Samsung: Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 runs too hot for Galaxy S6

A recent Bloomberg report, citing people with direct knowledge of the matter, claims that Samsung has decided to drop Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 chip from its next flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S6, due to overheating problems during testing.
Samsung is said to be using its own Exynos microprocessors in the next version of the Galaxy S smartphone instead, in a bid to boost its own processor-making division and to become more self-reliant. This issue may be damaging for Qualcomm's 2015 prospects, with the company already guiding for weaker-than-usual annual revenue growth in its five-year outlook issued in November, reports Reuters. Samsung is one of Qualcomm's top customers, with many of its best-selling handsets powered by a Snapdragon SoC.

The US chipmaking company is expected to provide Samsung with a new version of the Snapdragon chip in March, the WSJ reports, though this updated version may arrive too late for deployment in Samsung's next flagship phone. The Samsung Galaxy S6 unveiling is expected as early as March. On the other hand, LG has already announced plans to use the Snapdragon 810 CPU, having publicly stated that it has had no overheating problems related to Qualcomm's premier 20mm SoC.
"I am very much aware of the various concerns in the market about the (Snapdragon) 810, but the chip's performance is quite satisfactory," said LG's vice president for mobile product planning, Woo Ram-chan, at a press event for the company's G Flex 2 smartphone.

The G Flex 2 curved-screen smartphone is scheduled to start selling in South Korea on 30th Jan, and Woo explains that internal tests of the handset, powered by the chip in question, showed acceptable heat emission levels. "I don't understand why there is an issue over heat," he said.
Choi Yong-su, an LG smartphone development a vice president, went on to add that "heat levels don't depend entirely on the CPU (mobile processor) but also on how the phone's internal cooling system is designed," slyly digging at Samsung's smartphone designs. He highlights that the G Flex 2 was designed to show optimised performance using the new Snapdragon chip, with improvements made to contain heat emission levels.
For now, the technical issues remain undefined. Whilst it is possible that Samsung's overheating problem was related to other facets of its smartphone design, it is also entirely possible that Qualcomm has already fixed the issue Samsung identified, but could not provide enough chips in time to meet its partner's production schedule.

Qualcomm To Modify Snapdragon 810 For Samsung’s Galaxy S6

A while back we heard some bad news when it comes to Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S6 flagship, and given the amount of Galaxy S6 news that has been surfacing these days, that really is saying something. According to sources, Samsung had reportedly been facing several heating issues with the Snapdragon 810 during testing of the Galaxy S6, which led to the Korean manufacturer abandon Qualcomm’s SoC altogether on its initial batches of the Galaxy S6 However, looks like Qualcomm’s not ready to go down without a fight.
Qualcomm To Make Design Changes For The Snapdragon 810 For Samsung

The Wall Street Journal is reporting today that Qualcomm is now considering to make design changes on its Snapdragon 810. These changes come after reports that Korean manufacturing giant Samsung was considering eliminating Qualcomm’s top SoC from its upcoming flagship smartphone. Qualcomm will working towards solving the heat emission issues on the Snapdragon 810, and will reportedly have a solution for Samsung by this March.

Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy S6 this March at a dedicated unpacked event alongside the Mobile World Congress which will be held in Barcelona. The Galaxy S6 is expected to come with several changes and upgrades on board, including design and specification upgrades. The smartphone is expected to be launched in two variants, one with a regular display and the other with a curved display on both sides similar to the one found on the Galaxy Note Edge. If Qualcomm’s design changes turn out to be successful, then the Galaxy S6 will be launched with the Snapdragon 810 and Samsung’s in-house Exynos SoC.
Both the Snapdragon 810 and the Exynos are octa-core CPUs and should end up giving the Galaxy S6 quite a quite hefty performance punch. In addition, a 20 MP rear camera and a 5.1 inches QHD Super AMOLED display are also expected to make it on board the flagship. So stay tuned, we’ll let you know as this develops. Let us know what you think in the comments section.

Qualcomm said to be working on updated Snapdragon 810 chipset for the Galaxy S6

Qualcomm is expected to provide Samsung with an updated version of its Snapdragon 810 SoC in March, according to the Wall Street Journal. The news comes in the wake of a report that Samsung had decided not to use the chipset in its upcoming flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S6, due to overheating issues.
This new report notes that it isn't yet clear whether the new version of the chip would arrive in time for use in the S6, which is set to be unveiled on the sidelines of this year's Mobile World Congress in March. If it doesn't, Samsung plans to use its own SoC in the phone -- the preliminary Bloomberg report had noted that the S6 is expected to feature Samsung’s most advanced SoC.
The Snapdragon 810 processor is already used inside other products such as LG's upcoming G Flex 2 and Xiaomi's recently unveiled Mi Note Pro phablet, and it is key on Qualcomm’s sales plans for the year. At the CES earlier this month, the San Diego-based company's President Derek Aberle had said the chipset has good traction with handset manufacturers. “We feel like we are on track with the 810.”
For its part, LG has clarified that it has found no issues with the Qualcomm SoC, claiming that the chip's performance is quite satisfactory. “Heat levels don’t depend entirely on the CPU (mobile processor) but also on how the phone’s internal cooling system is designed,” said Choi Yong-su, a vice president for the company’s smartphone development.

Snapdragon 810 Does Not “Overheat”; Samsung Looking To Enter Chip War

Apparently, Samsung is ditching Snapdragon 810 processor for its next flagship, and the cause is- once more apparently, the overheating issues. Perhaps the use of Exynos processor in Galaxy S6 instead of Snapdragon 810 chip may not be as a result of the overheating issues. However, it might be because, Samsung wants a war with the world’s renowned mobile processor designing company, and also to lead chip making industry with its better-quality 14 nm fabrication process.
Samsung is Ditching Snapdragon 810 Processor For Reasons More Than ‘Heating’ Issues

Well, according to Korean media and alleged industrial sources, both Snapdragon 810 and Exynos7420 are outfitted within flagship phones. However, for now, Samsung is sticking to Exynos 7420 in Galaxy S6 and Qualcomm is in business with Xiaomi Mi Note and LG G Flex 2. After catastrophe with Exynos 5 series overheating, Samsung brought into play its own processor line scarcely. However, now it has returned back in full force with Exynos 7420, which will be outfitted in Galaxy S6.

As far as overheating of Snapdragon 810 is concerned, Qualcomm is still quiet about this rumor. However, its key partner (LG) has shown up to fight for the Big Q’s honor. As per LG’s president, the chip’ recital is fairly satisfactory. LG has recently used Qualcomm’s chip Snapdragon 810 in its latest LG G Flex 2. Apart from this, some other big releases of 2015 such as Sony Xperia Z4, HTC One M9, likewise broadcasts from Android OEMs and Microsoft will also see Snapdragon 810 chipset. These releases will definitely make Samsung’s claim of overheating issues with Snapdragon 810 chipset, fictitious. Though, talks about Snapdragon 810 overheating issues started last year, when reports surfaced alleging the chipset’s overheating at some voltage levels, however, till then, apart from Samsung, no other Qualcomm’s partner raised the overheating issue in their devices. Now, to analyze the difference between Exynos 7420 and Snapdragon 810, we have to wait, though, one thing is sure- it will be fabricated on an advance 14nm process.
We all know about Snapdragon 810 chipset’s optimization with streaming, 4K decoding and encoding. However, we have to wait and see how Exynos does justice to these features. Tell us what you think about this in the comment section. We will keep you updated in the meantime.

Fixed Or Not, The 20nm Snapdragon 810 Will Have To Compete With The 14nm Exynos 7

After many reports that Samsung is not happy with the thermal performance of the Snapdragon 810, Qualcomm seemed willing to update the chip specifically for Samsung. That updated chip, even if completely fixed, may not even arrive on time for the Galaxy S6, though.
However, there's an even bigger problem for Qualcomm. Even a fixed 20nm Snadragon 810 may not be enough to compete against Samsung's upcoming 14nm FinFET Exynos 7 Octa (7420).

According to a new report from Korea, Samsung's Exynos 7420 can have its Cortex A57 cores clocked at 2.1 GHz, while the optimal clock speed for the 20nm Snapdragon 810, which also uses Cortex A57 cores, is only 1.6 GHz.
Samsung may be trying to get the Snapdragon 810 as close as possible in frequency to its Exynos 7420 in order to have more performance equality between its U.S. model and its international model. The problem there is that Snapdragon 810 is not a 14nm FinFET chip, so it may not be able to handle such high frequencies. Samsung needs to make them closer in performance, otherwise its American customers may revolt against the company for putting a significantly lower-performance chip in their version of the Galaxy S6.
Samsung made such concessions before with the Galaxy Note 4 when it made its Exynos 5433 work only in 32-bit mode, to give it a similar performance profile to that of the Snapdragon 805. This time, the company may not be willing to do the same. The difference may be too big, and it wouldn't benefit anyone except Qualcomm to downgrade its own Exynos chip to match the performance of the lower-clocked Snapdragon 810.
Qualcomm still retains a significant advantage in the application processor market with the integration of modems into its SoCs. Samsung can now build modems as well, but they're not integrated with the processor. At 14nm FinFET, it's likely less of an issue of power consumption and more of a time-to-market and cost issue.
Right now everything points to Samsung being ready to deliver Galaxy S6 devices with Exynos 7 and LTE, so the time to market won't be an issue for Samsung. In fact, its own modem was rumored to be Cat. 10, while Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 will only use Cat. 9 (after being upgraded recently from Cat. 6), so the company's modem could even be considered ahead of Qualcomm's modem in certain ways. Because Samsung is the one making the processor and the modem, the cost issue is also not a big one, although it may be when trying to sell it to other OEMs. Integrated processors and modems should be cheaper when built together instead of separately.
Samsung is poised to do well with its chip and foundry divisions this year, according to ET News' industry sources. Most of the manufacturing for the Apple A9 chip is rumored to go back to Samsung this year, thanks to its 14nm FinFET process being slightly ahead in both performance and time-to-market compared to TSMC's 16nm FinFET. The new ARMv8-based Exynos 7 chip is also seen as a strong and compelling offer at the high-end, mainly because Samsung managed to build it on its own 14nm process, while Qualcomm is only able to use 20nm right now for its Snapdragon 810.
Qualcomm should be able to build the Snapdragon 820 (the 810's successor) on 14nm later this year, using Samsung's process technology. A few months of lead time may be enough for Samsung to steal some of Qualcomm's biggest customers though, if the company decides to compete directly with Qualcomm by selling Exynos 7 to other companies. Even if Samsung doesn't do that, taking Qualcomm chips out of its own popular high-end devices could significantly impact Qualcomm's revenues in the long term.
From a strategic point of view, it makes sense for Samsung to use a chip that's not from Qualcomm, as long as it's competitive enough (which it may be, according to early reports), regardless of who makes it. Almost all smartphone makers except Apple use Qualcomm chips at the high-end right now. The processor is still a significant feature even in today's high-powered smartphones, and virtually all companies use the same chips.
Samsung, more than anyone, as the smartphone market leader, would probably want to differentiate itself through the processor it uses. Utilizing its own chip would allow it to better integrate it with its software, offer more extensive support for it, and also use more cutting-edge process technologies, months ahead of its competitors.
The first device to use the 14nm Exynos 7420 will be the Galaxy S6, which is supposed to come out this March.

LG denies it is suing over fire breathing Snapdragon

    wikicommons

    It makes no sense

Smartphone maker LG has denied that it is planning to sue Qualcomm over rumoured plans it's going to redesign its high-end Snapdragon 810 chip for the impending Samsung Galaxy S6.

Samsung said that it was not going to use the Snapdragon 810 because it tended to overheat, and Qualcomm offered to tweak it.
LG, which used the 810 in its used in its G Flex 2 model, initially denied the chip had any problems. However it was later rumoured to be preparing to sue Qualcomm.
The Korea Times stated that the company would not stand for such a change. However this rumour was inconsistent with LG's earlier "no problems with the chip, nothing to see here" stance.
Ken Hong, Global Communications Director for LG said that rumors regarding LG taking legal action against Qualcomm are unfounded and a complete fabrication of the facts. "Given the source of this rumor, we're surprised it's being taken seriously at all."
The original post from the Korea Times has since been taken down.

LG may sue Qualcomm over special Galaxy S6 Snapdragon 810

Apparently LG may sue Qualcomm if the company chooses to provide Samsung with a revised version of the Snapdragon 810 processor for its upcoming flagship device, the Galaxy S6. Samsung believes that the current Snapdragon 810 chip runs too hot and is therefore planning to use its own made Exynos chip in the Galaxy S6.
However, rumors suggested that Qualcomm didn’t want to let Samsung go without a fight and planned to issue the company with a new Snapdragon 810 with improved temperature management capabilities. LG, who is planning to use the regular Snapdragon 810 inside of the G Flex 2 smartphone, doesn’t seem to like the idea of Samsung getting special treatment.

Reports circulating the Korean media suggest that LG will take legal action if it provides Samsung with an updated processor. LG has previously spoken out against Samsung’s allegations that there is a problem with the chip, claiming that its performance is “quite satisfactory”.
If the regular Snapdragon 810 isn’t good enough for Samsung, then LG may have a hard time convincing potential customers that the G Flex 2 will be fine,

Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 causes company to lose a 'large customer'

According to Qualcomm's Q4 earnings release, we have learned a few things. We've seen that the chip giant has revised its profits estimations to between $26 billion and $28 billion, compared to $26.8 billion and $28.8 billion.

But, it was something else stated in this release, that should have people opening their eyes. The company said "Expectations that our Snapdragon 810 processor will not be in the upcoming design cycle of a large customer's flagship device". We would dare say that this would be the Samsung Galaxy S6 not using its Snapdragon 810 processor, with the South Korean giant being a "large customer", something most could agree on.

Qualcomm admits it has lost a big client- probably Samsung

The rumor mill has been churning out quite a bit of information on Samsung’s plans for the Galaxy S6 recently. However, Qualcomm may have indirectly confirmed that the Galaxy S6 will not use a Snapdragon processor, as it has admitted that it has lost a big client.
As part of its first earnings report of 2015, Qualcomm said that there were “expectations that our Snapdragon 810 processor will not be in the upcoming design cycle of a large customer’s flagship device”. This quote ties in well with recent rumors that Samsung was not happy with the Snapdragon 810′s heat management capabilities and would instead opt to use its own made Exynos CPU for the Galaxy S6.

    Source: Concept Phones
Qualcomm gave the above statement to explain why there was a dip in estimated future profit, which is understandable, Samsung are a big client to lose, so much so that Apple keeps going back to them for its own iPhone processors.
We have seen early benchmarks of the supposed Galaxy S6 processor, showing some decent performance numbers when stacked up against early results from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 flagship.
Samsung has used Exynos chips in its devices for some time now, in-fact some variants of the Galaxy S5 use one. It will be interesting to see how the final version of the Galaxy S6 stacks up against the competition, which are still largely expected to use Snapdragon 810 processors.

Qualcomm posts record revenue, loses high-profile design

Mobile chipmaker Qualcomm reported its quarterly financial results yesterday. For the three months ended December 28, its first fiscal quarter of 2015, the firm posted record revenue of $7.1 billion. Qualcomm made $2 billion in profit, a 5% increase over the same period last year. Here's the full breakdown:
    Q1'15 Q1'14 Change
    Revenue $7.1 billion $6.6 billion up 7%
Operating income $2.1 billion $1.5 billion up 38%
Net income $2.0 billion $1.9 billion up 5%
Despite the good news, Qualcomm cut its outlook for the current quarter based on "expectations that [its] Snapdragon 810 processor will not be in the upcoming design cycle of a large customer's flagship device." Although the customer isn't named, Samsung reportedly dropped the 64-bit chip from its upcoming Galaxy S6 smartphone due to overheating issues.
During the conference call following the earnings release, CEO Steven Mollenkopf said the Snapdragon 810 is "working the way we expected it to work." The chip is still coming to over 60 devices, he added, and there don't appear to be any other high-profile defectors.
As Re/code points out, the Snapdragon 810 uses off-the-shelf ARM hardware instead of Qualcomm's custom Krait design; it combines quad Cortex-A57 and -A53 cores in big.LITTLE arrangement. Mollenkopf said a chip with Qualcomm's own custom 64-bit CPU core will sample before the end of the year, but it's unclear when that SoC will be ready to ship in actual devices.

Mais uma que pode comprar a AMD em promoção.
Bem, já compraram a divisão Imageon, a preço de saldo, em 2008. Seria caricato no mínimo, mas não me acredito.

Upcoming Microsoft Lumia flagship will pack Snapdragon 810

Qualcomm has published a press release with details of upcoming smartphones that will be powered by its latest and greatest Snapdragon 810 SoC. The Qualcomm PR move seems to have been precipitated by a share price fall, caused by reports of Samsung dropping the powerful Snapdragon 810 processor from its upcoming Galaxy S6 smartphone - due to it causing overheating problems.
The Qualcomm press release is entitled "Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 Processor Powers Premium Tier Mobile Experiences of 2015." It includes a good few hints about upcoming smartphone designs which will be packing the new SoC , several of which read like testimonials.

The LG Flex2 as we already know comes with a Snapdragon 810 inside – and no overheating issues. It is also revealed that Xiaomi, Motorola Mobility, Sony Mobile, OPPO and Microsoft are all prepping 'Premium Tier' smartphones using the chip.
Microsoft has been releasing quite a few smartphones under its own brand recently but they have been concentrated at the low end of the spectrum so it will be very interesting to see what the first Lumia smartphone flagship under the Microsoft brand is like. Now, at least we know that something is brewing and it will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor.

Microsoft's Juha Kokkonen, a general manager for portfolio and product management, wrote a little about Microsoft and Qualcomm's long standing collaboration (all Lumia smartphone have been Qualcomm powered so far). Kokkonen added "We look forward to continuing this relationship to deliver best in class Lumia smartphones, powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 processors, and offer an unprecedented combination of processing power, rich multimedia, high-performance graphics and wireless connectivity for our customers".
Qualcomm went on to say that there are "currently in excess of 60 devices," that are going to be powered by the new chip. Hopefully we will see plenty of them at the upcoming MWC. In the meantime below is a reminder of the key specifications that the 20nm Snapdragon 810 SoC brings to your device.
