    The Apple iPad Pro Review

At this point it probably isn’t a secret that tablet sales have leveled off, and in some cases they have declined. Pretty much anywhere you care to look you’ll see evidence that the tablet market just isn’t as strong as it once was. It’s undeniable that touch-only tablets have utility, but it seems that the broader market has been rather lukewarm about tablets. I suspect at least part of the problem here is that the rise of the phablet has supplanted small tablets. Large tablets are nice to have, but almost feel like a luxury good when they’re about as portable as an ultrabook. While a compact laptop can’t easily be used while standing, or any number of other situations where a tablet is going to be better, a compact laptop can do pretty much anything a touch-only tablet can. A laptop is also going to be clearly superior for a significant number of cases, such as typing or precise pointing.
As a result, large touch-only tablets feel like they’ve been limited to home use as a computer away from the computer. Tablets are great when you’re on the couch or in bed, but once you get to this point there are some obvious questions as to whether it makes sense to drop $500+ USD on a tablet that seems to have relatively limited utility. The Surface lineup has been showing signs of growth, but in general the Surface is more of a mix between laptop and tablet rather than a tablet. I would argue that given the OS and overall design that the Surface and Surface Pro are really more laptop than tablet, even if at the hardware level the Surface Pro 4 and Surface 3 are basically tablets with kickstands and keyboard covers.
If you’re guessing that this means Apple has had some issues with growing sales of their iPad lineup, you’d be right. From my first experiences with the iPad 3, I was impressed with the improved user experience for things like web browsing and other smartphone tasks, but I never really felt like it made enough sense to get one for myself. The iPad Air 2 was once again impressive and I felt like I could recommend it to other people that wanted a tablet, but I personally struggled to come up with a reason why I would buy it.
This brings us to the iPad Pro. This is probably the first time Apple has seriously deviated from traditional iPad launches, putting together a tablet built for (limited) productivity and content creation rather than just simple content consumption, creating what's arguably the iPad answer to the Surface Pro. To accomplish this, Apple has increased the display size to something closer to that of a laptop, and we see the addition of a stylus and a keyboard cover for additional precision inputs. Of course, under the hood there have been a lot of changes as well, so the usual spec sheet can be found below to summarize those changes.

    Apple iPad Pro (32GB/Wi-Fi)
    On amazon

At a high level, the iPad Pro gains a larger display with a higher resolution, more memory, a new SoC, and a larger battery to compensate for the change in display size. In addition to these changes, the iPad Pro also brings noticeable changes to the speakers, with an increase to four speakers which allow the iPad Pro to compensate for device orientation when projecting stereo audio.
    Design

The most immediate change that you can see in the iPad Pro is the sheer size. The 12.9” display of the iPad Pro basically makes it feel like you’re carrying a laptop around. I would argue that this doesn’t actually affect the portability of the iPad Pro, but this is mostly because the iPad Air 2 was something that I only carried in a backpack to begin with. People carrying their tablets in a small bag, purse, or even just in their hands will notice the difference, so the change in size might be more or less noticeable depending upon how you carry things around.
The increase in size does affect weight. After significant use, I honestly don’t think the mass is a significant issue. It does feel heavier than the iPad Air 2, but the mass distribution is such that there isn’t a ton of battery hanging out at the edges of the device where it’ll affect the moment of inertia. This does raise the question of whether Apple included enough battery for sufficient battery life, but that’s a question best left for the rest of the review.
In terms of design, the iPad Pro is rather unremarkable if you’ve ever seen an iPad Air before; it is for all intents and purposes a bigger iPad Air. On the front, the display dominates, with some bezels on the sides and top. The top has the front-facing camera, and the bottom has the home button with TouchID.
Looking at the sides of the tablet, the top edge has the power button and 3.5mm port, along with two of the four speakers. The right edge has the volume buttons, and the bottom edge has the Lightning port and the other two speakers. The left edge is mostly empty, but contains the Smart Connector for the Smart Keyboard and similar accessories.
The back of the tablet is mostly unremarkable as well. For the LTE model, an RF window is visible on the top of the device to allow LTE and other connectivity to function. For the WiFi variants, it looks like the bottom display bezel and the bottom two speakers are the RF windows, so there aren’t any visible areas that indicate where the WiFi antennas are.
Overall, the iPad Pro feels like an iPad, with nothing all that remarkable beyond its size which is carried well. I never really noticed the mass or size of the iPad Pro even if it is clearly larger and heavier than the iPad Air 2. I also didn’t notice any issues with the back cover flexing, but given enough pressure on the back cover pretty much any device this large will see some screen distortion or bending. The iPad Pro does technically regress in thickness compared to the iPad Air 2, but I never noticed the difference in practice, especially when the larger display is really what matters more.
    Toda a review:

A9X Vs Intel Core M CPUs: Performance Analysis Shows Apple Is Better Off Placing Its Own Chips In Its Products

We have already analyzed Apple’s A9X SoC, and it is just unfortunate that iPad Pro users will have no idea what to do with all that horsepower. With iOS apps running on the oversized slate, we take a look at the performance differences between Apple’s flagship SoC as it takes on Intel’s Skylake Core M processors, with one little question in mind? Should Apple sever its partnership with Intel and start incorporating its own produced chipsets in products like MacBooks? Let us find out.

SoC Analysis: A9X Vs Intel Core M – Apple Has A Decision To Make

The guys at Anandtech did a very comprehensive performance comparison between Apple’s A9X and Intel’s Core M lineup of processors. As you can see in the images below, Apple’s flagship chipset is definitely able to zip past Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3 (in some cases), which is armed with Intel’s 4th generation processors mobile processors. For those who do not know which processors are present inside the software giant’s previous generation tablet, they have been listed below:

    • 4th generation Intel Core i3-4020Y 1.50 GHz with Intel HD Graphics 4200
    • 4th generation Intel Core i5-4300U 1.90 GHz (with Turbo Boost Technology up to 2.9GHz) with Intel HD Graphics 4400
    • 4th generation Intel Core i7-4650U 1.70 GHz (with Turbo Boost Technology up to 3.3 GHz) with Intel HD Graphics 5000

Additionally, the base model of Surface Pro 4 is powered by an Intel Core M processor, making it obviously slower when pitted against iPad Pro. Despite the fact that the comparison details did not state the performance analysis between A9X and the 4th generation Core i7 processor, the fact that a mobile chipset is able to zip past something as capable as a mobile CPU is quite impressive. This would automatically translate in Intel’s Core M lineup of processors being incapable of surpassing Apple’s fastest chipset, leading to one decision that should be taken by the Cupertino tech giant by now? Should it sever its relationship with Intel and start incorporating its own SoCs in its own lineup such as MacBooks.

Should Apple Ditch Intel In Favor Of Its Own Chipsets?

During 2015, Apple unveiled its 12 inch MacBook, which was powered by Intel’s Core M processor lineup, and it happened to possess a very thin form factor, indicating that the company decided to make some considerable performance sacrifices in order to get its notebook down to such a thin form factor. The exact same thing can easily be replicated if Apple incorporated its own A9X inside its upcoming MacBook, assuming the firm wants to roll out the successor of its 12 inch MacBook, meaning that it will sport an even smaller amount of mass and dimensions as opposed to the 2015 version.

However, in doing so, developers might find themselves at a wall that they are unable to scale because till now, all the software has been written for the x86 architecture, meaning that a ton of coding is going to be required for desktop applications to start running on ARM based processors. However, such a thing is possible, if Apple is able to provide the right incentive. Apple has always been known for charging a premium price for its products, but at least for its entry machines, it could reduce the starting price tag if it chose to incorporate future SoCs in them.

The iPad Pro’s Smart Connector Can Now Update Accessory Firmware

The iPad Pro has learned a new trick which many users will find interesting: the ability to upgrade the firmware of an accessory which is connected to the tablet using the new Smart Connector.

iPad Pro Learned A New Party Trick – Upgrading Accessory Firmware Using The Smart Connector

With the announcement of iOS 9.3 beta, Apple revealed that the new firmware update comes packed with a bunch of cool new features. These features are those that are advertised on Apple’s very own website, but of course, as you’d expect, there are under-the-hood changes packed with the update as well, which enhance the overall functionality of the device the new firmware is going to be installed on. Case in point, the newly released iOS 9.3 beta 2 firmware gives iPad Pro the ability to upgrade the firmware of an accessory that is connected using the Smart Connector.
The discovery of this nifty little addition was made by Stefan Wolfrum, and he sent out a tweet confirming his findings:

    Stefan Wolfrum ☺ @metawops
    WHOA! iOS 9.3 beta 2 apparently just updated my @Logitech Create #iPadPro keyboard's firmware!! /cc @settern

Previously, if you had to upgrade the firmware of an iOS accessory, then you would have to do so using your PC or Mac. But thanks to the new iOS 9.3 beta update, you can skip the noise altogether and jump right into the upgrade process straight from your iPad Pro.
Given the fact that the iPad Pro is the only tablet with a Smart Connector, and also keeping in view this software addition, therefore it’s likely that a future iPad will also grace the Smart Connector. But of course, it’s just a hunch, and it’s possible that Apple has other plans in its book. Besides, the company would prefer keeping the Smart Connector exclusive to its larger and more expensive tablet.
Speaking of a new iPad, rumors are floating around that Apple will take the liberty to announce the iPad Air 3 in March, and the new slate will pack a 4K display, and things will topped off with 4GB of RAM, the same amount that lives inside the iPad Pro. Apart from that, there are rumors that the iPad Air 3 will add support for the Apple Pencil as well.
We’re sure the iPad Pro, and the entire iPad lineup for that matter, will learn new tricks as we move into the future. And given that new iPads are on the horizon, it’ll be interesting to see in which direction the Cupertino will take its portfolio to appease customers this time around.

Apple iPad Pro outsold entire Surface line last quarter says IDC

We saw Apple's iPad sales continue to decline in its most recent set of results. However the recently introduced and rather large iPad Pro has apparently done comparatively well, according to a new market research report by IDC (via Apple Insider).
Despite only being released in November the Apple iPad Pro outsold the entire Microsoft Surface line in the three month period ending 31st December 2015 according to IDC. Jitesh Ubrani, Senior Research Analyst with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Device Trackers said "Despite lukewarm reviews, the iPad Pro was the clear winner this season as it was the top selling detachable, surpassing notable entries from Microsoft and other PC vendors." Ubrani noted that Google Android detachable tablet challengers would require "a lot more refinement" in order to compete with Apple and Microsoft.

Apple sold 2 million iPad Pro devices, Microsoft Surface sales added up to 1.6 million
Drilling down on the numbers Jean Philippe Bouchard, Research Director, Tablets at IDC, compared the iPad Pro and Surface line sales directly (though these numbers aren't published in the summary tables in the report). Bouchard said that "Apple sold just over two million iPad Pros while Microsoft sold around 1.6 million Surface devices, a majority of which were Surface Pro and not the more affordable Surface 3." From these statistics he concluded that "it's clear that price is not the most important feature considered when acquiring a detachable – performance is." It isn't absolutely clear, but he appears to be talking about the 'competition' among Surface tablets there, rather than Surface vs iPad Pro.
It looks like the iPad Pro has helped Apple maintain its grasp of the faltering tablet market. In the market overall, in Q4 2015, Apple iPads accounted for very nearly a quarter of all sales (16.1 million). Second placed Samsung sold 9 million tablets and third placed Amazon 5.2 million. Lenovo, with a significant proportion of Windows tablets in its roster, was fourth placed and shipped 3.2 million devices.

The detachable market is a very important segment of the tablets market as it represents a growth niche.

How To Fast Charge iPad Pro – Tips & Tricks

Here’s how you can fast charge iPad Pro in a few easy steps and get up and running in no time.

The iPad Pro has a massive battery, 38.8 Wh, or 10,307mAh for those who love their numbers to be precise. And while the perks of having a larger battery under the hood are quite obvious, but the biggest tradeoff comes into play when you’ve depleted said battery and are on a journey to charge it back up.
You Can Fast Charge Your iPad Pro Using The Tips And Tricks We Have Outlined Below

The iPad Pro takes a whopping four and a half hours to fully charge up, which if you’re asking us, is an insane amount of time. But worry not, today we’ll walk you through a few tips and tricks that will eventually help you charge up an iPad Pro much more quicker than usual.
    Charge With Airplane Mode On

Turn off all wireless radios (WiFi, Bluetooth etc.) on your iPad Pro before you plug in that power cable, or just simply flick the Airplane mode switch to the ON position using Control Center. With the wireless radios turned off, the strain on the battery will be far less and it’ll eventually charge up quicker.
    Advertisements

Power Down Your Device While Charging It

There are processes running in the background that eat up battery life even if the device is on charge. Simply plug in the power cable, and after that turn off your iPad Pro and do not turn it on for at least a couple of hours. Instant charge right there!
Absolutely Avoid Using Your Device While Charging

You read the title – do not think about using your iPad Pro when it’s on charge. Just keep it face down and let the electrons flow through.
    Buy A More Powerful Charger

Although we do not recommend doing this, but getting a slightly powerful wall charger will definitely help reviving the iPad Pro more quicker. But be warned, a powerful charger may damage your iPad Pro’s battery, so go ahead while keeping all the risks in mind.
Despite making leaps in the technology space, it’s surprising that Apple hasn’t packed fast charging tech into its mobile devices such as the iPhone or iPad. After all, when you’re stranded at an airport, grabbing a quick charge can absolutely become a godsend thing to have.
Maybe Apple is reserving the tech for future devices for now.

Apple to launch 9.7-inch iPad Pro, not Air 3; Smart Keyboard & Apple Pencil support likely

Apple will further differentiate the next-generation 9.7-inch iPad from its predecessor by making it part of the new iPad Pro line, according to sources. Much like the MacBook Pro comes in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes, the iPad Pro will soon come in 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch variations. This trend follows Apple not calling its 12-inch MacBook a new Air despite developing the product as an apparent successor to the MacBook Air.

The new 9.7-inch iPad Pro will debut at Apple’s Tuesday, March 15th event and begin shipping as soon as March 18th, we previously reported. The smaller iPad Pro will have nearly identical features and specifications as the bigger model, bringing along the A9X processor and RAM upgrades from the 12.9-inch model. It will also include the 12.9-inch model’s updated display technology to support the Apple Pencil.
We previously reported that the new 9.7-inch iPad model will include a Smart Connector, and now we have learned that Apple is preparing a smaller version of its Smart Keyboard cover attachment for the new model, and it likely will be ready for March. Like the 12.9-inch models, quad stereo speakers will be part of the hardware. The 9.7-inch iPad Pro is also expected to come in the same colors and storage capacities as the larger iPad Pro, but the pricing will be closer in line with the iPad Air models it will succeed.
This new iPad Pro launch will also open up the door to Apple further simplifying its iPad lineup. Sources say that Apple is slowing down production of older iPad mini and original iPad Air models, meaning that the iPad mini 2 and first-generation iPad Air are likely to be discontinued upon the launch of the smaller iPad Pro. Apple will also introduce a new 4-inch iPhone 5se with an A9 chip, Live Photos and slightly curved edges plus multiple new Apple Watch band options at the March event.

9.7-inch iPad Pro Camera Specs Show That Tablets Are Getting A Huge Upgrade

After announcing its 12.9 inch iPad Pro, a 9.7 inch slate is what Apple is looking to announce during its upcoming event that will take place on 22nd March. The latest pieces of information suggest that Apple could be the first to incorporate huge camera upgrades inside tablets.

9.7 Inch iPad Pro Expected To Sport A 12MP Camera – Would This Mean That 4K Video Recording Is Also On The Cards?

According to the latest pieces of information, Apple’s upcoming 9.7 inch iPad Pro is going to be outfitted with a 12.3MP rear camera sensor. If were are not mistaken, this is the same camera sensor that is present in the company’s iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, suggesting that the tech giant wants to bring impressive image capturing and video recording to its flagship slate as well. This could also mean that 4K video recording at a fluid 30FPS would be a feature that would be present on the tablet, marking the first ever time that a tablet will be able to record 4K footage.

It is not like the slate will have any issue recording UHD footage, especially when it has been stated that the upcoming iPad Pro will be incorporated with Apple’s A9X SoC, and looking at its benchmarks, we have to say that it will easily be able to pull it off. In addition to possessing a very capable camera sensor, the 9.7 inch iPad Pro will also sport its own dedicated cases with a keyboard accessory in order to deliver the much needed productivity from a powerhouse slate. Additionally, Apple’s upcoming product is said to feature a 4K display, and 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM.
    Advertisements

The resolution radiated from the slate will be much higher opposed to what the original iPad Pro was able to resonate, and it’s not something that an A9X will not be able to handle. In addition to the slate, iPhone 5SE is also expected to be unveiled at the aforementioned date, and would be released in the same colors as its older brother iPhone 6s: Silver, Space Gray, Gold, and Rose Gold.

While some sources have stated that the color is going to be referred as ‘bright’ or ‘hot’ pink, the texture is going to remain the same, so it will just be called Rose Gold. It will also provide support for Apple Pay (meaning it will have an NFC chip incorporated inside it), and a rear camera sensor equal to that of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Looking at the hardware present inside the upcoming devices, we are thoroughly excited for the grand unveiling of both iPhone 5se and the 9.7 inch iPad Pro? Are you guys excited?
    We certainly are.

Apple's 9.7-inch iPad Pro will start at $599

Four models now: iPad mini, iPad Air 2, 9.7-inch iPad Pro, 12.9-inch iPad Pro

Over the past few months, rumors have been circulating that Apple’s next-generation 9.7-inch iPad was going to be a third-generation iPad Air, complete with the same display resolution and sporting a faster processor and lighter design. As of recent, sources close to the company are suggesting that an “iPad Air 3” will not be announced next Monday, but will instead have its market slot replaced by an identically-sized 9.7-inch iPad Pro, complete with Apple’s Pencil stylus for greater input flexibility and four self-adjusting speakers.

It has been long expected that Apple would announce a four-model iPad lineup (or three models, based only on display size), and now it finally has the pieces in place to do so. The 7.9-inch iPad mini will now become the base model at $399, the iPad Air 2 right above it will likely receive a price drop to $499, while the new 9.7-inch iPad Pro will become the new midrange option at $599, and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro will remain the flagship option at $799.
Yes, the price for the midrange iPad has now gone up by $100. The 9.7-inch iPad Pro is expected to increase in price from the usual $499 price in this market slot to $599, perhaps to compensate for a more powerful A9X SoC, 3GB or 4GB of LPDDR4 memory, and a camera upgrade from 8-megapixels to 12-megapixels with support for 4K Ultra HD 3840x2160p video capture like the iPad Pro.

9to5Mac: Apple's 9.7-inch iPad Pro (left) and 12.9-inch iPad Pro (right) with Smart Keyboards
The original iPad with a 9.7-inch (1024x768) display was launched in April 2010 at a base price of $499 for the 16GB Wi-Fi only version. This was followed up with the 2nd-generation 9.7-inch unit (1024x768) in March 2011, the 3rd generation 9.7-inch (2048x1536) unit in March 2012, the 4th generation 9.7-inch (2048x1536) unit in November 2012, the 9.7-inch (2048x1536) iPad Air in November 2013, and the 9.7-inch (2048x1536) iPad Air 2 in October 2014, all of which retained the same $499 base price for 16GB Wi-Fi only units.

Three iPad sizes, four models: 7.9-inch iPad mini (right), 9.7-inch iPad Air 2 and 9.7-inch iPad Pro (center), and 12.9-inch iPad Pro (left)
Unfortunately, even at the new $599 midrange price, the 9.7-inch iPad Pro will probably not come with Apple’s Pencil stylus, a Bluetooth accessory available separately for another $99. Of course, Apple could surprise its customers on Monday by including it free with the 9.7-inch device, but we have no leads to suggest this may be the case. This major detail would still put Apple behind Microsoft in terms of stylus adoption for its tablets, considering that the Redmond-based company includes the Surface Pen with every Surface Pro unit it has sold since the original launched in 2012.
Meanwhile, sources suggest that while the iPad Air 2 is likely to receive a price drop down to $499, dwindling supplies of the first-generation iPad Air from 2013 may result in the original unit’s discontinuation.

The 9.7 iPad Pro Listed On App Store China; Device To Cost $599 As Launch Imminent(?)

With only two days left until Apple’s ‘Let Us Loop You In’ event this month, a couple of things are expected to be one the agenda. This year, we’re expecting to see a couple of new products from the company in Spring, something which should prove to be a breath of fresh air in the much predictable annual flagship upgrade cycle. As the smartphone industry evolves, periodic upgrades of design and specifications have become the only method manufacturers are able to compete every year; given that users expect things to upgrade at a quick pace.
Moving back towards Apple, the Cupertino manufacturer is expected to change things quite a bit in its gadget lineup this year. Last September saw both the iPad Pro and the iPhone 6s/6s Plus being launched; each with the respective focus on select user categories. With this in mind, general sentiment around expects a four inch iPhone and a smaller iPad Pro to be launched the day after; with the rumor mill also providing critical information.

Apple’s App Store In China Lists ‘Spring iPad’ Further Pointing Towards Flagship Tablet Launch

As far as the iPad goes, we’ve seen a significant shift of things on the tablet lineup, with Apple’s new strategy being extensive focus on isolated devices, in terms of user categorization and functionality. We saw the iPad Air 2 come with the A8X on board, marking a significant boost in processing power and a slim design factor that enabled the tablet to strike the right balance between performance, aesthetics and portability.
That beings said, things are now expected to head towards a smaller iPad Pro, most likely with the A9X on board, expected to come with a 9.7 inch screen on board. What other features, if any, will Apple introduce on the device, aside from the usual ones for the 12.9 inch slate aren’t known right now. This begs the question that will the device be a replacement for the iPad Air lineup; or will Apple release another tablet later this year?

Design wise, it’ll follow the iPhone 5s in overall language, with no significant upgrades to be expected.
As far as pricing and other details for the iPad Pro go, folks over at 9to5Mac have managed to gather some information courtesy of their well known sources with Apple. USB Type-C Adapter For Your iPad Pro: Here’s Why You Should Purchase It

During the announcement of the 9.7 inch iPad Pro, Apple also announced its Lightning to USB Type-C cable, along with a Type-C USB power brick. While it carries a price tag of $50, there is one huge reason why you would want to make such an investment for your iPad Pro.

Video Shows 12.9 Inch iPad Pro Gets Charged 64 Percent Faster When Plugged In Using The New Power Brick

Apple’s 12.9 inch iPad Pro comes with a 12W charger included in the packaging. However, the USB Type-C adapter is able to deliver power to the massive slate 64 percent faster as opposed to the regular charger. In fact, 9to5Mac made their own tests and concluded that the regular 12W charger was only able to charge Apple’s iPad Pro up to 5 percent in 20 minutes, whereas the new power brick was able to charge the tablet up to 14 percent during the exact same time span.
According to the tests, there was a properly controlled environment, with airplane mode on, and the screen on max brightness until the timer hit 10 minutes, then on minimum brightness for the remaining 10 minutes. The only disappointing thing is that why did Apple not bundle this charger with the 12.9 inch slate? It is obvious that the company would either have charged you more for each storage model, and it is clear that the tech giant is charging you top dollar for purchasing premium accessories, which might not be the right thing to do in the name of righteousness, but we live in an imperfect world.

However, you will need to purchase a Type-C USB cable, and that will set you back by even more funds. The Lightning to USB-C cable has been listed to carry a price of $25 for the 1 meter version and $35 for the 2 meter version. Before purchasing the cable, you will have to keep in mind that this accessory has been designed for the 12.9 inch iPad Pro and not the newly announced one. Apple has not specified any official warning that using this cable will harm the 9.7 inch iPad Pro, but if it has not been clarified by the company, then it is naturally a good idea to steer clear from this purchase if you intend on purchasing the 9.7 inch slate.

Apple Inks MLB Deal To Supply Team Dugouts With 12.9-inch iPad Pros

One of the biggest signings in Major League Baseball this year isn't a pitcher with a wicked fast ball or a slugger who specializes in smashing the ball over the fence, but Apple and it's 12.9-inch iPad Pro tablet. Taking a page from Microsoft with its NFL deal, Apple inked a multi-year agreement to supply every MLB team with iPad Pro tablets to help coaches and statisticians evaluate performance data in real-time.

Number crunching is a big deal in sports these days. As portrayed in the 2003 book Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game and subsequent 2011 biographical sports drama Moneyball, former baseball player and current front office executive Billy Beane helped popularize the practice of crunching numbers and stats analysis to make player personnel decision.

"I started in this game 25 years ago and the single biggest change has been the emergence and predominance of analytics," said MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred. "It affects the way we judge players, make decisions on the field and the way fans consume the game."

Using the iPad Pro, teams can view performance stats of both current and past seasons and use that information to make strategic decisions on the field. Such a thing can be helpful in determining where a player is most likely to hit the ball, or which pitcher(s) a particular batter struggles against, to name just two possible scenarios.

Apple's senior VP of marketing, Phil Schiller, says this isn't simply a move of "replacing binders with tablets," but "actually helping them do things that weren't possible before." One example is viewing video of pitchers and hitters from prior games, something that requires going back to the locker room. With the iPad Pro, players can look at footage right from within the dugout.

This is also a major marketing move for Apple. Just as there's plenty of attention paid to the Surface Pro being the official tablet of the NFL, it's a safe bet there will be lots of references to the iPad Pro during MLB games.
