Uncharted 4 To Have A New Balance Between Spectacle Vs Intimate Set-Pieces

The Uncharted 4 E3 Demo, showed off a frantic set-piece that became bigger and bigger, and left the audience with jaws open on the floor. Luckily for those who can’t take that much action – not all set-pieces in Naughty Dog’s last Uncharted chapter, will be as big and frantic as that particular scene.

Naughty Dog’s creative director Neil Druckmann, said this in a recent interview with Official Playstation Magazine UK.
During last E3, Naughty Dog showed off an epic Uncharted 4 set-piece that might well be, one of the most intense action scenes in videogame history. Following the demo, the audience was gasping for air, and the game received several E3 Game Critics Rewards, including one for best action/adventure game.

    Uncharted has evolved

Over the years, the Uncharted series have evolved, and it would seem that developer Naughty Dog has become more and more proficient in delivering unique set-pieces for their games. In the OPM UK interview, Druckmann talks about the evolution of their set-pieces in the Uncharted games, but also mentions the more ‘smaller’ pieces from ‘The Last of Us’.
“I guess our approach in the past has been to go bigger”, says the creative director. “You saw that evolution from Uncharted 2 to Uncharted 3, but with this one we felt like if we went any bigger, it would become comical; we could become a parody of ourselves. So it became really about how do we make them unique? How do we make them more playable?”
“What we did with The Last of Us was we constantly went small, quote-unquote, with the set-pieces. The became these very intimate sections. So you had Joel when he’s injured and he’s stumbling; that’s still a set-piece”.

Expect big-spectable set-pieces, but also more intimate ones

According Druckmann, a particular set-piece from The Last of Us ‘Left Behind’ DLC, took as much work as the collapsing building set-piece from Uncharted 2. “I keep telling this story and people don’t believe me, but the photobooth in Left Behind, and the pictures that Ellie and Riley take – that took as much work as the collapsing building in Uncharted 2 as far as man-hours and recourses. It’s this really small moment, if you were to look at it and compare it to a film, but for us it’s like: we have so many recourses, so how do we best allocate them”.
The creative director reassures Uncharted fans that the upcoming Uncharted 4 will have big set-pieces, but will also feature more intimate moments.
“Yes, we’re going to have big-spectacle set-pieces, but the thing that The Last of Us and Left Behind gave us, is the confidence that to create these small intimate moments where there isn’t a threat of death, but it’s another way to get to know the characters through interactivity”. Those are really, for us, just as exciting as what you saw at E3; the big spectacles. I’m excited to see how fans react to that new balance of spectacle versus intimate [moments]”, Druckmann added.
Set three years after the events of Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, Nathan Drake has presumably left the world of fortune hunting behind. However, it doesn’t take long for adventure to come calling when Drake’s brother, Sam, resurfaces seeking his help to save his own life and offering an adventure Drake can’t resist.
On the hunt for Captain Henry Avery’s long-lost treasure, Sam and Drake set off to find Libertalia, the pirate utopia deep in the forests of Madagascar. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End takes players on a journey around the globe, through jungle isles, urban cities and snow-capped peaks on the search for Avery’s fortune.
Uncharted 4 will release for PS4 on March 18th, 2016.

Uncharted 4 MP Beta Begins Tomorrow; File Size And Info Revealed

The Uncharted 4 MP beta will begin tomorrow at 17 (5PM) GMT, as announced a few hours ago by the official PlayStation Europe Twitter account.

    PlayStation Europe @PlayStationEU
HEADS UP: Uncharted 4 multiplayer beta starts tomorrow at 1700 GMT, exclusively for Uncharted Collection owners https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHDKnWosOyY …

    YouTube @YouTube

As a reminder, the Uncharted 4 MP beta will be exclusively available to those who have purchased Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection on PlayStation 4. Naughty Dog revealed a lot more details during yesterday’s livestream (embedded below, just in case you want to watch it); first of all, the Uncharted 4 MP beta will occupy about 7GB of your PlayStation 4’s hard drive.
There will be only one game mode available in this test, Team Deathmatch, but many more will be featured in the full game. As for the maps, the beta will have two while the full game will get eight in total (all of them brand new – there won’t be any reimagining of Uncharted 2/Uncharted 3 maps, at least for launch).
    Advertisements

The time limit of each match is set at 12 minutes or 35 kills for now, with most matches taking between 8 and 10 minutes according to the developer.
It will be possible to purchase gear such as grenades, C4 and the likes during the match; however, the cash price of a certain item will increase the more you purchase it, in order to discourage players from using specific items repeatedly.
There also seems to be a loadout system similar to Call of Duty’s “Pick X”. Players will have 25 points to spend, with each item costing a certain amount of points. One of the big new features of Uncharted 4 multiplayer is the addition of sidekicks, which according to Naughty Dog is only possible thanks to PlayStation 4’s power.
Players can equip up to three sidekicks at a time, though only one can be active. If you want to change it during the match, the previous one will “die”. Also, sidekicks can apparently earn cash on your behalf.
How much are you interested in the multiplayer component of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End? Tell us in the comments.

    Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End PSX 2015 Trailer

Kind of crazy to imagine what Naughty Dog could achieve graphics-wise if they developed on PC.

Uncharted 4 Gets Three New Awesome Cinematic Videos

Naughty Dog and Sony Computer Entertainment released three new cinematic videos for Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, before and during the PlayStation Experience 2015 event.

Arguably the most important one is the cinematic where Nathan Drake receives the visit of his brother (who was presumed dead and never showed up before Uncharted 4), Sam.
Interestingly, Sam wants to catch up with Nathan’s past adventures and at that point, the ability to choose one of three options (El Dorado, Shambhala and Iram of the Pillars, the three lost cities featured in Uncharted 1, 2 and 3) appears. This may suggest that players could enjoy some degree of choice during cutscenes in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, which would be a first for the franchise.

The other two videos introduce a new character featured in Uncharted 4, Nadine Ross. In the first video, she introduces herself in a hostile way to Nathan, with the cutscene ending in a transition to gameplay where the two will likely engage in a fist fight.

    Advertisements

Another Uncharted 4 video was released during a PlayStation Experience panel. In this video, Nathan, Sully and Sam are at a ball; while the Drake brothers slip into a different room downstairs (presumably to retrieve something), Sully receives the visit of Nadine, who seems to be an acquaintance of his.

The video was grabbed from the live stream and its quality is not as good as the previous ones. Even so, it’s impossible not to notice the amazing facial animations realized once again by Naughty Dog.

As a reminder, the Uncharted 4 multiplayer beta is currently ongoing. It’s available for the owners of the Uncharted – Nathan Drake Collection and it will end on December 13.

Sony Wants to know your Uncharted 4 MP Beta Thoughts

If you took part in the Uncharted 4 MP beta, Sony wants to know what you think.
If you were involved, check the email linked to your PlayStation Network account. Kojima’s new bosses may have emailed you with a short survey.
They’re looking to find out whether you’d recommend the game to a friend, how likely you are to purchase the title following the beta, your favorite things and what you’d like to see improved, and how you feel it compares to other multiplayer experiences. On top of that, they’re also interested in knowing how satisfied you are overall.
In short, if you were impressed, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to gush. They’re also after information on your past Uncharted history and how often you tend to play online.
The final adventure is around four months away, so it’s unlikely that any overly negative feedback will be acted upon, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t worth filling in honestly.
Minor improvements could be implemented before the game goes gold, and anything that’s too difficult to put in could end up informing future patches.
Uncharted 4, supposedly the last game in the series and the final one to feature PlayStation icon Nathan Drake, will be available for purchase in March 2016 exclusively on PlayStation 4.

Uncharted 4 Gets Amazing New HQ Visual From New Trailer

Uncharted 4 is only a few months away from being released, and a new amazing promotional visual in high-quality, has surfaced online.

A new Uncharted 4 promotional trailer is being shown during the opening weekend for Star Wars: The Force Awakens in select US theatres, and the visual is a screenshot from that trailer.
The official Playstation Twitter account, tweeted that visual earlier today, but a user on Reddit managed to get his hands on a high quality sample of the shot.
As said, the visual comes from a new Uncharted 4 trailer shown at select US theatres, but will probably surface online soon enough.

In the promotional image, we can see Uncharted’s main hero, Nathan Drake, diving towards some ancient golden coin. The coin probably refers to Captain Henry Avery’s long-lost treasure.

Several years after his last adventure, retired fortune hunter Nathan Drake is forced back into the world of thieves. With the stakes much more personal, Drake embarks on his greatest adventure in a globe-trotting journey in pursuit of a historical conspiracy behind a fabled pirate treasure. Every treasure has its cost and this adventure will test Drake’s physical limits, his resolve, and ultimately what he’s willing to sacrifice to save the ones he loves.
According Naughty Dog, Uncharted 4 will be Nathan Drake’s last adventure, as well as the last in the game’s series developed by Naughty Dog.
Recently we posted that with Uncharted 4, Naughty Dog is trying to find a new balance between spectacle and intimate set-pieces.

“Yes, we’re going to have big-spectacle set-pieces, but the thing that The Last of Us and Left Behind gave us, is the confidence that to create these small intimate moments where there isn’t a threat of death, but it’s another way to get to know the characters through interactivity”, creative director Neil Druckmann told Official Playstation Magazine UK recently.

“Those are really, for us, just as exciting as what you saw at E3; the big spectacles. I’m excited to see how fans react to that new balance of spectacle versus intimate [moments]”, Druckmann added.
Uncharted 4 is scheduled for a release on March 18, exclusively for Sony’s Playstation 4.

Naughty Dog Has Some “Sick” Ideas For Uncharted 4 Multiplayer They Haven’t Shown Yet

If you own Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection (and you should), chances are you participated in the Uncharted 4 multiplayer beta last week.

However, even if you did you shouldn’t assume that there won’t be any surprises in the final game for this mode. In fact, Lead Multiplayer Designer Robert Cogburn teased some interesting stuff for Uncharted 4 multiplayer in an interview published yesterday on Gamespot.
[Laughs] It’s going to be fun to consider which direction we take things. We’ve got some sick ideas.
The team has been working really hard, and we’re excited to release the game. We have some ideas we haven’t shown yet, and we’re excited to get them out there.
The “sick ideas” answer is a reference to the supernatural elements Naughty Dog has introduced in Uncharted 4 multiplayer, in stark contrast to the more grounded The Last of Us.
During multiplayer matches, players will be able to harness the power of certain Mysticals that have been introduced in Uncharted lore through the previous games. Here’s a list of the known Mysticals so far, though with Cogburn’s tease it’s safe to expect more of them:
    Advertisements

Wrath of El Dorado – When thrown, the El Dorado sarcophagus from Uncharted 1 appears to unleash spirits that track down the enemies near where it is placed, and damage them.
Spirit of Djinn – The Djinn magic from Uncharted 3 imbues the player with the ability to teleport short distances, but they won’t be able to take cover.
Cintamani Stone – Activating this mystical from Uncharted 2 revives Downed allies within its area of effect to full health instantly.
Staff of Ayar Manco – This staff, from the Uncharted: The Fourth Labyrinth novel, casts a magical force across an entire map revealing where the opposing team is located. It will also show up on the mini-map and can be destroyed.
Indra’s Eternity – From the Uncharted: Eye of Indra motion comic, this Mystical slows down any enemy that enters its visible area of effect.
If you played the Uncharted 4 multiplayer beta, what did you think of it? Let us know in the comments, and don’t forget that Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is a candidate for Most Anticipated Game of 2016 in our Reader’s Awards.

Uncharted 4 CG Trailer From SW Force Awakens Opening Weekend

The Uncharted 4 CG trailer that was shown during the opening weekend for Star Wars: The Force Awakens in select US theatres, has now been officially released by Sony.

Last week, we already posted a high-quality screenshot taken from the trailer, but now the itself has surfaced. The trailer in question is a promotional CG trailer, and looks pretty amazing.
Check out the trailer below, uploaded by AllGamesBeta on Youtube.

Just like Naughty Dog’s ‘The Last of US’, Uncharted 4 is going to feature more intimate moments. While previous Uncharted titles focused a lot on big-spectacle set-pieces, Uncharted 4 will feature a new balance between big-spectacle and intimate scenes.
“Yes, we’re going to have big-spectacle set-pieces, but the thing that The Last of Us and Left Behind gave us, is the confidence that to create these small intimate moments where there isn’t a threat of death, but it’s another way to get to know the characters through interactivity”. Naughty Dog Announces Another Uncharted 4 Delay, Release Now Pinned For Late April

Naughty Dog just announced another Uncharted 4 delay on the official PlayStation Blog. This is a small one, though, as it moves the release date from March 18, 2016 to April 26(North America)/27(Europe)/29(United Kingdom).
Here’s what Creative Director Neil Druckmann and Game Director Bruce Straley wrote to explain this new Uncharted 4 delay.
Let’s start with the good news: Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is wrapping up production and is shaping up to be the proper send off for Nathan Drake that we’ve promised you. The bad news is that we need a bit more time to finish the game so that it meets our standards and vision. Let’s cut to the chase, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End has a new release date in North America of April 26, 2016.
This is our largest Uncharted game to date, and the team has been working incredibly hard to meet the challenge of closing out the game’s development in a timely manner. However, as we approached our final deadlines and started wrapping up the game’s levels, we realized that several key sequences needed extra resources to bring them to the finish line. After carefully considering all of our options, we decided to extend our schedule, making sure that we get a few more polish passes before submitting our gold master (the final disc for manufacturing).
Pushing the date is not an easy choice, and we wouldn’t do it if we didn’t feel in our hearts it’s the best course of action for the game. To you, our loyal fans, we hope you’ll accept our sincere apology. We know many of you have been waiting patiently for Nathan Drake’s final chapter, and now we humbly ask you to wait a bit longer.
On April 26, 2016 the most ambitious installment in the Uncharted series will be in your hands.
    Advertisements

All in all, this is a minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of things. A little more polish can’t hurt, though at this point the hype for Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is simply tremendous.
On the other hand, the latest Uncharted 4 delay might hurt another PlayStation 4 exclusive, Ratchet & Clank. The game has been pinned for April 12, 2016 for a while and now it will have to contend with Naughty Dog’s blockbuster hit, due only two weeks later.
From this point of view, it would have been certainly better if Uncharted 4 could release in March. Let’s just hope this doesn’t translate in a Ratchet & Clank delay aimed at giving it more space…

Uncharted 4 Steelbook Edition Revealed By Amazon Germany

Uncharted 4 A Thief’s End is one of the biggest PlayStation 4 exclusive titles releasing in the first few months of 2016. Sony and Naughty Dog know this all too well and they are trying to capitalize on this with two different special editions including a variety of extra goodies. These two Uncharted 4 Special Editions aren’t enough, apparently, as a third one has been revealed earlier today by Amazon Germany.

The popular online retailer has revealed the Uncharted 4 Steelbook Edition a few hours ago. This special edition of the Naughty Dog developed game isn’t going to be as rich as the Special and Libertalia editions, as it will only include a copy of the game and a special steelbook that’s different from the one offered with the other Uncharted 4 special editions.

Last week it’s been a bad one for Uncharted fans eagerly anticipating Uncharted 4. On a post on the official PlayStation Blog, Creative Director Neil Druckmann and Game Director Bruce Straley revealed that the team requires a bit more time to finish the game so that it meets their standards and vision and the game will now launch during April and not during March as previously confirmed. While it’s disappointing that we will have to wait one more month to play the game, it’s good to know that the team is doing everything it can to release the best possible game.
Uncharted 4 will release on April 26th in North America, April 27th in Europe and April 29th in the United Kingdom. The game was originally scheduled for a March 18th release.

Naughty Dog Didn’t Want To Become A Caricature Of Themselves With Uncharted 4’s Set Pieces, Game To Feature More Intimate Ones

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is one of the more anticipated games of the year and Naughty Dog has been talking more about the game in the past few weeks to get fans even more excited for the game’s impending release. What we have seen so far suggests that Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End will be bigger and better than its predecessors, but it seems like not everything about the game will be bigger than in previous entries.

In a new interview with the British newspaper The Sun, Naughty Dog’s Creative Director Neil Druckmann has revealed some interesting new details on the Uncharted 4’s set pieces. According to Mr. Druckmann, the team followed the trajectory of setpieces becoming bigger and more badass. With Uncharted 4, however, the team didn’t want to become a caricature of themselves, opting to better tie set pieces with the story, making them come in at the right time. Mr. Druckmann also added that the team learned from The Last of Us that not all set pieces have to be big and explosive and that smaller and more intimate pieces allowed the team to introduce different pacing and make things generally more interesting.
“The first three had this trajectory of going bigger and more badass – we didn’t want to continue that trajectory, we didn’t want to become a caricature of ourselves,” he admits. “So we said, ok, set pieces are important, but how do you better tie set pieces with story so they come in at the right time to mirror some kind of personal conflict in the story?

“But also something we learned from the Last of Us is not all set pieces have to be big and explosive. Some of them can be small and intimate – and that lets us get much more interesting and introduce different pacing than in the previous Uncharted games”
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End will be released exclusively on PlayStation 4 on April 26th in North Americal, April 27th in Europe and April 29th in the United Kingdom.

Naughty Dog Talks About Drake’s Struggle Between Family & Passion

Despite the small delay from March to April, Nathan Drake is still about to come back for his last adventure in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, one of this year’s most anticipated titles (the most anticipated for our staff, actually).
Eurogamer had the chance to speak with Game Director Neil Druckmann and just posted a lengthy interview, which delves into several aspects of the upcoming game. We’ve highlighted one particularly interesting tidbit about Nathan Drake’s ongoing struggle to balance his friends and family with his adventuring passion.
The heart of this is Nathan Drake’s – and maybe an artists’ – struggle: how do you balance your relationship with your family and friends, and your passion, the thing you’re willing to dedicate your life to and make big sacrifices for? If you look at Nathan Drake, he has dealt with obsession his entire life. Whether it’s El Dorado in Uncharted or Shangri-La in Uncharted 2 or Iram of the Pillars in Uncharted 3, those have been major obsessions for him and we’ve seen it hurt his relationship. We’ve seen how between each game his relationship with Elena falls apart.
There’s something that happens there in that gap that was really interesting for us. That’s what we want to get into. Because maybe you can’t have both. Maybe you can’t have your family and that passion and the obsession.

When we start this story, Uncharted 4, with the scene we showed [at PSX] today, you see Nathan Drake is living what’s for him a very mundane life. Maybe he’s not doing what he’s meant to do. And it might not take much for his brother just to lure him back in.
And then every level, every character interaction, it’s like, are we always coming back to that? Everything has to get filtered through – is this building on that theme? Are we presenting different arguments of how you handle this kind of conflict in your life.
This is a very enticing topic to explore, especially since most of us can relate to similar challenges in our everyday’s life. After all, it is quite common for passions and affections to be in conflict with one another.
After playing The Last of Us, I am quite hopeful that they’ll get this right. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End will launch on April 26/27/29 (NA/EU/UK) exclusively for PlayStation 4.

Uncharted 4 Still Has Some Bugs To Fix Before Shipment

The release date for Uncharted 4 is closing in, but Naughty Dog’s latest Uncharted installment still has some bugs that need to be addressed before shipment.

Drake’s last adventure is slated for a PS4 release on April 26 in the US. European players will be able to Play Uncharted 4 a day later, while PS4 owners in the UK will have to wait until April 29. Since its announcement back in 2013, the game has been delayed multiple times. Naughty Dog is using the extra time to further “polish” the title. On the official PS Blog, Naughty Dog explained the decision to delay the game once again.
Fixing loading, animation, system jobs in Uncharted 4 just in time

With 3 months left before release, Naughty Dog is working around the clock to deliver an amazing final chapter to the Uncharted series, and according the game’s lead programmer, Christian Gyrling, there aren’t many weeks left before the title gets shipped. Usually a game is made ready for shipment within 2 to 4 weeks of actual release, so would leave Naughty Dog with a little bit more than 2 months to finish the game.

    Christian Gyrling @cgyrling
Not many weeks left until we ship #Uncharted4 and I just found one of those 'How did this ever work?'-bugs. #justintime

Naughty Dog’s lead programmer adds that he recently found one of those “how did this ever work” bugs, just in time. Apparently this wasn’t the only bug plagued Drake, as Gyrling just Tweeted that he found some more bugs – ranging from job system bugs, to loading and animation bugs.

    Christian Gyrling @cgyrling
It's amazing the kind of bugs you find near ship. Job system bugs, loading bugs and animation bugs. #shippinggames #fixingbugs

We’re pretty sure that Naughty Dog will fix any bugs that they encounter, and that they’ll deliver an outstanding final chapter to Uncharted, and Nathan Drake.

Sony just announced the special 500GB PlayStation 4 bundle for Uncharted 4 that'll be available this April. The limited edition bundle will also include a matching DualShock 4 controller and an actual physical Blu-ray copy of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. The phrase "SIC PARVIS MAGNA", which means "greatness from small beginnings," in Latin. will also be silkscreened on the other side.

As an added bonus, those that buy this bundle will get a voucher for a special outfit, a golden weapon skin and Uncharted Points, the in-game currency, for use in the multiplayer mode. The entire limited edition bundle will cost a cool $399.99, and you can pre-order it later today.

And in case you just want the cool blue motif but didn't order in time, Sony is going to offer the DualShock 4 controller and Gold Wireless Headset as separate items starting in March. The gray blue DS4 will be $64.99 and the headset will be $99.99.
