Nintendo celebra 125º aniversário

A companhia nipónica nasceu a 23 de Setembro de 1889 e desde 1975 se dedicou quase exclusivamente na produção de videojogos.

A produtora centenária passou as primeiras décadas da sua existência a criar jogos de cartas e brinquedos e foi em 1975, com Donkey Kong, que tomou conta das arcadas e começou a traçar um trajecto de sucesso nos videojogos.

Os títulos mutiplicaram-se: Super Mario Brothers, The Legend Of Zelda, Metroid, Pokémon, Star Fox, F-Zero, Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, WarioWare, Kid Icarus, Kirby, Mario Kart, Smash Bros. e Pikmin.

Wii Sports, lançado em 2006 para a Wii, é até hoje o título que mais vendeu para consolas caseiras superando a marca dos 80 milhões de unidades.

A primeira consola caseira publicada no ocidente pela produrora foi a Nintendo Enterteinment System, conhecida pela sigla NES, que foi redesenhada partindo da Famicon original de 1983. A NES chegou à Europa em 1986.

Em 1990, a Europa recebe a Game Boy que parte da portátil original Game & Watch original de 1980. Em 2005 foi lançada na Europa a sua sucessora espiritual Nintendo DS que é a consola portátil mais vendida de sempre, superando a Game Boy, com mais de 150 milhões de vendas em todo o mundo.

A sua contribuição para a indústria continua e todos os entusiastas, utilizadores e apreciadores dos videojogos têm um sentimento de gratidão em comum.

Admito que nunca tive uma consola da Nintendo, mas tenho de dar o mérito a uma das empresas que mais deu à industria dos videojogos.

Tenho lá duas Relíquias bem guardadas! Super Nintendo e N64.

Tive a NES mas não sei o que é feito dela, se calhar tá em casa de algum familiar. old time!!

Também nunca tive consolas da Nintendo, mas é de salientar tudo o que esta empresa deu aos videojogos, seja com consolas, seja com alguns jogos miticos dos seus sistemas.

Guiness World Record For 8000 Nintendo Games

33-year-old Ahmed bin Fahad from the United Arab Emirates has been given a Guiness World Record for the “largest collection of Nintendo Entertainment System paraphernalia”.
Even though his record only fits his NES collection, he claims to have over 8000 games, covering Nintendo’s ancient arcade cabinets, the Famicom, NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii and Wii U. He also has a giant collection of Game Boy and Nintendo DS games.
Fahad, who is a police officer by day, estimates to have spent over £260,000 on his collection.

“It is a very expensive hobby, but I wanted to set this record to give a message to the world that Arabs are not only interested in speeding cars and flashy things”.

I guess this puts my paltry N64 collection to shame.

Nintendo Patents Game Boy Games For Phones, Donkey Kong, Zelda, Mario And Luigi Going Mobile

While playing my favorite MMORPG a couple of nights ago with a friend, the subject of emulation came up - one that I'm always happy to indulge in. This friend told me that while mobile, she uses a Game Boy emulator on her phone to help pass the time. That led to me say, as I have many times in the past, that it'd be a smart move for Nintendo to release its games on mobile platforms. But alas, that's something that's been talked-about for a while, and Nintendo is infamously stubborn when it comes to games being made available on non-Nintendo platforms.

Well, little did I realize, a patent was made public mere days earlier that described the exact thing I figured would never happen: Nintendo has plans to create emulators for the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance. That's a list that could grow over time, but those are the only three that are explicitly mentioned in the patent.
Before going further, I should clarify an important point: It's highly unlikely that Nintendo is going to release actual emulators that will allow players to drop in their own ROMs. Instead, the company is likely to sell individual games on various mobile marketplaces, as well as compilations. What this means is, it's not as though the entire library for each of these Game Boy platforms will suddenly become available on mobile.
For emulation fans, nothing here is likely to change outside of the fact that you'll be able to get the games legally and support Nintendo directly. I should note that it is already legal if you want to play ROM dumps you created of games you own.

Nintendo and Philips settle patent dispute

Nintendo and Philips have managed to come to a settlement agreement over a patent legal dispute. Back in May, Philips tried to stop the sale of a few Nintendo devices in the US, claiming that two of its motion control patents had been infringed, this claim was upheld in court a month later.
Nintendo and Philips have now agreed to “cross license portions of each company’s patent portfolio”, a deal that is becoming increasingly common in the Android market, with Google agreeing to share patents with the likes of Samsung and LG. Since the two companies came to this agreement, Philips has put a stop to legal action.

Nintendo’s European general counsel, Martina Franke, said that the company is “pleased to have reached agreement with Philips, as it demonstrates that both companies recognize the importance of intellectual property rights”.
“Nintendo has a substantial IP portfolio and a long history of developing innovative products while respecting valid intellectual property rights of others”.
