    SeaSonic Platinum-760 Power Supply Review

    SeaSonic renamed its renowned X series to the Platinum family. These are the company's high-end power supplies, all of them sporting Platinum-rated efficiency and output up to 1200W. Some of the lower-wattage models are even fan-less.

    The Platinum-760 is a mid-range member of the series, unsurprisingly sustaining up to 760W. Typical of SeaSonic, the PSU sports hybrid fan control, which can be turned on or off by means of a switch. In Normal mode, the fan runs continuously, whereas it runs only when needed in Hybrid mode.
    This 760W power supply's workmanship is impeccable, similar to the other Platinum-class contenders we've already looked at. In the same vein, neither the fully modular cabling approach nor the single-rail design surprise us. Expect the +12V rail to deliver up to 63A.

    Overclockers UK has announced that it will be selling the world’s first consumer 2000W 80 PLUS Platinum modular power supply on the market, created by Super Flower in collaboration with Ian ’8Pack’ Parry, the record holding overclocker.

    Be Quiet! Dark Power Pro 10 650W & 850W PSU Review

    Introduction

    be quiet! is a German company that is slowly making their way into the North American market. As its name suggests (and yes, the correct spelling is all lowercase), the company specializes in creating low-noise components for PCs, mainly cooling and power related. We had the chance to see some of their new products, including their first case, at CES. The last of their products that we reviewed was the Power Zone 850W power supply, which was a bit disappointing in that it was unable to catch up with the competition and not quite quiet under heavy loads.
    Our review did not phase the company, who sent us samples of their best PSU series, the Dark Power Pro, for another review. This series is strictly aimed towards enthusiasts and advanced users, seeking the very best parts available for their systems. It consists of six units, ranging from 550W up to 1200W. be quiet! supplied us with samples of their 650W and 850W models, as their reasonable power output makes them the "best sellers" of the series. However, there are large variations between the models of the series, which can be seen from the fact that only the 850W unit is 80 Plus Platinum certified – the rest of the Dark Power Pro 10 units all have a 80 Plus Gold certification. As such, we expect the two units that we will review today to be significantly different, even though they are part of the same series.

    Packaging and Bundle

    Both Dark Power Pro 10 units share a virtually identical packaging, with the obvious differences being the power rating and the 80 Plus certification badge. It is a very professional looking, sturdy cardboard box, with thick layers of polystyrene foam offering sufficient shipping protection. Ample information on the features, specifications and even the length of the cables is printed on the back of the box.
    be quiet! treats the Dark Power Pro 10 as the top-tier units they are supposed to be and provides a wealthy bundle with these units. Inside the box we find a manual, the typical AC power cable, five black screws, five thumbscrews, several cable ties, six quality cable straps, a jumper for the OCK mode, and a switch with an LED mounted on an expansion slot cover.
    We should note that there are five screws and five thumbscrews, even though that the PSU requires four, because be quiet! offers a spare just in case one gets lost. These screws are longer than typical 3M case screws, which are not sufficiently long for the proper installation of the power supply.
    Regarding the OCK mode, it is a feature that the Dark Power Pro 10 units offer, allowing the user to "merge" the four 12V lines into one. This can be done by using the provided jumper, which will lock the Dark Power Pro 10 to a single rail OCP monitoring mode, or by installing the expansion cover with the switch, allowing for on-the-fly mode changes. Obviously, the power output of the unit does not get any more powerful; OCK simply overrides the stock OCP (over current protection) configuration, ceasing the monitoring of separate 12V rails and monitoring the entire 12V line as a whole.
    For safety reasons, the "single 12V rail" mode is not allowed by the ATX design guide, especially with units this powerful. That is because the OCP will not be triggered if the whole output of the unit is going through a single wire, in which case the cable or the connector can easily melt, potentially even starting a fire. However, the ever-increasing power requirements of modern equipment (especially GPUs) could cause the OCP to trigger even when the PSU itself could handle the load, which has led most high-end PSU manufacturers to ignore the safety norm and go with single 12V rail monitoring.
    The cables of the Dark Power Pro 10 are all sleeved and with color-coded wires, which may be a bit too typical for a PSU of this class. It would have been good for be quiet! to at least use black wires or a more distinct sleeving. Five extra cable straps, which are simple and straight unlike those provided separately in the bundle, hold half of the cable packs together and can be repurposed after the PSU has been installed inside a case.

    Antec EDGE 750W Power Supply Unit Review

    Many people that i know often wonder the reason as to why most manufacturers are producing fully modular power supply units lately when its granted that people will be using the 20/24pin power cable either way. Well since this is considered one of the main/top features of such PSU models usually the reason stands out in both the manufacturers websites and the packages so we all know that they main reason they choose to do so is as a "failsafe" (future proof) just in case the power standard changes in the near future from the current 24pin one to something newer and better so instead of getting a new PSU and thus spending twice as much in the long run consumers will just be required to get a new power cable. A few months back with us we had the latest EDGE 550W fully modular PSU by Antec and since we were very satisfied with its performance we just had to take a look at the top of the line 750W model.

    Antec released the EDGE line of power supply units roughly 6 months ago and all of them including the 750W variant which we'll be testing today are 80 Plus Gold Certified and feature a fully modular design, 16pin power connectors (future-proof design), 135mm fluid-dynamic bearing fans, thermal managers, two high-current +12v rails, Japanese made capacitors, flat "stealth" black modular cables and an assortment of industrial grade protections (Antec calls this feature the CircuitShield) such as over current protection (OCP), over voltage protection (OVP), no load operation (NLO), short circuit protection (SCP), over power protection (OPP), over temperature protection (OTP) and surge & Inrush Protection (SIP). However unlike the 550W variant which had two +12v rails which could use up to 98.2% of its total power output with up to 30A each the two +12V rails of the 750W variant can use up to 99.2% with up to 40A each. Of course the entire EDGE line is covered by Antec’s 5 year warranty and since we all did like the 550W model it's time for us to see how the 750W variant does.

    LEPA MX F1 600W Power Supply Review

    Introduction

    Enermax Technology Corporation is a company that is well known in the world of power supplies and general computing alike. Founded in 1990, Enermax has made a name for itself by providing solid performing power supplies, among other computer components, and accessories. Enermax' current lines of power supplies encompass a wide range of products targeted at various market segments including the Platimax, MaxRevo, Revolution87+, Triathlor FC, Triathlor ECO, NAXN ADV, and NAXN series. In addition to being a retail presence with its Enermax brand power supplies, Enermax Technology Corporation used to be one of the few real OEM designers of power supplies. Its power supplies however, have only rarely shown up under other labels including Grow Up Japan, Sapphire, and its house brand LEPA. Today we are looking at our fifth power supply from the Enermax’ house brand LEPA. This particular model MX F1 600W (N600-SB) which is produced by CWT as Enermax no longer produces its LEPA branded power supplies.

    Channel Well Technology (CWT) was founded and began manufacturing power supplies in 1993. Since 1993 Channel Well Technology products have shown up under various guises including Antec, Xclio, 2theMax, CWT, Thermaltake, Xigmatek, Enermax, and Corsair. While most familiar to our US users from when CWT used to provide OEM services for Antec, CWT is one of the more complete OEM manufacturers as it has a fairly high level of vertical integration providing transformers all the way up to its well designed independently regulated SMPS. However, CWT has been stretching out over the last few years and is providing OEM services for a number of brands as today’s unit demonstrates.




    Gentlemen, Start Your Engines!

    The LEPA MX F1 600W is just the fifth power supply we have seen from the LEPA brand. It is also the smallest capacity unit we have seen so far from LEPA at 600W. Those previous LEPA units we have seen have been rebadged Enermax units except for the B850 which was from Sirfa. Today, the LEPA MX F1 600W is not an Enermax unit or a Sirfa unit being rebadged as a LEPA unit but rather a CWT product. Given that the quality we have seen from CWT has been somewhat more variable than what we have seen from Enermax, this certainly leaves us with a bit more apprehension than if this was simply another rebranded Enermax unit being sold for less under the LEPA banner. Before we move on though, let's see what LEPA has to say about this unit:

    f you are building a new rig with high power demands then our review today will be one you will not want to miss. The SuperFlower Leadex Titanium 1600W is designed with power sucking Crossfire and SLI rigs in mind.     Super Flower designs we have tested recently have scored extremely well. We recently reviewed the eVGA SuperNOVA P2 1200W and P2 1600W units – these utilise the Super Flower Leadex platform and both are incredible power supplies. The Super Flower Leadex Titanium 1600W power supply is long, measuring 150 x 86 x 220mm (WxHxD), so large cases with a lot of physical space need to be considered.

    Last month we took a look at SilverStone’s small form-factor power supply the SFX-600, which delivered 600 watts from a compact SFX enclosure. Today we are looking at SilverStone’s new Strider Gold ST1500-GS, which is a 1,500 watt ATX form-factor power supply. The Strider Gold 1500W PSU is fully modular and built for high efficiency operation. What makes the ST1500-GS unique is the relatively short enclosure, which is only 180mm (7.1”) deep!

    There are currently five different models available in the Strider Gold S Series, which include the ST55F-G, ST65F-G, ST75-GS, ST85F-GS, and ST1500-GS.     Thermaltake Toughpower 1500W Gold PSU Unboxing & Overview

    Thermaltake has been making power supplies for quite some time. They have models for all segments of the market, from entry level to PSUs that meet even the most extreme enthusiast’s demands. In fact, we’d venture to say, if you’ve been building systems for a while, odds are you’ve used a Thermaltake PSU at one point or another. Today we have a close up look at Thermaltake’s latest behemoth of a PSU, something that is definitely built for the enthusiast in mind, the Toughpower 1500W Gold. 1500 watts of power … seems like a lot right? Overkill, a waste of money, etc? Well under most circumstances, you’d be right. However, when dealing with ultra-high-end systems and high overclocks, a 1500 watt PSU is a lot less crazy than you’d think. Currently the top performing GPUs consume somewhere in the neighborhood of about 250-300 watts each. Multiply that by 3 or 4, then add in a high-end CPU like the eight-core Intel i7-5960X, some water cooling and then to top it off, overclock everything to the max. You can now start to see why there is a market for such power. Even in overclocking competitions, it isn’t uncommon that competitors will use multiple high-power PSUs in this category to power a single system. FEATURES For this model, Thermaltake is utilizing Japanese capacitors for better stability and reliability. It is Haswell ready, ErP ready, semi-modular, and features 80 Plus Gold certification, ensuring high energy efficiency. (87-92% efficiency @ 20-100% load). It also features full support for both Nvidia’s SLI and AMD’s CrossFireX multi-GPU configurations. The quality of this unit also shows with their MTBF of 120,000 hrs minimum rating. It also features dual 12v rails for a total amperage output of 140A (70A each). The cables for the PSU are all flat for easier cable routing and better airflow through the chassis. And to top it all off it comes with a 5-year warranty. As Thermaltake’s highest power rated power supply, it also carries a hefty price tag at $339.99! PACKAGING AND ACCESSORIES Starting off with the packaging we can see they have gone with a dark black theme. On the front is a picture of the PSU. In print are some of the features and 1500W power rating to make this PSU stand out from the rest. On the back is more detailed information on the unit as well as a graph depicting the power efficiency over the load range based on both 115V and 230V inputs. As shown, if used with a 230V input, the PSU can function at over 90% efficiency. On the bottom of the box it just reiterates most of the main features from the front and back.

    Moving onto the inside of the box, we can see a quick guide and warranty papers, and a pouch to hold any leftover modular cables you may not need. The PSU is held within a 1″ thick layer of foam to ensure the product remains intact during transport. Below we can see it also comes with 4 zip-ties, 4 case screws, and a 6ft. power cable. Also we get a first glimpse at the modular cables. We can see that eight out of the 10, (yes you read that right) PCI-E connectors (6+2 pin) cables are modular and they come in pairs of two. These cables are 22″ in length. Also included are 16 SATA power connectors (5 pin), 4 per modular cable (34.5″). And there are 4 peripheral connectors (4 pin), 4 per modular cable (34.5″).

    They also include a 6″ PATA to FDD adapter for those who need it, pictured above to the right.

    FSP AURUM PT 1000W Power Supply Review

    Introduction

    FSP Group is one of the few actual power supply manufacturers and can be found providing OEM services for a number of other brands at various times including OCZ, Zalman, AOpen, Antec, SilverStone, Super Talent, Sigma, and many more. This wide distribution of power supplies by FSP is not surprising given that it has been in business since 1993 and is one of the top 10 producers of power supplies in the world. FSP is also regarded as a manufacturer of basic workhorse type power supplies that "just gets the job done," although some of its previous high powered computer power supplies have been plagued by power quality issues. Previously, we have reviewed a number of FSP power supplies that have been branded by others and over the years we have also reviewed a few of products branded by FSP itself. Today, we are again seeing a product that is spun off from FSP's AURUM series the AURUM PT 1000W (PT-1000FM).






    Is Platinum Really Better Than Gold?

    The FSP AURUM PT 1000W is the newest member of the AURUM series of power supplies from FSP. The last AURUM based power supply we saw was the AURUM PRO GOLD 1200 and that unit was a rather good unit at the time. That outcome was a considerable improvement over the previous FSP branded units we have seen before and since. So, today, we would hope that this unit will continue to follow in the footsteps of that previous AURUM product rather than the other FSP branded units we have seen that were not quite as good of products. Not just that, but if this unit is a real improvement over the previous AURUM PRO GOLD then we would expect to see this unit compete well among the best 1000W units we have seen to date. Before moving on to see if this unit is going to compete for top honors today, let’s see what FSP expects from this power supply:

    SilverStone SX600-G SFX Power Supply Review

    SilverStone's SX600-G is one of the most capable SFX PSUs you can buy. Six-hundred watts is a lot for this form factor, and today we are going find out if the company's offering is able to deliver its advertised power even in extreme conditions.

    SilverStone is one of the few manufacturers that shows great interest in small form-factor PSUs. Aside from the compact ATX power supplies its portfolio includes, the company also has an SFX series that includes five members with capacities ranging from 300 to 600W. The two lower-output models are 80 PLUS Bronze-certified, while all the rest meet the 80 PLUS Gold requirements. Today we're taking a detailed took at the family's flagship, the SX600-G.
    Since SilverStone also manufactures enclosures, it found out early that enthusiasts with small cases may need compact dimensions, but strong PSUs to support high-end components. With so many mini-ITX cases on the market, there are plenty of choices. On the other hand, there aren't a lot of SFX PSU options. That's doubly true for units with over 500W capacity exploiting a fully modular cabling design. So SilverStone practically plays alone in this arena. Fortunately, since it's quite experienced with the form factor in question, SilverStone is traditionally a trusted source for quality products. We're naturally expecting a lot out of the SX600-G, then, which we are going to put through extreme loads and hot environments. After all, inside a small chassis, temperatures can rise quickly.

    Besides 80 PLUS Gold-rated efficiency and fully modular cabling, the SX600-G also enables semi-fanless operation that is deactivated (according to SilverStone's specifications) once the supply's internal temperature reaches 45 degrees Celsius. It is amazing to see such a high-capacity SFX PSU using a fanless mode, and we were interested in checking this mode's performance in the real world. Surely high efficiency plays a key role in keeping thermal dissipation at low levels. But the airflow in this unit can't be optimal, since the large components needed to generate 600W take up so much room. We'd expect the result to be a quick increase to that target 45 °C threshold once the PSU is stressed.
    Specifications

    SilverStone's efficiency rating satisfies the 80 PLUS organization's Gold specification. That level still retains some prestige, although currently it comes third behind the 80 PLUS Platinum and Titanium certifications. To the best of our knowledge, there aren't any SFX PSUs available with higher than a Gold rating, and it definitely won't be easy to manufacture one.
    The SX600-G is fully modular and supports the sleep states (C6 and C7) that Intel's Haswell-based processors introduced. In addition, it is equipped with all basic protection features, though according to SilverStone's specifications, Over-Temperature Protection (OTP) isn't available; we consider that capability to be crucial.
    The maximum operating temperature at which this unit can deliver full power continuously is 40 °C, according to SilverStone. Taking into consideration the other technical specifications, we have to assume that it was hard to guarantee trouble-free operation under full load at 50 °C. However, we will follow our testing protocol that dictates full load and overload testing at 45 °C.
    As for cooling, the SX600-G uses a small, double ball-bearing fan, and SilverStone exploits a semi-passive mode to make this PSU quieter at light loads. The company states that the fan starts spinning only when its internal temperature exceeds 45 °C; we will check this by testing at ambient temperatures, since the conditions in our hotbox won't allow for conditions under 45 °C. Finally, SilverStone covers this supply with a three-year warranty -- a bit brief, in our opinion, for a PSU at this price point. We would prefer a five-year guarantee.

    PSU Testing Methodology
    Establishing an accurate load is critical to testing and evaluating a PC power supply. PCPerspective’s power supply test bench can place a precise DC load on the PSU under test. Each power supply is tested under controlled conditions up to its maximum rated load (at 40ºC), using both 115 VAC and 240 VAC line voltage. Our current suite of tests includes:

    EVGA 430W Power Supply Review


    Introduction


    As a company, EVGA was founded in 1999, and is well known in the DIY computer industry for its high performance video cards, motherboards, and other computer components. Recently, EVGA has expanded its product offerings to include power supplies which of course draws our interest to it today. Currently, EVGA has a few lines of power supplies with the majority being some variation on the SuperNOVA name and variously branded "SuperNOVA" or "SUPERNOVA."

    However, today’s EVGA 430W Power Supply (100-W1-0430-KR) is not labeled as part of the SuperNOVA lines and it is the smallest capacity power supply that EVGA offers in conjunction with HEC.

    HEC Group (Heirochi Electric Corporation) AKA Compucase Enterprise CO LTD is one of the oldest companies in the consumer SMPS business having been founded in 1979. By 1989 HEC had moved into case production, and then in 1997 it began producing SMPS. Today, HEC is one of the largest manufacturers of SMPS and its products can be found under the HEC brand, the CompuCase brand, and the Cougar brand, all of which are retail arms of HEC. In addition to its own brands, HEC has supplied power supplies in the past for Antec, Thermaltake, Xigmatek, and others. Generally, HEC has been known for its entry to mid-level products, but with the launch of some of its newer lines under the Cougar brand, it has moved into the high end enthusiast realm.




    How Low Can You Go and Still Get A Quality Entry Level PSU?


    Today’s EVGA 430W is the fifth power supply we have reviewed from EVGA. While previously the 500B was the smallest capacity power supply that EVGA offered, today's EVGA 430W is smaller than that unit. As the EVGA 430W is also related to the 500B, we already have some idea of what to expect from this unit. As before with the EVGA 500B, this will require us to readjust our expectations a bit since this unit is a very entry level product which is a category literally defined by compromises and this has been a brutal category of late. That said, we won't change our requirements (based on ATX12V specifications) for this unit to pass our testing today. So, before moving on, what does EVGA have to say about this product?

    When building on a budget, the EVGA 430W 80 PLUS is a great choice at a low cost. Supporting 34A on a single +12V rail provides more options without having to reduce your component requirements. Save space with the 430W's compact design, well-placed power switch and fully sleeved cables. The 430W offers the connections and protections needed for basic system builds. With a standard 3 year warranty and ultra quiet fan design the 430W will be a great asset for your next build on a budget.
    With little there of real substance, let’s move on and see what we can expect when a user purchases the EVGA 430W in retail in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.

    We spend most of our review time analysing ATX power supplies, however we wanted to break with tradition today and take a look at the new Seasonic TFX 350 watt unit. This tiny supply is fully modular and ships with 80 Plus Gold Certification – but can it deliver the high level of quality we expect from a Seasonic design?
