Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End First GameplayEric Monacelli's Avatar + Posted by Eric Monacelli on Dec 06, 2014 // Community Strategist, Naughty Dog

Saturday morning at the inaugural PlayStation Experience we unveiled the very first Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End gameplay. In case you missed it, here’s the full playthrough:

Although we are still in the pre-alpha stage of development, everything you see in the video is in-game and in real-time running at 1080p and a stable 30hz. It’s looking pretty spectacular already and we still have quite some time to optimize and refine our technology to make this the best looking and playing Uncharted game to date.

If you’re wondering who called Nathan Drake “little brother” and exactly what that means, we’ll be trickling out more details soon. Why is Drake on an island? What’s he searching for? Who’s shooting at Drake again and why is he shooting back? Be sure to pay attention to our Twitter feed and social channels for the latest news and updates. 2015 is going to be awesome.

Uncharted 4 Visual Enhancements and Nathan Drake Character Model Show What PS4 is Capable of

Sony recently kick started its first-ever PlayStation Experience event with Naughty Dog’s upcoming highly anticipated action-adventure third-person shooter title known as Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and now the game is getting a special treatment at the event. Naughty Dog demonstrated different technical aspects of the game via a video panel at the event, showing how the latest visual enhancements make the upcoming title look absolutely beautiful compared to the previous games in the series and how Nathan Drake has evolved over time — both age wise and graphically — to look increasingly photorealistic.

Naughty Dog Demonstrates Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End’s Graphical Aspects – Shows New Photorealistic Nathan Drake Model on the PlayStation 4

After presenting 15 minutes of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End gameplay running real-time on the PlayStation 4 console, Naughty Dog conducted a panel, titled “Modeling Nathan Drake: Bringing an Iconic Character to PS4,” at the recent PlayStation Experience event, and revealed the new graphical features that the upcoming game boasts. The developer demonstrated the next-gen tech that is being used to bring Nathan Drake, the protagonist of the series, back to life, and make him look increasingly photorealistic in the upcoming game.

Uncharted 4 Dev Demonstrates Drake’s Next-Gen Character Model with Direct-Feed WIP Screenshots

Sony’s PlayStation 4 console is getting a number of impressive triple A video games next year, but among the currently known titles, the next installment in Naughty Dog’s most cherished action-adventure third-person shooter video game series stands on the top of the most anticipated list. Earlier this month at PlayStation Experience event, Naughty Dog demonstrated visual assets for Drake’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End’s character model, and now, the shading artist on the game has explained how next-gen shaders for the protagonist were developed.

Uncharted 4’s Shading Artist Explains How Nathan Drake’s Amazing Shaders Were Developed Different Techs

After months of recess, Sony brought Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End forward at the PlayStation Experience event earlier this month and made the game’s fans familiar with the new next-gen graphical technology that is being used to completely overhaul Drake’s in-game character model and make it look more photorealistic. It was revealed that the game takes a huge advantage from shaders that provide incredible visuals, and especially highlight small texture details.
One of the minds responsible for Nathan Drake’s in-game facial and body features is Yibing Jiang, shading artist on the game. In good time, Jiang recently decided to display her portfolio on Artstation, and while doing so, she uploaded a complete album containing direct-feed, work-in-progress screenshots of Nathan Drake’s character model from Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, which we’ve already seen in blurry YouTube video from PlayStation Experience. In the description, Jiang explained how Drake’s face was shaped:
-Real-time rendered in game. This is not CGI or pre-render, which means all the shading features for skin, hair, eyes need to be written in code.
-Using Disney Diffuse model, GGX Brdf model and Screen Space Subsurface.
-Hair is using Kajiya-kay Brdf model.
-Frank Tzeng did the sculpting and texturing for his face and arms.

Naughty Dog won't push Uncharted 4 to 60fps if it compromises player experience

Naughty Dog won't boost Uncharted 4's frame rate to 60fps if it compromises the player's experience, game director Bruce Straley has explained.Talking in the latest issue of EDGE, Straley confirmed that the team locked Uncharted 4's frame rate at 30fps for last month's demo, but revealed that the game is actually running "above 30" frames per second.

"We're actually above 30, but we locked it [for the demo], Straley explained. "We're going to do whatever it takes to make the game we want to make. If it means we could go for 60 but lose something that would really impact the player's experience, then it's our choice as developers to say, 'Well, we're going to go for the experience over the 60 frames.'"
EDGE states that a debug station visible on the floor revealed that the game was running at 37fps.
All three PS3 Uncharted titles ran at 30fps. However, hopes that the upcoming PS4 release would run at 60fps were raised after community strategist Arne Meyer revealed that Naughty Dog would be targeting 1080p/60fps "with anything we're doing on this generation".
Last summer's PS4 re-release The Last of Us: Remastered ran at 1080p/60fps, up from the original game's 720p/30fps.

Uncharted 4: Pre Orders Available and Release Date Leaked

The upcoming action-adventure third-person shooter Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End was first announced at the PS4 launch event on Spike TV in November 2013 and then a followup recent gameplay trailer was displayed on the PlayStation Experience event. The game is now available online for pre orders and many gamer have started booking their copies of the game. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, under development by naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, is one of the most anticipated titles across the PS4 for which a lot of speculation has made and lots of comparisons made. Like previously we compared the uncharted 4 visual enhancements on Nathan Drake as compared to Uncharted 3. With several deals available online for the upcoming video game pre orders, Uncharted 4’s release date has been some-what leaked by Walmart.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End Release Date Leaked by Walmart

The upcoming game has lots of deals available online, where you can get the most value for money including the PS store which currently has a 10 percent discount due to make-ups for the PSN downtime. But the best deal where you can buy Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End at best price is for $43.40 on Walmart. And as you can see below the the game is expected to ship from Thursday, the 1st of October so that may be when the game is actually releasing. Although nothing is confirm yet but it looks like we can expect the game to release by October. Have a look at the screenshot below.

This may not necessary be the actual release date for the upcoming game and hence i’m marking it as a rumor but it just cannot be a random release date set aside the pre order. The expected date might be the release date or a date by which the game will surely be out as we can probably say this by certainty that major vendors will have a release or expected release date though official channels which we can now take advantage of and guess around which time the game is releasing. This is basically based on speculation at his point but might i point out that this is how leaks are cultivated which are later confirmed by the developers. We can now also expect an official comment on the release date soon. We’ll keep you updated on the latest gaming news and more on WCCFTech.

Uncharted 4 Clone is Pure Gaming Comedy Gold

Many game developers are concerned about their products being copied or their original ideas being stolen, but today is probably not causing the team at Naughty Dog to lose any sleep. Unearthed: Trail of Ibn Buttuta is definitely not an Uncharted game, but it’s done everything it can to try and imitate it; much in the same way a child could imitate real life using a pack of crayons.
It shouldn’t be funny, the game looks terrible, but much in the same way Goat Simulator is “broken”, I really can’t wait to play Unearthed. Check out the video below and let us know your thoughts.

Uncharted 4 targeted for late September release

The cat might be out of the bag on the 29th we hear

One of the biggest questions we are hearing lately is if we know just when Uncarted 4 might actually ship.

This continues to be a closely guarded secret, with phrases like “later this year” and “holiday season” being the norm.
Now our whispers who claim to be in the know say that at least right now they are hearing that Uncharted 4 is targeted for a September 29th release in North America, followed by an October 2nd release in Europe. We heard some of a unified release on October 2nd, but right now that seems to be just talk.
Still anything could happen and the dates may change or move around depending on the development schedule. Of course this is only talk and we suspect that a final decision will not come till E3 from what we are hearing.

Resumo das features do jogo, segundo a Game Informer.

    - Porting TLOU to PS4 helped Uncharted 4 development
    - Small team working on it since U3 development ended, half the team moved to U4 after TLOU and the rest after Left Behind
    - Takes places 3 years after U3
    - At the start of U4 Drake is living an happy life with Elena, then Sam appears
    - Drake thought Sam was dead
    - Sam life depends on him finding an artifact from Henry Avery
    - Drake feels indebted of his brother and he can't resist getting back on treasure hunting
    - Story takes Drake and Sam to Libertalia "a mythic Madagascar colony purportedly founded by pirates"
    - Says you're not going to spend the whole game on the island, teases snowy and urban enviroments
    - Two rival hunters, Rafe and Nadine
    - Rafe is a very different treasure hunter than Drake, with different morale and approach
    - Nadine owns a private military company in South Africa
    - Villains will play a bigger role this time
    - "The lack of Sam being in Nathan life for so long is what's driven him in the last games"
    - Sam is five years older than Drake
    - Teases Elena and Sully
    - Sam is even more reckless than Drake
    - Sam is jealous of Drake, sees him as the 'better at everything little brother'
    - Lots of rivalry between them
    - ND didn't want to talk about Drake and Sam past
    - Artifacts (collectibles) may contain notes poiting to more treasures/artifacts
    - Enemies can grab your leg if you try to push them over ledges
    - More tools besides Rope and Piton (metal spike)
    - They're not ready to talk about them yet
    - Wants to incorporate the tools into puzzles
    - GI saw an extended demo with a new scene. Drake is beaten down while Sam is rested, they start arguing the existance of Avery secret, then something catches Drake's eye, he moves forward, pull some foliage, revealing a gray monument with a carving.
    - Focusing on navigational freedom for this entry
    - Showed multiple paths, one finding an extra cave, other bypassing a group of enemies
    - Plenty of side stories if you're looking for them
    - In the demo they showed Drake taking a more riskier climbing route, that almost makes him fall in the sea
    - All paths have consequences, there's no "Golden path"
    - Rehauled A.I system
    - Compared Sam A.I to Ellie, but says Sam is a grown up treasure hunter, so he's much stronger than Ellie
    - Trying to "explore what it's like to be with somebody as capable of Nathan Drake"
    - Not giving a straight answer if this is Drake last adventure
    - Still plenty of humour in the game
    - Concept of set piece is "What's something impactful that we can do to switch expectations and how can we have it emotionally charged?"
    - Multiplayer confirmed.

    • There are 60 different animations just of Drake picking up objects.
    • Talk a lot about how weight distribution plays a big role in the animations
    • You can attack enemies from all sides with unique animations to them, you wont magically warp in front of them if you punch.
    • Lots of talk from Druckman on the cost of adventuring on Drake's life, it will be a major focus of the story. Compares his addiction to treasure hunting to a drug addict.
    • All the new items they added were chosen cause it can help keep the pacing and gives you a better sense of exploration and adventure.
    • Cutscenes are now all real time
    • Tools will be used to enhance traversal and puzzle solving
    • They said the large puzzle rooms from Uncharted 3 will still be there, they say U3 had the best puzzles of the series and they want to build on that.
    • TLOU moments where the characters react to what they see or read will happen in this game.
    • Lots of talk about brotherly banter and building a bond between the NPC and the player, "there are some nice cooperative moments between Nate and his brother."
    • On the gigantic setpieces, this is exactly what they say "So now our concept of a set piece is 'what's something impactful we can do to switch expectations and how can we have it emotionally charged?' We want to constantly surprise the player, so it can be really intimate, or really big and bombastic."

Naughty Dog: Uncharted 4 at 60FPS on the PS4 is 'really f**king hard'

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End will be an exclusive to the PlayStation 4, with developer Naughty Dog aiming for 1080p and 60FPS. But throughout the development of Uncharted 4, Naughty Dog has realized that it most likely won't be able to reach a solid 60FPS throughout the entire game.

Neil Druckmann is the Game Director in charge of Uncharted 4, where he said that reaching 60FPS is not an easy task and that Naughty Dog is continuing to opimize the game (water it down) but he hasn't said whether 60FPS is the aim for the company. When asked how hard it was to reach 60FPS in Uncharted 4 during an interview with Game Informer, Druckmann said that it's "Really f**king hard".

He continued: "That's true for any game. It was really hard on The Last of Us Remastered, and that's a game we had finished and we knew exactly what the end result needs to look like. And here [with Uncharted 4] we're trying to push the boundaries of what this game can look like; and do realistic, real-time cutscenes; and trying to do 60fps is really hard". When he was asked directly if Naughty Dog was aiming for 60FPS, he said that Uncharted 4 is still a work-in-progress, and that nothing is solid right now.

"I don't know," he added, continuing: "The objective for us is just to make the best experience. And right now we're trying to push the look. Then we'll see where we're at and reassess. We're constantly making choices to our production about what's going to make the game feel best and look its best". When Uncharted 4 was shown off at Sony's PlayStation Experience event in December, Uncharted 4 was locked at 30FPS, but current builds of the PS4 exclusive are running at higher frame rates.

Back in January, Druckmann said: "We're going to do whatever it takes to make the game we want to make. If it means we could go for 60 but lose something that would really impact the player's experience, then it's our choice as developers to say, 'Well, we're going to go for the experience [instead of] the 60 frames".

I don't mean to be cynical, but it sounds like they can't hit 60FPS at all, and I'm sure we're going to get a baked down, watered down experience. Not that it means much for PC gamers, but it shows that there are already gigantic performance walls on the PS4 that I'm sure won't be broken down any time soon.

Claro que é difícil em hardware tão ultrapassado. Tragam o jogo para PC e fica com melhor aspecto e a correr a mais de 60 fps.

Naughty Dog: Uncharted 4 Very Close To Film Right Now

With each release of an Uncharted game, Naughty Dog won the hearts of their fans around the world and this probably one of the biggest reasons why Uncharted 4 is one of the most highly anticipated games on the PS4 in 2015. And with each new release fans are expecting better/improved graphics complementing some very fast gameplay at 30 fps and 900p. That’s some demand considering that the PlayStation is still a console. But Naughty Dog doesn’t disappoint. They’re going to bring a cinematic experience to the fans with this release. It will possibly just be like watching a blockbuster movie, the difference is that it’ll be a blockbuster game.

Uncharted 4 Team Aims For A Cinematic Experience For It’s PS4 Fans

So the question here is, Is it really possible? The game does look awfully good in terms of graphics but the question here is that is a cinematic experience really possible in Game Animation with the current level of expertise? Well according to Naughty Dog’s Lead Artist Frank Tzeng, In a short few sentences reported on Gamepur, he said that the Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is “Really Close” to a filmed version right now in terms of quality, and it will get closer in a few years. He said:
“Game quality is really close to film right now, look at the stuff we do in Naughty Dog. This character, I’m telling you guys, this character can easily be a digital double in a film. Based on the quality, the detail, the blend shape, the colour, everything that we put on the character [Uncharted 4’s Nathan Drake] this is basically a film character to me. So to me, videos games are getting really close to film quality, and this is exactly what I wanted to do.”
That will sound comforting to PS4 owners and game fans. In addition to this, Frank also explained how the shift from PS3 to PS4 allows much more freedom to developers in making sure that a better experience is communicated to the mass gaming community. He also tipped through this that they’ll get to the cinema-like experience in the future versions of the PlayStation (probably the PS5).
“As we have more powerful consoles coming out, so right now we have PS4, it’s definitely more powerful than PS3 and that enables to put more polygons, you know, using more high-res maps and get more resolutions in a game, making more expressions making more blend shapes and wrinkle maps. All of this is getting us one step closer to the film quality that we wanted for the game industry and I think in a few years we can definitely get there.”
Well if this happens the this is definitely a break-through and the movie industry should be scared of such a time when Animation overtakes it. This does call for worry and RND on their part as we haven’t seen nearly as much innovation in movies as we have in gaming.
