Transition to flat user interfaces is inevitable, but will take time – former Apple engineer

If you do not like modern graphics user interfaces of the latest operating, you will have to get over it because this is exactly how GUIs will look like going forward, according to a former Apple engineer. Flat is the new black.
Millions of users have criticized Apple and Microsoft Corp. for changes of user interfaces (UI) in their iOS, Mac OS X and Windows operating systems in the recent years. The new UIs lack the majority of skeuomorphic elements, are flat, minimalistic and very clean. However, in many cases they are not as intuitive or beautiful as previous-generation interfaces. Bill Fernandez, the first full-time employee of Apple and a well-known expert in user interfaces, believes that transition to flat UIs is just an inevitability.
“Years ago a friend asked what I thought Web pages of the future would be like and I said ‘like magazines,’” said Mr. Fernandez in an interview with Cnet News. “I thought we would see flatter designs, expert typography, beautiful, magazine-advertisement-like page layouts, etc. That prediction is coming true with the trend toward ‘flat’ UI design.”

When graphics user interfaces emerged in the eighties and evolved in the nineties, many of their elements were skeuomorphic, made to recreate actual objects, goods or devices. This helped to make UIs more intuitive for people not familiar with particular programs as well as more stylish. Many skeuomorphic design elements outlived actual items they were to depicture. We no longer use diskettes, folders, sketching boards, notepads, players and many other things we used just a decade ago. As a result, there is no more need to emulate the “real world” on displays: elements on displays have become the real world for many, if not all users.
Since modern user interfaces no longer have to resemble anything, it is time to make them clean and intuitive. Unfortunately, some things get lost on this path. Eventually, developers will figure out how to make “flat” UIs perfect.
“In moving towards flat design we are losing much of the wisdom that was embedded in the old 3D style of UI, for example: a user must be able to glance at a screen and know what is an interactive element (e.g., a button or link) and what is not (e.g., a label or motto); a user must be able to tell at a glance what an interactive element does (does it initiate a process, link to another page, download a document, etc.?); the UI should be explorable, discoverable and self-explanatory. But many apps and websites, in the interest of a clean, spartan visual appearance, leave important UI controls hidden until the mouse hovers over just the right area or the app is in just the right state. This leaves the user in the dark, often frustrated and disempowered,” explained the legendary engineer.

Although it is an art to design user interfaces of software, Bill Fernandez reckons that visual design is only one element that users interact with. In reality user interacts with a lot of things and all of them have to be made very well.
“The true user interface is the gestalt of many things: industrial design, ergonomics, internal hardware, performance, error handling, visual design, interaction, latency, reliability, predictability, and more,” said the legendary engineer. “I am glad to see my profession moving from the concept of user ‘interface’ (where the user interacts with the screen) to user ‘experience’ (where more the above factors are considered),” said Mr. Fernandez.

Apple will be establishing Research and Development Centres and extending iAD Platform in Japan

Apple has been facing criticism because of its Apple Advertising platform to be concentrated in the area what is called to be its so-called “home”. To this, the company announced a major turn and announced to extend iAD to the money-spinning and a much rewarding market of Japan. Prime Minister of Japan also asked Japan to setup an R&D center in order to bring in the technology at Japanese floor.

Apple gearing up to penetrate Japanese markets

Apple also announced that it will turn its iAD to the Japanese market in partnership with Dentsu, which is an advertising company hub in Tokyo, Japan. Apple will be targeting touch IPhone and IPod users with the help of Dentsu. This was announced long ago in 2011. But here comes the thrilling part of the story. Apple’s technical development center will provide a better job pool for the people in Japan at the time of decelerating economy. Evidently, the rich and aromatic days for Japan’s economy are long departed. We witnessed how China, South Korea and Taiwan companies are making almost everything on earth including the Apple handheld devices and Japan is lacking behind day by day.

Ex-iTunes engineer admits Apple tried to block rivals on iPods

Apple is facing a pretty massive class action lawsuit at the moment over accusations that the company removed songs from customer iPods if they weren’t bought from iTunes. Now an ex-iTunes engineer has testified, admitting that Apple did attempt to block music bought from competing services.
Former iTunes engineer, Rod Schultz, testified that he was a part of the team that worked on Apple’s anti-competitive feature. The project was codenamed ‘Candy’ and its main goal was to block access to “100 per cent of non-iTunes clients” and to “keep out third-party players”.

Apparently it was Apple’s hope that by blocking out third-party services, it could then boost the price of iPods. The plaintiffs attempted to submit a paper written by Schultz to evidence, in which he wrote that “Apple was locking the majority of music downloads in its devices.”
The paper wasn’t accepted in court but it does help paint a picture of anti-competitive behaviour on Apple’s part following the rise of digital music services, DRM and portable music players.
Speaking with The Wall Street Journal, outside of court, Schultz said that his work played a key role in the build of to digital copyright protection but later ended up creating “market dominance” for the iPod.

    Apple closes in Russia

You can’t afford it The Fruity Cargo cult Apple has had to shut down its online missionary work in Tsar Putin’s Russia because the country can’t afford the religion. Apple confirmed it has taken down its online store in Russia due to extreme fluctuations in the value of the rouble. It said in a statement that it is currently reviewing pricing.
Jobs’ Mob always had a problem in Russia. The only people who could afford their product were those employed by the Russian Mafia and unlike China, where kids were prepared to sell a kidney to get an iPhone, Russians were a little more practical. One press conference a journalist at a Press Conference actually asked the head of Apple why he should give up three months’ salary for this shiny toy – a far cry from the cheering standing ovations Apple is used to getting from the US press.
The US consumer electronics giant suggested the halt was temporary and only related to the country's currency crisis, which has seen the rouble plummet 20pc against the dollar this week and about a third in a month, despite Moscow's attempts to defend it.
"Due to extreme fluctuations in the value of the rouble, our online store in Russia is currently unavailable while we review pricing. We apologise to customers for any inconvenience," a company spokeswoman said.
The Central Bank of Russia has ratcheted up interest rates from 10.5pc to 17pc to stem the outflow of currency from the country. But the move resulted in very sharp swings in the currency and it ended Tuesday lower than before the rate hike.

Take A Look At How Apple Might Have Plans For 3D On The Next iPhone

After the launch of the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus we have some time before we get to see Apple’s next range of flagship smartphones, probably the iPhone 6S series. While its too early to speculate what changes the Cupertino based manufacturer might have in store for us next year, we have nevertheless managed to stumble across some very interesting patents, that point out towards 3D technology to be introduced in Cupertino’s next lineup of devices.
New Apple Patents Reveal Plans For Interactive 3D Technology And Link Devices To Mac.

According to new Apple patents announced by the US Patent office today, folks over at Apple have some interesting ideas about 3D technology on their devices. The patents released relate to Apple’s focus towards 3D interface design efforts which intend to take things much further than the current parallax affect found in iOS devices.

Additional retailers, companies adopting Apple Pay mobile pay system

Major retailers, banks and start-ups are reportedly jumping on the Apple Pay mobile payment bandwagon, according to recent media reports. TD Bank, USAA, Commerce Bank, Barclaycard and SunTrust are financial institutions willing to test Apple Pay, while Staples, Albertsons and Winn-Dixie are retailers also interested.

"Retailers and payment companies see Apple Pay as the implementation that has the best chance at mass consumer adoption, which has eluded prior attempts," said Patrick Moorhead, president f Moor Insights & Strategies, in a statement to the New York Times. "They believe it will solve many of the problems they had before with electronic payments."

Jobs Video Not to Be Released

The judge presiding over the case decided that it was not necessary for it to be released as it was “not a judicial record”.
“Here, the Court agrees with the Eighth Circuit and concludes that the Jobs Deposition is not a judicial record. It was not admitted into evidence as an exhibit. Instead, the Jobs Deposition was merely presented in lieu of live testimony due to the witness’s unavailability, and was and should be treated in the same manner as any other live testimony offered at trial. As is typical of all live testimony, it is properly made available to the public through its initial courtroom presentation and, subsequently, via the official court transcript, the latter of which is the judicial record of such testimony.”
Apparently the judge made the decision based on a previous case involving a video deposition of President Bill Clinton and due to the fact that Apple fiercely attempted to prevent its release.

Apple Raised $20 Million For (Product) RED

    Made with Flare More Info'>
In an e-mail to employees, (seen by Re/code) Tim Cook said that the company had raised a total of $20 million for AIDS charity (Product) RED.
Apple had a massive campaign for the charity centred around World AIDS Day in November. The App Store was taken over by (RED) (literally) with a countless number of high profile apps donating all or some of their earnings to the effort. For World AIDS Day itself, a percentage of all profits made by Apple on all products sold on its online store was donated to (RED).
“I’m thrilled to announce that our total donation for this quarter will be more than $20 million — our biggest ever — bringing the total amount Apple has raised for (PRODUCT) RED to over $100 million,” Cook wrote. “The money we’ve raised is saving lives and bringing hope to people in need. It’s a cause we can all be proud to support.”
The money raised during this campaign brings a total donation of $95 million over the period that Apple has supported (RED).

Apple has been plagued by accusations of exploitation of its employees in China for many years, but the company has always insisted that takes protection of workers’ rights very important.

One of the BBC’s undercover reporters, posing as a member of staff, was forced to work for 18 days straight with no days off.

New Apple Patent shows Touch ID upgrade

Patent applications often reveal future or potential company plans some time before announcement. Today, a new Apple patent is showing off a rather big Touch ID sensor upgrade, which likely won’t be officially announced until next September alongside the new iPhones.
Originally found by AppleInsider, patent application 13/918221 shows off a new Touch ID sensor that will be able to recognize finger gestures as well as finger prints. The official title of the patent is: “Electronic Device Switchable to a User-Interface Unlocked Mode Based Upon a Pattern of Input Motions and Related Methods”.

The diagram illustrates unlocks with twists, swipes and patterns- something that Android has had for a while, although not via a finger print sensor. Curiously enough, the patent application was actually made by Dale Seltak, the co-founder of AuthenTec, a company that Apple acquired, which in turn led to the development of the current Touch ID sensor.
While it is likely that Apple is working to improve its Touch ID technology, it is impossible to know for sure whether or not we will see these new features in the next iPhone until an announcement is made.

Cá fica uma noticia mais elaborada, com video emitido pela BBC sobre as fabricas dos produtos da Apple

A documentary by BBC has alleged iPhone factories breaking standards on “worker’s hours, ID cards, dormitories, work meetings, and juvenile workers.” The documentary has managed to “deeply” offend Tim Cook and others at Apple who claim that BBC avoided the “facts and perspectives” provided by Apple. Here is the full BBC documentary on Apple factories that was uploaded unofficially. Watch it while you can as it is expected to be taken off the grid soon.
“When they fall asleep that way, again and again, that means that the conditions of work are totally and physically intolerable”

Apple BBC documentary on working conditions in Shanghai:

In this Apple BBC documentary, we are looking at workers sleeping right at their workstations with the claims made by employees that they haven’t received an off day in last 18 days.
Exhausted workers were filmed falling asleep on their 12-hour shifts at the Pegatron factories on the outskirts of Shanghai… One undercover reporter, working in a factory making parts for Apple computers, had to work 18 days in a row despite repeated requests for a day off.

While we have long heard about the demeaning behavior and inhumane conditions of Pegatron factory, this might be the first time that a media outlet with the respectability and credibility of BBC has covered it making Apple worried about its forever-declining reputation of workers’ conditions in Asia. BBC’s reporters went to Pegatron factories situated in the outskirts of Shanghai where it recorded the breach of standards and low treatment workers suffer. The under cover investigation went live yesterday at BBC One titled “Apple’s Broken Promises”. Here is the video of this Apple BBC documentary:

Apple’s senior vice president of operations Jeff Williams has sent a detailed letter to its UK staff over deeply offending allegations made by BBC about company’s mistreatment of its workers in Chinese factories.
Panorama showed some of the shocking conditions around tin mining in Indonesia. Apple has publicly stated that tin from Indonesia ends up in our products, and some of that tin likely comes from illegal mines.

Tim Cook ‘deeply offended’ over labor abuse accusations

Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, has gone on record to say that he is “deeply offended” by the BBC’s accusations of poor working conditions at Chinese supply factories. The companies Apple uses for manufacturing have been criticized in the past but despite the firm taking a more proactive approach, the BBC’s new Panorama investigation shows that the problem still very much persists.

Under cover reporters hired at Pegatron factories came across an exhausted work force, with many struggling to stay awake on the production line due to long 60 hour work weeks. Other issues included employees being forced to opt in to night shifts and candidates not properly undergoing health and safety tests.

Due to the serious nature of the allegations being levied at Apple today, the company was quick to respond. An internal memo sent to Apple employees and acquired by The Telegraph, attempts to discredit the BBC report: “Panorama’s report implied that Apple isn’t improving working conditions. Let me tell you, nothing could be further from the truth”.
The letter to employees was written by Apple SVP of Operations, Jeff Williams, who notes that “Tim Cook and I were deeply offended”.
“no other company is doing as much as Apple does to ensure fair and safe working conditions, to discover and investigate problems, to fix and follow through when issues arise, and to provide transparency into the operations of our suppliers.”
Apple’s own engineers are apparently “constantly” at the factories, overseeing production and often report safety concerns and worker mistreatment.

    Carta na integra

    "UK Team,
As you know, Apple is dedicated to the advancement of human rights and equality around the world. We are honest about the challenges we face and we work hard to make sure that people who make our products are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.
Last night, the BBC’s Panorama program called those values into question. Like many of you, Tim and I were deeply offended by the suggestion that Apple would break a promise to the workers in our supply chain or mislead our customers in any way.
I’d like to give you facts and perspective, all of which we shared with the BBC in advance, but were clearly missing from their program.
Panorama showed some of the shocking conditions around tin mining in Indonesia. Apple has publicly stated that tin from Indonesia ends up in our products, and some of that tin likely comes from illegal mines. Here are the facts:
Tens of thousands of artisanal miners are selling tin through many middlemen to the smelters who supply to component suppliers who sell to the world. The government is not addressing the issue, and there is widespread corruption in the undeveloped supply chain. Our team visited the same parts of Indonesia visited by the BBC, and of course we are appalled by what’s going on there.
Apple has two choices: We could make sure all of our suppliers buy tin from smelters outside of Indonesia, which would probably be the easiest thing for us to do and would certainly shield us from criticism. But it would be the lazy and cowardly path, because it would do nothing to improve the situation for Indonesian workers or the environment since Apple consumes a tiny fraction of the tin mined there. We chose the second path, which is to stay engaged and try to drive a collective solution.
We spearheaded the creation of an Indonesian Tin Working Group with other technology companies. Apple is pushing to find and implement a system that holds smelters accountable so we can influence artisanal mining in Indonesia. It could be an approach such as “bagging and tagging” legally mined material, which has been successful over time in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We are looking to drive similar results in Indonesia, which is the right thing to do.
Panorama also made claims about our commitment to working conditions in our factories. We know of no other company doing as much as Apple does to ensure fair and safe working conditions, to discover and investigate problems, to fix and follow through when issues arise, and to provide transparency into the operations of our suppliers.
I want you to know that more than 1400 of your Apple coworkers are stationed in China to manage our manufacturing operations. They are in the factories constantly — talented engineers and managers who are also compassionate people, trained to speak up when they see safety risks or mistreatment. We also have a team of experts dedicated solely to driving compliance with our Supplier Code of Conduct across our vast supply chain.
In 2014 alone, our Supplier Responsibility team completed 630 comprehensive, in-person audits deep into our supply chain. These audits include face-to-face interviews with workers, away from their managers, in their native language. Sometimes critics point to the discovery of problems as evidence that the process isn’t working. The reality is that we find violations in every audit we have ever performed, no matter how sophisticated the company we're auditing. We find problems, we drive improvement, and then we raise the bar.
Panorama’s report implied that Apple isn’t improving working conditions. Let me tell you, nothing could be further from the truth. Here are just a few examples:
Several years ago, the vast majority of workers in our supply chain worked in excess of 60 hours, and 70+ hour workweeks were typical. After years of slow progress and industry excuses, Apple decided to attack the problem by tracking the weekly hours of over one million workers, driving corrective actions with our suppliers and publishing the results on our website monthly — something no other company had ever done. It takes substantial effort, and we have to weed out false reporting, but it's working. This year, our suppliers have achieved an average of 93% compliance with our 60-hour limit. We can still do better. And we will.
Our auditors were the first to identify and crack down on a ring of unscrupulous labor brokers who were holding workers’ passports and forcing them to pay exorbitant fees. To date, we have helped workers recoup $20 million in excessive payments like these.
We’ve gone far beyond auditing and corrective actions by creating educational programs for workers in the same facilities where they make our products. More than 750,000 people have taken advantage of these college-level courses and enrichment programs, and the feedback we get from students is inspiring.
I will not dive into every issue raised by Panorama in this note, but you can rest assured that we take all allegations seriously, and we investigate every claim. We know there are a lot of issues out there, and our work is never done. We will not rest until every person in our supply chain is treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.

Thanks for your time and your support."

Hipocrisia.
