Another Android SMS Virus in the Wild: Gazon

Well folks, it looks like another great deal just isn’t as good as it seems. You know what they say, right? If it looks to good to be true, it probably is. So be on the lookout for yet another Android virus that spreads around via SMS, messaging as many contacts as it can.
Adaptive Mobile has uncovered Gazon, a virus that spreads by SMSing all of your contacts an enticing link.

Adaptive Mobile has recently reported that there is a malware ridden app that pretends to be an Amazon Rewards app, dubbed Gazon. Once installed it actually farms your contacts and then sends a message to each and every number stored in your phone contacts. This mechanism isn’t new by any means, and there are certainly several such apps that exist in the wild. I even received a spam group message complete with a shortened link just the other day, presumably from one of the other pieces of SMS Android malware.

Gazon actually doesn’t seem to send any data back to command and control systems, but instead continues to populate pages and links for which when you click, the author of Gazon earns money. So it’s a more passive way to make money as opposed to just outright stealing of information.
    Courtesy Sophos

While you’re busy clicking on links and being redirected to all sorts of pages that certainly aren’t an Amazon gift card, the malware is executing the following, so as to propagate itself to the rest of the world.

It primarily seems to be spreading through North America, though it’s certainly made the rounds to the rest of the world. Theoretically this type of malware could propagate itself to a large population very quickly. But this particular piece seems to be limited somehow, perhaps even by the wariness of receiving unknown text messages.
The fact that there is no command and control or other heinous bits of code doesn’t mean that such a virus can’t be adapted to also harvest personal information for other purposes. So be on the lookout for fake reward type apps and just be sure that the author is the owner of the site for which you are promised a reward. Also, don’t click on random weird and suspicious links coming from messages. In other words, browse smart!

Microsoft is bringing Cortana to Android and iOS

Microsoft will soon give people one less reason to purchase a Windows Phone, as its digital assistant, Cortana, is reportedly headed to Android and iOS as a standalone application.
At this stage Microsoft has only hinted at when Cortana will hit competing mobile platforms, with managing director of Microsoft Research, Eric Horvitz, saying that "the next roll out of Cortana" is scheduled for sometime this fall. This places its release around the same time as Windows 10, which Microsoft is also working to integrate Cortana into.
As well as bringing Cortana to more mobile platforms, Microsoft is working on a major update to the virtual assistant that uses research from "Einstein", an artificial intelligence project at Microsoft Research. Details are light on at this stage, but it was mentioned that Microsoft hopes Einstein will transform Cortana into "the first intelligent 'agent' which anticipates users needs".
The choice to bring Cortana to other mobile platforms is all part of CEO Satya Nadella's plan to increase the reach of Microsoft's services. Rather than attempting to get users to switch to their operating systems, Microsoft can gain users of their software platforms and services by offering tools like Cortana on other OSes.
Unfortunately the news likely won't please Windows Phone fans, who have felt neglected by Microsoft for quite some time. Now that one of the main selling points of the OS is moving to other platforms, it leaves Windows Phone users with few truly exclusive features.

Android 5.0 Lollipop Rolling Out To Sony Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact And Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact

Recently, Sony announced that it would upgrade some of its Z2-series devices, as well as the more recent Z3-series smartphones and tablet, to Android 5.0 Lollipop. The devices that were supposed to receive the Lollipop upgrade were the Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.
Today, Sony will begin the rollout for the Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact and Z3 Tablet Compact. However, the timing and availability may differ depending on the market or the carrier. Sony announced that the lower-end Xperia T2 Ultra and Xperia C3 will also receive the Android 5.0 upgrade.
From the looks of it, Sony's recent upgrade, which is heavily inspired by Google's new "material design" guidelines, looks even more like the stock version of Android than the previous Sony custom UI did. In fact, it's probably the closest stock-like custom UI for post-Lollipop devices, which should be a major benefit to some Android smartphone customers. Although Sony seems to have added its own implementations in some places, the design has remained minimalistic and modern.
One area where the company improved Google's software is in making it easier to move applications from local storage to the SD card. Google isn't a big fan of SD cards, as we've seen with the Nexus devices over the past few years, but most other devices out there still have them. Many low-end devices don't have much room left on the internal storage, which makes the SD card expansion necessary.
Sony also incorporated Lollipop's multi-user features, which allows multiple family members to use the same device. That may not happen too often with a smartphone, but tablets are often used by multiple people. Lollipop's multi-user accounts makes it easy for everyone to have their own accounts and switch seamlessly between them.

Last month, Google announced the "Android for Work" program that can help users create work profiles that isolate and protect work data. IT admins can then install approved applications but not have access to users' personal applications. Sony supports this program across all of its Lollipop devices, including all the ones being upgraded.
The company will share more information about what other devices will receive the Android 5.0 upgrade soon.

Sony Continues to Update Its Smartphones to Android Lollipop

Sony announced that it will continue to roll out Android Lollipop 5.0 updates for a variety of its smartphones starting today, April 13. The company has focused on models such as the Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z3 Dual, which means that if you own one of these particular smartphones, you might want to keep an eye out for an update notification. Sony also stated that Lollipop will arrive on the Xperia C3 and Xperia T2 Ultra starting next week, and the news also goes for the dual SIM versions of these devices.
Next in line are the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR and Xperia Tablet Z models, which will receive the newest Android “in a few weeks time.” Now keep in mind that the availability of these updates might depend on local carriers and markets, which means that not everyone will benefit from them at the same time. It looks like Sony is determined to outfit its gadgets with the fresh operating system as soon as possible, which comes as no surprise considering the fact that Lollipop is touted to be the most stable and user-friendly Android to date. Do you own a Sony Xperia, and if you do, are you looking forward to the Lollipop update?
Thank you Sonymobile for providing us with this information.

Cheetah Mobile: 99% of Android phone users faced a potential threat

A whopping 99 percent of Google Android phone owners faced a potential threat from cybersecurity loopholes, according to the Cheetah Mobile 2014 Mobile Security Report.

Mobile users faced a number of different phishing scams, malware attacks, and data leaks in 2014 - and social network phishing is evolving, posing even more threats that users should be aware of.

Android, the most popular mobile operating system, has been applauded for its open source ecosystem - which also gives cybercriminals the ability to easily create malicious tools. Cybersecurity experts recommend running an anti-malware scanner, at the very least, to help identify potential threats that could be avoided.

Samsung upgrades Galaxy Alpha to Lollypop

    Starts in Korea

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha update to Android Lollipop has begun in South Korea.

According to Sam Mobile the Lollipop update has already arrived for several Samsung Galaxy phones including the Galaxy S5 and S4, Galaxy Note 4, Note 3 and others.
It looks like Galaxy S4 mini may not receive it and while the Galaxy Alpha missed out on an earlier appearance of the update for Q1, it looks like Android 5.0.2 Lollipop is finally making its way to the handset.
So far the update has only been seen on three major South Korean carriers and there is no indication when it will be appearing in the West. Normally it is a few weeks after the Eastern release.
    Over the air

It's available there as an over-the-air update or via Samsung Kies, and is the same version as the update for the above devices, with the new Material Design and refreshed UI.
The upgrade is worth having because it will bring performance optimisations and notifications improvements, and enhanced battery life.

7 Months After Its Official Release, Lollipop Creeps To 9% Of Android Device Market

Terry Myerson, Microsoft's Executive Vice President of Operating Systems, really stuck a knife into Google’s stomach yesterday at the Microsoft Ignite conference. More specifically, Myerson took issue with Google’s reluctance to prod its carrier partners into delivering timely OS updates for devices that run Android.

"Google ships a big pile of… code, with no commitment to update your device," Myerson said yesterday when referencing the current state of Android fragmentation. "Google takes no responsibility to update customer devices and refuses to take responsibility to update their devices, leaving end users and businesses increasingly exposed every day they use an Android device."
Myerson can probably add a little more gasoline to his Android bonfire courtesy of new market share numbers for Android 5.x Lollipop. Lollipop was announced in late June 2014 and made it way to the first crop of eligible devices on November 12, 2014. Seven months later, Lollipop is installed on just 9 percent of all Android devices worldwide.

When the Android Distribution numbers were released early last month, just over 5 percent of devices were running Lollipop. One month later, we’re at 9 percent which can be attributed to carriers finally getting around to releasing the OS to legacy hardware and new flagship releases like the HTC One M9 and Samsung Galaxy S6/Galaxy S6 Edge.
But while Lollipop has made significant gains in just one month, the most popular Android distribution continues to be KitKat with a 39.8 percent share. Interestingly enough, Jellybean is not far behind with a 39.2 percent share.
As more flagships enter the market (we’re looking at you, LG G4) and carrier updates continue to stream out, we should see Lollipop number slowly increase over the next few months.

AMIDuOS Becomes Better Tool For All With Android Lollipop Beta

AMIDuOS is continuing its evolution with a new Android 5.0 Lollipop beta edition. Although updating to Lollipop is key to the success of the AMIDuOS system, the beta contains several other improvements that may actually prove to be more important than the change in the version of Android.
If you frequent Tom's Hardware, then you likely remember our first-hand coverage of the application back in February. At the time, the application was limited to Android 4.2.2, which was fine for the initial release, but for a program like this it is crucial to use the latest version of Android.
Although users have many reasons to enjoy the application, which can be used to run virtually any Android app, we felt that AMIDuOS had more to offer developers. Testing applications on an actual device could cause numerous problems, as it conflicts with other software on your smartphone or tablet. In addition, the added time of moving applications to the phone for testing, and the slower speed of the device, could impede application development.
Because AMIDuOS has access to the much faster hardware inside of the host PC it is installed on, transferring files and running applications occurs much faster, and faulty issues with the program that could cause incompatible programs clashing or cause stability issues are easier to recover from.
However, to be the most useful for developers, obviously, the program needs to be using the same OS and software, and this update delivers just that. In addition, the update brings the ability to run 64-bit apps and features improved A/V synchronization between the host system and the AMIDuOS emulator. It also has higher-performance graphics and audio, new APIs for Bluetooth LE, multi-networking and NFC capabilities, and more.
Undoubtedly, all of these added compatibility features are essential to Android developers, but Android gaming has been a fast-growing market in the last several years, and non-developers can take advantage of AMIDuOS to play these games much faster than their smartphone or tablet ever could.
Long story short, this update is probably the most revolutionary upgrade to the program since its initial release, and it gives users and developers a more comprehensive program for running and developing Android applications.
AMIDuOS still offers a lifetime license that costs $10, or you can test it out with a 60-day free trial.
Update 6/17/2015 7:25PM ET: AMIDuOS informed us that the free trial period has been extended to 60-days.

Do Not Disturb 'Until Next Alarm' Function Mysteriously Vanishing From Android Smartphones

For some, one of the most useful updates to hit Android 5.0 'Lollipop' was the notification tweaker. With it, you can block different types of communications when you don't want to be disturbed, but still let important stuff through. Making this feature even more useful is the ability to lift the blocks automatically at a certain time, such as in the early AM when you are getting ready for your day.
This "Set until next alarm" feature is undoubtedly useful, and perhaps even important, for many. So you can imagine the faces of those who need it when they load up the notification pane and see that the option no longer exists.
    image: http://hothardware.com/ContentImages...nt/android.jpg

When this news first hit the Web a few days ago, the general consensus was that the removal was caused by an update to Android 6.0.1, but as discussions continued, it even affected those running Android 5.1, who didn't update at all.
While there's no word straight from Google's mouth on this matter yet, thanks to community efforts to sort this out, it seems that the feature's removal is due to nothing more than a bug. Apparently, if you disable the automatic time feature in the Android OS and then roll back the date to December 25 or earlier, the option returns.
Some speculate that this feature is somehow tied to Google's servers, and it could be that it's those servers that are having the issue, but the issue is downright bizarre nonetheless. How a feature like this would be tied to a specific date, seemingly Christmas day, is really questionable, although it could just be nothing more than a hiccup that happened to pick a coincidental day to occur.
Fortunately, since it does just appear to be a bug, a fix should be en route.

HTC’s Boost+ App Will Declutter And Optimize All Android Devices

Before today, the HTC was running wild in the Rumor Mill. While we already knew most of the features, some of them are absolutely first to touch. Nonetheless, we won’t have to worry about what’s next for HTC for another year. However, apart from the smartphone itself and the ‘Ice View’ accessory that goes along with it, HTC has also unveiled a new app for all Android users out there.

HTC Boost+ Will Be Available To All Devices Running Android 5.0 or Higher

Along with the HTC 10, the company unveiled a brand new Boost+ app for all devices running Android Lollipop 5.0 and up. This means that the app is not restricted to operate on HTC devices alone, but can be installed by anyone on their personal Android device. While others will be able to download it from the Google Play Store, the Boost+ app will come pre-installed on all HTC 10 handsets.
The HTC Boost+ app is similar to that of Samsung’s Smart Manager app. If you’re not familiar with it, it is developed to lighten the smartphone by all means whether its the Battery, RAM, Security or the Storage. The HTC Boost+ has similar characteristics to that of Samsung’s Smart Manager, but it also includes other options as well. Do take note that not all options will be available for all smartphones. For instance, the Game Battery Booster option will be available to users with HTC devices and not others.
    Advertisements

The HTC Boost+ app includes six major options constituting the Boost, Game Battery Booster, Manage Apps, Clear Junk, Settings and Lock Apps. The Boost option will allow users to clear unnecessary apps that takes a lot of RAM. The Game Battery Booster will allow users to change the display resolution when you’re playing a game. This will ultimately save battery. Manage Apps will obviously manage apps as per your preferences. The Clear Junk option kills all files that you don’t need or use, like temporary files or cache memory. The Lock Apps option is viable if you don’t want strangers to peep into apps on your device. The Settings app will initiate general settings for your device.
Mirror Your Android Device, Control It From Your PC / Mac Without Rooting

The Boost+ app is not available on the Google Play Store just yet, however, HTC says that it will be available pretty soon. It is definitely a great app to have on all Android devices and HTC has done a good job in not restricting it to the HTC branded devices alone.
What do you guys think about the HTC Boost+ app? Will you be giving it a swirl once it’s here? Share your thoughts in the comments.
