    Sage Microelectronics enables 5TB SATA SSDs


    Most SATA SSDs top out at 1TB, but a Chinese firm called Sage Microelectronics has developed a controller that enables drives with five times that capacity. The chip is already "shipping in volume" in a 2.5-incher that squeezes 2.5TB onto a single circuit board.Unlike most SSD controllers, which are designed to work with individual flash memory chips, the Sage S68x family uses SD, MMC, and eMMC modules. Data is striped across up to 10 parallel channels, each of which can host four flash devices. A 10 x 4 x 128GB "array" is required to hit 5TB, and redundancy doesn't appear to be a part of the picture. The arrangement resembles a RAID 0 setup.

    Samsung compra Proximal Data.

    Samsung has formally announced their purchase of Proximal Data for their innovative server-side caching software. As enterprise SSD manufacturers continue to mature we have witnessed a string of acquisitions of various caching companies. Caching technology provides HDD capacity and the speed of flash, and also provide companies with a clear differentiator for their products. Samsung originally purchased NVELO in 2012, and their caching solution was quickly merged into Samsung's client offerings as RAPID caching technology.


    Proximal Data is geared for virtualized environments. Their award-winning AutoCache software embeds I/O intelligence inside the hypervisor to cache hot I/O onto server-side flash. It's intelligent and selective caching removes the I/O bottleneck and improves VM density and efficiency. As with all caching software your mileage may vary, but typical AutoCache implementations sport 2x to 3x performance improvements.

    During our coverage of the Flash Memory Summit, we spotted the new Phison PS3110-S10 controller:

    At that time we only knew that Phison was going to team up with another SSD manufacturer to get these to market. We now know that manufacturer is Corsair, and their new product is to be called the Neutron XT. How do we know this? Well, we've got one sitting right here:

    While the Neutron has not officially launched (pricing is not even available), we have been afforded an early look into the performance of this new controller / SSD. While this is suspected to be a cost effective entry into the SSD marketplace, for now all we can do is evaluate the performance, so let's get to it!

    Aviso importante para quem tem um SSD: não instalem jogos que usem o DRM Denovo, ou vão desgastar as células do SSD muito mais rapidamente.

    So this text is basically a 1:1 copy of a post by facepunch user Korova:"Resource monitors for RAM and CPU consumption numbers, memory viewer for trying to figure out what makes it tick and track address issues, SSD analysis tools for those delicious dead blocks and data tracking. Wanna know average number of times parts of LotF exe code are fcked around between RAM and HDD in the span of one hour? 150000 copy/write iterations. That's about 10000 times more than usual. DRM constantly decrypts the game code into the memory and encrypts it back. This is the most bull**** usage of encryption software I've ever stumbled upon. And even though code chunks are quite small (couple of kilobytes per go at worst), they are all stored in one memory block.     So check your install folder for Origin games. You might want to switch over to your hard disk drive with spinning iron plates instead of sacrificing the life of your solid state drive too early. Denuvo is also used by "Lords of the Fallen" and FIFA 15 so far. I think a lot of games will follow. Actually, this would be a good time for crackers to circumvent this protection method since Denuvo will actively destroy hardware over time. I am waiting for the first complaints and lawsuits due to destroyed hardware caused by Denuvo. Sony should probably put some money on the side for those lawsuits.     For anyone that isn't following this thing, Denuvo is a DRM that encrypts and decrypts itself while you play the game so it's extremely difficult to crack. If these numbers are true, SSD users are fucked and it isn't doing anyone any favors with their normal hard drives.
    New information has come out
    From a russian forum: "The game's read\write operations per 40 minutes resulted in 30 GB of data processed. The number of operations done is insane. SSD's wear level hasn't changed though, however, the load is EXTREMELY high, so after, say, 100 hours of gameplay memory blocks will definitely start to wear down."

    SSDs bigs para mercado empresarial

    Foremay, Inc. has announced their new 4TB and 8TB SATA 6Gb/s SSDs. SATA SSDs are one of the hottest growth segments in the datacenter, and more capacity is always welcome. There are SAS SSDs with up to 4TB of capacity, such as the SanDisk Optimus MAX, but the introdcution of a high-capacity SATA SSD will broaden the use-case for high-capacity SSDs.     Plextor M6e 256GB SSD Review - speedy PCIe on the cheap

    Introduction:
    In recent years, Plextor has branched beyond their renowned lines of optical storage devices, and into the realm of SSDs. They have done fairly well so far, treading carefully on their selection of controllers and form factors. Their most recent offerings include the M6S and M6M (reviewed here), and are based on Marvell controllers coupled with Toshiba flash. Given that the most recent Marvell controllers are also available in a PCIe variant, Plextor also chose to offer their M6 series in PCIe half height and M.2 form factor. These last two offerings are not simply SATA SSDs bridged over to PCIe, they are natively PCIe 2.0 x2 (1 GB/s), which gives a nice boost over the current SATA limit of 6Gb/sec (600 MB/sec). Today we are going to kill two birds with one stone by evaluating the half-height PCIe version:

    As you can see, this is nothing more than the M.2 version on a Plextor branded interposer board. All results of this review should be identical to the bare M.2 unit plugged into a PCIe 2.0 x2 capable M.2 port on either a motherboard or mobile device. Note that those devices need to support the 2280 form factor, which is 80mm in length.

    Aquele é um SSD PCIe, simplesmente vem com adaptador incluído, para dar em motherbords mais antigas que não tenham entrada M.2.

    Logicamente não é dos mais rápidos, porque o preço também é bem mais contido. O Samsung XP941 ultrapassa os 1GB/s de sequencial, mas custa um rim.

    O meu Plextor igual a esse anda assim:

    OCZ Storage Solutions is leveraging their homegrown Barefoot 3 controller and firmware in tandem with Toshiba A19nm NAND for the new Sabre 1000 SSD Series. OCZ's move to their own proprietary SSD controller is a big step that provides them with tremendous flexibility to tailor their products for different segments.     Intel Adds 3D NAND to the Roadmap for 2015 Products

    In an earnings call today for investors, Robert Crooke, VP and GM NVM Solutions Group, publicly announced Intel's 3D NAND. The new 3D structure will use lithography larger than 20nm but Intel didn't disclose anything further. The new 3D NAND will be produced in Utah, a IMFT factory, Intel's joint venture with Micron Technology.

    Intel stressed the disruptive nature of the new 3D structure. The company plans to release products in the second half of 2015 with the new flash and plans to use the technology to disrupt SSD prices.


    Intel did disclose the new 3D NAND will be 256Gb die density and use 32 layers with roughly 4 billion vertical pinholes. Three-bit per cell 3D NAND is also on the map at 384 Gb die density. The company clams 1TB of density in a 2mm stack. That will eventually lead to cost competitive 10+ TB SSDs in two years after release.
