ability to customize the order of the Quick Actions isn’t available right in the Action Center just yet, and users will have to go to Settings to change the order of the quick actions.

Bringing the customization options for Quick Actions to Settings, Microsoft is also working on improving the Settings app, including introducing some new icons for the sub menus.
Microsoft Releases Windows 10 Mobile Build 10586.71 Bringing Tons of Bug Fixes

Microsoft’s Gabe Aul tweeted earlier that a new PC Preview build might be released this week, but there is still no word about when we would get a new Windows 10 Mobile Redstone build. It is not known if the improvements shared in this report will be part of the next Insider Preview build, or if we would have to wait longer to see an improved Settings menu and customizable Quick Actions.

Windows 10 Mobile 14322 Released to the Fast Ring with Improved Action Center, Emoji and More

As Gabe Aul had promised, Windows 10 Mobile 14322 is now being released to the Insiders on the Fast Ring of Windows Insider Program. The build is a major update coming to the Windows 10 Mobile users, bringing improved Action Center and Notifications, Edge improvements, camera button on the lock screen, updated emoji, and much more.
Here are all the known issues and feature improvements in the mobile operating system’s latest Preview build.

Windows 10 Mobile 14322 releasing to the Fast ring

Microsoft couldn’t release Windows 10 Mobile 14316 when the same build was seeded to those on the desktop version of the operating system. Microsoft’s Gabe Aul had promised yesterday that while a new PC Preview build is now delayed until next week, Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview build 14322 will be releasing this week. If you are enrolled to the Windows Insider Program and are on the Fast Ring, you can update your Windows handset to the latest preview build.
    What’s new in Windows 10 Mobile 14322

    • Improvements to Action Center & Notifications
      • Visual changes to Action Center.
      • Visual changes to Notifications, similar to the richness of Live Tiles.
      • Cortana notifications in Action Center.
      • Notification prioritization in Action Center: You can manage the notification settings for individual apps by going to Settings > System > Notifications & actions and prioritize which app notifications are more important to you. This feature is also available on PC starting with Build 14316.
      • Customize your Quick Actions in Action Center: You can add, remove and re-arrange the Quick Actions that show up in Action Center. To customize your Quick Actions, just go to the Settings > System > Notifications & actions.

    • Cortana Improvements
      • More ways to create Cortana Reminders: We are making it easier and quicker to set a reminder in Cortana with 2 new exciting ways to create reminders – Photo Reminder and the ability to set reminders on content from UWP apps.

    • Updates to the Settings app
      • All pages in the Settings app now have individual icons associated with them. These individual icons will also be shown when you pin a settings page to Start.
      • Navigation bar settings page and vibration setting: We created a page for the navigation bar at Settings > Personalization > Navigation bar.
      • Glance screen settings have moved: we’ve simplified the Glance settings options and moved the page out of the Extras section in the Settings app. These settings can now be found via Settings > Personalization > Glance screen.
      • Updated Battery Settings and Battery Saving Experience: similar to Windows 10 PC 14316
      • Updated Windows Update Settings: You can now also set the time in which you are most active on your phone just like on your PC by adjusting active hours under Settings > Update & security > Windows Update. Windows Update will avoid automatically installing updates during your active hours on your device.

    • Updated emoji
    • Microsoft Edge Improvements
      • Better tab behavior

    • USB Ethernet Support with Continuum (Mobile)
    • Improved experience while on Lock screen: As leaked before, camera button is now available on the Lock screen.

    Windows 10 Mobile 10586.71 Now Available for Non-Insider Lumia 950, 950 XL and 550

Windows 10 Mobile 14322 known issues

    • Language and speech packs are unable to be downloaded and will show errors due to a backend issue.
    • We’re investigating a crash with the Camera app when going into your camera roll.
    • There is an issue in which you may see duplicate apps under All apps showing as pending despite being installed and usable on your phone. You may also see some apps stuck in the Store.
    • You may see square boxes in certain apps when using some of the new emoji – we’re still getting support for the new emoji added throughout the systems, this will be resolved in a future build.
    • In some cases, users might get in a state where neither space or enter are working on the keyboard. If that happens, pressing and holding one of the apps in the All apps list until a context menu appears may resolve the issue. If this doesn’t work, you will need to reboot.

    Boa noite,

Grande parte da linha Lumia está agora fora de stock. Será o fim dos Lumia? O início da caminhada para o Surface Phone? O tempo o dirá. Mas é uma fase... intrigante.

    Bom dia,

Não, a Microsoft não vai desistir do Windows 10 Mobile. Mesmo com 0,4% de mercado.

Nada de surpreendente mas é interessante a empresa vir a público esclarecer isto, porque muita gente dizia que era provável desistirem.

    Cumprimentos.
