Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi Busted For Violating Taiwanese Privacy Rules

It seems that smartphones from Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, and other companies have violated Taiwan’s privacy laws by collecting and sending back user data to company servers. Back in September, Taiwan’s National Communications Commission launched an investigation regarding cyber security threat concerns over products from foreign manufacturers.
NCC vice chairman Yu Hsiao-Cheng spoke at a legislative session held on Thursday, revealing that the commission had discovered problems with 12 phone models. “Almost every one of them will register with their company’s server," he said, but didn’t expand upon any specific issues.
The investigation was launched in response to media reports that smartphones from Chinese firm Xiaomi Technology were collecting user data and sending it back to Chinese servers without users’ permission.

The vice chairman went on to say that the government would fine offending companies up to $6.43 million, or ban the selling of their devices in Taiwan, if the companies didn’t modify their handsets.

Apple Betting Big on India with Plans for 500 Stores

Apple is going after one of the largest smartphone market in the world by planning to open a total of 500 new stores in mid-to-small-sized cities and towns all over India according to reports from The Times of India. Apple already has a presence in many of the larger cities across India.

These new stores will be smaller in size and could range from 300 to 600 square feet against over 2,000-square-foot size of existing stores in bigger cities.

The Apple 'garage startup' history isn't exactly correct

Steve Jobs was said to begin his Apple enterprise in his parents garage, located in Los Altos, California. This 'birthplace' of Apple was conducted throughout the spring of 1976. However, Apple's original co-founder Steve Wozniak has just let slip a little more truth to this claim, stating that it's not exactly 100% correct that this dingy garage location was where the Apple I and Apple II products were designed, developed and eventually presented to the world.

In a chat with Bloomberg Businessweek, he told Brandon Lisy that "The garage is a bit of a myth", further commenting that "We did no designs there, no bread boarding, no prototyping, no planning of products" and "We did no manufacturing there. The garage didn't serve much purpose, except it was something for us to feel was our home".

Commenting on why garage start-ups are legendary in Silicon Valley and why they were such a necessity in the 70's and onward, he stated "We had no money. You have to work out of your home when you have no money".

So where exactly were these legendary systems produced? "Woz" let slip that "The work was being done - soldering things together, putting the chips together, designing them, drawing them on drafting tables - at my cubicle at Hewlett-Packard in Cupertino [California]. That was an incredible time. It let me do a lot of side projects, and it was five years to the summer of '75, when I built the Apple computer, the first one.

Former Apple executive jailed for selling company secrets

Former Apple executive, Paul S. Devine, who sold company secrets to suppliers has been hit with a $4.5 million fine and if that wasn’t bad enough, he will also have to serve a 1 year prison sentence for his crimes. The sentence was passed down in the San Jose federal court late last week.
This trial has been a long one, the former Apple employee had already pleaded guilty to wire fraud, conspiracy and money laundering over three years ago. The US Attorney’s office announced the penalty on Friday but declined to explain why it all took so long.

Devine could have faced up to 20 years in prison for his crimes so all things considered, it is safe to say that he got off fairly easy. The scheme he took part in earned him millions of dollars for passing along confidential information to Apple suppliers and manufacturers, who then used these secrets to negotiate better deals.

Bose products rumored to return to Apple Stores next week

After being ripped from Apple Store shelves not too long ago, Bose audio products are rumored to be making a return. iGen.fr, a French Apple website, has a source that said some Apple retail stores have been receiving shipments of Bose products, with orders from management to get them onto the shelves next week.

We still don't know why Apple removed Bose products from their shelves in the first place, but it most likely has something to do with its acquisition of Beats Electronics. Not only that, but the patent infringement that Bose pulled on Beats back in July, which would now obviously affect Apple.

Corrupt Apple Exec Sentenced To Prison

A year in prison for this guy and a $4.5 million fine seems pretty light considering he faced up to twenty years. Let the "bad apple" jokes begin.

Paul S. Devine was sentenced in San Jose federal court earlier this week, more than three years after he pleaded guilty to wire fraud, conspiracy and money laundering. The scheme funneled millions in kickbacks to Devine for passing along confidential information to Apple Inc. suppliers and manufacturers who used the secrets to negotiate more favorable deals.

The Fight To Release Steve Jobs Deposition Video

Aside from morbid curiosity, I don't understand why everyone wants this video. I mean, do we really need to see Jobs giving his deposition? What he said is a matter of public record now.The plaintiff's lawyers in the case were asked by Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, on Apple's request, to treat the video as "regular testimony," meaning it can be viewed and reported by those attending court but cannot be shown elsewhere. Judge Rogers did not "seal" the evidence, however, leaving open the possibility it may be made available at a later date.

    Apple is turning Japanese

    I really think so
Japan, Prime Minister Abe Shinzo has asked the fruity cargo cult Apple to set up a technical development centre in the Land of the Rising Sun.
Japan’s history of working with autocratic religions of people deluded into following a single leader is not the best, but Abe hopes that Apple’s technical development centre will provide much needed jobs in his slowing economy.
Needless to say he announced it as part of a campaign speech outside of Tokyo ahead of a general election on Sunday.
"Apple has decided it will undertake cutting-edge R&D in Japan. It will be formally announced soon," he said.
Breaking any Apple NDA he might have signed, Abe went on say the facility will be on par with Apple's biggest technical development centres in Asia. Of course there were very little details, but Apple said the new technical centre will be located in Yokohama, outside Tokyo, and will lead to the creation of dozens of new jobs.

Apple has iOS 8 on 63% of all active iOS devices after two months

Apple is seeing a nice adoption rate on its latest version of iOS, with 63% of all iOS users now running iOS 8 according to the latest numbers from Apple's App Store support page for developers.

From last month alone, these numbers have increased by 7%, with installation numbers up 11% since just October 27. iOS 7 usage has dropped 43% in October, down to 33% on December 8. These adoption numbers are based on Apple's App Store usage, which are paired together from analytics service MixPanel.

Apple iPod Classic's reach a new extreme - $90,000 sale of rare item

Remember how we told you to hang onto your iPod classic for a little longer as they're discontinued and selling for a mint? Well, if you're looking for a house deposit or a fancy new imported car - now might be the time to auction off your limited edition iPod classic.

Spotted recently on eBay thanks to Mashable, this special edition U2 iPod was auctioned off for a cool $90,000. Factory sealed and engraved with the autographs of U2's band members, this UK edition has surely helped boost some lucky fans bank accounts - and drained another.

There's also been a $180,000 iPod classic offering pop up on the popular auction and trade website, seeing investors jump at the chance to bolster their income for the year. We've also seen reports that sealed first-generation iPods are now going for a cool $20,000.

Is the new owner of this U2 iPod classic likely to use the device? It's very doubtful, but if so - they're going to have 20GB of storage space and 12 hours of battery life to play with, that is if the battery will last after 10 years of inactivity. Wouldn't it be a shame if they dropped it?

    GLOBALFOUNDRIES is eyeing TSMC's Apple

As best we know TSMC is the sole fabricator of Apple's A8 chips on 20nm process, but so far from what DigiTimes has been able to determine that is not the case for the upcoming A9 chips. TSMC plans to keep pricing the same as they move to 14nm process tech but both Samsung and GLOBALFOUNDRIES are in a position where they could decide to drop their pricing in order to win business. Qualcomm has already placed orders for its 14nm chips with TSMC and Samsung but it is possible that with the experience GLOBALFOUNDRIES has with the 14nm process thanks to business from AMD they may also be able to undercut TSMC's pricing, assuming their yields can stay up.

"Globalfoundries is striving to be among the major contract chipmakers of Qualcomm and Apple, vying for 14nm chip orders from the two vendors, according to industry sources."

Samsung has already begun producing Apple’s next iPhone processor

Reports are coming in suggesting that Apple has once again partnered up with Samsung for its next iPhone chip, the A9, which will power next year’s iPhones and iPads. Additionally, the A9 processors are already in production at Samsung’s plant.
Korea’s Electronic Times reported today that the new A9 SoCs are already in production based on Samsung’s new 14nm process. With this move, it seems that Samsung has reclaimed the majority share of Apple’s production needs, something that the company hinted would happen back in October, when Samsung General Manager, Dr. Kinam Him told reporters that the company’s profits would improve once it started supplying Apple with 14nm chips.

Samsung’s production schedule was already expected to begin at the end of the year, so this latest news falls in line with the established road map. While we know that Apple’s A9 chips are in production, we don’t know when Samsung plans to deliver the components to the company. Additionally, Apple is expected to split its order between Samsung and TSMC, ensuring that it doesn’t rely solely on one supplier.
Apple has tried to distance itself from Samsung in recent years, following the Korean device maker’s market dominance. However, it seems that Samsung consistently beats out other suppliers, keeping Apple coming back for more.

Apple Online Store begins accepting PayPal payments

Apple's online stores in the US and the UK have added PayPal as a payment option. Previously, PayPal transactions were only available in the iTunes Music Store, App Store, and iBookstore. As can be seen in the screenshot below, the option will appear alongside the usual credit card payment methods.
An important point worth mentioning here is that the feature, which was first spotted by Re/Code, isn't yet available in the Apple Store iOS app, and it isn't clear when, and if, it will be added.
In addition to the new payment option, the Cupertino-based company is also promoting PayPal Credit, allowing you to pay for items over $250 in equal monthly installments over the course of 18 months with no interest.
The move is particularly interesting given that both companies share a complicated relationship. Back in September, after Apple announced Apple Pay, PayPal took a jab at the tech giant's security practices by cleverly referring to the iCloud celebrity photo leak in an anti-Apple Pay ad campaign.
