    The Android 5.0 Lollipop Review

Google has been very busy with their expansion of Android as a platform this year. At Google IO we saw the announcement of endeavors like Android TV and Android Auto. But the stars of the show were a preview of the next version of Android, code named Android L, and Google's new Material Design principles for interface design across all of their products. In the years since Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich released, we've seen the launch of Jellybean and KitKat, but both of these versions were very iterative improvements upon 4.0 and had equally iterative version numbers with Jellybean being major versions 4.1 through 4.3 and KitKat being 4.4. Lollipop is given the major version number of 5.0, and it's quite fitting as it's arguably the biggest advancement to Android in a long time. It comes with an entirely new interface based on Material Design, a new application runtime, and many new features that I could not hope to summarize in this paragraph.
It can be difficult to begin a review of Android, as the definition of what Android is can be very dynamic. Android as an operating system that performs a set of functions is fairly well defined, but it's nearly impossible to define what Android looks like based on how it appears on most smartphones. The interface that Google has created for Android has matured greatly from its original iterations, but OEMs continue to put their own interfaces on top of Android to differentiate their devices. What applications are part of Android is also an interesting question. We can look to what applications are included in AOSP, but truth be told even Nexus users with "stock Android" aren't really getting an AOSP experience.
That may not be a bad thing for users, because many AOSP applications are quite bare compared to the Google applications that have superseded them. However, it poses a problem when deciding what should be discussed in a review of Android, and it has implications relating to how much of "Android" truly is open source. Google has also moved many applications over to Google Play so applications can be updated independently of the operating system, which bypasses many of the concerns about fragmentation from the days when application updates would come with Android updates that a user might never get. This adds an additional level of consideration when deciding which of these Google Play applications should be considered part of Android and discussed during a review.

Galaxy S5 handsets in Poland start receiving Android 5.0 Lollipop

We knew that the Android 5.0 Lollipop update was going to be rolling out to the Galaxy S5 soon, but it looks like those based in Poland, are enjoying the deliciously-named mobile OS update to their handset.

SamMobile has been reporting that the new OTA update being version G900FXXU1BNL2 has been getting blasted to SM-G900F models of the Galaxy S5 in Poland. We should see Lollipop reaching other Galaxy S5 handsets throughout Europe in the coming weeks, and hopefully throughout the world in the coming months.

Android Lollipop is currently installed on 2.1 percent of devices

Android Lollipop adoption is crawling along pretty slowly, having been installed on just 2.1 per cent of devices since it was released at the start of last month. According to sources, this figure has been “flat-lining for some time”, having only grown by 0.15 per cent since the start of November.
These numbers come from ‘Crittercism’, a mobile application performance management firm, which spoke to The Inquirer after Google decided not to include Android 5.0 in its monthly distribution figures. By comparison, Android 4.4 KitKat is currently installed on 33.9 per cent of devices, while the much older Jelly Bean version can be found on 48.7 per cent.

Crittercism notes that Lollipop’s measly 2.1 per cent is a figure that has been flat lining for a while. The reason for this is likely the issues Android 5.0 has been suffering, which would also explain why some devices have yet to receive the update. It might also explain why the Nexus 6 isn’t widely available currently.
Despite the issues, iOS 8 still had a larger crash rate than Lollipop. Currently, Lollipop has a crash rate of 2.26 per cent, while Apple’s latest version of iOS had a rate of 2.75 per cent.

AirDroid 3 is out, access your Android smartphone from your desktop

If you've been using AirDroid: great, if not, you might want to check it out. AirDroid 3 is now out, a piece of software that allows you to access, and use your Android-powered devices from your desktop.

Sand Studio has announced that it has released AirDroid 3, its latest and greatest update to AirDroid that has one very big new trick up its sleeve: a native app. AirDroid can still be used from your web browser, but with a native application out now, you have a big choice. There are some features that you should know about, which might swing your decision-making process:

    • Files: Transfer between a computer and an Android device.
    • SMS: Receive and reply to SMS.
    • Notification mirroring: Android app notifications are pushed to the desktop in real-time.
    • Calls: Get incoming call alerts and reject calls with a message.
    • Contacts: Manage contacts.
    • Air Mirror (mirrors an Android device's display so any app can be used on a computer)

Right now it seems the desktop app isn't working for some, myself included, throwing up errors whenever I go to sign in. There are countless people on AirDroid's Google+ page complaining about it, so I'm not alone it seems.

Google removes any and all Pirate Bay related apps from Play Store

Google has removed The Pirate Bay Proxy, The Pirate Bay Mirror, PirateApp, and The Pirate Bay Premium from the Google Play Store, e-mailing the respective developers behind the apps telling them their precious applications had been removed.

Torrent Freak reported: "Another drastic move came today when Google began removing many Pirate Bay related apps from its Play store. The apps in question include "The Pirate Bay Proxy," "The Pirate Bay Premium," "The Pirate Bay Mirror" and "PirateApp"." The reason for the removal of these apps is a bit tricky, as there were not any DMCA takedown notices

Google Takes Out The Trash, Jettisons Pirate Bay Apps From Play Store

Google has ramped up its efforts to distance itself from sites and services that are known to engage in or otherwise promote copyright infringement. Earlier this year, Google retooled its search algorithm so that it would sink search results associated with copyright infringement, and now the Mountain View company has begun pulling apps from its Play Store that are associated with Pirate Bay, one of the most popular hangouts on the web for pirates.

According to TorrentFreak, Google showed at least four Pirate Bay-related apps the door so far. They include The Pirate Bay Proxy, The Pirate Bay Premium, The Pirate Bay Mirror, and PirateApp. These are basically mobile friendly GUIs of the torrent site, though The Pirate Bay Proxy also came with proxy management tools to help users circumvent tracking their true whereabouts.

The developer of The Pirate Bay Proxy took issue with his app's removal and filed an appeal with Google, which it has already denied. His stance is that it doesn't do anything markedly different than any browser out there, including Chrome -- it just points people to working proxy sites and then behaves like a normal browser.

Google updates Hangouts for Android with new smart features and video filters

This morning in France at the LeWeb conference, VP of Product for Google+ Bradley Horowitz announced some new features coming to Hangouts for Android. The additions are coming by way of a new update, and include a number of minor aesthetic changes as well some more substantial ones.
Hangouts users on Android will now have a whole new list of stickers available (16 pages of them to be exact), along with the use of basic video filters like Sepia and black and white (among others), similar to what is found on the desktop app.

Outside of the those additions, we are also getting some new smart features integrated right into chats. While there was already location-based features available, Hangouts will now prompt users with a map and pin when it detects a contact asking where you are.
Other new features include a “last seen” timestamp so it is easy to tell whether or not a contact is online or not and a handy importing feature to move all of the contacts on your smartphone into Hangouts

Custom watch faces finally arrive on Android Wear

Custom watch faces are one of the biggest draws of Android Wear but up to this point, developers have been on their own (undocumented APIs) when it comes to creating new ones. That’s led to some pretty crummy creations but fortunately, Google's latest Android Wear update includes an official watch face API.
The search giant has also created a new section in the Play Store specifically for watch faces so it’ll be easy for Android Wear users to find the dozens of new watch faces available for download.

What you’ll find there will vary wildly from watch faces featuring Pac-Man and Plants vs. Zombies to classier options from Rebecca Minkof and Hugh Turvey. Pricing varies depending on watch face with several being offered free of charge.
Android Wear in general also gets several new features and abilities. For example, users can now quickly bring back a card that they accidentally dismissed. Tapping on the watch face now brings up a recently used actions list and you can swipe down from the top of the screen to access various settings.

A new Theater Mode lets you keep the screen off and mute vibrations when in a dark room. Conversely, Sunlight Mode boosts the screen’s brightness to its maximum value to assist viewing in brightly-lit environments.

    Sim, safety issues aside...
