Epic Releases New Version Of Unreal Engine

    Epic Games released on Wednesday
the latest version of its Unreal Engine game engine, version 4.6. A number of new assets have also been added to the Unreal Engine Marketplace, including the Medieval Inn and Tavern by Ennelia Studio, VFX Weather Pack by Thomas Harle, Space Shooter/Sim Music Loops Pack by Stephen Lu and more.
According to Epic Games, the updated engine allows developers to create a single world up to 12.43 miles across. Developers can string these worlds together by using a feature called World Composition. The updated engine also now supports up to 128 unique textures per material, enabling highly detailed characters and terrain.
Mobile game developers should like the new Mobile Preview feature that enables them to see their creations without having to exit the Unreal Editor. There's even a new Web Browser UI widget for navigating and hosting web pages from within the game.
Epic's updated engine now allows developers to save an instant replay of gameplay so that they can share and stream content to the public (read hype machine). The overall workflow is also faster thanks to a number of C++ optimizations, and new content is currently available in the launcher's Learn tab.

Silent Hill P.T. Recreated With Unreal Engine 4 engine

Check this out, djoexe has been working these past months on a recreation of Silent Hill P.T. in Unreal Engine 4, and released a couple of days ago a flythrough video from it. Based on the awesome demo on PS4, he recreated this beautiful environment on the Unreal Engine 4. Video after the break.
I took hundred of screenshot while playing the game to get my references as well as playing the game and observing the proportion and mood. The last scene were the player get killed was captured straight from the game though. This video is for a portfolio purpose and not a commercial goal at all.

Unreal Engine 4 Powered ARPG Age of Blood Gets Greenlit on Steam

Age of Blood, an ARPG game by the indie developers Galaxy Interactive, has recently been greenlit on Steam as well as a complete re-wrap of everything. The game had started out based on UDK, but the goals for the game just weren’t within reach with that. So an almost complete recode and now it all runs on the Unreal Engine 4 and looks better than ever.

Playing as either Cael or Ariet, adventurers find themselves marooned on the Island of Heavens Fall, but after a failed invasion our heroes find themselves locked in a battle against the Scourge, a technologically advanced and psychically enhanced menace not of this world.
Harnessing the power of the gods both Cael and Ariet utilise a vast array of skills specialising in either Necromancy, Demonology, or Angelology. As Cael you’ll engage in bone-breaking close-combat or annihilate your foes from afar in third-person magic based combat incorporating forbidden magic and summoned monsters.
Trapped on Heaven’s Fall island, players will discover long forgotten temples, be challenged to solving nefarious puzzles, explore perilous locations, and ultimately uncover the secrets of the Scourge and a mysterious ancient race with the ultimate goal of banishing the Scourge from the world once and for all.

With the new engine to power everything, a new video and new screenshots have been released to showcase the advancements and some of the different game environments. The goal to get the game on Kickstarter is still existing, but there isn’t a final timeframe on that. As the last update note said, they want to release a great product and that takes time, and that is in my opinion a great thing considering some of the crappy game releases we’ve seen lately.

More detailed information about the upcoming Age of Blood can be found on the game’s official website and the Steam Greenlight page.

Fan Makes HD Recreation of Rockstar’s Bully in Unreal 4

Nine years after Bully – Rockstar’s schoolyard equivalent of Grant Theft Auto, also known in some regions as Canis Canem Edit – was released, a dedicated fan has recreated the game’s Bullworth Academy in Unreal Engine 4, and it looks gorgeous.
Wesley Arthur, a designed and prop artist, created everything in the recreation from scratch, and posted highlights – including the video and screenshots below – on the Unreal Engine website:

Epic Games Has New Developer Grant Fund

Epic Games is looking to increase the adoption of its very capable graphics engine platform, Unreal Engine by offering something that very few vendors currently can do at the moment. Crytek certainly isn’t in a position to offer any sort of assistance on the scale that Epic Games is; Unreal Dev Grants.

Epic Games has a $5 Million fund that’s to be used solely for budding developers who apply for it.

GamesBeat was recently able to chat with Tim Sweeney of Epic Games about this newly created fund. They report that the only real caveat when applying for and using the grants supplied by Epic Games is that they, obviously, must use the Unreal Engine 4. Other than that, it seems as if there are very few rules, and that it’s essentially a “no strings attached” affair that enables even the most inexperienced of developers a chance to fund their own game.
    It seems that this decision stems from Sweeney’s own experiences with game development from when he himself was a young man. He shared his experiences and challenges that were associated with developing his very first game ZZT and how money was certainly the largest issue. Apparently he took to odd jobs to fund his development. Sweeney says rather succinctly that the idea behind the large fund is;

“The goal of this is to help people develop more games without having to mow lawns,”

Interestingly, Sweeney and Epic Games don’t just want this to be a platform for game developers either. He also invites creative people from all industries to make use of the Unreal Engine to create, well, anything, from visualizations of the real world for more scientific projects to even animated stories made with Unreal technology, similar to the Source Filmmaker or the Crytek Cinebox. Also, this could very well be a great platform for making special effects for movies, in the aforementioned
The grants themselves will be given out based on what the team at Epic Games deems to be creative, inspired and generally all around interesting to them. You can receive between $5,000 and $50,000.
Another very important point that Sweeney did mention, is that there is no contract by accepting a grant, aside from the aforementioned use of Unreal Engine. You do with the money as you will, you publish via the route that makes sense to you and you most certainly keep the intellectual property rights to your ideas.
It’s fascinating because it opens a tremendous amount of doors for those where it previously wouldn’t be. It allows those that simply don’t have the capital or aren’t blessed by their own incomes to fund such things, to seek out and take hold of a great opportunity. Making games takes time and money, whether that’s because the tools cost money or your time does. Either way, it should be a great opportunity for everyone. It’s a true investment into the future of the industry.
So head on over to the Epic Games source and start applying, I’m curious to see how this progresses and what new games and other projects come out of it.

Epic announces Unreal Dev Grants program, giving developers free money

While Epic Games' founder Tim Sweeney is teasing that VR will be indistinguishable from real life within 10 years, the company has just announced its Unreal Dev Grants program that will see developers working in and around its powerful Unreal Engine 4.

Epic Games has placed $5 million into the kitty for Unreal Dev Grants, where the studio will award developers amounts between $5000 and $50,000. Better yet, the studio will not be attaching any strings to the project. Tim Sweeney has weighed into the chat about Unreal Dev Grants, where he said that in order to fund the release of his first game, Sweeney borrowed his father's tractor and spent two entire summers mowing lawns. He said that the cost of getting games from the prototype stage to finished projects takes much more than just a part-time summer job.

Sweeney spoke with Polygon, where he said: "There's absolutely no substitute for money because some of these things require real-world expenses and can't be solved just by creativity and motivation alone". He added: "It's really hard for an indie now, given how crowded the market is. Even if you're going to start a Kickstarter campaign, that takes a significant effort. And that's a big change from the original days. So we set up this grant program to help people make that first big leap, which we see pretty consistently now requires some financial resources".

Back to the grants, of which they will be awarded on a rolling basis. Applicants will need to introduce themselves and their team, talk about their project briefly, and then provide a video demonstration of their working prototype. Epic will take it from there. Sweeney added: "Eighty percent of nominations will be publicly known, publicized, and the developers of them will actually want the publicity because it helps bring props and awareness to their project. We're happy to promote things for customers through our blog, our official media channels where it's desirable. But some of them are often top-secret until they launch, and some teams try to derive some competitive edge from that. We're open to that too. So there might an announcement of the sort that 'Epic has awarded $20,000 in grants to an awesome project that is still unannounced, so stay tuned for details later".

Epic Games won't be taking any share of the game's revenue, with the team behind the games being submitted retaining the rights to their intellectual property. As for the money they receive from Epic Games through the Unreal Dev Grants program, the teams can do whatever they want with the money. It can almost be seen as a recognition from Epic, a gift, that the teams can do what they want with. In saying that, Epic Games is looking past this program, as they're looking at supporting educational projects, university programs, government and military projects, too.
